OP is wrong about the "per-" prefix.

user19161
Pram is short for perambulator.

Ambulate means to move.
Perambulate means to move through.

Sure. Answer it, get some precious rep.

I don't needs more rep.

Fine. I'll answer it if you don't wanna.

9:02 PM
Go ahead.

Yay!

Apoorva's answers have punctuation and capitalisation problems all the time.

I can't think of a good example where you would use one and not the other though. SO they are probably essentially synonyms.

A: Distinction between "ambulate" and "perambulate"?

MahnaxThere is a subtle difference: perambulate means "to walk through" and ambulate means "to walk". They are essentially synonyms, as I can't think of a time when one could not be used, and the other could be used.

Let me know if I should add anything.

I'd just put that the per- prefix in this context is has the meaning of "through," not thoroughness or fullness.

Oops, actually, I think Hellion is right. deletes
Anyways, housework. Bye.

@JasperLoy and occasionally have information problems

Nah, Hellion is wrong. But not wrong enough to get one's knickers in a twist about it.

oh

Q: How to wish someone for the upcoming weekend

SriniIs it correct to say "Wish you a happy weekend" or should I say "Wishing you a happy weekend"?

Is this really worthy of an answer? Are people just that bored?

And now this:

Q: Is it correct to use Past in place of Past Participle?

MeysamOn a movie this boy sees his father with a bruise on his face and asks him: What happened to you? How is this correct? Why didn't he ask his father using past participle form of happen? Like: What's happened to you? The latter seems more correct because we are still seeing the bruise ...

This is probably more popular than the a vs an question.

See, this is why I so seldom get involved with ELU. It continually disappoints me. <big sigh>

Well you've been rather active as of late.
Sorry, you were active as of late.

Wut? @Rob wuz been active?

@RegDwightѬſ道 — You call that active? Do you even remember what me being active looked like?

9:40 PM
Seven. It looked like seven. Or eight, I forget.

@Robusto yes I am

@RegDwightѬſ道 — Eight? Maybe if you pushed that number over on its side.

Q: When Will "Present Perfect vs Past Tense" Cases Be Affected By Culture?

ElfiraRegarding actions taken in the past, besides the differences those two tenses have semantically, my teacher shared that it could be a British vs American English case. When talking about past action, British prefers present perfect because they take into account that the effect from their past ...

That one even has an answer by Kosmo.

9:42 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 — Who is also in the past tense. Perfectly so.

I see a lot of questions lately that get answers (and are not closed) but are dupes.
I rely on the paid staff to do their jobs and close those. :P

Q: Difference between "validation" and "verification"

SvishWhat is the difference between validation and verification? When looking them up on Wiktionary they seem to mean mostly the same thing, but is there a difference? For example, would I be correct in saying that Checking that the format of an email address is valid, would be validation? The proc...

Q: Verification and Validation difference

uzay95I will create a software validation document. As you know there are some documents about to create and accept software. My question is, what is the difference between verification & validation?

Well obviously.

good good

9:51 PM
It has the exact same question, word for word, except that the last and the third to last word are swapped.

I just need to check that I'm not going mad
or at least other people have similar psychological states

@Robusto Seriously, I'm kind of growing tired of questions that boil down to, well, "I have this grammar book for non-native learners of the language and it says X, but this native speaker right here says Y. Why hasn't he read that book and learned the language from his mother instead?"

@MattЭллен I can be pretty sure you're not not not going mad
@MattЭллен Wait, what other people?

@aediaλ here? are there people here?

@MattЭллен Haha wait, the original got closed as gen-ref, and the dupe is at +9 already?

9:54 PM
I don't see any people
taps screen

@RegDwightѬſ道 it's the trick of asking a question people can answer and adding enough words to make it seem worth it
plus it's Friday
the other was asked on Thursday lunchtime - worst possible moment really

'routine maintenance'...but the chat still works

9:57 PM
ah. good to know!

@Mitch The chat is an entirely different server, and IIRC even in an entirely different state.
And in fact there are two separate chat servers. One for SO, and one for all the other sites.

@RegDwightѬſ道 — Separate drinking fountains, too. Separate but equal.
Gotta commute. Laterz.

CU
In fact, CU in OVER 24 hours.
I'll be AFK tomorrow.

@Robusto Bai!
Ooh have fun doing things in the real world, @Reg.

Yeah I will be moving things in the real world.
The contents of an entire flat.
We already have a series of tubes at our new place, but I just won't have the time to log them on or whatever the lingo is.
So, night all!

10:09 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Dump your stuff on the big truck and then get your staff to send you the Internet! I'm sure you'll get it by Tuesday.
Night!

Wishing you a good move @RegDwight

10:39 PM
Mm, the curry cooks, it smells delicious.
