Stars, light your fires, please hear my desires, and I will give them up to you.

@KitΘδς I don't know if this helps, but what we do with the winform's version is create a chartearea and configure the area's axes, and then add that area to the chart its self

@MattEllenД I'll see if explicitly coding the chart area will work. But I think I did that already.

It's a good suggestion. I might have just thought I tried it already.

3:17 PM
Unfortunately no.
This is so stupid.

How come I'm the only person who sees through this peeve:

Q: If I help evacuate a building, what am I doing to the people?

SeamusI remember reading somewhere that to evacuate a person is a medical procedure, and not something to be done during an earthquake. (I thought i was in Fowler, but I just looked and couldn't see it). The point is that it is the building that is being evacuated, not the people. Evacuate means (rough...

What do we do with these questions when someone gives the right answer and the guy says "yeah but I want different word" ?

oh yeah. I saw that. I didn't get why he couldn't just accept that evacuate means two things.
@KitΘδς :(
@KitΘδς in case there is anything of use in our set up code: pastebin.com/R5S70kCc

We can't go reverting all the English words that have deviated from their Latin origins and now mean something completely or slight different.
Might as well just force people to adopt Latin instead.

@z7sgѪ I'm sure Cerberus would approve!

@z7sgѪ we ignore the OP's request, because it's dumb. evacuate is the word that we're looking for, and the top-voted answer illustrates just that.

3:23 PM
Threaten them with a vicious three-headed dog if they fail to comply.
^^^ That applies to everything btw.

@JSBᾶngs He wants a synonym for that meaning of evacuate. What's the problem with that?

@KitΘδς that was not his question. the synonym that mostly matches his request is evacuate, but he's rejected that on frivolous, prescriptivist grounds

> Let's say I'm super-worried about there being some confusion about whether Horatio helped the woman get to the hurricane shelter or whether he helped perform an unlicensed medical procedure on her. Both might be legitimate readings of "He helped her evacuate". I want this to refer to the latter, so how would I unambiguously talk about the former?
@JSBᾶngs I respectfully disagree.

i would refuse to participate in a stupid discussion premised on an ambiguity that would never occur in real life

@JSBᾶngs Now that I agree with.

3:33 PM
@JSBᾶngs He watched CSI:Miami (oh the shame!) and they actually used the word evacuate to describe the action of clearing people out of a building. The dolts! Don't they know evacuate is derived from the Latin ex (out) + vacuus (empty) hence evacuating people really means removing their insides!!! LOLOL

@z7sgѪ Removing their insides is eviscerate, dolt.

@KitΘδς Also that has been edited since I raised the matter of peeving. :)
@KitΘδς A wonderful word that. I learned it from a computer game... You have been eviscerated by a fiend.

@MattEllenД Thanks, man, that was really kind of you. I think this is another one of MS's "let us help you" pieces of crap control.
@z7sgѪ I learned it from Umberto Eco. Brilliant writer, that one.

@z7sgѪ — Pfft. Vicious three-headed dogs are mere pussycats. And Dutch pussycats at that. Think of something scarier.

For some reason all my body is itching Maybe gnats?

3:38 PM
@trg787 Lice more likely than gnats.

@Robusto a honey badger

@Robusto @Cerberus, your honor is being challenged.

@z7sgѪ Hehehe, I know that one. That was Quake!

@MattEllenД — Three frags left!

Ha! Got you, you chart bastard!

3:44 PM
@KitΘδς Woohoo!
what was it?

I created a null series that is not visible in the legend, and added an empty datapoint to it.
It's not pretty, but it works.
I don't understand why I couldn't add empty datapoints to an existing series, though.

gawd blers microsoft
@KitΘδς glad to hear it

@KitΘδς — See? Charts are useful for telling you what you left out.

@Robusto U R so fun E.

KitΘδς: Is it true you pronounce your name kitsch?

3:53 PM
@Robusto No, silly. It's pronounced "tchotchkes."

Oh. I thought it was more like tookus.

@Robusto Would you kiss me then?

@KitΘδς — Is that what you're really after.

@Robusto With you? Absolutely.

Q: Synonym for "Collections"

Peaches491I am looking to name my new Java project, which will be a clone of the Java Collections Framework. I would like the name for my project to have a similar feel to this title, thereby implying it's purpose. A synonym for Collection or Collections would be great. Buzzwords include: Sorting, Sea...

This one too!

Есть!

3:59 PM
@z7sgѪ Gesundheit.

I'd suggest "Graphittier"

Um... thanks?

@z7sgѪ How do you know Russian?

I spent some time in Odessa.

Very strange

4:03 PM
Одесса - самый прекрасный город в мире!

Я знаю Крым лучше моего района, но никогда не был в Одессе

user19161
@KitΘδς No flirting in chat!

@JasperLoy It's only flirting if I'm not serious.

@trg787 Я был в Криму. Тоже прекрасный но не на пляже. Мы ходили в поход по Чёрне реке. Там никого нет.

user19161
@KitΘδς Now you are confusing me again!

4:17 PM
@JasperLoy > flirt: to court triflingly or act amorously without serious intentions; play at love; coquet.

Jul 14 at 16:01, by RegDwight
@Kit No flirting in this chat.
Take notice.

1 min ago, by KitΘδς
@JasperLoy It's only flirting if I'm not serious.

It never starts out as serious ::)

user19161
@KitΘδς I know, that is why I said I'm confused.

user19161
@z7sgѪ Not true, sometimes it really does.

4:20 PM
@JasperLoy Maybe if you're emo or something.

@z7sgѪ pft Fine. You caught me. I was flirting with @Robusto in chat.

What do I win?

user19161
@z7sgѪ Yes I am a very emotional guy.

@z7sgѪ What do you want to win?

Do I get a pat on the head from TPTB?
I'd like to win titty pics.

4:21 PM
@z7sgѪ More like a kick in the pants.

user19161
@z7sgѪ No flirting in chat!

Ow!

@z7sgѪ I've just got the one.

@JasperLoy I was being serious!

At least, I've just got the one pic until I edit some others. Which is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

4:22 PM
@KitΘδς One is better than none in this case. Unless you mean only one breast in that case it's weird and I don't want to see
I don't mind if you pixelat your face

Creamian is a wondeful place. Last time I was there in New Svet. They built 9-floor bulduing for Soviet cosmonauvts

@z7sgѪ Aren't you guys tired of this one yet?

I see how that shirt might have been effective now... :)

Appropriate foundation garments make all the difference.

user19161
@trg787 I suggest you not spend money on bras if you don't have enough for food, and not on cigarettes either.

4:25 PM
@trg787 — They shoulda gone with a "building" instead. Much better accommodations, those.

user19161
@KitΘδς Seen it thrice, but it's cool how you flash it and then remove it. Of course, one can always save it to the hard drive during those few seconds.

user19161
@z7sgѪ Faceless is better than pixellated face.

@JasperLoy The thought had occurred to me, but it's one thing for individual users to have access to it and another to have it sitting in the transcript forever.

user19161
@KitΘδς I think you were the first person to star the bra message, and then the rest followed.

@JasperLoy No, I didn't star the bra message.

user19161
4:30 PM
@KitΘδς But it's pretty harmless, so don't worry about it, not that I like it or not.

@JasperLoy That's pretty evasive.

user19161
@KitΘδς Now I wonder who did...

Q: Can watermelon be a melon

user194076I woke up today at 6am. While brushing my teeth I noticed that my soap 'cucumber and melon' has a watermelon picture on it. I'm not a native English speaker, so this picture was a little confusing to me. Can you please tell me when we can use 'melon' to describe a 'watermelon'.

Can't a melon just be a melon, FFS?

user19161
The title asks if A can be B, and the body asks if B can be A. OP is confused.

user19161
And then after that, sb will come along and say sth equally confusing, and then OP will thank him, and all the rest will look like fools.

4:36 PM
Also, I love that he includes all the quotidian details of his life, such as when he got up, what he was doing when he made THE DISCOVERY that rocked his world.

user19161
I love melons that rock...

Melons rock, in general. Especially honeydew melons.

@Robusto Especially my honeydew melons.

user19161
@KitΘδς I have some too elsewhere.

@KitΘδς — As the saying goes, "A woman is fine, but a melon's divine."

Q: Why do clothing tags say LGG for large?

PhilTags on large size T-shirts will often have the letters LGG to specify large. Why don't they simply say LG? Is LGG simply short for large/grande?

Is this about EL&U?
I can't decide if it's on-topic.
Gen ref, maybe?

It's not.

Which?

user19161
I love melons, but I only eat bananas.

user19161
Bananas are always sweet, while apples, pears and oranges can be sour.

user19161
Durians are sweet too, but many consider them smelly.

user19161
4:47 PM
Finally kiwis and strawberries are usually sour.

4:59 PM
yos.

user19161
@ChaosGamer Saw your question, and smell your kimchi.

Hey @ChaosGamer.

yos.
again. Xd

I hate Motion Charts. They should just go straight to hell.

user19161
@KitΘδς I'm glad you did not capitalise hell. I usually don't and it looks ugly if you do.

5:06 PM
@Chaos here's hoping that your question goes straight to the top of the multicollider
in particular, why haven't the rest of you layabouts and jackanapes upvoted 'er question yet?
3
Q: Origin of "they", "them" and "their"

ChaosGamerI know that they, them and their did not exist in Old English. What language are they derived from?

Just did. Sheesh
@JSB Do you know the Google Charts API?

@KitΘδς ουδεπως (not at all)

What about javascript?

that i do know

I need to put some alternate text in for a motion chart POS.
I call the google function using javascript.
I'm trying to figure out where to put the text.

5:14 PM
mkay

yo

@simchona kiss Hey, baby.

@KitΘδς kiss hey hon

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure my core temperature is rising for the wrong reasons.
My thinking is hazy and my joints are aching.

><

5:15 PM
@KitΘδς i can't actually figure out what your question is. can you clarify?

user19161
Not a real question, -1.

gasp

@JSBᾶngs I'm not sure I know what my question is. Let's say, I want to control the visibility of a label based on whether or not a variable is empty.

@KitΘδς are you using any js framework other than the GCharts API?

@JSBᾶngs Ah. No. Pretty sure no.
I was serious about my core temperature rising.
But I desperately want to finish page testing this week, so I'm trying to function.
So what's the js syntax to test if a variable is null or empty or nothing or what have you?

5:21 PM
if (x) {}. as in python, null, undefined, false, 0 are all logical false

OK, like Python.

if you need to distinguish 0 and false from the others, you could try if (x == null || x == undefined)
if you want to hide a control using JS, you generally find the object and set dispay = "none";

And then if I want to make the label visible? Something like document.getElementById("label name").Visible = true?
Oh. Display.

not Visible. set element.display = "none" to hide, or element.display = "inline" to show
or element.display = "block", depending on what kind of element it is

What is the equivalent of an asp:Label?

5:26 PM
@KitΘδς depends on how you construe that. in HTML labels are not an integral part of the control, they're just text elements added next to it
so if you can find the div or span around the text you want to replace, then you can just set its innerHTML property to something else that you'd like

user19161
@chaos So you did not figure out how to display the strange symbols in your username?

Q: What does "information porn" mean?

Peter Of The CornOn several occasions while browsing Meta Stack Overflow, I have encountered the phrase information porn, typically used by Jeff Atwood.

user19161
This will appear in the multicollider.

@JSBᾶngs Sorry, brain's not working. It took me too long to process what you meant by element.display. I think I've got it now.

@JasperLoy no. can you tell me?
@JSBngs TY. It means great deal to me.

user19161
5:30 PM
@ChaosGamer I can't because I don't know. :)

there's a problem with these special characters names- it becomes harder for someone to write your name in a reply
making sure you leave the first 3 letters untouched helps

user19161
@BogdanLataianu Yes I see you changed yours too in a way. I didn't know you had a great sense of humour too.

user19161
Jeff can't censor the info porn question since his name appears in it.

thanks, my real name has those special hats, thanks to SE that gave my real identity back:P

0
A: What does "information porn" mean?

ClaudiuGenerally, X-porn, for any X, is kind of like... a really blatant hedonistic enjoyment of said X. e.g. watching the food channel is basically food-porn... feasting your eyes on the visual delight and technical specs of the latest computer model is technology-porn, etc. You might not want to googl...

You know... ellipses make your sentences sound... ominous...

5:37 PM
well, it is about porn. very ominous

@JasperLoy I don't see why he couldn't. But I don't think he would.

5
A: What do you call the process immediately after peeing?

DanielWell, I would refer to it as personal hygiene.

CAn anyone tell me how to put those special characters?
plz..

How did this answer even manage to get a single up-vote, not to mention six!?

@ChaosGamer Can you please spell out words?

5:39 PM
@ChaosGamer which ones? copy-paste is a popular solution

user19161
@MrDisappointment I almost mixed you up with another user called Miss, even though you are Mister.

Miss wanted a correction on a sentence last night

user19161
Sometimes upvotes are a sign of humour.

@MrDisappointment Probably because it was the second answer to the question.

@JasperLoy I don't know if I've just been insulted or complimented.

user19161
5:41 PM
@simchona I saw that one, didn't know her intention.

And there were only two for quite some time.

@JasperLoy This doesn't justify it, though.

user19161
@MrDisappointment Neither, just take it literally.

user19161
@MrDisappointment Is this your first day on SE?

@JasperLoy I tried but she was gone

5:42 PM
@JasperLoy Not analyse stuff? Pah!

user19161
@simchona And I thought she returned but it was actually Mister Disappointment, who is supposedly both disappointed and disappointing.

Supposedly?

user19161
@MrDisappointment Simple because you said so yourself. Remember?

hey! in the last few minutes, i passed F'x in total rep. now there are only 5 people ahead of me in all-time ELU rep

I would have thought it had been apparent by now, I guess.

5:45 PM
@JSBᾶngs Congrats!

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Good, but I would rather win the lottery.

Hi!

user19161
@Cerberus Hello!

I have added a little comment to the evacuate question.

@JSBngs Congrats. @F'x Condolences.
@Cerberus Howdy.

5:45 PM
@kiamlaluno, I'm gunning for you

It wasn't a word at all in the age of Cicero or Augustus.

@JSB What's wrong with this? document.getElementById("noDataLabel").style.display = 'inline';

user19161
@JSBᾶngs I have begun to associate kiam with NOAD, since he pastes that in almost all his answers.

@Kit Not enough jQuery.

@JSBᾶngs Did you notice that I3 has overtaken Hellion?

5:47 PM
$("#noDataLabel").css("display", "inline");

@KitΘδς is that to make it visible? it should work

@MrDisappointment Core temperature approaching critical, please shut down to avoid damage to the central processors.

user19161
@Cerberus We should also look at the voters and editors page.

Installing update 9 of 271465709...

@JasperLoy What do you mean?

user19161
5:48 PM
@KitΘδς Huh? I think this is the second time.

I seem prone to initiating a hard reset, updating on shutdown.

@JSBᾶngs Yes, but it doesn't. Even without a condition.

user19161
@Cerberus I mean don't focus too much on rep. It's also impt to vote and edit, hence those pages.

By the way, why do people install Windows updates and have virus scanners on computers that do not contain extremely sensitive information?

@Cerberus baa

5:50 PM
@JasperLoy I'm not focusing on anything myself; but I3 apparently is...

user19161
@Cerberus Because you never know what functionality or security could be compromised if you don't.

@KitΘδς Seriously, I never do either.

@Cerberus Why don't people realise that anti-virus applications are often the source of their many computer woes?

@JSBngs Well, I know how to do it, but as soon as I try to save it the "no characters execpt" sing comes up everytime.

user19161
@Cerberus We should call him thursday now.

5:50 PM
@MrDisappointment Exactly!

user19161
@MrDisappointment True, sometimes one anti-virus kills another, and in the end the virus wins.

@JasperLoy Too much trouble, keeping up with all his name changes.

@ChaosGamer I think someone else had this problem. It's particular characters that it doesn't like.

...dang. I wanted to use symbol for chaos.. back to the search engine I guess...

user19161
Lesson of the day: Do not install two antiviruses at the same time.

5:51 PM
I think it was @Robusto. He wanted to use something different.

@JasperLoy I have never had a virus scanner installed on my own computer. And rarely have I installed Windows updates (they sometimes even screwed up certain programs).
Never had any problems.

@JasperLoy never, ever do that
@Cerberus i also run without a virus scanner. waste of money, memory, and performance. but i always install updates

@JSBᾶngs Why?

@Cerberus Personally, I like to surf porn sites. It's extremely problematic without anti-virus software.

5:52 PM
@KitΘδς so, i'm not entirely sure what the problem is. my knowledge of JS is rusty

user19161
@Cerberus True. There are some laptops that cannot shut down properly after that.

@KitΘδς Really? Why? I use Noscript.

try using a tool like Firebug to see what the calculated styles are

@JasperLoy Exactly.

user19161
@JSBᾶngs But you are JS Bangs.

5:53 PM
@Cerberus Hmm. Maybe I should try that.

@Cerberus updates make me happy. i like to have my bugs fixed.

And the updated features are sometimes useful.
And sometimes they just constantly frig with your color coding until you just give up and start using highlighters on your screen.

user19161
Notice: Microsoft has a free antivirus for a while though many don't know. It's called Microsoft Security Essentials. Just download it.

@KitΘδς The only thing is that it takes a while before you have a long enough white list to never have to bother with giving sites permission. I use a mouse gesture to access the "temporary permission" hotkey, so even that isn't any trouble.
@JSBᾶngs Whatever makes you happy! I'm just saying that I don't and that I haven't noticed any adverse effects.

@Cerberus Mouse gesture. Hehe.
@Cerberus Does it work in Ubuntu?

user19161
5:56 PM
And Windows 8 is supposed to come with a built-in PDF reader.

@KitΘδς Those are the best, especially in programs where you are using your mouse at the moment you want to do something, as in browsers.
@KitΘδς Noscript? I have no idea, but I thought all FF extensions worked on all platforms.
@JasperLoy Haha nice random fact.
Windows is sloww....

I'll check it out. I'm always looking for safer ways to surf.

user19161
I recommend MSE for all Windows users.

Why Windows still doesn't include a PDF reader and Flash is beyond me. Everyone installs it anyway.

@Cerberus one word: antitrust

5:58 PM
@Cerberus I would argue otherwise, the only delays I have (when hardware is sufficient) is with heavy programs (which are the program's fault.)

i heard that they wanted to add the ability to print to PDF to win7, but adobe threatened to sue the bejeezus out of them

@JSBᾶngs Right, is that the reason? But there is no alternative to Flash anyway? And for the PDF reader they could just offer a choice.
@MrDisappointment So what do you mean? You don't have Flash installed?

user19161
@JSBᾶngs But their leaders did have some meeting, and it was speculated that there would be some partnership. Some even said Windows might buy over Adobe.

Just look at the IE browser kerfuffle, resulting in significant fines and obligation to offer suggestions.
