1:39 AM
18:39 Pacific. Perhaps i should flee to keep my street cred

2:02 AM
Or you could stay and build your room cred.

2:38 AM
this is weird. it's using my math.stackexchange ID
has that been conflated with my MO id?

@JBeardz, no idea, what is your username on MO Main?

I think this is the problem:

Q: MO account not showing up on network profile

Evan JenkinsIt seems that my MO account does not appear on my network profile. Other migrated accounts appear to have the same problem, although it seems that new (i.e., post-migration) accounts do correctly appear on the Network Profile. For MO accounts of people who did not previously have SE network accou...

Q: Why are MO accounts not listed among other SE accounts?

Martin SleziakWhen I go look at my accounts in SE network, mathoverflow is not listed there. (You can get to the list of accounts, for example, from your profile page. Other SE accounts are listed on profile page.) I have checked profile pages of a few other users and noticed the same thing - math.SE is list...

3:02 AM
@EvanJenkins, coould be, Francois commented on your new Meta question. JBeardz seems to have wandered off, but his icon on the right is just fading. If you back out of the room explicitly in some way your icon visibly moves off.

3:49 AM
@will
oops
@WillJagy so, my MO username is Jon Beardsley, and my math.SE username is JBeardz
but, i dunno, I guess I'd rather have my more sort of... adult username, haha, but maybe i should just get on math.se and change it. i haven't been on there in a awhile
there changed it. i guess i'll see what happnes.

@JBeardz, take a look at the second Meta question Evan linked just above, "Why are MO accounts..."
Otherwise, if you know something to try, go ahead.

oh thanks!

@JBeardz, the instructions for starting MathJax (Latex) here on Chat are in a link on the right, pinned in place by Mariano. Maybe you've already got that working, cannot tell

oh no, i definitely don't, haha
nice!

$$ \frac{\pi}{ x^{13} + y^2} $$

4:39 AM
$f\circ f\vert_{4}=b_4 (3 x^2 y z + 3 x y^2 z) + b_6 (-3 x y^2 z - 3 x y z^2) +
b_5 (-2 x^2 y z + 2 x y z^2) +
b_1 (2 b_2 x^2 y z + b_2 x y^2 z - b_3 x y^2 z - 2 b_3 x y z^2)$

I think there is some simplification available

haha
yeah, depends on what you're focused on understanding
i should try to get homotopy theorists in this room for a big homotopy theory chat
that'd be awesome
like, a weekly homotopy theory chat
i dunno if people would be up for that

You can pull $xyz$ out of everything. Homotopy, I think it's a good idea. The thing to do is get a good feel for what chat does, perhaps set up a separate room with you as owner.

yeah that'd be a good idea
homotopy theorists are, you know, weird and like to kind of blather on and on, so a chat room would be good

If you look, you'll see the MSE chat is a single infinite thread. I think topical rooms might actually result in some mathematics being done. You may not have seen, if a question on Main leads to two people commenting back and forth, the software will (now) ask them to start a chat room together. If they keep going, it will create the room
Anyway, from watching this for the first two or three days, it is clear that few will try Chat without a good reason and some advertising. So maybe you get to lead this particular topic room.

4:52 AM
You could try to schedule an event here?

@JBeardz, I'm not about to start a room on integral quadratic forms, but I suspect some of the people who cannot be bothered to answer email from me would probably be willing to use a chat room on it, based less on interest in me and more on interest in each other's work...I'm not bitter, no.

Maybe your email got blocked by their spam filter... just a thought.

@skullpatrol, possible in a few cases, but there are too many others where email answers showed up months after I sent something when the other guy wanted something from me. I happen to know that spam filters were a big part with other people, because everything worked after the filter trouble was adequately addressed

yeah, i mean, there are MO users who'd i'd love to just, chat with
or just, listen to as they chat
hahaha

aka "lurking"
:-)

5:04 AM
yeah
exactly
this is cool tho, i'm really glad this exists
it could also encourage interdisciplinary cross-pollination
i don't think i've ever spoken with someone who works on integral quadratic forms before

Right. I think you can arrange pretty much that. You could check the Physics twice weekly chat. Also check some other SE sites that may have successful single sub-topic rooms.
Yeah, quadratic forms. Over rings it is not that popular, but I like it.

i also have a tendency to chat in tiny little pieces, one or two words at a time, frequently hitting enter, but this chat room will not let me do that
if i make a room, will it be permanent??
there i think i made a room
but somehow it's not associated to MO
which would be nice

After 7 days of not being used it will be automatically frozen.

I'm not sure. I think aroom exists as long as people post to it, meaning it does not take that much computer storage. But I think it is possible to hand off room ownership. I would imagine deletion of a room could be requested in emergencies as well. I guess you won't know all the options until you own a room.

yeah, it'll be fun

5:12 AM
Not something i would have thought of, but the existence of a successful topic room might attract people to MO who might otherwise not bother. In particular, the overrepresentation of algebraic geometry and under_rep of plenty of things has never really been solved.
advertising would be word of mouth or word of conference or email...

yeah
i have a big mouth

Excellent. You're elected.

Hahahaha.
I think I'm supposed to be writing a thesis.

Understood. I don't see that you should be working up seminar talks, just herding cats.

hahah
well, yeah, basically it's the type of thing i'll just keep saying when i'm talking to people

5:17 AM
I just do not think someone my age is going to start such a thing; but they will show up if it's there
IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME

yeah. good. well i've already got some people in it
hahah

it's supposed to be he will come

and it's my buddy Greg Stevenson!

@JonBeardsley Rooms need a low minimum of messages to stay (~10-15), or they'll be removed automatically after a week.

oh okay, that's cool

5:20 AM
@Mad, how does he start one?

Chat uses your parent user, which is Math.SE, and that is why the room isn't associated with MO

i see....

@Mad, If I start a room for this, can he take ownership later?

i started a homotopy theory room
btw

@WillJagy There is a "create a new room" button on the chat overview pages, or you can use the "invite to chat room" on a user profile
@WillJagy Yes, a room can have an arbitrary number of owners, and other owners can add and remove new owners

5:22 AM
@JBeardz, do you want me to start an MO homotopy room, pending you merging your identities better?

hahah, sure!
i should figure that out

5:39 AM
@MadScientist, how do I get the new Homotopy chat room to appear on the right side of Meta, same as this one?
Oh, I think I see it here!
@MadScientist, ManishEarth says the new room is on SciComp or the like. Is that true?

@WillJagy It's associated with Math.SE, and it seems like I can only change this for rooms of my own site. I can't change it in this case

@WillJagy Your chat account is linked to SciComp.
It's the same problem that Jon had.
Our MO accounts aren't in the system yet, or some such.

@EvanJenkins MO is selectable now as a chat parent

@Mad thanks. Do I need to do anything else now?

@MadScientist Not for those of us with migrated accounts!

5:47 AM
@WillJagy you can change your parent user on your own user profile now. The parent user does almost nothing, except for when you create rooms or you are a moderator

At least it's still not coming up for me.

@EvanJenkins Yeah, I just tried it with your account and it does not appear

whoa, he was you

@Mad, sorry, looking at my profile, what do I do now?

@WillJagy You can't do anything right now, but it also does not matter much. The parent user is very rarely important

5:52 AM
@Mad, good. Is the room now going to be OK, appear at the right for example, be easy for people to find? Note that I am having a redone root canal tomorrow, so things seem generally broken

@WillJagy No, this requires either a MSE mod or an SE community team member. I pinged Tim Post above, who should be the comm team member in the right timezone for now

@MadScientist, cool. I did suspect it was a bit premature to get one of these right. But the homotopy people seem happy.

And you should decide on one of the two rooms to use, if you haven't done so now. A moderator or room owner can then also move all messages from one to the other room, if you want to do that

@MadScientist I think you pinged Tim with the wrong room. Everybody is over in this one: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/9418/homotopy-theory

Apparently people are complaining because i put the name in all capitals. Everybody's a critic.

6:00 AM
@WillJagy You can change that.

@skull, how?
Oh the capitals. Alright.

@WillJagy yeah we're pretty happy

@WillJagy As room owner, the same way you named it.
@WillJagy Go into the room "info" and under the title there is an "edit" option.
@WillJagy Nice work.
12 mins ago, by Will Jagy
Apparently people are complaining because i put the name in all capitals. Everybody's a critic.
...but nobody want to praise.

Oh I have no problems with MathOverflow all in capitals, it is a huge thing :D

He was talking about the "Homotopy Theory" room.

6:14 AM
@MadScientist I'm a MSE mod, how could I change that room from being associated with MSE to being associated with MO?

Why not be associated with both?

Does anyone know, in excruciating detail, how (I) add Arnav Tripathy to the room with write permission?

@skullpatrol There is also one host site. Also, that's what the creator wanted.

@WillJagy as far as I know only moderators are allowed to invite users with insufficient reputation to chat

@MichaelGreinecker If you edit it, there should be a "host" field you can change

6:19 AM
@MadScientist Got it, thanks!

"The Creator" ;-D

@JonBeardsley Your homotopy-romm is now located at MO.

oh cool!

6:34 AM
Going to sleep.I'm very old

6:45 AM
oh
g'night

2 hours later…
8:39 AM
@skullpatrol Oh, I prevent rooms from getting frozen. Any room I've starred doesn't get frozen because I keep it alive if necessary
@WillJagy /cc @MadScientist this is a known bug,

Q: Math Overflow not available as a chat parent user

ManishearthI was configuring the Teacher's Lounge ping for MO when I realized that currently, the option to change chat parent user to MO is not available. Could this be added? Also, superpings don't seem to work:

They iz working on our porblems

@ManishEarth Thanks for the info.

@WillJagy I can. Why does he need explicit write powers?
@MadScientist in general, it's just better to migrate messages rather than ask for a room merge

2 hours later…
10:39 AM
@ManishEarth Yes you'll also not be able to assign room ownership to certain users, and some other weird quirks.

@TimPost Why not the room ownership thing?
That should work, it has nothing to do with the network accounts API

@ManishEarth Something isn't linked, I tried creating a diamond only room and assigning the mods as owners, no love. BRING ON THAT BLACK MAGIC BACKFILL!
It does when no chat account exists I believe

@TimPost Hmm.
S. Carnahan is the only MO user with MO as a chat parent
(he didn't have an account, so I superping-generate one)

^^ that worked
@TimPost Which profile URL did you use?

10:43 AM
Odd, from the parent site

@TimPost facepalm You know nothing, Tim Post
It's got to be the chat profile :P
While it would be ideal for any profile URL to work, the chat ACL only likes chat IDs and chat profile URLs

No, it works from the parent site profile URL as well (or should)

Nope

Oh. It does
Now I'm Jon Snow :/
But wait. If I can add Anton here, that means I should be able to add him to another room and then make it private

10:48 AM
That's what I was saying, it's a bit wonky at the moment

Worked for me
It still lets me add and remove owners
Could have been a hiccup
@TimPost (I removed myself from the room acl too)

Mind letting me just handle it? :)

Sure :)
Sorry :S

No worries :P Finally got it, and its still breaking randomly on just using the parent profile link

10:56 AM
may be something totally unrelated, I need to remember to test that explicitly after backfill

The migration was still relatively bug free, that way :)
(at least, bugs-which-I-can-see)

I think it went quite well, so far the only bumps have been minor things that have been easily corrected

Yeah
SE 2.0 is ~4 years more evolved than 1.0, right?

Yes, hard to believe it's been that long actually.

Wow. Just, wow. And I have trouble with databases after making improvements to a two-file program.
h/t to whoever ran the migration (@Geoff iirc) :)

11:06 AM
Even more, he did it with his mind

6 hours later…
5:35 PM
For anyone, if you go from Main to Meta, both this room and the merged Homotopy room are visible on the right of the screen. @AnnaLear

@WillJagy Hmm. Should be showing up on main, too.

Q: Chat does not appear in the sidebar

Evan JenkinsThe chat doesn't seem to appear in the sidebar on the main site (although it does on Meta). ManishEarth has suggested that this might be due to the no-ads agreement. I think it would be useful to have it appear in the sidebar, because right now I think its visibility is too low.

@EvanJenkins I'll see about tracking down somebody who can enable it on main.

5:50 PM
@AnnaLear Much appreciated. :)

6:07 PM
Is it possible to show sylow theorems using yonedas lemma ?

@DominicMichaelis, no matter how you go about the Sylow theorems, yo need a lemma
