@Chad: I am more concentrating presenting to my Immediate manager rathar than discussing with Interviewer.
-2
A: How to acknowledge project failures but still emphasize my technical abilities in job interviews?

BVRI have figured out How to handle this. Of course the other answers provided to this question also helped me to come up with this plan. Usually while talking about my failure I highlight: Explain the skillset, expertize and maturity levels required and that I had and describe the gap. How muc...

How ever tha above question context is more focused to Interviewer rather than immediate manager. I would like to post new question with the title "How to present project failures in career without blaming others and without having negative Impact?". What do you suggest

@BVR You can do that if you want... you will get a similar reception you are trying to focus on how you can make excuses... but excuses are like assholes everyone has them they all stink and no one wants to hear them.
What you need to do is ask your manager what he thinks the problem is. Then figure out how you can address those issues in your future work. Do not argue with your manager, he has made his mind up about the problem, the only constructive thing you can do is address his concerns.
And realize his concerns may be that he has the perception these things are going on so you need to figure out how you can show your manager that you are addressing his concerns and getting the job done.

@Chad: Understand one thing. I am not making excuses. Your perceptions and your impressions about my self are damn wrong. "Taking responsibility for the mistakes which I have not done" is not solution. I am taking responsibility for the mistakes that I have done. Not for the mistakes that I don't have done.

BVR
2:12 PM
Putting a resource in a challenging situation beyond his abilities? whose mistake? Mine or managements?
Whose mistake it is deciding architecture and technology and model which doesn't suitable to their business and market challenges? Mine?
I didn't take that decision and I didn't evaluate project and choose the project

@BVR If you are trying to explain why someone else was also resposible... then to me that is the definition of making excuses...
sorry
@BVR I probably would not point that out... It is not my fault that I failed... after all I suck...

BVR
How come?
@Chad: Sorry. I can not take your suggestion. If somebody is responsible for the project failure, that is fact. I can not change it
If you are making that as excuse, people should lie about it

2:27 PM
@BVR You are all focused on who's fault it is... I Am not worried about whos fault it is
I Am worried about your managers perceptions of your performance on the project.

BVR
@Chad: You are focusing. I am not

* If somebody is responsible for the project failure, that is fact. I can not change it*

BVR
My point is honestly assess the situation and give facts. Thats why I have written 6 points in my answer
But you initiated discussion on only this point

If you do that given what I know, I would fire you if I were your manager
Because that is what it seems like you are doing. You want to have a discussion about other peoples failures when I am trying to discuss your failures

BVR
@chad: I am not discussing other people failures. Your perceptions and judgements are WRONG
You have picked that point and initiated discussion. NOT ME

2:31 PM
a project that was not delivered on time is nobody's 'mistake' but it is BOTH peoples failures. It is failure on the company for not picking someone who could do it. It is failure on the side of the other person for not picking up as much of the skillset as possibble, and reporting that it was beyond their capabilities as soon as they realised it

@BVR I am done trying to help you... From now on I will downvote your stupid crap and vote to delete asap..

BVR
@Chad: You are not really helping me.
You are unnecessarily blaming me

I think the issue here might be that of a culture gap between what is understood for talking about others failures and what is not

@BVR Then stop pinging me and ignore me... I would wish you good luck... but I dont think there is enough luck in the world to help you.

3:42 PM
@Chad: Thanks for your help. I don't hold any grudge or negative feelings about you. I really appreciate your helping nature. If you observe I never initiate discussion. You have initiated discussion.
I would like to leave feedback for you

@BVR I was trying to help you because you are headed for a trainwreck.
When, as a manager, I have a conversation with YOU and YOUR future I do not want to have a discussion about Raj's performance, or problems he had. When I discuss with Raj his problems I do not want to discuss the problems you had, or your performance.

BVR
Your solutions and your comments and your perceptions are one sided and favorable to management. Hence you are pointing fingers other side and leading discussion unhealthy. You never give benefit of doubt and tried to think other side of the coin. In my experience people who are solving people issue or team issue should be neutral. Thats what I feel.

When you fail because the challenge was to great for you yes I fail as a manager, but You failed to meet the challenge I set for you.
Because you are wasting time. and time is not something I like to have wasted...

BVR
@Chad: I am not discussing Raj problems. I am saying the failure in project impacts all the team and I am also not excluded
I am not seeing any harm to say that
And also I respected your suggestions and removed from my answer
*removed that point

I do not want to discuss with you what problems raj had. I Want to know why you were not able to overcome all the problems in front of you. And what you would do in the future to avoid them
I will have that discussion with Raj as well if there is a need.
And if he tries to tell me how you also impacted the project I am likely to fire him too.
I need to know that in the future you will be able to meet the challenges I set for you. If I can not then I need to put you somewhere you arent going to create problems.
@BVR If all you can do is talk about how everyone had a hand in the failure then the only way you are not going to create problems for me is if you no longer work for me.

BVR
3:52 PM
@Chad: Your taking negative direction. Those are not exactly I am saying
I am saying There are some problems and challenges in the project. I can not able to overcome those challenges and others also overcome those challenges.
The reason I am bringing is, If I am alone not overcome those challenges, then it means those are only challenges for me and not for other team members or an average professional with same experience levels and similar skillsets

@BVR I am taking a negative direction because that is where I think you are headed. Based on this and other questions you have had I do not think you realize how precarious of a position you are in
and the reason for that is because you refuse to focus on what YOU CAN DO instead you want to focus on what the team DID

BVR
If those are challenges for multiple people, those are really hardcore challenges for average employee and hence my skillset and my exposures are not below standards or below average

And that is why I said you need to talk to your manager and get his opinion of what happened and where he thinks YOU failed.
so that you can focus on that
Figure out how to avoid those failures in the future

BVR
@Chad: I have already talked about my current manager and I am getting their full support. And I have proved myself in my current project.

And find out what he thinks you did right
So you do not throw out the good with the bad

BVR
3:59 PM
What ever I have done, I am contributing here as answer to help the community

Then you have no question to ask... why are you wasting my time

BVR
I am not wasting your time. You only initiate discussion. And I am trying to understand reason and correct my self
if something wrong
You have taken my answer as negative and initiate all this discussion. I would like to be courteous to you and answering your questions and trying to understand your point. But you are not trying to understand the whole point and taking negatively.

@BVR did you communicate to your boss/manager this was the case?
@BVR did you discuss this with your boss and the project leads?
There may be a large cultural difference here, too. In the USA talking about how you were put into the situation where your project will fail and it "wasn't my fault" will come across as blaming others

4:15 PM
In the UK I find that if the project fails the team fails as one so I see what @enderland means...

BVR
4:36 PM
@enderland: That project is over and I have placed into other project. When context comes and when he asks about my tenure in the other project I have presented the same way that I have explained in my answer
I have removed one point by respecting Chad's suggestion

5:19 PM
@BVR any american who hears that answer will think, "wow, BVR is trying to avoid any responsibility for this project not working"
