@Duga scary
@The29thSaltshaker right.... I found the error in my calculations ...
from random import random

def monte_carlo():
    num_trials = 1000000
    numerator = 0
    for trial in xrange(num_trials):
        x = random()
        numerator += max(x,1-x)
    return numerator / float(num_trials)

print monte_carlo() #0.750065842786
the integral is over 2x, and not over x
always fun to set up a simulation to know for sure
but anyhow that's an example of calculus + discrete math / probability

@EBrown moving the visit SE button on SESE to right side can be better IMO. I keep clicking that instead of visit data.
also I was promised raw data :(
nvm
@arda There is also an SQL database if you wanted more normal table data, for example if you wanted deltas in their own columns, instead of on the next row
It took some messing but I cleared the data and currently working on it
OK cool
I'm sure a little VBA magic could do it pretty easily too
@Phrancis too lazy to code. 3am code would be terrible anyways
lol true
00:14
clearing the percentages was fun
@EBrown maybe a suggestion to make a switch to optionally put the deltas into their own columns instead of in brackets in the same column as the number in question?
That'd make it easier to copy the raw data into a spreadsheet and use it
@Mat'sMug I'm almost completely sure that most people didn't get that reference or considered it a dad joke... I liked it :)
@Duga so in 4 months, the unanswered rate rised by %0.81, we will not be under %92 by 2016 ending at this rate, but very soon after it
the unanswered rate slowed down since start of summer, but that might mean that we are getting less questions - gotta check
nope, questions per day rised steadily.
00:31
@arda as did Answers per day
@Vogel612 yep
(sidenote: it's "rose" not "rised". irregular verbs are jerks)
@Vogel612 will keep that in mind
irregulars in english are more normal
german... hell
Have risen is also acceptable.
I don't even know about German irregular verbs :/
00:33
@Vogel612 Yeah, there are only a dozen or so, though, so...
@Hosch250 I did have to learn two pages full of them
And interestingly enough, most of our words started irregular, but usage changed them to be regular.
soo.. probably a few dozen, yea
You probably know more than I do then--at least offhand.
@Vogel612 they are used more commonly on masculine/feminine versions of words and for example with third person etc
00:55

Had a pretty funky tune
@arda I'm getting a better method of getting raw data around.
@EBrown thanks
@arda For now you can play with one API method, check the JavaScript for it.
It's used for charts.
@EBrown haha no way

it is even 4am now
@arda Yeah I started work on the API for charts.

In my code, I have a class A. Class B is instantiated by the client to be passed directly in to class A through the constructor. Should class B be an inner class of class A?
if class B is never used outside of class A, I just declare it inner
but I am a noob so don't listen to me
Well, class B is used outside class A; it's used in the main/client code.
then do you mean a member object?
e.g. ObjectB objectB = new ObjectB(); passed as an argument into constructor for ObjectA?

ObjectB objectB = new ObjectB(...);
ObjectA objectA = new ObjectA(objectB);
That's ^^ what I mean.
@SirPython I'd advise against it, especially if B can be independent of A
Okay, thanks.
I'd just make B a member object or whatever and call it good, no need to make an inner class then

You're right, I compeltely misread that KB article. However I'd warmly recommend getting away from global objects and start passing parameters - a database connection should be as short-lived as possible, and it seems to me that by nesting transactions you're making your life much more complicated than it needs to be. — Mat's Mug 2 mins ago

@Malachi Should be left-to-right.
1) Check what's crashing. Are you using too many resources, or is the usage ok but the macro takes so long that Excel goes unresponsive, then you crash Excel by trying to get it to respond? If it's just a very long macro and you want to be able to check its status, consider adding in a DoEvents every once in a while. 2) Speed up the code. There are lots of references to Cells here, which will be slower than storing and accessing an array. Check out our sister site Code Review for more help on optimizing. — Mikegrann 9 secs ago

here is the link where I came up with the question from --> csharpstar.com/csharp-coding-interview-questions-part-3
they have interview questions galore on that site
I need to get back to work now....lol
@Malachi That first "interview question" is really obscure
I can't think of one time where I've actually ever used a char in C#, let alone had to worry about it being coerced to an integer

some functions turn strings into arrays of characters, so you have to be aware of what weird output means
huh, Rubberduck has been earning GitHub stars in bundles of 2-3 lately.. but we haven't released anything since @Hosch250 finished his internship, I haven't published anything on RD News, I haven't tweeted anything in ages, and the SO ad has been down since the second half of 2016 started. has anyone noticed any blog post or something talking about RD anywhere? a quick google search turns up nothing I haven't seen before..
I shouldn't throw words around like that. some operations/functions/methods/etc in C# take strings in as an array of characters. a string is really just an array of characters so for some sorting algorithms and stuff like that you might want to know about properties of characters in C#
fwiw it's a little more than "just" an array of characters ;-)
it's an M&S array of characters

@DanPantry Probably incredibly UK-Specific cultural reference there, but I like it ^^
15:13
^ weirdo
he must take the spam to mordor
and put it into mt doom
just... all of the spam.
@DanPantry Need helps
Never mind I'll just google
@EBrown that's almost as bad as need more codes
@DanPantry Well I need to know how to fire method when checkbox changes.
el.addEventListener('change', function (event) {})
15:16
Eww no
I like doing it through attributes.
don't you dare use onchange
I did, but it failed.
@EBrown and then that will have some problems and you'll post the question on code review and Dan will ask you to use addEventListener. Why don't you use aEL now
If you are looking for attributes, I can tell you I don't have attributes, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let the onchange attribute go now that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.
It doesn't even work on this input element for some reason.
15:19
Nevermind
It was my stars :P
linked to mine
Indeed
I link to the account specific part
But I did not find the project on Github\explore
15:22
neat
@EBrown Nice! Just add a label like "Show/Hide Delta" and we're set!
@Phrancis Yeah that didn't work well, so I gave up on it. Lol
I cannot make a label for that switch work to save my life.
lol
Well, I suppose all you have to do is click it to find out what it does
Yeah.
I'll get one on there eventually.
or a tooltip?
@Mat'sMug That can probably be done, let me check.
after discussions and googling on SO today
Android seems like a truly awful framework to work with
@Mat'sMug @Phrancis Tooltip added
15:29
Oh that's perfect

Q: Filling Array with Alphanumeric values

Jose Hermosilla RodrigoI've done a function that does the following : It takes an argument length that it will be the length of the result array. The Array should start with alphabet values first : ['A', 'B', 'C', ...] If the length of the Array is greater than 26 (The number of letters) it should look like : ['A', ...

Q: null check and parameter checking

Robert Peter MansionI'm checking each variable to prevent null exception, but still wondering can this be improve in much simpler and cleaner if you will be writing the same code? Please see the below snippet: [AjaxOnly] public ActionResult GetInstitutions(string parent) { if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(parent)) ...

@EBrown somehow it doesn't work on a mobile in desktop view. .....and mobile view needs a bit of CSS love too =)
@Mat'sMug Can you SS your mobile view for me? I think I still have to remove the view switcher crap.
15:48
Huh, I switched to desktop view and now there's no way to get back to mobile view
@Mat'sMug Intended.
desktop masterrace
2
There should still be a [mobile] link somewhere at the bottom.. like SE sites do :)
@Mat'sMug I don't have time for that.
That's a whole separate Master page, and a whole separate CSS/JS setup.
I could probably port most of it over, but that's way more work than I have time for right now.
...then why bother with a mobile view at all?
15:50
@Mat'sMug Default with ASP.NET.
Just have to remove it, forgot to do it earlier.
makes sense
better suggestion: use CSS and don't have separate views
Use Bootstrap with a mobile-first design.
@DanPantry That's what I'm doing, but ASP.NET doesn't do that by default.
Problem solved.
15:51
@Mast No.
@EBrown Oh, right
silly aspnet
2
worse suggestion: scratch that and rewrite it all in PHP
@Mat'sMug >.>
PHPoop that is sentient
no i don't know what i'm on about go away

15:53
Now your site works, we could making a new front-end a .
See what kind of weird apps people come up with.
A universal windows app could be interesting
....if I had a winphone
@Mast I need the API to be finished first.
@Mat'sMug I have one, and a book on how to write UWA's. ;)
