Hmm, or an excuse to do some web-handling in VBA, with all of Excel's charting power

@Mat'sMug Parts of the API work right now.
Yeah. Finish the API first =)
@Mat'sMug Well you can get one property for each site history.
It's used for charts.
And that big table?
@Mat'sMug That's not in the API yet.
But you can literally get every single value in that field from the API.
You just need n calls for however many of those columns you want.
Which I'm documenting now.

In which I help the asker shoot off their own foot
I'm wondering if I should add more foot-shooting suggestions
a la "you could maybe use reflection for this"
> The type of the value to be retrieved cannot be determined as long as you store it all in a Map<String, Object>
Why not?
I put an Integer in at runtime.
How do you know there's an Integer coming out?
By checking the type of whatever comes out.
Yes, but that's runtime
Asker wants compile time typesafety.
21:04
In that case you should specify something more useful than Object.
but the map can take string and integers.
and floats.
Or use a validator in the setter which only allows certain types to be inserted in the Map.
and if the key starts with "str" then the value has to be a string
and if the key starts with "float" then the value has to be a float
.... compile time.
I get the feeling there's a halting problem in here somewhere
Oh, there's definitely some problem going on.
probably in "you must execute the code to know what the key could be, and executing arbitrary code brings on the halting problem, thus, you are utterly screwed."
My solution is to remove the arbitrary keys and make you pass in what is essentially a class

No, I'm talking C#.
I fail to see the need for dynamics here. He wants type safety, right?
But, you basically defined a named dictionary.
So make a container which only takes one type.
You'll always know it's type.
@Mast shrug dynamics provide typesafety.
Unless you're writing Ruby...
21:34
@Mast Exactly, a dictionary. It will only take a key/value of the specified types.
imho I think they should just use a class
- bounded list of fields
- writing and reading needs to be type safe

Yep class/struct is the way to go

And if you make it a dynamic class, you can handle all three types safely without getting wet.

Q: What's the most effective way to perform code reviews?

PaddyslackerI've never found the ideal way to perform code reviews and yet often my customers require them. Each customer seems to do them in a different way and I've never felt satisfied in any of them. What has been the most effective way for you to perform code reviews? For example: Is one person reg...

but it's too broad

code-reviews tag on Programmers has a good variety of topics
I hate windows 10
search -> run -> notepa (hey, notepad) -> enter -> you have to wait 4 seconds -> it starts notepad
also "calc" is not a thing but "calc.exe" is
like why
Windows+R, notepad.exe -> notepad starts
why search when you know what you're looking for?
also, kill Cortana
@Pimgd Is it?
@Pimgd If I type calc in CMD, it will execute the calculator just fine. No .exe required.
wooo windows+R will do it just fine
If I wrote an application that reads data from a very specific kind of PDF, I would need to provide example PDFs for a code review, right?
21:51
@MeikVtune ..... depends?
@Mat'sMug I use it on my phone to set reminders or to start my GPS, but it's very, very picky.
Is it important, the PDF?
@MeikVtune It would be helpful.
are you reading from it through a library or are you handling all the reading yourself
Reading data from the PDF is, like, the only purpose besides uploading said data to a website
21:52
Feel free to make an example PDF which doesn't contain more than it needs to with data that's made up.
@Pimgd Start -> Note -> Enter -> Success!
The example input doesn't have to be real, as long as the code is real.
I am using iText to read the PDF
Typing on the start screen is still a thing.
@Hosch250 and now for calculator.
21:53
@Pimgd cal + Enter is enough on my machine.
@MeikVtune Nope. If it read a PDF, it just has to meet the standard for PDF's.
I hate dutch windows =/
why is it even Dutch
@Pimgd There's your problem. Set it to English.
Try Reken.
IMO just an anonymized shot of the PDF would be like icing on the cake - a bit like a screenshot of the Excel worksheet helps understanding what some VBA code is doing, but it's not mandatory or even needed, just "nice to have". not to mention, pretty posts usually get pretty vote counts =)
If you can't add a PDF, at least tell us the exact format of the PDFs. @MeikVtune
21:56
isn't the format "PDF"?
...
> You know nothing, Jon Snow Mug
Context, Mug.
If I put my code up, I will provide a PDF example.
if anything isn't clear, people generally comment and ask for clarifications anyway :)

What @squint is saying is this question is perfect codereview but inappropriate for SO. You also might want to retitle to something like: "How do I refactor this to..." — zhon 49 secs ago

A: Checklist for how to write a good Code Review question

Simon ForsbergSimon's Guide for posting a good question There are a lot of questions that appear on Code Review, and all questions are fighting for reviewer attention. This is a non-exhaustive list of items that I am looking for in a Code Review question when determining whether or not I should review it and ...
