@Mast Washington state != Washington, DC
@rolfl Shiny.
@Phrancis USA logic.
DC (District of Columbia) is a pseudo-state that's smushed in between several of the Eastern states
Hey guys, if we're gonna discuss geographic logistics, can we go to nth pls?
03:03
@Quill No site business going on.
Also, we're probably about finished.
That and that
@Phrancis What, that's crossing the entire USA.
No logic whatsoever.
Gimme teh codez!
I'll review them.
It's actually accurate
Washington was the hero and founder of our country, so it isn't surprising.
More of a #NamingThings problem
03:06
I live in a Washington county, too.
Lots of Washingtons and Lincolns. The next most common are local heroes (such as Austin in Texas) and Native American names (such as Arkansas and Minnesota).
@Quill Only 2 movies on an iPhone? Must be an old iPhone indeed.
@Hosch250 s/Austen/Austin ?
Yeah. I have trouble with that name.
Dishes time.
Hey @Mat'sMug how does this work?
> Contributors please edit link(s) to your answers into the question and improve/add to as needed :)
It says you added it Mug but it could have been robo-added
@Quill Cuba != Australia
#NamingThings
@Quill So I can say my village is bigger than Australia?
I'm so going to abuse this.
03:13
> The village, founded in 1862, is in a sugar growing area and "dominated by the old, out-of-service sugar factory's chimney, with "Australia" written prominently down its length.
> The village is named after the factory, the Central Australia,[5] which like others in the area were named after continents.
Basically, they needed a name and went lousy.
Naming things is difficult ;)
@Quill That's a sign to steal.
Nederland is a hamlet in the municipality Steenwijkerland in the province Overijssel, Netherlands. It has a population of about 25. 'Nederland' is the Dutch name for the Netherlands. Because of the comical value of the toponym, roadsigns with the name 'Nederland' are stolen frequently. The Dutch beer company Bavaria has used Nederland in a commercial. In the commercial two men are giving away beer in the hamlet. It ends with (in translation): Bavaria, popular throughout Nederland. The hamlet was pictured on a Dutch postage stamp. == References == De Grote Bosatlas 51e editie - Wolters Noordhoff...
03:15
> Because of the comical value of the toponym, roadsigns with the name 'Nederland' are stolen frequently.
there's a town called Bogan Gate in Australia
@Phrancis where's that?
@Quill It's worse than that. There was a time where they wouldn't produce the name board because it would get stolen anyway.
03:17
Nederland is a city in Jefferson County, Texas, United States. The population was 17,547 at the 2010 census. The city was settled in 1897 along what is now Boston Avenue and incorporated in 1940. It was settled by Dutch immigrants on land sold by the Kansas City Southern railroad. It is part of the Beaumont−Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nederland is also a part of an area known as "the Golden Triangle," which comprises Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. The city is adjacent to the Jack Brooks Regional Airport in Port Arthur, which serves the nearby cities of Beaumont and Port Arthur...
The Town of Nederland is a Statutory Town located near Barker Meadow Reservoir in the mountains of southwest Boulder County, Colorado, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,445. == History == Gold was discovered in 1859, along Boulder Creek at the confluence of South Boulder and Beaver Creeks, called Deadwood Diggings, and six miles northeast, called Gold Run. Nederland was established in 1874. The town started as a trading post between Ute Indians and European settlers during the 1850s. The town's first economic boom came when minerals such as tungsten, silver, and gold...

Dutch really don't have a good image of Belgium

I've only been to Texel and Eindhoven
Texel when I was really young, Eindhoven when I passed through The Netherlands on a 5-country biking trip

@JeroenVannevel Charleroi, isn't that French for the Rotterdamse Sjaarloos?
@JeroenVannevel @skiwi is in Eindhoven
It's a nice city.
Bogan Gate /ˈboʊɡən ˈɡeɪt/ is a small village in Parkes Shire of the Central West of New South Wales, Australia. At the 2011 census, Bogan Gate and the surrounding area had a population of 307. Bogan Gate is derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning "the birthplace of a notable headman of the local tribe". The village lies in wheat and sheep growing country and is on the Sydney - Broken Hill rail line, and it is the junction for the Trundle Tottenham Branch line. Attractions include the annual Bogan Gate Arts Festival, golf tournaments at the local nine-hole Bogan Gate Golf Club. == History... ==

yeah Eindhoven wasn't too bad
I preferred the parts of the trip through Germany though
Eindhoven is admittedly one of the best places to be.
I'm not sure where exactly in germany we passed but there was this one place '<something> am Rhein' where we stayed at some place on a hill overlooking a curl in the Rhein with some fields below us and a hill at the other side where we watched some guy do tricks with his Falcon
That's one of the few memories I have
oh, and the teachers looking at me worriedly expecting I would drop dead from my bike
I was not prepared for those distances
@JeroenVannevel Weil am Rhein?
04:29
I'm not sure but it doesn't ring a bell
Distance is irrelevant while on a bike.
So many am Rheins
@Mast not when you're 14 and doing 110km/day

When your mom has an apple and a banana and asks you what you want to do with them, you tell her you want to eat. She doesn't know which one you want to eat so she peels the banana and cuts the apple in slices while you're deciding
That way you can see the results while you're deciding
and you don't have to cut the apple without seeing the peeled banana because that would take time
You must have had a different mom than I had.
I think that is a safe assumption

Zak
Zak
@Pimgd Mostly me. A lot of it is me being more verbose than necessary so I can understand it more easily if (when) I return to it later.
11:19
yeah but ...
value = dataArray(ix, sourceColNum)
newArr(iy, currentRow) = value
value is not helping
Zak
Zak
Maybe, but I find lines that do too many things a lot harder to read.
There, it's probably overkill.
But those statements don't have to be *much* longer before that line gets very complicated
newArr(iy, currentRow) = dataArray(ix, IndexIn1DArray(dataHeaderRow, header))
For instance
yes I don't like that one
Zak
Zak
All in all, I'd much rather maintain code that's a bit *too* verbose than the alternative.
it's better for readability sake if you're explicitly defining what you're assigning around
but value is pretty unclear why, what or how this is important
for example:
I wish I had a nice solid point to throw at your code
but right now all I got is 'sharpen your pencil, you made fuzzy lines here, here, here, and there'
11:27
public List<int[]> getThem(){
    List<int[]> list1 = new ArrayList<int[]>();
    for (int[] x : theList)
        if (x[0] == 4)
            list1.add(x);
    return list1;
}
which is nice advice but a tad useless for the next time
also I'm getting the striking feeling that a lint tool could sniff out some of these
versus:
does VBA have lint
eh, it has rubberduck
You should run rubberduck over your code, he might tell you things to fix
public List<int[]> getFlaggedCells(){
    List<int[]> flaggedCells = new ArrayList<int[]>();
    for (int[] cell : gameBoard)
        if (cell.isFlagged())
            flaggedCells.add(cell);
    return flaggedCells;
}
and yeah
use linting tools
Zak
Zak
lint?
11:30
static code analysis
it complains if you do things like x = 3; x = 4
says "you've got an unused local store, x = 3 is always overwritten"
stuff like that
or double null checks, or iterating over an array which is always empty, or crud like that
Here there's a Code Inspection section
Zak
Zak
I don't know if it picks up superfluous intermediary variables, but it picks up "variable never assigned" etc.
I would link to it directly but them peoples who made it (hint hint guys) didn't make anchor links
for C# we have resharper do that stuff
Zak
Zak
@Pimgd I already have RubberDuck ^^
@Zak I'm just saying that "in general" it does stuff like that.
@Zak so run it =D

Honestly I don't know, I just know the dreamweaver I had would crash randomly at times so I'd lose my work and it was ass
I could try if Frontpage will take it ^^
@Mast VS works fine for me, but you can get specific IDEs/Editors that specify for the prototypes and structure of those languages and libraries
At the moment I write in CodePen, but that doesn't port too well to real files.

Also CodePen's indentation is screwy
Yup.
And the syntax highlighting looks pretty.. crap
The syntax highlighting is very basic, but not too bad.
It's more of an experimental playground than a IDE.
ehh, you can always get worse
my brother is getting JAVA at school
I have no idea what the IDE name was
but they went for that one because "installing java was too hard"
ffs it comes bundled with netbeans and eclipse and such
What's JAVA?

darn it I am too slow
like that crud IDE he uses
I have Memer, it's amazing
@Quill (That was the joke)
no code completion, has to indent by hand if he copies something...
@DanPantry nice
11:42
So I say "eh, you should change this to that"
and his reaction is "no man are you crazy I'd have to reindent all my code"
which is a sad thing, man
woo, my crud still runs after merging a week's worth of commits from other people
time to commit and then run away for lunch
I just spent half an hour altering <select> and <input> text to be perfectly aligned when stacked on top of each other
Turns out that <select> elements have some inherent width that is different based on vendor so it's more or less impossible (or at least, really really annoying).
*shadow dom
Okay, fine, shadow DOM
I agree and spread the word more around the regulars so if there could be always an "active" guy there. Maybe a global ping for all users in chat could be implemented. — chillworld 1 min ago
However this is its own problem as you can't do that in IE which we have to support
11:53
don't know if the ping is possible
Through a browser extension, definitely
because I don't always look at chat, but if I'm being pinged I know to look at it
Don't forget to unveil yourself if you participated in the secret santa!

Pffft, IE.
@DanPantry Did you yet?
@Mast yes, I'm the latest answerer
11:59
he did
Ah, right, F5 fixed it.
