Q: Refactoring if statement based on a hash key

just soI have to call Article.to_draft/to_archive/publish method depending on the presence of the corresponding key in the params hash. I do, however, have no idea to implement it properly. def update_state method = if params[:draft].present? :to_draft elsif params[:archived]...

If your code functions 100% correctly (and your question meets all the requirements at codereview.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic ), I would consider posting this question to the CodeReview stackexchange instead. This kind of question seems like it would be more suited there. — Kevin W. 44 secs ago

A: Let's pick t-shirt tagline!

Mat's MugMake it work, we'll make it shine Hints at rule #1 code must already be working, and pretty much sums up what we're all about.

How's thay?

I think I would prefer something that was tongue-in-cheek

I will instead try out GTK+, maybe it's easier, I only have to do a lot of crap in MSYS2. Also I don't know how to set it up in Code::Blocks...

@DanPantry Learnt "Pokémon Exception Handling" thanks to you. :D

@MathiasEttinger That's a thing?

Just got an email with the subject: "Code Review Top User swag!"

@Mast Gotta catch em all

catch(Exception) { }

3:05 PM
In C#, can't you just catch {}?
> Your response has been recorded. You can expect your swag to arrive in the next 42 to 56 days!

Yeah they finally dropped the 6-8 weeks thing. Oh, wait...

@DanPantry Catching them is irrelevant if you don't handle them well, right?

That's the problem with having a life, it leaves one too busy to qualify for top user swag.
3

@Mast Do you mean Pokémon or exceptions?

Except you won't bother the end user with errors it can't do anything with either.

3:08 PM
@Mast The joke is that in Pokémon the protagonists' saying is "Gotta catch em all"

Zak
@Donald.McLean Don't you get Moderator swag anyway, or is that different?

@SuperBiasedMan Exceptions ^^

@Donald.McLean How is that new house going, by the way?

@DanPantry I figured where the joke came from.

TIL @Donald.McLean is a mod. I have never seen the blue name for some reason.

@Zak I have my moderator hat. That's the only swag I've gotten so far.

@Gustavo6046 2nd monitor isn't a helpdesk. Google it :-)

Google isn't a helpdesk either ^^

@Donald.McLean What's the mod hat?

Google is irrelevant.

3:10 PM
@Mast Google can help you find helpdesks. Ironically, it'll probably lead you to SO

@EBrown We have a pre-construction meeting scheduled for Jan 18th.

@DanPantry Yup.

@DanPantry It's a baseball style cap with an SE moderator logo on it.

@DanPantry Don't stop beating it, just to be sure.

3:11 PM
@Donald.McLean Is it one of those hats that dads would wear?
And only dads

My wife doesn't seem to mind it.

Ah. Okay, it doesn't look so bad.

My wife cringes whenever I wear it

I have several hats that my wife is good with. On the other hand, the hat from our daughter's high school I have never actually worn.
Though it isn't really hat season at the moment. Too cold.

3:16 PM
@Donald.McLean That's good. I forgot that you are having it built.

@Donald.McLean You got sketches?

@JNat I almost deleted your email as spam.

@EBrown It would have been your loss :P

I know, but it almost didn't catch my eye. Lol

3:18 PM
@EBrown What subject line should we look for? Just for those of us who have aggressive spam filters and may miss it?

@Donald.McLean Wow, t hose houses are gorgeous.

> Code Review Top User swag!

You'd never see those in the UK because we're all packed together like sardines in a can.

@Phrancis look for "top user swag"

From an email with a name I have no idea how to pronounce.
(No offense meant @JNat, I just have no idea how to pronounce your name from that email. Lol)

3:19 PM
@Donald.McLean Shiny indeed.

No one can pronounce my name anyway :P

And those houses are super cheap too.. $243k is £161k, which is basically just over the price of owning a modern 2-bed flat here I live.

No offence taken

Heh, well I can understand why. One of those symbols is one I've never seen before.
(At least on that letter.)

What, a tilde?
~

3:20 PM
Yeah, I've never seen it on a vowel.

What are tildes actually used for?

Only on an "n" and that was in Spanish class.

I've seen two tildes which make the congruent sign

Tilde mean "approximately"

The tilde (/ˈtɪldə/; ˜ or ~) is a grapheme with several uses. The name of the character came into English from Spanish, which in turn came from the Latin titulus, meaning "title" or "superscription". The reason for the name was that it was originally written over a letter as a scribal abbreviation, as a "mark of suspension", shown as a straight line when used with capitals. Thus the commonly used words Anno Domini were frequently abbreviated to Ao Dñi, an elevated terminal with a suspension mark placed above the "n". Such a mark could denote the omission of one letter or several letters. This saved...

3:21 PM
@JNat Yeah, reading it now.

There's a lot to read there :P

A tilde on a n makes it a nj

Either way, thanks for the email! :)
@DanPantry Nope. ~15 means "about 15."

One of Columbus' ships had one in it's name.

I'm incorrect, sorry

3:21 PM
:)

Oh. Right. I've seen ~= used in a few types of code, I think one was Groovy

@Mast "nj"? I'd put it has "nh", since that's the equivalent sound it makes in Portuguese

@Phrancis ~= is not equal to.
At least it is in Ruby

@EBrown no, that's ≈

@JNat Yes, but I think in English it's more like nj. Not that I would know exactly, English is a second language to me.

@Mast We're getting the "standard elevation" - which is the yellow house second from the left in the first row - except that ours will be the mirror of that, garage on the right. Two foot rear extension, triple window and gas fireplace in family room. Solid hardwood floors throughout the entire first floor except the family room.

@JeroenVannevel @EBrown you're both correct

@JeroenVannevel Read the article...:P en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilde#As_a_unary_operator

double tilde and single tilde are used for approximate equality

double tilde master race

3:24 PM
Either way, I use single tilde as it's easier to type.

Today I learned

def text = "some text to match"
def m = text =~ /match/
assert m instanceof Matcher
if (!m) {
    throw new RuntimeException("Oops, text not found!")
}
That's what it is in Groovy, for regex
Just a shortcut operator

@JeroenVannevel No need for name-calling.

    local foo = 1
    local bar = 2
    if foo ~= bar then
      print('hello, world')
    end

   > hello, world
in Lua

3:26 PM
If I ever run a bar, I'll name it Foo
5

That's amazing, @Mast.
A bar for programmers. Now that would be awesome.

Definitely.

> You'll probably catch herpes from someone here.

Heya. After seeing the t-shirt tagline post go up I had to drop by.

@Pops Not in the country I currently live. Too much bureaucracy to open anything here.

This question could be suitable for Code Review, as long as (a) your code works as intended, (b) your code is real code, rather than example code, and (c) your code is included in the body of the question. If you wish for a peer review to improve all aspects of your code, please post it on Code Review. — Phrancis 29 secs ago

We need to get a ticket system at my workplace.

@Phrancis And now, fix another 100 in the afternoon?

They can come in handy for sure
We use Oracle RightNow which I think is good. JIRA is really good too.

our helpdesk is like 15 years old I think
really not intuitive at all and it, of course, only works in IE..

We had one like that when I worked at the University. (Only worked in IE, that is.)

ours is the BMC service desk
aka Remedy
so yeah, pretty old

3:43 PM
@EBrown I worked in academia for little over half a year and we had a IE-only helpdesk system there as well. While half the company was running OpenSuse...

@Mast lol
This helpdesk actually uses vbscript in the browser

Ouch.

And has support for Netscape. Jesus christ, this might actually be older than me.

VBscript was the first encounter where I noticed what Runs On My Machine really means.

How did this not fire a FK violation...

3:46 PM
Made a FFT graph in there, which was awesome but worked nowhere except on my machine.

@Phrancis NULL values don't require an FK.

@Phrancis Invalid data got inserted?

Which is why if you absolutely need an FK constraint, you don't use nullable columns.

But svslb_svid should have a FK relation to sv_id in the other table...
Ah

nullable in FK is perfectly fine for 0...1 relationships

3:47 PM
Not if the value is null.

which is why its allowed

If the value is a NULL then no FK is required.

@DanPantry It tends to do that ^^

Ah. What crap design. Why would you make a PK field nullable.
Er
Whatever

3:51 PM
@Phrancis wait, a PK field is nullable?
wat

No, I thought about it wrong
I'll just delete it and move on :)

Q: The error that made me so I cannot make the Snake game program work

Rabbit_500When i built and run the c++ program in CodeBlocks I have a error. _sleep was not declared in this scope or _sleep cannot be used as a function. Why?

@CaptainObvious

@CaptainObvious Because you didn't read the manual Because you don't even know what a manual is

@DanPantry lucky you. I came in this morning and *my whole frakkin laptop was frozen with Outlook, SSMS and 3 Visual Studio instances. Frozen so hard I had no other option but to hold down the power button for 5 seconds

3:55 PM
@Mat'sMug Oh, no, VS is just the tip of the iceberg, frozen at 700MB of memory.

Even Task Manager froze

Another 1.2GB being used up by SQL server and 300MB by SSMS
I have 8GB of RAM in this machine, yet I somehow feel limited to about 2GB of it.

Does anyone else besides me have "commitment anxiety"?
begin transaction;
    --select *
    delete
    from SUPPLY_VENDORS_SERVICELINES_BRANCHES
    where svslb_id = 936
--commit transaction;
rollback transaction;

@Phrancis I do, but not with SQL ;-)

@Phrancis let me guess, production database?

4:01 PM
@Mat'sMug Oh yes, a big one too

@CaptainObvious Wow, that was quick

Take out the where clause, for fun :-)

HOLY CARP - Instant heart attack

sql on production databases is the reason i have anxiety with sql

4:01 PM
@MathiasEttinger

in my first job on my first day i managed to truncate (not delete) an entire database table
in production
never again

Ouch, hope they had backups

the other thing that gives me anxiety is the stupid.. progress spinner in ssms
because half the time the program locks up or takes a second too long on something that should be simple and you think "oh crap, did I just accidentally the database"

I can't use SDL either. Can't I make a simple game?!?

Because games are hard and you've given all of 2 hours maximum trying to use SDL since you decided you couldn't use another different library.

4:06 PM
@Gustavo6046 PyGame

@Mat'sMug

Yeah @Gustavo6046 getting setup for games requires a pretty extensive amount of time with any language and library, just because there are so many moving parts to make work
Getting setup with Java & libGDX was a nightmare for me

I think I will rather choose Stencyl...

Still doesn't work quite right

@Phrancis the where clause

4:14 PM
?
I meant libGDX still doesn't work quite right

this has got to be the best SSRS trick ever
=IIf
  (
      Fields!SomeField.Value = 0
    , 0
    , Fields!SomeOtherField.Value * Fields!SomeField.Value ^ -1
  )
10
A: SSRS 2008 - Dealing with division by zero scenarios

SkyDknOn reflection, I feel best idea is to multiply by value to power -1, which is a divide: =IIf ( Fields!SomeField.Value = 0 , 0 , Fields!SomeOtherField.Value * Fields!SomeField.Value ^ -1 ) This doesn't fire pre-render checks as val * 0 ^ -1 results in Infinity, not error

@Mat'sMug wat

IIF(bool_expression,value_if_true,value_if_false) evaluates both values, so you can't just do IIF(foo = 0, 0, bar/foo) it will still evaluate to a division by zero error
which is a PITA

@Mat'sMug wat

SSRS really totally needs an Excel-like IFERROR function

why would it not short circuit

that seems dumb

@skiwi hard-to-find energy settings = more battery consumption = more charging = more wear and tear on the charger = more charger replacements = more $$ for the producer.
