Q: Dropdown function

NeedsomehelpIs there a way to simplify this JavaScript function any further? Having to input 4 variables just for a drop-down menu seems a bit ridiculous, and it is hard to keep track of the variables when I want to have more than 1 button. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <style> .dropbtn:hover, .dropbtn:foc...

hello

Did you see the flagfest from earlier?

No, what happened?

Somebody kept flagging stuff on The Nineteenth Byte
ended up like 9~11 total or something
we think it crashed EBrown's chat

lol wtf
I cannot actually see flags. How would it have affected EBrown's chat?

Q: Basic OpenGL drawing shapes

hopjopperI'm drawing shapes to OpenGL using the standard commands and function calls to OpenGL. Everything works fine, however since this is a learning process I know sometimes what works in theory and using simple basic examples doesnt always work in real time situations so I wanted to ask if this is cor...

It really annoys me when people compare C# Extension Methods to modifying a vendor type prototype in JavaScript and using C# extension methods as a justification :s

so I was thinking of writing a project using an XML-like data structure
but all the JavaScript XML methods are ancient and I don't want to use jQuery

Q: Is there any way to remove duplicate code

Kiran NI am new to the jquery , I am able to select the class in <div class = "dropdown> <div class="selected-flag" title="India : +91"> <div class="flag in"> <div class="arrow"></div> </div> </div> </div> I need...

I've seen some developers prefix their Primitive prototypes with underscores
like String.prototype._parseBool

That's just a hack, though :x
why would you prefer "".parseBool instead of parseBool("")

I'm just like 'that doesn't make it acceptable!'

_parseBool does circumvent the naming problems
but it doesn't circumvent the fact that you're still causing a global side effect
and that's where the real heart of the issue is

it's also bad to maintain and un-user friendly

9:58 AM
I mean Ruby allows you to do it even easier than JavaScript does

Good morning Code Review people. There's this, FYI :)

and it's explicitly outlawed in Ruby.. so why is it ok in javascript?
Hello @JNat

Do you want to pin this @DanPantry?
or actually
pin the stackexchange feed
either way

@Quill It is featured, so it'll show in the community bulletin

We have a lot pinned already, frankly
I already removed something from the pin-wall this morning
And yes, it's a community bulletin

9:59 AM
I also linked to it in my post from yesterday, so no need, I'd say

feel free to take down my pinned message, like it's kinda the opposite of what I was saying
fair enough then

I mean, on my screen I can only see pins and "LOL" :-)

yeah, same. I need to reinstall the chat minifier script

Q: Let's pick t-shirt tagline!

PawełAs you all know, we're very close to sending SWAG to some of you! One of items you'll get is this awesome T-shirt! As you can see, below the logo we placed a very short tagline: "Making code slightly less wrong.". This is the tagline that was proposed in chat. But not everyone is in chat. So w...

I really hope there is an opoprtunity to earn one of those shirts. I'd really like one.

10:06 AM
@DanPantry you should come up with a tagline to do with pedantry

Haha, I'm not that inventive unfortunately

lol answering mine own question

A: Creating PDF files from a ODT template

chillworldLogging multiple languages While you do make usage of logging, you write them in sometimes in Dutch and sometimes in English. Please try to hold to 1 language, preferable English for the logging. Static or not? private final String today = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyyMMdd").format(new Date()); ...

not the main thing what I was looking for but still things I wanted to say for future readers

@Quill "your code: less crap" ;-)

A: Let's pick t-shirt tagline!

QuillYour code... just better I think the phrase came from somewhere on Meta, but I don't know where.

"We remove so much crap from your code you'll think we gave it an enema"
You can see why i do not do marketing.

10:14 AM
wow no thanks

LOL

@Quill does it need to be a oneliner?

I don't think so

Although it's going on a shirt, so I would keep it brief.
> Trust me, I'm a programmer
> Programmer: Someone who solves problems you didn't know you had in ways you don't understand.
that sort of thing

@Phrancis that's a common law feature => point 18

I love that article @chillworld
> 27, the mad girlfriend bug
> When you see something strange happening, but the software is telling you everything is fine.

@DanPantry I once mentioned the pokemon exception handling when I was teaching. Whole class was laughing ;)

Hello @skiwi
> So I was driving along, and my boss rang up, and he said 'You've been promoted.' And I swerved. And then he rang up a second time and said "You've been promoted again.' And I swerved again. He rang up a third time and said 'You're managing director.' and I went into a tree. And a policeman came up and said 'What happened to you?' And I said 'I careered off the road.
Terrible joke from LinkedIn.

indeed terrible

I don't like the sound of "you've been promoted". This means more work for same payage

10:57 AM
@chillworld That entirely depends on who you work for
Fromw here I stand, if you get promoted you should get a pay rise because you're doing more stuff

Zak
If you can't get more compensation (monetary or other) out of a promotion, then it's not a promotion.

I'm corrupted by the Belgian Defence, I get mine raise by keeping breathing, if I do a lot of work or not, that doesn't matter

@chillworld It is common in the UK to get small raises annually to keep up with inflation (at least, it is in the jobs I've worked)

oh dinner time ;)

Dinner? As far as I know it's also lunch time in Belgium :P

11:00 AM
It's dinner time all of the time if you're brave enough

Q: Comparing dates (without the time part) in Java

Jozef ChocholacekIn my current project, I have to deal a lot with dates, especially checking if the date entered by user is today, or max one year from today etc. As I find the datetime API of Java7 (which I regrettably still have to use) pretty confusing, in order to keep my code clean and reada, I wrote the fol...

I have to wear a tie today. At least I get some creative freedom there, mine has a dragon on it ^^

> You can expect your swag to arrive in the next 42 to 56 days
Meh, seriously.... 28 to 42 would be so much more appropriate.
;-)

@Zak I'm wearing a suit jacket + t-shirt to work. I'm getting a lot of looks (most people wear shirt + jeans)

suit jacket + singlet is the way to go

Seems we're getting swag now? I guess I missed a lot on break :P

Lol, I think Samsung KNOX on my new phone just removed one of the preinstalled apps because it was doing malicious things

I can't stand AV for that reason.

@Quill lol, wot

11:43 AM
! I got the CR swag email !

One of my old phones had serious storage issues, so I had to root it to remove preinstalled apps only to discover the preinstalled Fifa game was half a gigabyte.

@Quill Wow, I've got mail too!

@SuperBiasedMan lmfao
like iPhones

@skiwi wait, what?
@DanPantry check yours
Oh right
it was of Graduation date
You were probably p2 at grad

@Quill I won't be getting swag

11:46 AM
CR swag mail?

lol @ 6-8 weeks
Yeah I don't have the e-mail, unfortunately. My bad for not working harder

@JNat is tracking included on these? ^^^ (On the recent MSE one @animuson said tracking was included so I figured it might be)

@skiwi and @Quill gratz
I don't think I get one to ;)

Now let me ping every page 1 and 2 user ;-)

11:48 AM
BTW @Quill definitely put this on your CV if you haven't already
Even I'm quite impressed you're eligible for swag due to how much you're contributed at your age :p

It's pretty much my entire CV ;-;
@DanPantry @EthanBierlein is heaps ahead of (and better) than me (and younger)

@Quill Honestly, I don't know — I'll try to figure that out.

Okay, it doesn't particularly matter

welcome @JNat

a lot of users just remember getting #SOReadyToHelp emails and not the swag is all

11:49 AM
@Quill Yeah but I rarely get to see @EthanBierlein :(
What is ? I know what it stands for

one sec

Damn, so that's over too :(
I just want SO all of the swag damn nabbit

mhh I prefer a CR swag in stead of SO

Oh hey @MatsMug won week one #SOReadyToHelp how come you never said anything? ;-;
or I might've missed it

Aren't they still sending out that swag? Or am I mixing it up with another event they did?

11:58 AM
they are still sending out the swag they gave away on the Meta posts
but not the #SOReadyToHelp swag

Ah, ok.
I just know that eventually something is arriving here.
