@Malachi On one machine
would it be a good for my home computers?
is there any restrictions that I should know about?
Not any that I'm aware.
Well, it may or may not expire after a year, I'm still not sure.
I currently have an expired version of 2010 on my computer right now, that bugs me every time I open any office app. can I do macros and stuff in the apps?
Zak
Zak
@Malachi I've got 365. I use it exactly the same as I've used all previous iterations of Office.
IIRC you can do such things just fine.
14:06
@Zak awesome. I am going to get it
I'd check to make sure, but I don't have the machine available ATM.
@Mat'sMug does RubberDuck work on Office 365?
Zak
Zak
Main difference of concern is ongoing contract vs one-time purchase
@Malachi That is a good question, to which I don't know the answer
I couldn't try it out because I was either at work or on linux
@Malachi I wouldn't see a reason why it wouldn't.
If it doesn't, I'd say RubberDuck needs to support it in the near future.
14:09
@Malachi RubberDuck is the person, Rubberduck is the Add-In
Well they should both support it! lol
What Can can, can Can alone.
I have no idea how, but one of our sql devs has somehow turned this:
INSERT [dbo].[TRANSLATION] ([TRANSLATIONKEYID], [LANGUAGEID], [TRANSLATION], [RECID]) VALUES (804, NULL, N'Team', 2714)
INSERT [dbo].[TRANSLATION] ([TRANSLATIONKEYID], [LANGUAGEID], [TRANSLATION], [RECID]) VALUES (805, NULL, N'Full Name', 2715)
into this:
INSERT [dbo].[TRANSLATION] ([TRANSLATIONKEYID], [LANGUAGEID], [TRANSLATION], [RECID]) VALUES (805, NULL, N'Team', 2714)
INSERT [dbo].[TRANSLATION] ([TRANSLATIONKEYID], [LANGUAGEID], [TRANSLATION], [RECID]) VALUES (805, NULL, N'Full Name', 2715)
causing the latter translation to overwrite the former. WTF.
It's called a typo.
@Mast its a copy and paste job.
I wrote the SQL out myself.
With the correct values.
Not only that but he did it twice
14:13
The obvious conclusion would be his copy+paste skills suck.
I still have zero clue why on earth we are using identity insert for this..
Zak
Zak
@DanPantry It took me a whole minute to spot that typo

Q: Javascript - How to properly define the translation limits for this element?

BoelI'm doing an image gallery carousel with javascript, but I'm stuck trying to implement the left and right limits of the carousel. I'm listening to touch events to translate the carousel according to the movement of the X axis. var that = this; this.container = document.querySelector(".gallery"...

@DanPantry Typo? Good question
ANother SQL dev issue
The SQL devs are refusing to keep their changes in source control because they have to make so many changes they "can't keep up"
lol funny (but not funny)
Which just caused an issue when one of the stored procedures on my local dev environment was out-of-step with one on the live and UAT environment, causing a critical function of live + UAT to be unavailable to users.
And of course, because I am maintaining the front end of that feature, I'm the one that looks bad because it isn't working.. |:
OMG its nto even that they arent keeping their changes in source control
They aren't keeping entire stored procedures in source control
6
14:33
boss is going to throw the book at them tomorrow, excellent
not wanting to get my team mates in trouble but not using source control because "there's too many changes" is hilarious. thats exactly what source control is meant to help with.
Zak
Zak
@DanPantry There's not being a dick, and then there's not being an idiot
Why are so many kind-hearted developers silly?
@DanPantry arent they just being lazy?
@kayess I don't know whether it is being lazy or ignorance.
Or whether the TFS UI is just that difficult in SSMS?
I don't know how you can be in a large company and be ignorant to source control
I had an ex-collegue here who had stated that using a source control is just a waste of time..
14:36
Then again, I've said before, in my last company, "source control" was .zipping up a source folder and putting a date/time stamp on it.
please save me git
@DanPantry You can't :p
TFS all the way! :p
Zak
Zak
TFS?
you can actually save the whole SQL file into a project
@kayess ಠ_ಠ
14:37
TFS = Team Foundation Server, by Microsoft
I couldn't figure out how to use TFS from SSMS
Zak
Zak
SSMS?
As in for source control :x
I am not sure that you can directly connect to TFS from SSMS. but I might have been using an old version
@kayess ... ಠ_ಠ
14:38
That's what we use here, and I must admit it is quite lovely
@Zak SQL management studio
Back in time we even wrote our own 'source control' for Visual Foxpro 6.0
@Malachi You can't, AFAIK
SQL Server Management Studio
@Phrancis I am pretty sure there is some plugin for it
....I hope there is some plugin for it
14:38
you can save your Query from SSMS and then Save it to a Project in TFS (VS)
otherwise TFS is just getting more and more obtuse by the minute
You can, however, use VS / TFS to write & run SQL queries
@DanPantry whats wrong with TFS ?.p
and you can work on SQL Files from VS
I liked TFS for as much as I used it
@kayess merdé command line, ties you to visual studio/microsoft products, slows down your development because every 'check in' requires a round trip which discourages micro commits, no rebase, branching is awful, merging requires sacrificing your firstborn
14:40
I wish they would have started using it before I got there though... would have made my job a whole lot easier.
say what you will about tfs I'm sure its brilliant for C# projects
but for javascript and sql, no. let me stick with git
yup its all'round tool for us, for C# projects
they are text files, I don't need a 600MB Behemoth of an IDE to edit js and sql and I'd rather not be tied to using it instead of lightweight sublime text which doesn't crash every time I look at it in a vaguely threatening manner
is it a holiday today?
@Malachi I know its a bank holiday in Belgium on Wednesday..

Bank Holiday on a Wednesday? That's a bit sucky.

Q: Usertool For Website Admins -- Follow up

Lost BamAwhile ago I posted about creating a user tool for forum admins that allows them to add, edit, and delete users from their desktops. This still is not complete, posting for review on tool so far I've finished with the delete_user method and also added a couple new features to it, what this code ...

@DanPantry Oh I didn't try using .sln yet. I honestly don't know. But apart from that it's great
But you will get carded if you look under 25 for a lot of controlled substances, such as alcohol, knives, scissors and cigarettes... and in some cases lottery tickets, depending on how anal the shop keeper is.
That depends (TM)
Which is also, incidentally, why I order take aways more than I cook. because I don't have knives. At least that's the excuse I am using. Dominos is nice, leave me alone.
14:49
Here, you are only allowed to sell lottery tickets above 18.
I'm actually 21 in 6 weeks.
How do I get off Mr Bones' Wild Ride?
@TopinFrassi I'll look it up when I get home. Its nice to see Microsoft at least trying to realise "Hey, Open Source exists".
@DanPantry Yeah indeed :p I think it's worth it. It supports many cool things that are more lightweighted that VS
@TopinFrassi Looks like VSCode supports msbuild files (*.sln)
@DanPantry Nice! That could be handful for me, thanks for checking it out!
I'm using VSCode as well for NodeJS right now
that reminds me though -- I installed the NodeJS tools for VS. I want to try that
14:55
@JeroenVannevel stick with VSCode
VSCode was written specifically for debugging stuff like node and being lightweight
VS node tools will be a shim, VSCode supports it as a first class citizen
I don't know why, but this line from the AWS docs made me laugh:

just you try and stop me from creating a bucket from within a bucket.

There's "a byte array". It would be best not to mix concepts of binary and text data... "string" has a textual implication in Java, so I'd strongly advise against using it for binary data. Additionally, this code is mutable (unlike String), exposes its underlying byte buffer directly, ignores the equals method (providing "compare" instead, whereas "compare" is usually used for ordering operations). It ignores Java naming conventions both for the class name and the substr method (which would be substring). This isn't code I'd use.
