@JeroenVannevel I am exactly the same. I've yet to find a genre of music (except perhaps rap and the more screechy end of metal/rock) that I don't enjoy listening to under certain circumstances.
In the last week, I've been hopping back and forth between my PunkRock playlist, my Pirates of the Carribean soundtrack, some DnB, some 80's/90's pop and a playlist I've yet to put a genre to :)
@RubberDuck And to everybody's surprise, I kinda liked Windows NT4.0. It was as bad as Vista and as hard to make it work as Linux without a GUI, but once you got it working well and stable it would be as fast as Windows XP

This question [VBA] "Macros treat these 2 array declarations differently: array and array(). Why?" , which site should I post it to? Not sure if it belongs on SO or not
Sounds like an SO question to me @Zak, but the question is unclear atm.
I looked if the answer was already on Google, and I ended up reading if it is safe to use !p if a null-pointer isn't all-0 in some architectures, in C and C++
Have you checked ChipPearson's site? It explains the array syntax really well Zak.

That's actually a very good question. Wish I was in front of my laptop. Try inspecting the types in the local window while stepping through the code. One is a variant array declaration while the other is a plain variant declaration. Not sure why they're treated differently though.
Zak
Zak
I HATE not understanding how/why things work. I can let it go when it's only peripherally related or of passing interest, but if my code breaks because I didn't understand why these arrays are, in fact, different from each other, then that suggests there's other things I don't understand which could (and probably will) cause more problems down the line.
Post to SO.

@RubberDuck I still don't have an answer. Right now, my best guess is that one is an array contained in a variant, and one is a pointer contained in a variant which points to an array. Or something similar.
Unless/until I get an answer over on SO, I think I'll just shift to declaring all my arrays as variants first

Hello @Phrancis
13:42
@RubberDuck It's possible that you may have missed a point I was making...
Certainly possible. Which one?
About if we don't document weirdness, we've documented there shouldn't be any.
I was about to run to the store; I can elaborate later.
But in your example of good doc comments, the methods within the class (in this case, just constructors) don't have doc comments.
Ahh. No. You're right. I caught that, but neglected to mention it.
So since there's no comments on those methods, we haven't documented anything about them.
When we're talking about doc comments, the lack of a comment doesn't document anything.
Everything public should have doc comments.
There's not really anything to document. That was part of my point. Don't document the obvious.
13:47
Right, but... what happens if you pass in null for one of the constructor arguments? Or an empty string?
(That's a common thing I'd put in my iOS doc comments with a warn tag.
or warning whatever it is exactly
Good point. I'll fix that.
In other news.
Code to be reviewed must be your code and directly embedded here. I'm afraid this is starting to sound like an off topic question. — RubberDuck 1 min ago
How about show your current solution? Also, there is a whole another section for code reviews: codereview.stackexchange.comRoope just now
The real point is, for stuff we are exposing publicly, the lack of a doc comment means nothing is documented. A doc comment which specifies weirdness documents weirdness. The only way to document no weirdness publicly is to leave a doc comment which just states the obvious. Doc comments are different from normal comments in this regard.
Most importantly, doc comments serve a different purpose from regular comments.
Well, we disagree on that.
13:55
I personally really don't like having 3 lines of cruft restating the obvious. It'd be different if you're writing some kind of library for outside consumption I suppose.
How about some library-like code in a project that will be worked on by 10 developers and you may not always be on the project?
Or an internal library?
@RubberDuck define "outside"
the problem is, the doc-comment is what becomes accessible the quickest for method x
How about in a 250k line iOS app that has been around since like iOS 3.0 and worked on by at least three different 3rd party vendors so far?
@Vogel612 Thanks again for your input.
and if there's no comment, every dev has to go down the rabbit hole, which takes time
13:58
And when devs go down rabbit holes, they find things they want to fix.
Or what if English isn't your first language and your method name isn't as obvious as you think it is? (I'm looking at you, India)
I'm not arguing those things, but how ambiguos can ctor(string username, SecureString password) be?
@RubberDuck possibly example code / not your code?
(don't want to hammer it, yet...)
Yeah... I wouldn't either, but I settled on "Code not written yet". It's copy/pasted from that blog and OP is really asking for an implementation. It wouldn't even be a good SO question.
Again, @RubberDuck what happens with nil strings or empty strings?
Hi. Feel free to post your code in link. Just make sure it conforms to the posting rules: It is your code, It works and the code is embedded in the question. — Zak 15 secs ago
14:03
Anyway, that's the rub for me. We wouldn't tolerate restating the obvious in the code, why would we restate the obvious for a doc comment.
That's how ambiguous.
> <Summary>Returns a new instance of <see cref="Credentials"/></Summary>
Because doc comment serves a different purpose
I'm afraid @nhgrif is right here ^^
JavaDoc tends to be terribly repetitive, yet they still exist.
And if you have multiple constructors, why? What's the difference? How do I pick the right one?
14:07
They're not multiple ctors. They're different implementations of a base class.
And that is documented.
I mean, at the end of the day, the only way I would write the kind of docs you're talking about is if I was shipping the prettified docs for an API out to a paying customer.
Well I know in this case, yes
@RubberDuck so if you're shipping it to a different dev within your team, you're okay with them wasting time diving into looking at implementations or coming to ask you?
And you're okay with increased ramp up times for new devs to learn internal libraries or projects?
I don't see how it would create an increased ramp up time.
I'm not saying document everything but anything library-esque, which will certainly include things like model classes, code for talking to the server API
I'm not saying documenting is a waste of time, I'm saying it gets in the way of the code if you're constantly restating the obvious.
If you're going to do that, then the documentation needs to be kept separate from the code with something like the <include> tag.
Otherwise, you'll never get more than one property on your screen at a time, which makes it harder to see what's going on. The exact opposite of what those docs are supposed to be doing.
Well, the point is, once the class is written and doc'ed, you shouldn't need to be in it messing around as much. The doc comments are to save people from looking at the implementation
14:15
@RubberDuck did you ever look at the source code of the Java standard library?
And they describe what is done, not how it is done
I'm gonna need a new auto-comment soon
I would recommend that you instead of posting this as an answer to this question, post a new question and ask how you can improve your solution. Code Review is not for people to share how they would solve something, it is rather for telling programmers "this specific thing you can do better". — Simon André Forsberg ♦ 21 secs ago
on a related note, every halfway decent IDE supports documentation folding,
When people are looking at the how, they might start using a method for its how rather than what it does. Relying on an implementation specific side effect.
Which means if you change the how but not the what, you might have created bugs because you killed the side effect
That's a good point, but nothing you say will convince me that it's worthwhile to write doc comments like Summary>Returns a new instance of <see cref="Credentials"/></Summary> for a constructor. Not everything needs a doc comment.
14:24
which doesn't mean Doc-Comments are useless, even if they restate "the obvious"
@RubberDuck that doc comment implies it is okay to pass null and empty strings. That's what it documents which shouldn't be assumed or considered obvious
Wow. You really don't trust other developers do you?
from painful experience..

forum in that sense is not inherently thread-based conversation

"Forum: a meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged."
This is the easiest way to see it:
- Forum <- a "conversation" about something
- Q&A <- you ask a question, and you receive answers
Zak
Zak
sure, but I'd like to think sites like this have elements of both
sure, some questions can just be "answered"
Consider the chat a forum, but the site itself isn't.
@Zak Why not?
Actually
The meta would be the forum about the Q&A main counterpart
Zak
Zak
but I feel like, this site at least, often creates a level of discussion around things
15:43
It depends
Code Review pushes a little on the discussion part
Some questions on Stack Overflow as well
You'll see that almost no website creates an environment for discussion
@IsmaelMiguel A duck with brains? :o
@Morwenn The key on it's right
Talking about me @Morwenn?
@RubberDuck TIL ducks have brains.
Who told me to buy the stupid coclock?
15:47
@IsmaelMiguel A fuck with brains?
Close
But that would have to be f*cker

On an entirely separate topic. I feel like I'm finally getting this refactoring thing. I keep spotting new things I can split into separate methods :)
that's the start..
then you may begin to notice groups of methods that belong together
and data structures that belong together..
and suddenly you have classes:)
auto complexity = POLDER_COMPLEXITY( O(n * log(n)) );
Zak
Zak
you know. After a quick google search, I think this is the first time I've actually got a handle on what a class is.
by no means completely, but there's enough there for my brain to hook into and get something of a feel for it
15:52
In what language?
Zak
Zak
VBA
VBA has classes? o.O
@IsmaelMiguel keep on dreaming, then :)
VBA is more OOP than JS
I had no idea
Honestly
I though it was a procedural language
With a small touch of OOP
And I had 1 year of VB.net
The teacher that gave me classes of C# was the same same that gave me VB classes

is this question just not interesting? i don't really like the only answer (not much of a code review), but i don't want to place a bounty on it either:

Q: Convert Bitmap Font to Texture Atlas

bazolaI wanted to render the textures that comprise a bitmap font glyph onto the screen directly as an Image in libGDX. When you make a bitmap font using a program (such as Hiero), it generates a text readable .fnt file along with a .png file that is the sprite sheet for the font. The only thing missi...

Q: Is VBA an OOP language, and does it support polymorphism?

Axel BorjaI am actually working on my first VBA project. (come from C++) I would like to improve an existing VBA project used by a Microsoft Excel workbook by implementing classes and polymorphism. My problem is: 1 - I read a lot of articles/forums which explain that VBA is not an Object Oriented Progra...

@bazola The only answer doesn't provide much of a review, but the content is still applicable. I just don't have enough knowledge about Java. I've made a few reviews on Java questions but it was something basic and not in-depth
@RubberDuck I saw it before
Sorry :/
I really need more RAM
@bazola That answer isn't top notch indeed. Is that version still the most recent? If not, you may want to put up the most recent version.
You are learning an important thing or two about the value of unit tests, especially how they are not a replacement for code reviews and functional testing. Please refer to stackoverflow.com/help/mcve to find out how to show us a code example that allows us to identify the error. — Christian Hackl 32 secs ago
I find it interesting, but I don't know jack about graphics.
16:14
^ that mostly
it is the most recent. i haven't made any changes since posting it for review
I know too little about Java to even comment on it
if someone else wants to post an answer, i will definitely accept that one over the current one
@bazola Put some points on it, should help.
Now, you guys, write the guy a decent answer.
hmm...
16:20
Or is 50 not enough nowadays?
we've grown fancy
You're not accounting for inflation
@Mast much appreciated :)

I'm actually starting to understand references like this "it's [VBA's] definitely the bastard step-child of OO languages"
@bazola No problem, I just hope it gives the question the necessary attention to get it a decent answer.
@Zak it really really is.
16:35
@Zak VBA was written for one purpose and only that purpose. Languages like that have some quirks.
The same way Java was built to shorten the lifespan of its developers. It has some quirks but it does its job well
