For this kind of query I think codereview.stackexchange.com might be more suited — beresfordt 26 secs ago
I got a brainfart and some thoughts came out of it...
Suppose I have this 'code'
hand list max 10
deck list

//with the following operation at some point
pop deck push hand
Does that come close to an already existing language?
reminds me a bit about Scala
@Gemtastic Can you create a VM through Hyper-V?
Scala allows space in some cases, for example: Java code obj.list() becomes Scala: obj list
You might be able to do that and run Linux on it.
20:04
Or obj.list(42) becomes Scala: obj list 42
@Hosch250 I have cygwin?
but I don't know how to use it :(
@SimonAndréForsberg Thanks for replying. I'm trying to replace the text editor for commits, I tried the command `config --global core.editor "C:/Program Files/Sublime Text 2/sublime_text.exe`

But when I try and commit I get an error message saying there's no such file/directory. Not sure what's going on.
OK, I was thinking you could just create a Hyper-V VM and put Linux on it.
No specific question really, was just looking to see if there was any advice as to how I implemented the program in Java. I will look at the formatting rules for Java and post my code to codereview. Thanks. — Sparkz 46 secs ago
I'm running Windows 10 like this now, but I'm not using it much because Windows 8.1 is better.
20:07
I have no idea what hypr-v is
@Legato 1. i se no " at the end. 2. It is likely that it breaks because of the spaces. Try this: config --global core.editor "C:/Program\ Files/Sublime\ Text\ 2/sublime_text.exe"
Hyper-V, codenamed Viridian and formerly known as Windows Server Virtualization, is a native hypervisor; it can create virtual machines on x86-64 systems. Starting with Windows 8, Hyper-V supersedes Windows Virtual PC as the hardware virtualization component of the client editions of Windows NT. A server computer running Hyper-V can be configured to expose individual virtual machines to one or more networks. Hyper-V was first released along Windows Server 2008 and became a staple of the Windows Server family ever since. == §History == A beta version of Hyper-V was shipped with certain x86...
Windows 8/8.1 has it for sure, not sure about 7-.
I used this blog post to get started:
@SimonAndréForsberg Thank you so much, that was it!
I helped people on the MS Forums for a while, and he was there too.
I learned a lot from his answers.
@SimonAndréForsberg Hm okay, I was there trying to write down how I would "code" HearthStone in a way that is most close to how humans would explain it to others
20:11
@skiwi What you did there does not look like how I would explain it to other humans.

Q: Program for a packing company

SparkzIt's my first year in college studying Java so please excuse my ignorance in programming. Q: Determining prices for wholesalers or retailers

If you've got something that is actually working, you just think it could be made more effecient, you could post your working version to Code Review and reviewers could look at making it more efficient. Don't post a question there without posting your actual implementation however. — nhgrif 39 secs ago
@SimonAndréForsberg Well, it needs to be somewhat close to code
I mean when explaining to someone else I won't literally say "hand list max 10", but you can say that you have a hand with a max size of 10
20:28
@skiwi so... something more similar to hand = new Hand(); hand.setMaxSize(10); ?
@SimonAndréForsberg By example yes
There's a 0.01% chance I'll end up creating my own programming language
finishing it, or starting it?
BRACKETS! WHERE ARE YOUR BRACKETS!?!?
@nhgrif That was awesome.
20:44
I did read only the beginning of the question (I'm not in the mood for code review, sorry), but here's a suggestion: add a single execute method to the client interface, which returns a Future. This way, it can be an implementation detail whether you implement it synchronously or asynchronously. — lbalazscs 1 min ago

Q: Improving LINQ expression with inner method call and switch statement

RuhrpottpatriotI have the following class which returns an expression that then returns data. Q: Implementing Caeser Cipher in C

Programm-istI am trying to implement a "Caeser cipher" to every lower case character in a string, by using a number to control the amount of character rotation. Here is an algorithm that I came up with, can you please review and give me some feedback. Note the program is written in C programming language. #...

Q: Fisher-Yates shuffle in Scheme

Chris Jester-YoungThere are many ways to shuffle lists; for example, Racket's built-in shuffle assigns each list element with a random number as a sort key, then sorts the list, which provides an O(n log n) runtime. However, I'd like something that's O(n), and that's where Fisher-Yates comes in. Fisher-Yates is d...

I made this comment:
Honestly, I'd be extremely wary about using this implementation unless you've profiled extensively and found it to be faster. If you're shuffling small lists (lists of less than 100,000 elements), shuffle seems to be significantly faster. I'd guess this is a result of the expensive list to vector conversion, which is already O(n) and involves much more memory allocation. — Alexis King Mar 9 at 8:10
Is that a valid answer? It doesn't feel like an appropriate answer to say "my advice is to not do what you're doing".
@AlexisKing feels like "don't do what you're doing" is one of the most common advices around here.
Just out of curiousity, your comment make it sound like you did some benchmarking of the code, did you?
@SimonAndréForsberg Some very primitive benchmarking, yes.
22:15
then I'd say that your comment is a valid answer. If you can, include some actual data for your benchmark, that's always interesting to see
Alright, I'll do that, then.
Scheme seems to have an interesting ugly way to make code blocks. So instead of "arrow code" you get a line that ends with ))))))...
Morning, Australia!
@SimonAndréForsberg With a half-decent text editor and some experience, you don't even see the parentheses anymore. ;)
God morgon, Sverige!
Hello, Google Translate!
22:19
ah you caught me :)
@SimonAndréForsberg the only word i can remember is "lagom". feels like everyone wanted to teach me that word
Yes. That is a good word.
You should learn my word next!
Read my user profile on CR!
@Duga there's a typo in your profile!
"literary" -> "literally"
I was just about to ask "Did I misspell literary again?"
@rolfl Are you able to change user profiles? ^^
@SimonAndréForsberg there was also some swedish word for like, dirty grey slushy snow, but i can't remember what it was
@SimonAndréForsberg that rings a bell
yeah... that's quite common in the winters :)
you've met Swedes in AU?
yes, and also when i went to sweden :)
oh!?
What's her name? ;)
haha
i went there for emmabodafestivalen (sp?)
22:27
oh dear. There's so many festivals around here I don't keep track of them
I think I've heard of it
sort of between stockholm and malmo, from memory
people there were so friendly. i'd walk around the festival and people would talk to me in swedish. when i said i couldn't speak swedish they were like OH WHERE ARE YOU FROM, COME MEET MY FRIENDS
and drag me off to their camp site. they'd introduce me and tell everyone to speak in english while i was around
yup, that sounds like swedes...
you were exotic
now I just wish they were just as friendly towards everybody else too :P
the fact that they introduced you to their friends is a good sign, for you
haha come to australia, there's a similar attitude here
22:32
awesome
I've wanted to visit Australia for quite some time
perhaps if I go there I will be the exotic one :)
i moved from canberra to melbourne soon after i was in sweden. i thought it was so easy meeting people. when i got here i was like, hey, how's it going? i just moved here from canberra! and the general reaction was "... so?"
and then people will tell their friends to speak English when I am around, lol
lol i haven't met a swede with less than excellent english
that doesn't sound as friendly
some swedes have funny dialects though
sounds horrible to my ears
my swedish from tom, i thought he was from south africa for the first few weeks i knew him, going off his accent
22:36
Did you mean: swedish friend tom ?
yep... monday morning, can't type
sure, sure, blame it on the weekday
I met an Italian girl at my friends birthday party last week. Oh my good she sounded Italian!
@SimonAndréForsberg do you know the band Kings of Convenience?
well they're a norwegian band, that's the only relevant thing. i went to see them play with some swedish friends a few years back. after the gig some girls mistook my friends for the band and started buying them drinks

they thought i was in the band too, but i was too scared to open my mouth and try a fake accent
@mjolka lol, awesome. I'll remember that next time I go to a concert: Try to look like the band.

Q: Lazy String.Split

MephyC#'s String.Split method comes from C# 2.0, and lazy operations weren't a feature back then. The task is to split a string according to a (single) separator. Doing so with String.Split is used like string[] split = myString.Split(new string[] { separator }); Now, not that bad, but if you want ...

@AlexisKing that's a very informative and interesting answer
23:27
@mjolka yeah, you're right, should've written better unit tests. — Mephy 12 mins ago
should the question stay? should the code be fixed?
You should post an answer that fixes the edge cases.
Consider this recent answer of mine:

A: Checking if a number is prime

nhgrifUnfortunately, your isPrime function returns incorrect results for the squares of odd numbers. This is a pretty common oversight though, so don't feel too bad. A better implementation of isPrime looks more like this: bool isPrime(int num) { if (num <= 3) { return num > 1; } els...

@nhgrif thanks
In which case, it isn't working yet and is off-topic till it is, sadly. You need to get it to function as intended first. Fixing that may even lead you to enlightenment, ofc. — itsbruce 45 secs ago
Well, how badly is it broken?
Does it work in most all cases?
And it simply doesn't work in a few edge cases (which the poster was unaware of)?
} while (index > 0);
isn't it as easy as changing that to >= ?
I don't think it's necessary to close it if it is that simple
also, I'd say this is an edge-case
code has been tested, code works for those cases
it's on-topic
