there is this line of code:
out += content[index] xor password[p] * p % 30
content and password are std::string.
p is an int.
I cannot find a reference for whatever xor is ..... what is that?
Also, by my reckoning, the right-side of the xor "operator" is screwey....
the password[p] will be either associated (via operator precedence) to the xor, or not, and if not, it will be associated with the *....
Now, the * and % have equal precedence, so they follow left-to-right rules.
thus if the xor has higher-than-* precedence, the resulting char to be appended to out will be a value < 30.
if the xor has lower-than-* precedence, the xor will only xor a value < 30, and that's just not very good encryption, to not XOR half your bits.....
(well, no half, but 3 of 8 bits will never be 'encrypted')
Still, to untangle that, I need to know what that xor thing is. I was expecting it to be a language operator, but the official XOR operator is ^, not xor...
and I can't find an 'extension' or anything for xor and char...

04:35
@rolfl xor is considered an alternative operator. I don't know too much about them, but I don't think they offer much benefit over ^.
Thanks, that's what I wass looking for....
I think there was a previous answer here that addressed them.
Anyone in here good with html/CSS?
04:50
1K!!!
2
@rolfl xor is a gcc extension to the c++ operators
or it least that's what it was initally
You can chortle at my answer there ;-)
usually people would use ^ as this is known to be the xor operator
@shuttle87 1K rep?
@Gemtastic yeah!
@rolfl nice answer
@shuttle87 Congrats! :D
Oops
04:56
@shuttle87 Thanks... I learn something when I post out of my comfort zone .... ;-)
@rolfl: Yeah, I was trying to stay away from the cryptography stuff (with a 60-foot pole). ;-)
I glossed over the actual encryption function a bit as I was answering
Now, in this ideone: ideone.com/uyiyrg
the difference is distinct.... but, I can't seem to make the variables chars.....
the function there is bad for the same reasons rand is bad, the moduolo creates some really bad statistical properties
As chars, there's no output: ideone.com/S4XdAo
04:58
@rolfl static cast to char?
WWLS (What Would Loki Say)
oh that's because they all aren't printable characters most likely?
hmm interesting
I'll compile locally
Oh, yeah, probably....
yeah I think that's it
@Jamal - FYI - This: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/75667/31503 the comments proved to be interesting, but how do they get edited back in to the answer?
05:02
I suppose more of my answers would be better if I actually compiled more of this code. :-P
What, and found the unsigned issue?
encdec.cpp: In function 'std::string encrypt(std::string, std::string)':
encdec.cpp:20:46: warning: comparison between signed and unsigned integer expressions [-Wsign-compare]
encdec.cpp:23:36: warning: comparison between signed and unsigned integer expressions [-Wsign-compare]
I'm just saying so in general. I tend to just study what my brain can find.
interesting that ideone doesn't like that char one
looks like this on my computer with gcc
I shoudl just cast it to int....
@rolfl What do you mean?
05:04
    0 -> } and }
1 -> i and O
2 -> w and
3 -> } and

Q: Is a literate programme tutorial on-topic

CaridorcI decided to write a Literate Programme Tutorial of Python in Python, i.e. a document that contains executable code as well as very extensive comments about the basic functionalties of the code. This "programme" is quite big, 431 lines, but most of it is text explaining what is happening. Is it o...

Q: Sorting function that also works with containers having only forward iterators

JT1I was playing around with some code trying to implement a sorting algorithm that also works with singly linked lists. Since the merge routine of mergesort only scans forward implementing a generic mergesort seemed like the way to go. My code is below: #include <iostream> #include <vector> #include

Awwwww man. Looking at that code again, @200_success was right. I really did make 2 bad decisions for everything I did right....

A: Best of Code Review 2014 - Lots of Laughs category

200_success200_success on Wow that's a big integer! What's its largest prime factor? What a fascinating solution! It seems that for every smart decision you made, you also threw in a poor decision or two. To which RubberDuck said, a month later in chat: This remains one of my favorite reviews. @20...

Q: Refactor jaccard similarity the "Scala way"

steveI'm trying to pick Scala up. This is a simple heuristic that checks a similarity value between two sets. I've done this a million times in Java or Python. The function works, but I'm certain I am not doing this "the Scala way". val a : List[Int] = List(1,1,2,2,3) val b : List[Int] = List(1,2,3,4...

Q: C - Print All Subsets and Permutations of a String

Sky LightnaThe following code is designed to accept a string from the user that is at most 5 characters long. It will then find each possible substring of the string and print all possible permutations of each substring. This is the first time I've done my utmost to prevent memory leaks by freeing every m...

My built-in HDD is making a peculiar whine.
I hope it isn't going bad.
It is.
Uh-oh.
Still on warranty.
Better get HP out, and I have everything backed-up (hurrah!).
@rolfl Are you serious?
If the HDD makes unexpected noise, it is tme to replace it
OK. I'll run a disk checkup.
I've only had this thing for 2 years!
@Hosch250 has it been running non stop for those 2 years?
23:18
@Gemtastic No, only for 12 hours a day, at most.
Probably more like 6-10 hours.
@Hosch250 Was it a cheap brand?
It is a laptop.
The question remains
No, top-of-the-line HP Envy.
But, it does have a large SSD cache, and I understand that is hard on the main HDD because it winds up and down more.
23:21
Thanks, but I love this beast.
Quad-core, really fast.
If your computer has a warranty still you can have it exchanged
@Hosch250 Did you even read the link?
I have a 3 year, complete warranty, but it'll take an hour in a chat to get it exchanged.
Not yet, busy typing :)
@Hosch250 Well, no HDD, no computer.
I know.
I read it now.
Be glad it happened now and not in a year. When the warranty is over, HP is rubbing their hands to have you buy another one,
23:22
No, I'll replace it myself.
I'm good at that kind of stuff.
HP sucks quality wise. I have had acer computers run longer and better.
I am keeping an eye on them and Toshiba for my next one.
How is Toshiba?
@Hosch250 well, if you do it yourself you break the warranty, but meh. I can relate to the feeling of "meh I'll just do it myself"
Don't get Toshiba
@Gemtastic, No, when the warranty is gone, I'll do it myself.
23:23
@Hosch250 Toshiba is just as bad or worse.
OK.
Going to finish entering some school notes in OneNote, then I'll reboot and do a HDD health scan.
It's not like HP manufactures hard drives. They just buy them like everyone else.
Yeah.
@Hosch250 Make sure to back up your hdd now if you want to keep your stuff. It may not live long enough to last through the warranty. because:
7 mins ago, by rolfl
If the HDD makes unexpected noise, it is tme to replace it
Everyone who has ever had a disk fail will say that Brand X is crap.
23:25
@Gemtastic Fully backed up - 10 minutes ago, and only work done is on OneNote, which synces to OneDrive.
By that logic, they're all crap.
@Hosch250 Good boy pats head
@200_success Well.. laptops are
I've read a lot about this kind of stuff.
@Hosch250 FYI, if you can spring for it, replace with an SSD, for a laptop it has many, many advantages
@200_success HP has a lot of heat issues, as well as battery problems. You you run high performance on HP they wear out FAST.
23:26
Sure, system build quality varies a lot. But hard drive quality, not as much.
Used to be one of the top contributors on the MS community forums.
And to be fair, laptops aren't exactly the most durable computers you can buy...
Yeah, I need something portable 'cause it's my only computer.
Looking at the Surface Pro 3 (or later) too.
The Surface 1 Pro is great - my backup, my sister's main.
@Hosch250 - I'm old, got an income, and all those things, but this is my philosophy now-days:
SSD always... because:
Surface comes with an SSD.
23:28
less heat, longer life, no noise, longer battery, faster, etc.
Yeah, I love that Surface.
no moving parts to wear out, and break.
But, the real best benefit?
Except the fan, and it does get hot on movies.
get an Intel disk with full-disk encryption, and have a boot password, and then hibernate the laptop on lid-close.
Surface may be one of the few portable devices on the market today that have any reasonable amount of storage.
23:29
My sister's MacBook Air does too, and that is an SSD.
OK, I'll remember this.
Hibernate restore from an SSD is bearable, and it is password protected, etc.
2009 MacBook been going on strong here. Only added RAM to it once, and reformated a couple of times.
