@skiwi I need to compliment you on your very clean code!
I am curious about the purpose of the underscore in this int: private final static int DAZZLING_ORE_PRICE = 120_000;

@Phrancis It's a thousand seperator in my code
You can however insert them wherever you want in Java ints/longs from Java 7 I think onwards

yes it's Java 7
I am missing that feature in my current project...
conversation.setTimeout(120000);
vs:

Ah ok so it's just for clarity then... instead of writing 120000

conversation.setTimeout(120_000);

Q: Are These Linked Server Queries Susceptible To SQL Injection?

EliasI'm using a stored procedure to generate a create table script on the fly based on parameters passed into it. Going to help a friend code some jQuery, take care all!

Bye @CodeX !
> There is not much code to review... Sounds like this should go to dba.stackexchange.com if your concern is cross-server SQL injection. If you post your whole procedure though we can look it over for best practices and point out any security or performance concerns we notice. – Phrancis just now
^^ anyone else agree?

4:22 PM
Yep.

@kleinfreund Here.
On mobile chat.

Ah, hey there @syb0rg

What did you think of the logo?

Can you send me again what you're working on?

Yeah, one sec
There you go @kleinfreund

4:30 PM
Thank you. Tell me something about it. What do you have in mind? What do you want to achieve?

@syb0rg is that Tritium??

Malachimy voting stats are: I had more down votes than most people for a while, I don't just hand out votes, and I agree with what @Mat'sMug (@RetailCoder, @lol.upvote, ...) said What boggles me, is how reviewers can answer a question that they didn't even upvote. If you can answer a questio...

@Phrancis it's been migrated

@kleinfreund It's simply a mockup logo for a project I am about to release. The final version will be an SVG.

@Malachi cool thanks

@Vogel612 I can imagine your pain

4:42 PM
@Vogel612 Yes, that is the projects name.

Very good decision of making it SVG.

@syb0rg That's a nice one

My site uses a SVG logo and menu icon as well.

@skiwi You like it? Any critiques?
@kleinfreund I heard you could do animation with them as well.

You can: kleinfreund.de
Hover my logo or click the menu icon when browser window is small.

4:44 PM
@syb0rg Perhaps some kind of clue that not all three of the particles are the same?

However animating them with CSS alone (no JavaScript) doesn't work on SVG's in IE at all.
+ what Donald said.
Clarify, that the proton is different.
Visually.

How would you guys do that? Some sort of color scheme?

@syb0rg No critiques honestly, I just like it
And I'm impressed that others can make CSS logos so easily, while I can't :p
Thanks for including a "domain knowledge" section to your post. I wish everyone would do this. — toto2 3 mins ago
Yay
But such a question as I asked, I do not think you can just present the code with bam here's the code, go figure whatever you want to do with it..

Not sure, @syb0rg First thing I possibly would change is leaving out the hexagon. Keep it stupid simple. The hexagon doesn't fit a purpose there. Emphasis is the element.
afk.
I come back. ;)

@skiwi If I were to add color to differentiate the proton and the neutron, would you still like it?

4:51 PM
@syb0rg If you add a black and white color, then yes

@kleinfreund Hmm, good thought.

That sounds weird what I just said
just grayscale, I don't know if it helps to add the real grayscale, I doubt many people are familiar with it either way

@skiwi.Do you think the proton should be darker then the neutron or vice versa?
@skiwi I was thinking about adding a light tinge of red to the proton and a light tinge of blue to the electron. Then just leave the neutron white.

I would first associate them with red and blue, but that may be biased because of models about them, then take the grayscale... About which color is which, no clue
Wow, 10 upvotes in an hour already... That may be the best CR question I've made untilt oday

Which one?
Ahhh, found it
Only 30 rep away from 7K.

5:01 PM
@syb0rg: Now what?

Congrats @syb0rg !

Try these: #FF4136 (red); #0074D9 (blue)

@kleinfreund Or this: #BADA55 <- Light green

That's nice as well, right. ;)

@ckuhn203 I was thinking of doing something similar to your question but with MySQL... but if this works good maybe I can use that myself instead?
How would I got about inserting recurring events, say rent or a bill being due, paycheck received, work schedule, etc.

It works @Phrancis. The GUI's kind of ugly though.

Can you attach a screenshot in chat? It won't let me look at it from work

6:26 PM
Would it work on a Mac too?

Yeah. It runs on google's server.

Ah nice

Most of it runs from a custom menu I added to the spreadsheet. So there's not much to show. Just the delete functionality needed additional GUI.
I don't know which is the bigger PITA though, google's IDE or JavaScript.

That thing sucked to write.
It's been a long time since I had to sit down with the API docs to write code.

So speaking of spreadsheets, last week I saw a colleague who is an admin, and she was tabbing between spreadsheets copying and pasting one field at a time. I told her to hold on 5 minutes and let me look at it. Fired up Access and wrote like 3 lines of SQL script, ran it, and in a split second it matched up all 4000 some odd records for her. She was happy.

Q: Protect database from SQL Injection and similar attacks - PHP

Anduriti am thinking about secure of my php code. I am new in programming but want to learn things secure, protect my database from SQL Injection and similar things, so here is my code guys, can u tell me if its possible to get to DB with this? public function __construct( $data = array() ) { ...

8:38 PM
^^ oh no, not another question
Huh - actually his PHP code is very well made. Maybe I can tell him about SQL PROCEDURE... but seems like overkill for this:
$sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = :username AND password = :password LIMIT 1";

I think a procedure for that could be overkill.
Flame him for the Select * though. =)

8:54 PM
I guess I came late today.

@ckuhn203 Nothing wrong with SELECT * I don't think, if he is looking to do just that. Hard to say though what other columns are in there. His use of PDO is pretty airtight

@Phrancis Blasphemy! You shouldn't ever do that in production code.
It's can cause inefficient query plans.
And generally returns more data than you actually need.

Ah. Well a PROCEDURE would fix that now wouldn't it ;)
But yeah I see your point

SELECT * in applications is bad because if you add fields to a table, you have to refactor all of your legacy code.

@Phrancis Not if your procedure does the same thing. It's also bad because let's say I want just 2 out of 5 columns.
Select * has to go out and get the metadata for all of those columns, not just the two with a pretty index on it.

9:06 PM
Roger, good information

TTGH. See ya fellas.

See you.

@ckuhn203 - Or worse, if you only want 3 out of 80 columns. If you are returning 50000 results, you quickly starting eating up memory.

Oh, your answer hasn't been posted yet. That's what led to my confusion. =)

And nobody noticed that he's doing a select * limit 1 on the username/password?
Why are you doing a select * ... limit 1? That implies that you could have an instance of duplicate usernames and duplicate passwords. And if that is the case, the person listed second in the db will always log in as the first person. — JohnP 2 mins ago

Wait, does Java really allow you to return arrays, not just a pointer?

10:44 PM
@Jamal - AFAIK, yes.

@Jamal Yes

Nice
I just saw that in the JDQ, which I was sure was correct.
What do you call such arrays (int[]) in Java anyway? Just... plain arrays?

10:58 PM
@Jamal There is no pointers in Java. Only object references. (which is kinda the same thing as a pointer)
Or well, not the same thing... but, that's the closest to a pointer you're gonna get :)
@Jamal We just call them arrays, what else should we call them?
int arrays even :)

@SimonAndréForsberg Yeah, except you cannot assign them to NULL, right?

@Jamal Sure you can. int[] numbers = null;

@SimonAndréForsberg I don't know. :-) In C++, they're "informally" called C-style arrays. In C... they're just arrays. Okay, that was a bit awkward. :-P

Learning JAVA @Jamal? ;)
@sim hit 20k yet?

@Jamal What you cannot do however is the typical C magic where you move the pointer.

11:03 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I meant something like int i = 0; &i = NULL;

@Mat'sMug You're one to talk! Where you've been? That fun at work, huh?

@Mat'sMug Sadly, no. :-/ I just happened to take a peek at JD's Q, and I got curious.

@Jamal There's no such thing as &i. &i is a bitwise operation. You cannot make it a pointer in Java like that.
@Jamal I believe we're all very happy that you're not learning JAVA. Please, Oh please, learn Java though.

I'll get my own "cubicle" after the vacations... till then you're likely to win the race ;)
...actually during vacations I'll probably hit 20k

@Mat'sMug I estimate that I'll reach 20K within 3 weeks. Today is the only day so far I'm scoring less than my target of 90 rep.
I feel the target is coming closer. Only 1839 to go!
That's like... 9 days of rep-capping.

11:09 PM
I'm trying to write 1 answer per day, gets me ~50-100 rep daily... but not sure I can do it every day :(

@SimonAndréForsberg And it's good that I'm getting the kinks worked out now. ;-) I haven't even truly started learning yet, and I'm already baffled.

@Mat'sMug I've written zero answers today, scored 65. Zero answers two days ago, scored 95 that day... I have no idea how I manage to do it though.

Lol I might be responsible for some of it ;)

@Mat'sMug Really? I thought it was Santa.
@Jamal Just don't think too much of C++ when you do Java. I can't understand why you haven't started learning Java already :) It's so easy to download JDK and Eclipse and start coding!

You know, I have identity issues!

11:14 PM
I think I'm just a little too cautious about starting off with a bad resource. But, to be fair, my start with C++ wasn't so great, and I still turned out okay.
But I can at least install Eclipse.

...seriously. I don't know what I am. Not quite a programmer but writes code; not a DBA but manages databases, ..and the title is "business analyst".

Hey there CR :)

I forecast sales and plan buys, too

@Jamal Bad resource? You have a chat room with several experienced Java developers at your disposal! Are you calling us bad!?

Hey @alex!

11:17 PM
@Jamal That's the spirit! And don't forget the JDK! Or perhaps Eclipse will come bundled with it. Either way: oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/…

@SimonAndréForsberg Nah, I meant a book. The only one I have is Big Java, and the reviews I've seen weren't too great. I happened to receive that book from my first C++ professor.

Time to get the kids into bed, later! ('night @Europe!)

@Jamal Skip the book. The chatroom and Oracle's tutorials have everything that you need! And Ctrl+Space in Eclipse coverse the rest ;) eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-standard-44/lunar
@Mat'sMug Night @Mugland!

Effective Java, when you get up to speed

@SimonAndréForsberg I suppose I can still use the book for some sort of reference. I'm not yet sure what my class' textbook will cover.
Would this be the ideal version of Eclipse to install?

11:22 PM
@Jamal I don't know the book so I don't know how much you can use it. But I'm sure that you will manage. And whenever you need any help you can always try StackOverflow I'm just a ping away!
@Jamal That one will do just fine :)

@SimonAndréForsberg Alright! I'll just start with a Hello World for myself, but I don't think I should post that for review (unless you think I should).

You can always switch later if you want to switch Eclipse version. I have about 3 different Eclipse versions "installed" on my computer. :) "Installing" Eclipse is probably one of the easiest installations ever.
@Jamal You can post it for chat-view, that should be enough :)

Better yet, I can just post it on Ideone.
Would I still need to install JDK with that version of Eclipse?

@Jamal I don't know. Can't remember. Been so long since I installed JDK :)
Eclipse will probably auto-detect JDK if it is available, and if it isn't, it will break into pieces fail reset your CR reputation probably let you know.

Hey all.
Jamal, I'm happy to walk you through things as well.

11:34 PM
(yes, I've "cheated" with Ideone's included stuff)

Post it for review, I'll upvote the question ;-)

@Jamal OMG! The horror! Please post that for review!

Now, that is JAVA code for sure ;-) ;-)

There are actually five freakin' things to be said about that code!!!

I was going to say 3 .... because the public class is an ideone thing/

11:36 PM
I can only see 3

Four then. Although one is very very minor :)

I guess I might as well. :-P It does work (duh), and since I hardly know how it works, it's truly JAVA material.

what's your 5? I'll write mine in .... and you write your's in, and then we can post thema ll at the same time ;-)

not enough factory methods in there
since it's java and all

no Linked lists, and no singletons.
My list of 3: brace @EOL, exception on main, and unused imports?
Jamal, for the record, it's all good, right?

11:39 PM
I have discovered that I don't need any of the imports, even for println(). Should I post what I have anyway?

1. Don't declare `throws Exception` unless you have to.
2. Don't use import java.xxxx.*; Only import the things you need, in this case: None.
3. In Java, braces goes at the same line and not on their own lines.
4. `class HelloWorld` should be `public class HelloWorld`
5. [tag:minor-stylistic-thing] Don't use a space between `main` and `(` (very very minor)
If you do, I will copy-paste that ^^

So, now that there are no remaining unanswered Objective-C questions, I'm going to slowly go through the ones with a single answer make sure that single answer is accurate and good. If not, I'll post a new answer. For example: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/32405/…

I've never heard of 3 outside of coding style

@nhgrif Good work.

In Objective-C, opening braces should never be on their own line either.

11:42 PM
@Jamal Have you managed to get it working in Eclipse?

Although in this case, for me, it's actually a LOT more about the fact that virtually all Objective-C programming is done with Xcode, and if you collapse code in which opening braces are on their own lines, it looks ridiculous and takes up an extra line.

@Jamal I'm not sure if you really should post the question though, I mean... where are we with "example code" really?

@Jamal, there are two schools of thought, one says that new-to-java folk should edit things in vi and compile from the commandline. The other says they should use eclipse/intellij/netbeans, learn the IDE, and so on.that
I subscribe to the latter school ;-)

As much as I like Vim, I don't think I'd ever suggest anyone write Java with it

Yes. IDE first, command-line later!

11:43 PM
I used to.

I'm sure someone's come up with a vim plug-in for Eclipse

Those were the days.

then you get the best of both

There is a vim plugin

@DanLyons I think every ide has a vim plugin

11:44 PM
This question is technically unanswered by the way, since the answer has no upvotes, hint hint... codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/56680/…

I see what you did there

@SimonAndréForsberg I'm doing something else, actually. It might still not be example code since it's something I'm working on. If I were to create an actual useful program, it would take more time.

Jamal, there are some nice-to-know things about eclipse that new people should not have to learn the hard way.
Getting it set up right the first time helps.

Is there a Code Review meta post which clearly defines what does and doesn't count as example code?

@Jamal Great. Well, I'll leave you in the monkeys hands in case you have any problems :) TTGTB here.

11:47 PM
@Simon, vote! (@190) ;-)

What if I'm writing code as an example for myself on how to do something? Is this eligible for a CodeReview post?

@SimonAndréForsberg I'll post my basic code here, then. I don't want to risk a post of mine getting closed.

nhgrif - it is a grey area. Personally I like it having some fuzziness!

@nhgrif Not really. But that is why I started this one: meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/1981/…

For example, this question contains example code in that the code didn't currently exist in any "real" projects. I started an example project to attempt implementing this with the intent of potentially using it "for real" later.

Actually, I'm just going to do FizzBuzz to start.

Do you have eclipse installed?

@rolfl Voted! Now you vote! (@65... hmm... nevermind...)

@SimonAndréForsberg - you will have to answr some more things ... ;-)

for every prototype that gets thrown away, there are probably at least two which become critical production components :|

Santa! .... Thanks.

I swear there's a correlation between "JAVA" and bad questions. Where the hell did "JAVA" come from anyway? Drives me insane.

Congratulations on finding a case-sensitive search

@rolfl Oh, right... well. Only 3 more answers for a golden Java badge!

meskaruneI am pretty new to javascript, and put together a weather application. I'd like to get some feedback on improvements I could make to the code itself and also possible ways to speed up weather data display. This is a screenshot of the working site: The basics for how the application works: fir...

Speaking of TTGTB.... I'm out!

Alright! Just made my first real Python review! :D

Ahh, trhanks for rep-max, I was 'peeved' that I missed it by 5 a couple of days ago ;-)
Night Simon

Hmm. Just now finally noticed a problem with codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/56162/… Although, I'm kind of thinking I might have been better posting what I warned against in the bottom of that question as a question and posting the code in my question as the answer...
Would it be too disingenuous if I went ahead and did that in a new question?
