in cs
There's... a IV? D:
it was working completely fine until I added the parts that consider all possible orientations of the boxes
O man, It would be a dream to study CS since grade 9 ...
yes, it was great
@Jamal here ? yes
02:01
I had no CS in high school. I started it shortly after, my first language being JS.
and I have only had cool teachers for it so it has always been my favourite course

Q: Is my code overdesigned? Does it rely too heavily on interfaces?

Kyle BaranContext: I am using XNA to create a simple game / learning project. Problem: I have three interfaces, each with a different purpose in mind. However, the way I use them, as well as their implementations, makes me feel as if my code is overdesigned and poorly thought out, so I am looking for be...

@DatLumberZach here you cant choose what to study...
@CaptainObvious ok I'm in
here you can choose most, but stuff like Math and English you automatically have and have to plan your semester around
can someone else pls check my code for errors the else statement being added didnt do anything
02:05
@DatLumberZach your code is too complicated I think
considering how I started JS at the beginning of the semester I highly doubt that xD
You just have to calculate the volume of the truck, and divide by the volume of the box...
I have that already
that is in the main finished version
Man ...
hahaha
That's a lot of variables for doing it ...
this is my test version where I am taking into account the bin packing problem
02:07
Can a variable be greater than an array ?
In the bin packing problem, objects of different volumes must be packed into a finite number of bins or containers each of volume V in a way that minimizes the number of bins used. In computational complexity theory, it is a combinatorial NP-hard problem. There are many variations of this problem, such as 2D packing, linear packing, packing by weight, packing by cost, and so on. They have many applications, such as filling up containers, loading trucks with weight capacity constraints, creating file backups in media and technology mapping in Field-programmable gate array semiconductor ch...
an array isnt one variable, it is multiple being grouped
NP-hard.. isn't that the million-dollar impossible thing?
I simplified it, and I dont think so it isnt that hard to solve lots of ppl have
considering how the equation is on the wikipedia page xD
I don't JS but in most languages a variable cannot be greater than a whole array of variables right ?
know
this checks the value of the one variable to the values of all of the variables in the array individually
02:11
Hm right
but again it could be a wacky error since I am still learning the language
Actually I can't get the bin problem
yeah
What language where you learning before JS ?
this is bothering me though since I can't see the problem
I learned HTML
Programming language ... hehe
02:13
all I know is JS, HTML CSS and I know how to incorporate SVG stuff
Oh right
propably learning python will be good for you
I have only been learning CS for about 3 years now though
I'm learning PHP before JS
we did python in my g10 class before HTML
I don't consider it a language I know though since I didnt continue studying it after the semester

Hey python is a very nice language
its very fun to program in python
cause its simple
everybody has their favourite languages :)
mine is JS

yes, most likely a mix of HTML, CSS snd SVG to display the puzzle and JS
I will probably write my own

haha fuck the weekend
why lie ? all i want is code
aha why wait for the weekend when you have over-complicated ideas now? xD

as have I

I'm still taking my sweet time on a Bejeweled game.
that wouldn't be hard with JS

styling is for designers

programmers should give life to designer's job
Even when I get it working, I'm sure it'll suck. But that's what CR is for.
02:36
One of the great paradoxes of computer programs .....
with proper HTML, CSS and SVG you can make anything
They have to look good, and they have to work well.
Typically, the person who can do one of those, cannot do the other.

thats why designers exist

04:15
I don't understand the principles behind object-based programming, does anyone know where I could find an explanation of the over-arching principles? Stuff like PHP, JS, C#, etc. I'm used to database stuff and I find those difficult to grasp...
@Phrancis You can actually do object based programming in most of the high end databases.
@Donald.McLean but how is that defined?
An object is a unit consisting of properties and methods bound together. The idea is that the state (represented by the properties) is only supposed to be manipulated by sending the object messages (aka method/function calls).
An object oriented application consists of some high level glue code that sets everything up, and then the application objects spend their lives responding to messages/events from the user and/or environment.
Would that be sort of like a SQL procedure or function? Where it responds to input parameters to aggregate the output...
So say you have a table, and a bunch of SQL procedures and the user can't do anything to the rows of the table directly, but can only access them using the SQL procedures.
04:26
Right
At that point, the table is very much like a "class", and the rows are very much like "objects" (aka instances of the class).
The SQL procedures are "member functions" or "message handlers". Object oriented theory has been written about by many people, so there are many terms that have similar meanings.
Hmm interesting
So if you were to shoehorn this in a SQL setting, what would an "object" be?
In an SQL setting, an "object" would be one row of a table.
You said that already, my bad. Just trying to conceptualize this and having a hard time lol. I appreciate your time
No worries, I have considered becoming a college professor teaching CS courses.
And on several occasions I have taught courses for users of systems I have worked on.
I've been a professional software developer for 26 years now.
04:35
Impressive!
I've used three different OO languages: C++, Java, and Scala, over the past 20 years.
It's been a very long time since I used C++ though, and even my Java is getting rusty.
Are OO languages used primarily to create a bridge between the user and the system, or is that a misconception on my part? (it likely is)
OO languages are used because classes and objects in software have a high correspondence to real things in the problem domain of the users that you're writing the software for.
4
My 200th answer posted (unless the 7 deleted ones don't count).
So in a web application, HTML requests that need to be processed are represented by HTML Request objects.
In a desktop GUI application, the UI components - buttons, windows, etc, are represented by UI component objects.
In an accounting program, things that are relevant like accounts and transactions are represented by account and transaction objects.
04:43
Ah it's starting to make a little sense
So for example, if you have a "point" object with an X and Y value as part of it's state, you send the point object a "move" message (or call the move object method), passing how much you want the point to move and the code for the point class knows how to update the state of the point object that you want to move so that it's state tells it that it's in a different place.
An object is sort of like a teenager that has his own bedroom. You can tell him to clean it and maybe he will, but going in and cleaning it for him is generally a really bad idea.
4
That's one of the main points behind using objects - you're supposed to go through their "interface" - the list of messages/member functions that they respond to. This makes it possible for the objects to prevent their state from being messed up by code that doesn't follow the rules.
Ah ok
Questions?
05:05
Lots but I'll give this some thought
@Phrancis Sure. Feel free to ping me if you wish.
What would be a good object-oriented language to look into to understand the principles better? A friend of mine who is a really good SQL Dev is getting into C# now, part of the reason why I was curious, plus it seems a lot of the CR posts are OO type language.
05:46
@Phrancis Picking a programming language is sort of like picking an ice cream flavor - everybody has their own opinion and they're all correct. My favorite language is Scala - it has all of the advantages of Java and fewer of the disadvantages. But, that's just my personal opinion. For what I do, I would never use anything except Java or Scala.

08:22
@Nobody I like to take pictures of details.
@Vogel612: I think these blocks of binary data generation should be encapsulated in some protocol class
@Morwenn: Which details in this case? The wrinkles on the cloths?
Nope, just a unusual view on my own body. It's boring to always have pictures with the face.
@Morwenn Also doing great, busy mornings as usual
Well... not as usual, but I had some leftover work from yesterday, need to figure out on whom to vote for the EU and got a whole bunch of emails
Yaay, good news!
"Of course! I don't see a reason why it should not be Java 6 compatible."
08:25
@Nobody probably, yes. But I don't have that much free time on my hands right now, so I went for these 3 things as they were coming right after ;)
That's about a set of libraries on which a future project of me will depend, due to it being also anticipated for Android I need to set back compatability to Java 6 :(
@skiwi do you have much of a choice for your vote?
@Nobody I've got a whole array of choices... Just need to figure out which party is being moderatore about the EU, I hate all those that scream Quit the EU, blablabla, consequences don't matter!, I also disliek the ones that are for 100% cooperation and rather would have all borders be gone
so there are some moderates left? ^^
@skiwi the problem is, there only seems to be these two, right?
Here in Germany there's so many totally retarded parties for European elections...
exhibit 1: MLPD - Marxistic Leninistic Party for Germany
exhibit 2: AfD - Alternative for Germany
08:31
I'll go check it out in a bit :p
exhibit 3: NPD - National(socialistic) Party for Germany <-- these are the barely legal nazis
exhibit 4: Die Partei - the party <-- purely comedic party with no real targets other than making fun of all other parties
exhibit 5: REP - The small brother of NPD
I don't even get the parties that are against the EU, I mean if you vote on them, they get seats(?) in the parliament, but what are they gonna do? Vote against every bill?
hm "Die Violetten" don't candidate this time :)
@skiwi: Don't underestimate that. Hitler's NSDAP wanted to abolish democracy and got elected ...
There are some parties that are like: "no more Shengen, back to national moneys, to strong frontiers and no more immigration (almost)"...
08:35
So if anti-EU parties get over 50% then the EU is over with?
and Godwin's law striked again :)
quick question: Can I flag one of my own comments for moderator attention (SO unfortunately) to get a typo fixed which is quite important and could throw off future readers (but so far has not done so)?
In France, more than 70% said they wouldn't vote. It's almost making me sick.
who said that?
Those are the results from surveys.
08:38
don't believe statistics that you did not fake yourself

these become selffulfilling prophecies
Erm... How do I even figure out on whom to vote (the parties, their views)... Maybe we've got some folder at home.

in germany there is the wahl-o-mat where you fill out some questions and the site gives you the ranking of how close the parties' programs get to your answers
@Nobody I got 65% CDU T.T
CDU - Christian Democratic Union
08:41
yeah thats the problem with the wahl-o-mat it does not measure what the parties are really doing but only what they say they do
@Vogel612 I'm not sure if you understood my quick question there... I basically want to fix a typo in one of my coments after the grace period is over
Or you can vote for parties with specific ideas, such as the femenists or the ecologists.
I don't like those sites that choose for me though
naturally the populistic parties (like NPD) gain much there because they state many goals that you would not dislike (lowering taxes, improving local economy ...)
well the Greens have no clue, SPD is being unreasonable about taxes and CDU is too passive IMO... But everything else is even worse..
08:42
I'm good at multitasking though, I asked my mother to search it for me.
@skiwi well there is a fix for flagging comments, that you upvoted...
maybe that also helps with flagging your own comments..
@Vogel612: IMHO those three parties have become one (at least with regards to policy when they are ruling parties)
@Nobody somewhat..
the SPD (Social Party of Germany) are trying to move more to the left wing lately because of that..
unfortunately those three parties together account for about 3/4 of all voters
08:44
and that even though the Greens are hanging around there, too...
@Vogel612 Ah it's about one of my own though, so can't do anything about it. Decided to custom flag the answer with appropiate explanation
that should work too ;)
The thing about the elections site is that they show the parties in the EU parliamant, while we have to vote for aour local parties and they probably join in one of those superparties or whatever
@skiwi I believe having read that as advice on MSO
@skiwi That's true :/
08:49
I've made my choice. Appereantly we have three decently big moderate parties, two of them are in the current government (which is not too good) and one of them has the best points but it's probably bull hence I don't trust them.
"Yes to France, no to Bruxelles!" -> never gonna vote for that...
Voting in Belgium must be fun... "Yes to Bruxelles, no to Bruxelles!"
the eu will drive all of those into schizophrenia ^^
no wonder they are upset
Voting in Germany will be fun too...
08:52
We can vote for Esperanto too.
@Vogel612: Did you notice the CDU's advertisement for the EU with just a big picture of Angela Merkel (who will not be in this parliament)?
"Let's get rid of the government" -> yet another one I'm not gonna vote for.
alternative 1: We say we like Europe, but we're gonna be pussies about it
alternative 2: We say we like Europe and we're gonna go HAM about it, but our economists are total retards (see eurobonds)
alternative 3: Some Radical anti-european party, that is just nazis in a bad disguise
alternative 4: Some Radical anti-european party, that is just communists. undisguised.
2
@Nobody nope... Where I live, the communal voting is much more present on the election advertisements.
here too, it is really hard to tell which of the posters are which election
and Merkel would candidate in neither one around here
additional points to SPD for actually putting up the only German MEP that regularly appears in the news on the advertisements.
08:58
@Vogel612 alternative 5: you vote for a party that has a specific goal that you like and no general politic ambitions. You can almost be sure that such a party will strive to reach its goal.
Seems I spotted some trend on SO, if question is vote to closed as too broad, immediate suggestion to ask it on programmers.SE...
@Morwenn such a Party does not exist in Germany...
@Vogel612 That's strange, I can vote at least 3 or 4 of them where I live.
I got to go
see you all
@Nobody cya
08:59
cu later @Nobody
@Morwenn maybe I should change countries then... Even though I don't like France (no offense)
Huh... how is this comment from yesterday evening supposed to help me today? "//TODO test FusionCard and more" (It is not about testing FusionCard btw)
Such parties generally don't present themselves to national elections, but they know that the European elections is what they should aim for :p
@Vogel612 Don't worry. There are also many things I dislike in France. Fortunately, there ar ealso things I do like.
I need to get this post reviewed, might make a post about it later today:
public MonsterCard fuseWith(final MonsterCard fuserMonsterCard, final FusionCard fusionCard) {
    Objects.requireNonNull(fuserMonsterCard);
    Objects.requireNonNull(fusionCard);
    MonsterCardBuilder builder = fusionCard.getFusionStat().createBuilder(this, fuserMonsterCard, fusionCard)
            .name(getName() + " " + fuserMonsterCard.getName());
    return builder.build();
}
With all dependent classes, surely will make an interesting review.
@skiwi wat.... This looks so broken to me..
09:02
return fusionCard.getFusionStat().createBuilder(this, fuserMonsterCard, fusionCard)
        .name(getName() + " " + fuserMonsterCard.getName())
        .build();
There was no need to store it there
It's actually a very smart way of doing things! If others agree.
I'd probably rather do:
return MonsterCardFuser.fuse(this, fuserMonsterCard, [fusionCard]);
Might also be wortht o explore that path
I'm trying to figure out why I have an equals method, when I can have two identical cards in the deck
But it's somewhat of an edged blade
you could have the (Monster)Card constructor generate some @UniqueIdentifier (that's J2E though..)
Sounds complicated... but may be neccessary
In other news, the annoying ad when starting up firefox (which come from some website), didn't start today I just realised!

it was directed at that "100 factor too big" thingy..
I'm working with ints though for convienience, but shouldn't forget to also divide by 100 then obviously
the cool thing is, if i % 10 == 0, then i * 1.x will always yield an integer..

    monsterCard.fuseWith(monsterCard, fusionCard);

@Morwenn I just overrode your edit-rejection by improving the edit. I just reverted the change he did to the code.
@Vogel612 They still introduced a punctuation error and a not-so-correct interrogative sentence :p
Since the edit was kind of minor and slightly modified the code, I considered that several small mistakes in a small edit were too much :/
As there is no auto-CW anymore I think we can afford approving / improving such edits ;)
Do I need unit tests to ensure that monster names don't change when they perform attacks?
Also, wtf? Question closed and not a single comment until the last voter (aka me...)
@skiwi wat?

damnit, I did all my asserts the wrong way around (expected <=> actual)
you test that the attack method does what she should do. If that includes not changing the name of the monster, then you should have that in your //then

Oh, ok.
@Phrancis Personally I found Scala very hard to learn. I'd recommend Java. And honestly, C# isn't that bad either.
@Morwenn Schengen FTW!

@SimonAndréForsberg I totally second that ^^

(Time to go to university)
@SimonAndréForsberg But Java is better!
Today: some guy on the C++ proposals mailing list proposed to introduce the keyword cauto to shorten the code that uses const auto.
That's as if somebody proposed to add pusfinal to Java to shorten the code that uses`pubic static final`.

Q: What is my (thinking) error with importing a file?

Mathias711I am programming something to look in correlation between location and speed. For that I am importing a text file with on each line the position in x,y,z and the speed vx,vy,vz. The first three lines is general stuff, and does not need to be imported. A month ago I naively imported all the lines...
