Q: Testing Promises vs Lock performance

czajahI'm not sure if my lock usage is correct and safe. I wanted to know what will be best approach to deal with situation when one thread have to wait for being initialized by another so I written this test: import java.util.concurrent.locks.ReentrantLock import java.util.{TimerTask, Timer, Date} im...

11:21
@Morwenn psfb isAlive;
11:34
@skiwi is p private, public or protected?
Besides, it should be psfb ALIVE = true;
Too lazy to even do #define cauto const auto, I guess.
@200_success Huh, I didn't even thought about that. Thinking about it, I guess that would work too yeah, thanks to the pre-compiler
@200_success Not at all, it was one of their suggested implementations of the feature.
#include <iamlazy.h>
2
Oh, it seems that the next C standard should include 25 new math functions for floating point numbers.
11:40
Howdy, Badass Cowboy!
And the equivalents for float, long double, decimal32, decimal64 and decimal128.
And combinations of these types if there are several parameters.
@200_success That's too long to write, I'd like to have #iial for that!
@SimonAndréForsberg Sorry, you can't write alias for preprocessor directives.
@Morwenn I know :)
Some compilers allowed it back in time. Many old IOCCC entries rely on that.
11:44
monking
@SimonAndréForsberg It's a private static final boolean
@BenVlodgi Hi :)
wassup @Morwenn
It should be obvious... right, Right?!
@BenVlodgi Nothing new. I updated one of my libraries yesterday (those are terribly exciting news, right?).
11:47
@Morwenn We should have a bot that automatically updates on every commit to one of our github repos
@Morwenn the most exciting, which libs?
@skiwi That would be horrible.

Q: what to name a class that serialize and de-serialize both

MohdAdnanIn my project, I am creating a class that will perform serialization and deserialization both. what to name that class. Till now the class name is Serializer but this calls deserialize both. For examle serialize.deserilize(..) seems so odd. I also go through and found there is a term SerDes SerD...

@BenVlodgi A library to do mathematics at compile time.
ohhh, that atually sounds pretty useful
11:48
Hmm great, I just realised that monsters not in offensive modus can't attack
Probably, but I don't know what it could be used for.
At first, I intended to remove it, but then I saw that my Github repo was the fourth entry on Google when I typed "C++ constexpr math".
4
12:02
@skiwi yeah, I understood static final boolean. I don't think it should be static though, alive sounds like it should be non-static.
 public class Immortal { psfb alive = true; }
@SimonAndréForsberg That's to add to the confusion
class Example {
     public static final boolean alive = true;
     private final boolean living = false;
     public boolean isAlive () {
           return living;
     }
}
@skiwi just to make it perfect ;)

Vogel612, I saw so many classes but they usually have two implementations. I do not find a suitable example. — MohdAdnan 2 mins ago
I think I opened the box of pandora there...
Why does if (this != null) not throw a compiler error?
12:18
This site isn't about example code - it's about your code ;) — Mat's Mug 6 secs ago
@skiwi because it is syntactically valid?
Ding dong, it's a Christmas song.
Monking all!
@Mat'sMug I think that's beside the point for poor OP
Monking @rolfl
@Vogel612 oh well
hey @rolfl
12:20
Monking @rolfl, and you were already awake! I saw you working :p
@Vogel612 Then at least it should throw a warning imo
Yup.
Now I have driven in to work too.
Going to superping that conversation out-of-comments and in to here....
Aah, that's quite useful to not forget.

@mohdadnan - let's cover the on-topic discussion for Code Review in Code Review chat.
12:22
@Mat'sMug Good answers need time to get recognized.
2
@Vogel612 you are the Man. Thank you so much for your help. Still I am looking for a person who really understand the advantages of better naming in software. — MohdAdnan 3 mins ago
I am not sure whether he is being sarcastic or not....
I like Serializer. I'd name deSerialize, deserialize though, and serializeData would be serializedData.. and obj is a poor name for anything, and if I see a class named MyObject in my project I rename it without even thinking. You've come to the right place to address naming issues, it's just that we require your actual code in the question ;) — Mat's Mug 25 secs ago
OP has edited their post and added some "code". Should we reopen? I think it's too narrowed-down to naming, but I've seen that not being an issue in other cases.
@rolfl did the super-ping message include a link to here?
(meeting, later!)
@Vogel612 I'm wondering aswell
Well my advice was the honest thing I'd probably do in such a case. Trust my guts ;)
@Mat'sMug Sounds like you were abruptly taken away there.
I rather trust my nuts.
12:30
@Mat'sMug It does......
And.............I'm back. Good morning all.
Morning.
He seems to have begun editing the code... Currently I'd opt to leave closed, but if he adds the (full) implementation, I would reopen ;)
I don't look at the chat for half an hour, and more Canadians are awake! Monking @Mat'sMug and @rolfl
I'm glad I didn't make all these tests yesterday evening, it's taking me 3 hours already...
Morning @Donald.McLean
@SimonAndréForsberg You never turn away from the chat. Not once.
YOTO.
@SimonAndréForsberg Well, it is 0838 here on the Atlantic coast (aka EDT, I'm not sure what they call it in Canada).
12:39
@MohdAdnan I am sorry, but I (and probably many others) don't consider method-headers something else than pseudo code. I would like to draw your attention to our help center at this point. There you can find further information on what kind of questions you should ask here. If you have questions, feel free to visit us in Code Review Chat or ask on Code Review MetaVogel612 8 secs ago
We call it the Atlantic coast as well.
yes now on chat.
Vogel612
Hi.... when a moderator pings you .... you should probably pay attention.
Vogel is moderator?
No, I am.
12:43
or you ? :)
okk.
yes.. telll me what I did so wrong here?
Let's all take a breath, and get perspective here.
(count to ten, etc.).
Code Review is for reviewing real, working code, and making it better.... improving it.
Things get really fuzzy when the code does not work the way it is designed, or inteded to work.
The fuzzyness is not because we don't want to help, but because there are rules that extend beyond just Code Review.
If code does not work, or has bugs, then you should formulate your question to be on Stack Overflow.
If you are trying to design the code right, then you should be on Programmers.
If we blur those lines, then the whole SE system starts to become confusing.
ok. so u mean this question make sense on Programmers?
In this case, your question is not suited to Code Review, because it would be better, of posed properly, on Programmers.
It is hard to work in these grey areas....
so, we have these rules which make it clear..... but, they may come accross as unfriendly at times.
12:47
okk.
got it
Thank you so much for your help
4
Unfortunately ....
programmers does not like naming-questions.
?
:) ok
You have hit a tough one....
There';s a saying....
Naming things and CacheInvalidation are the hardest thing a programmer does.
Naming things is primarily opinion based, and is not suited to a Q&A style system like Stack Exchange.
@MohdAdnan I suggest, you paste your entire implementation of the serialization deserialization. Then post that and ask for a REVIEW on your code, and specifically your naming conventions
6
^^ What Ben said
12:49
You will find that, once you have decided your naming convention, that Code Review can help with the review process to make sure it is implemented well.....
You can never name your variables correct, however you can always name them wrong.
3
^^ What simon said
Oh right, I got a naming question closed on Programmers...
^^ What skiwi said
2
what simon says
12:50
^^ What Ben says
I think we are overwhelming him just a tiny little bit
Anyway, @MohdAdnan - I'm going to delete your question, it does not make sense on Code Review in it's current format...... and naming questions would never make sense on here.
ok
go ahead
Have a look at the more general Stack Exchange system, and you will find that there are gaps in what is on topic in various places.
This is one of them.
Sorry .... :(
But, when it is all there, and working .... we'd love to tell you just how it could have been done better!

@MohdAdnan I suspect you will be downvoted and closed..
@MohdAdnan what language is this code?
java.
If I remember correctly Programmers just accept questions that are "of Interest to every programmer"...
12:53
my God. Ok. my Bad I should not have used this plateform to ask any such questions.
Mr. Moderator plz remove that question too then
@Vogel612 It's already a meme?
@MohdAdnan

@SimonAndréForsberg I'd expect it is, yes...
so I put the actual code
@MohdAdnan with the java naming convention you should call them

deserialize
serialize
12:55
i just dint put the implementation of the method that I think is irrelevant
but is that make sense. Serializer has deserialize method?
3 minutes, 1 downvote, 1 star.
Alright, I am in a meeting for the next hour or so .... behave yourselves.
@MohdAdnan No code is irrelevant on Code Review.
(Or is it?)
Also, @MohdAdnan - I am not a moderator on Programmers, but you can delete your own question there.
Pseudo code would be irrelevant ;)
12:56
ok
@rolfl I was referring to the time zone.
^^ What konijn said
@Donald.McLean I know, I was being .... pedantic. and we have EST/EDT as well.
@BenVlodgi You really shouldn't post CR answers on Programmers...

A: People looking for help?

Vogel612As you are talking about enforcing the intention of this SE-Site. That's what we as Users do everyday, we comment, vote up, down, close and reopen questions, we edit, we chat, we ask, we answer, we are Code Review And by doing so, everyday, we enforce the intention of what we see as Code Review

I just got massive shit for putting a piece of "UAT-tested-and-passed" code in production. Go figure.
13:17
Traffic-wise, we're currently the first beta site of the network.
UAT?
I could actually say that saying "that you are working on" also implicitly implies not working code. However I doubt that the ad itself changed the mentality. — skiwi 23 secs ago
User-Acceptance Testing
We're also the first beta site when it comes to the number of questions and to the number of answers.
@Mat'sMug What was wrong with it then?
13:18
@skiwi It probably didn't work...
And the beta site with the most users.
there's a bunch of bugs, the thing was "quick-stamped-as-tested"
We're also the first beta site when you calculate the awesomeness of all people combined.
4
@skiwi well... beta-site...
personally I think the awesomeness of the top 0.0001% of SO is just marginally ahead...
@Vogel612 Nobody can deny the awesomeness of Jon Skeet.

Except for bruce schneier, maybe
Does the need to individually test every enum instance look like a code smell?
enum instance looks like a code-smell..
Enum instances are just the instances of an enum, even though they're compile time.
Perhaps enum constants is a better name?
I found a Question with an answer from @SimonAndréForsberg and @Mat'sMug I upvoted Simon's answer and thought to myself that I didn't want to pick sides in the battle going on there so I upvoted Mat's answer on Principle.

Shame on you @Malachi we upvote posts, not people ;)

@Vogel612 I upvoted the post, because of the quality of the person's answers
Hopefully I've got these tests finished by dinner, taking into account that I also need to travel home.

It features rapping by Southern hip hop group UGK as well as production by Timbaland. The song by Jay-Z was based loosely around Tha Dogg Pound's major hit Big Pimpin', which was released in 1997. Obfuscation, here we go:
private void init30() {
    Number number = Number.ONE.ONE.ONE;
}

private static enum Number {
    ONE, TWO;
}
I love coding and debugging
@Mat'sMug I hear that. I had an accepted answer like 2 weeks ago, then someone (200_success I think) stole it away from me.
@skiwi I also realized recently that it's possible to write Number.ONE.ONE.ONE !
You get a warning of course, but it compiles :)
@skiwi Well, I have to get these things finished some time, don't I?
Although, given the plans I have for this code, I doubt it will ever be truly finished.
@SimonAndréForsberg sounds like Job Security to me....

@Malachi Well, I don't really have a job at the moment.
@SimonAndréForsberg www.freelancer.com
@SimonAndréForsberg or www.odesk.com
I like Freelancer a lot better, that is where I started going to look for side jobs
there are a lot of companies on there looking for permanent hires though too.
@SimonAndréForsberg Sometime woudl be useful, seems I can't even get a working version before dinner

Q: Improve this embeding of size in Stream

ZerowalkerI am embedding my size in a Stream in the first 4 byte. When I think about it, it should be possible to do it better, but that depends. Here is how I currently do it: bsize = ms.Length; tcp.GetStream().Write(BitConverter.GetBytes(bsize), 0, intsize); tcp.GetStream().Write(ms.GetBuffer(), 0, (i...
