TIME!
"only" 185 reputation yesterday

Oh well, rep isn't everything :)
Yeah, that's probably it

You do the honors?

@Malachi just (re?)tagged it

@SimonAndréForsberg sorry I saw it in the chat log and did about 10 seconds worth of research and found the tag on stackOverflow and imitated it
Dinner time

12:04 AM
@Malachi No problem, I'm glad someone tagged it :)
At least @Jamal isn't the one doing all the edits ;)

Nor should I be.

You've earned the "Enthusiast" badge. See your profile.
Dinner done.

Dinner? At 1:20 am? You are strange people, @rolfl
Here it will be some sandwiches, and episode of some tv-series, and goodnight.

@SimonAndréForsberg at 01:20 I'm often just hitting my groove.
coding like a maniac.
Then I spend the next day cleaning the mess.

12:19 AM
Please. I've done dinner at 3:00 AM before.

I'm usually more productive during daytime :)
@Jamal OK then, perhaps it is not that strange after all
Goodnight (or evening) anyways

Sweet dreams.

12:36 AM
I think I am close to more edits than @Jamal, at least I was for this week, @SimonAndréForsberg
@Jamal is trailing me by 2 edits right now

@SimonAndréForsberg: By the way, you were right about i*i being slower than std::sqrt() (in my self-answer). My time test confirms this as well. I'm updating my answer accordingly. Thanks for pointing it out!

@Jamal - hope there's a typo in there.

In that message?

i*i is not the same as std::sqrt()

@rolfl: I know, but I wasn't sure how to word that. Anyway, I'm removing the i*i entirely.

12:43 AM
Ahh, checked the answer, context makes it make sense now.

@rolfl: Yeah, shows what I know. It does make sense that sqrt cannot be slower than a large number of i*i. I've tested this with the largest number I could, and the latter is slower by about 10 seconds.
The input number was 10000000000000000000.

What is 10 seconds as ratio of the overall execution time ? 1%, 10%, more?

@rolfl: About 10%, I believe.

12:59 AM
@rolfl: Answer updated.

mission status updated | I think round 6 will be the last one I'll be monitoring the figures. We're slowing down, I think the "kick in the butt" effect is dissipating.

Weren't we the only ones tackling the unanswered questions anyway?

@retailcoder - I think the zombies are more resilient than before, not that people are not trying harder.
I am looking at about 2 zombies a day (no answers - I have not done the 'vote' thing).
what I mean is that I am trying to answer two 'good' zombies a day, and I am not doing the find un-voted-but-answered
The good zombis in are getting harder to find (though I have not even looked at them all yet).

@rolfl it's ok, I got that covered :)

I figured that was the case.
I think the next thing for me to do is two-fold - be more aggressive with close(), and drop comments and 'bump' askers to answer their own questions.
I think the bump strategy could solve a few of them.
Then I think I may tackle some of the more exotic tags (if COBOL was not exotic enough).
After that I will tackle the close review queue on SO.

Just got downvoted by a user that I respect very much. I said I'd humbly take the hit, but then I turn around and accept an answer on one of my questions just because I liked the number "1750". Am I a jackass?

1:16 AM
why does that comment and question have to be related?

Well I said I'd take the hit.. and I remain at the rep score I had before I got -2'd
(technically I did take the hit though)
I need to go on a downvote spree anyway, @Jamal at what point does the system say "Dude, there's an upvote button, too"?

@retailcoder - no, you miss my point.... what I mean is why does you being a jackass have anything to do with taking a downvote ;-) ?

If I downvote an answer, my rep will be an even number. Must... resist... urge...

lol
go ahead and downvote along: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/36245/23788 - I'd rather go on a downvote spree without a rep score as nice as 1750 :)

@retailcoder well, I posted an answer to SO I knew would be hammered, what I did not expect was an upvote before the delete.... (sorry mods, I was a bad boy.... :( )
Maybe that link will work.... not sure

(retailcoder wants dat Peer Pressure badge)

@rolfl links to the question - I guess it links to your deleted post if you've got 10K on SO
@Jamal oddly it hadn't occurred to me.. but now that you mention it...

I still don't know why that and Disciplined are considered Moderation badges.

@Jamal because they involve deleting a post?

@retailcoder: I suppose so.

Ok decision taken, I'm deleting that bad answer.
(too bad for [badge:peer-pressure])
And now I need to downvote at least two posts (1742 is just... you know)

well maybe we should synonymize????

No need. Just let it burn. Plus, Cryptography SE would incorporate many related questions anyway.
Hm... I can delete a post along with its suggested edit. I wonder how this works with wikis.

I guess synonymization is appropriate

1:56 AM
It would primarily be needed if that tag already had many questions.

this tag looked inaccurate so I retagged the only question that had this tag. codereview.stackexchange.com/tags/asp.net-webapi/info

So, what's the consensus? I can drop the encryption suggestions if needed.

@Malachi I don't get the "Web API" part

And I'll skip the rest so that others can review.

I don't care about the Encryption tag as long as it is covered. but it will probably show back up again @Jamal

I'm with @Malachi on this

here is the question that was tagged with that asp.net-webapi tag

@Jamal actually flagged the answer there as not an answer - it's a comment.

@Malachi: So, this answer doesn't address optimization at all?

@Jamal you mean @retailcoder huh? It does, but I find it could be elaborated a bit. If it's worthy of an upvote, by all means upvote it (it's a valid target) - imho should be a comment though.

@retailcoder: Oh, right. My mistake.
@retailcoder: Okay, I'll convert it.

@rolfl It is not easy to review its own code and being objective :) but I going to try tonight

@Foobar you are right, but, for the record, learning to review your own code is a great skill to have... It takes a very analytical mind to be objective, and if you find something you think is wrong you will learn the lesson really, really well.

1:39 PM
@rolfl If throwing is what adds complexity, then why does the metric for this code say `2` in computational complexity?

public static void main(String[] args) {
try {
thro();
thro();
thro();
thro();
thro();
thro();
thro();
}
catch (NullPointerException e) {

}
}

public static void thro() throws NullPointerException {
throw new NullPointerException();
}

@SimonAndréForsberg - from wiki: It directly measures the number of linearly independent paths through a program's source code. There are multiple independant paths through that code, so, if you have a complexity of 2, then that is not the Cyclotronic Complexity you are measuring.

@rolfl Cyclotronic? I'm talking Cyclomatic. It's said it's "McCabe Cyclomatic Complexity". I guess it's different things.

Typo, brain fart, I meant cyclomatic as well.
That method has a complexity of 3.
and only 1 of the paths is tested.
Whuch is why (when you count the fact that an instance of the class is never created, only 1 of the complexity paths of the 4 paths in th class are tested.

@rolfl If counting using your method, I think the cyclomatic complexity of the OP's code would be a lot bigger than 15, but yet he says his current complexity is 15.
But still, either way, by extracting methods that would reduce the cyclomatic complexity, wouldn't it?

1:54 PM
Hmmm.... perhaps.
No, it wouldn't.... it would just reduce the amount of complexity in this method (inless those other methods throws ... which would add to the complexity.

Just a dummy question. How to link an answer to the chat?

Underneath your answer is a 'share' link.
Copy that URL and paste it here.

Thnks
@rolfl codereview.stackexchange.com/a/36355/27685 A try to kill my own zombie

@rolfl Well, yes... but isn't that a good thing, to reduce the complexity in this method? I don't see how reducing the overall complexity can be done at all, unless you just do less things (remove some ifs), but then that wouldn't work as it's intended to work.
@Foobar Nice answer. I especially like the part about "Comment code while coding, otherwise it's going to never be done"
@retailcoder Nice, you have now votes 3 237 times this week ;)

@SimonAndréForsberg It's sadly true

2:04 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg - consider Class.forName(String);
Calling Class c = Class.forName("java.lang.String");
has a complexity of 4.
One path if it succeeds, and up to 3 other paths depending on the three types of exceptions that can be thrown: (although two of the three are Errors)....
LinkageError - if the linkage fails
ExceptionInInitializerError - if the initialization provoked by this method fails
ClassNotFoundException - if the class cannot be located
If you are testing code, you should be testing all paths through your method.

A really interesting, and complciated on is short-circuit boolean logic...
Consider line 1287 here:

But even if you call the method twice, it's still the same complexity. The possible paths for the throwables are the same as those from the previous call to Class.forName

which only ever evaluates the first part of the condition, thus the second part of the condition is not tested.
No, calling a method with complexity X multiple Y times has a total complexity of X x Y
(unless you are in a loop).
i.e. Class.forName(val1); Class.forName(val2) has a complexity of 8 (4 ways for the first call to exit, and then, if it succeeds, another 4 ways to continue.

@SimonAndréForsberg if I get to 10 237 I'll get a badge ...uh, no.. I need like 9 more starred... damn that "Outspoken" badge is impossible!

2:14 PM
@rolfl But in the second call, 3 of those 4 ways would cause the same results (same catch clause) as if they happened in the first call. Therefore, I have to disagree with you about that.

yeah let's make some mission: outspoken meta-post :)

Actually the third badge I have misunderstood recently. I'm seriously considering posting a request on meta SO to make those badges clearer.
@rolfl Should one of us post a question on Programmers about that complexity thing?

@SimonAndréForsberg read them out loud :p
They're pretty clear to me...

@retailcoder Sometimes that doesn't help, I still find that they are ambiguous. It's like a newspaper writing "Police shot a man with gun" - did the man the police shot have a gun, or did the police use a gun to shot the man? This may not be the best example, but there are many cases where a sentence like this can be ambiguous.

@rolfl is like 25% achieved on [badge:epic]

anyone know how I can make my XNA Games work in Mono on Linux?
would I post that on Gamedev, Programmers or Stackoverflow

@Malachi wow you like trouble

what do you mean @retailcoder?

@rolfl I'm going to ask a question on programmers about that complexity, I'm rewriting it a bit though since I noticed the thro method had complexity of one, so I'm using random.nextBoolean to determine if it should throw NPE or not. The main method still says complexity 2 for me though.

I know there is something that I can do so that I can still work on my XNA on my linux box

@Malachi just kidding. But I like the idea of writing .NET code in a non-MS IDE and running it on Linux.
What's that game like?

lol I know what you mean about that. my Windows machine is not working at the moment because I need a new keyboard for it, so I am trying to set up my linux box, and find the old code off my portable harddrive.

then I will go to the harder stuff like a "asteroids" style game

@retailcoder He's not at 2k yet! 82 rep remaining. (I'm quite sure he'll manage to get that within the next 8 hours and 13 minutes though)

the monoXNA site is in Chinese or Japanese

@200_success Hey, 200_success. Thanks for helping me clean up the tags, by the way. Hopefully this first attempt at a super-ping will work.

@Jamal super-ping?

2:55 PM
A moderator-only feature allowing me to ping any user on the SE network, even if that user has never used chat.
I've just deleted my first spam post!

@Jamal Congratulations(?)

It was just posted on the front page and deleted, so it may not pop up here.

Nice discussion there, @Malachi. Great that you're doing "advertising" :)

Bahhhh ... go to a meeting and discover the SH*T hit the fan here too?
@SimonAndréForsberg .... how much catching up do I have to do ...?

3:10 PM
@rolfl Not much I think. I posted a question on programmers about our complexity discussion. What hit the fan btw??

interesting...

@Malachi it most likely was a mistake to decline this request for site specific close reason (not that it should be accepted as is, but you'll likely in a serious need of some distilled version of it)
@Jamal

@retailcoder: Yes, I'm aware of that. codesparkle and I are still unsure how to approach this, considering we can only have three active close reasons at a time.

Whoa, programmers either like the downvote button on questions, or are bad at asking good questions. programmers.stackexchange.com/questions
@Jamal I assume we will be able to have more close reasons once we are out of beta, is that correct?

codesparkle explains this in a comment here:

Q: Can a "Not your code" default off-topic option be added to the close dialog?

rolflA number of questions have come up recently where the code is not the asker's own code, prompting a 'close' response. It would be convenient if there was an 'off-topic' close option that included: off-topic because the code you want reviewed is not your code. See the help (item 2) for on-topi...

Q: A bug in my code for a Topcoder SRM problem

BhaskarOn Topcoder SRM 598 Div II, the 250 level problem is very basic. Please see a short description and constraints here: Fox Ciel received a string as a birthday present. However, the string was too long for her, so she decided to make it shorter by erasing some characters. The erasing...

Q: Optimizing an IP generation method

Umair AhmedI have designed a proxy server which has the feature to manage miniature separate networks. Each network has space to have up to 500 nodes or 500 IPs. The code for getting a new VIP is based on a bit flag based approach. I have used an array of DWORD (Blocks) so as to skip entire 32 IP chunks, if...

3:46 PM
@retailcoder I posted a reply to that finally.
I have a sick wife and hyper kids.

@Malachi so that's a weekend with sick kids and a hyper wife?

trying to wrangle the kids and try to get the hot water heater to keep up with the wife. she feels better as long as she is in the tub I guess

with 10K questions there CR.SE looks mature enough to appeal for 5 reasons, you just better collect and analyse the data (you've got plenty!) to back up request for 5 reasons

@Jamal Got your super-ping. Main notable change was avoiding overuse of [mathematics] (see its tag wiki).

@200_success: Right. I've also wanted to burn and as they fit under anyway.

I'm anxious to try my new Data Explorer query when support for beta sites is eventually added.

Q: How can I improve this Tic-Tac-Toe code?

Julii GiambellucaThis program is supposed to be player VS player Tic-Tac-Toe game. The computer then checks whether you've won or not, or tied. The code does work, but I don't want it to work through hacking; I want it to be done the right way. Sub Main() 'Initialise variables Dim StrCoordinate(3, 3) As String...

@200_success I hope that will be sooner than 6 to 8 weeks :)

@200_success: Looks promising. There was one query I wanted to try, but it was unavailable to beta sites. I also cannot remember what it was for.

in The Whiteboard, 3 mins ago, by Malachi
@gnat I linked it in our chat, we have a moderator there that is active and another member that has a skill for writing meta posts
@Malachi lol
I'd rather having a skill for reviewing freakin' code!

Jinx!

ah wth - lol

is that like the the How I met your mother jinx or the "jinx you owe me a coke" jinx?

@SimonAndréForsberg - I'm feeling under-appreciated today .... and, what's worse, is I have actually been wrong.

@rolfl Thanks for adding that answer over on programmers. It's still quite hard for me to tell what is right and what is wrong though

But, not about the CC... ;-)

4:09 PM
I see in a newish question that needs to be abolished.

@rolfl What have you been wrong about?

-1
A: Not getting Log(n) performance from quadtree

rolflThere are two related items which I feel could be the cause of your problems, but I would have to see your code running to prove it. Still, it appears you may have 'stumbled' on the 'worst case scenario' for java.util.* ..... LinkedList. Unless you really need fast performance for head-insert, o...

I was sure that LinkedList.size() was O(n).....

@200_success Nice spotting that (Hi by the way, nice to see you in chat). "structure" is a very ambiguous tag.
@rolfl Lol, I would hope that a LinkedList keeps track of the number of elements in it using a private field.

@SimonAndréForsberg - I am tempted to dig through old Java versions.... I remember running in to this before, and .....
I think it may be a 'recent' fix (like more recent than Java 1.2).

@rolfl Wouldn't make any sense that LinkedList.isEmpty() would be O(1) but .size O(n)

4:13 PM
If it means anything, SO's structure tag has only 2,416 questions.

@SimonAndréForsberg yes it does, isEmpty() only has to see if head == null.

@rolfl Ah, true. Didn't think of that.
@Jamal I'd say that what the questions contains is more useful to look at than the number of questions using the tag. Look at the of the questions :)

Nah. Too lazy. :P

@rolfl if you want to get to 2K today, your rep score has to go the other way around :p

I KNOW!!!!!
@SimonAndréForsberg
14
A: check if a collection is empty in java : Which is the best method

Jon SkeetYou should absolutely use isEmpty(). Computing the size() of an arbitrary list could be expensive. Even validating whether it has any elements can be expensive, of course, but there's no optimization for size() which can't also make isEmpty() faster, whereas the reverse is not the case. For exam...

There's a JonSkeet reference for you!

4:16 PM
SKEET SKEET SKEET

So much for Rolf Skeet...

I saw that earlier , and * * giggled * *

@rolfl "suppose you had a linked list structure which didn't cache the size (as LinkedList<E> does)". What's he saying is that LinkedList does cache the size.

... neeed .... seventy .... five .... rep .... !!!!
I KNOW .... I was wrong, OK.... ;-)

But, in general, I was right!
By the way, that is the first Zombie that has fought back.

lol

4:19 PM
The implementation LinkedList is not general :)

That, and the fact that @SimonAndréForsberg down-voted out of spite on my Simplification CC answer:
1
A: Simplifying and optimizing the structure of this code

rolflMetrics like the cyclomatic complexity are only useful when taken in the context of your code. For example, your retrieveHistory() method has numerous calls to JSONObject where it could throw a JSONException. Each of these calls adds one to the complexity (or should do). On the other hand, I thin...

@rolfl I swear, that wasn't me!

Naah, maybe it was not Simon, but someone does not like the criticism abut the concurrency ... ;-)

Didn't notice that you had a downvote there until now

My only negative-rep on CR is from today, and from positive-rep in the past that got removed because the questions were removed.
Black Friday.... my foot!

4:22 PM
ironic if Black Friday ends up in the red eh?

No kidding.... ;-)

@rolfl What about negative-rep from downvoting bad answers?

Those answers were removed .... ;-)
So the negative was replenished, though, it does show in red, I guess.
Holy cow, batman, you're so damn pedantic today!

It's a dirty job but someone has to be it :P

There should be a comma in there, and no 'it':
It's a dirty job, but someone has to be :P

(removed)

(Removed) ... with a capital 'R'

does that kill a teen unicorn?

(REMOVED) with all caps (and bold text) to kill an adult unicorn?

@all I feel like renaming this room "The Zombie Hunters' Lounge". Thoughts?
@SimonAndréForsberg careful with that

Well, I do know that (removed) kills an Italian unicorn. Wait, what?

4:36 PM
lol

@retailcoder I think "Code Review General Room" is more inviting to new users :)

Like "The Whiteboard" is to Programmers.SE, sort of

@Jamal please remove this comment, I want to see whether it says (Removed) or (removed)....
And .... tick .... tick ....
(these are the important questions in life).

it's lowercase @rolfl

4 more upvotes for today and I've maxed 200 for today. I need a good Java zombie...

Q: What should be the name of our main chatroom?

retailcoderOur main chat room is currently called Code Review General Room, with "General discussion about Code Review." for a description. I propose The Zombie Hunter's Lounge, but I'd like the community to post their ideas here (1 per post, include why it's the best name), the one with the highest number...
