@CaptainObvious No code.

I am currently using SpecFlow, Selenium, and xUnit for testing Behavior, or UI unit testing

@CaptainObvious A user with that much rep on SO should know better about posting questions

I have at least one question like that

4:36 PM
@jrh @JeroenVannevel Opinion? You know a thing or two about unit tests in C#.

but I didn't think to add to the question because of the description of the tag

No experience with winforms or UI testing
I suppose you'll have to look at Selenium
that's the best I can do

Zak
There's a new user who deserves upvotes. For someone brand new to , the code's a lot better than I was expecting: codereview.stackexchange.com/q/134072/81541

@JeroenVannevel Roslyn doesn't have features for that readily available?

for what?
it's a compiler platform. not a testing one

jrh
4:40 PM
@Malachi is Selenium a web design thing? I use Winforms and I've got zero web page design experience

@JeroenVannevel My bad.

@jrh it is a Browser Runner, it runs the browser from your test project so that you can hook into the browser to see the elements of the page or in your case elements of the webform
it is a tool for automating Behavior Testing

jrh
so that would work for a desktop application?

Q: UI Testing Tool?

Robert MacLeanLooking for a tool to UI testing of a Windows (.NET WinForms) application. The idea is that the analysts will record the tests via some UI and it will be able to be played back over and over again. Commercial tools are fine but bonus points for free ones.

jrh
that doesn't run in the browser?

4:42 PM
Honestly, I would ignore UI testing and just do it manually

I don't think selenium works on a desktop app unless it is one of those applications that uses IE libraries, doesn't WCF do that?

Where I work we don't have any tests nor a QA department for the website

most of our apps are web apps

You just write good shit, get it reviewed by others and have a proper deploy process

I am working on Automating the regression testing right now.

jrh
4:44 PM
yeah, that's sort of what I've been doing too, though every once in a while I forget to check if a textbox is empty or something like that

Gotta make sure the effort of testing is worth it

Not sure if that means deleting or editing

though admittedly: a website is much more applicable for that kind of development since you can just push a new version
it's different for an app

jrh
yeah, I've been curious about testing because I've read a lot of blog posts promoting it but I can't really seem to find a good place to fit it in
there was one guy I used to work with who was all about that kind of testing but I'm pretty sure he did mostly web page design
I haven't seen his code but I'm concerned that making those kind of tests would make the code for a desktop application slightly harder to maintain, not easier.
I don't really want to decide one way or the other until I've seen some examples, though, so far my quick attempts to write test code like that didn't really help
It seemed like an ideal unit test for the UI is to test something that you /don't/ expect the user to type in, but if I knew that I'd fix the code
so I guess the testing framework would test every combination of checked checkbox, radio button, and more or less every possible string in every textbox? but it's kind of brittle to write something like that when the GUI changes its look and feel frequently in the early stages

@SirPython Excellent, if you were using Autotools this would get a lot more hairy

Not MinGW

@SirPython Also, when compiling with cmake, make sure to do cmake -G "MinGW Makefiles" ..

what do you call the pre-testing that a dev does before they hand off new code to be QA'd?

Well, reality rarely lines up with theory
@Malachi Compiling without errors?

7:13 PM
@Malachi why do you have a QA department, but no unit-tests??

lol

manual testing should be unnecessary, because you should have a full test suite from unit-tests over integration and UI tests before stuff even gets to QA

should being the keyword.

just run that suite, everything else is basically a waste of manpower at that point

work is being done by a contractor that originally created the application.... it isn't following the same path as the other projects in house

that would fall under smoke testing before QA testing, right?
