CodeReview is the site to get your code reviewed. This site is specifically for problems that prevent you from progressing on your project. Also, you should never link to your code. Always include your code in the actual post, using the correct format (4 spaces before each line of code) — Vince Emigh 1 min ago

@Hosch250 that's great UX, just force shutdown and reboot with no prompting

@janos More hours in the day - or more people to spread the work across, so we have more time.

10:38 AM
you spend half the time doing the work and half the time blocking on the definition of done because your coworker knows it better and he really does but I wish he didn't because complain complain complain

Just trying to think off the top of my head now
we have.. 5 developers, including myself
6 *
and together we maintain 4 products

you mean you don't have time to do it

further, one of our products is in javascript, and I'm the only person with javascript competency in the team
which is a blessing and a curse

it's really not healthy when only one dev knows how something works

well, yeah, but that's my point
our team is pretty lopsided and we just don't have enough developers
but because my team is internal applications not much focus is given to it by the business because it is not customer facing. that's an attitude that I'd like to change

10:40 AM
@janos Sure it's healthy, healthy for your employment ;)

once you have the routine, it doesn't take much time

we don't make customer facing products, but we make products that make us sell those customer facing products much more efficiently.

and you save a lot of time on debugging

after we released the product i made to internal users, we saw a 3x increase in profit to those users

@DanPantry Yeah... our internal cms is written with tables

10:42 AM
@janos yeah I mean reviewing is not hard - it's just we don't have enough time to do it because we're constantly adding more features
i've taken this past week off developing features to upgrade our 3rd party libs and it has exposed so much technical debt that I have to pay off now in order to get the codebase working with the new version

when you say you don't have time to do it, you probably don't include the time lost due to bugs and regressions in prod that could have been prevented
regressions are very expensive

@janos No, I'm not excluding that

debugging code days/weeks/months later is very expensive

The main issue is that we literally are never given time to work on the existing codebase. We must always add new features.

maybe you're not excluding, but probably underestimating

10:43 AM
There is never a time allocated for sitting down and fixing technical debt
That alone is a blocker on doing anything else

I recommend reading The Clean Coder
one of the first chapters is about Saying No

I have read it, and I agree with you
But some things you can't push back on

at the end of the day, if your managers don't let you do your job right, you have no choice but find a better job
you're not going to tell a carpenter how he should make your chair
because you don't know sqat about making chairs

unfortunately my boss used to work in IT so he thinks he knows how to make chairs :P
Hold on, let me just find the features I have to implement this sprint
There at least 14 tasks assigned to me to do by April 8th, which is 61 hours of work
and there has been more work added into the sprint yesterday (we did our sprint planning on monday)
So you can see the sort of environment I'm in - we use sprints, but new stuff is added in the middle of a sprint an dit all needs to be done by the end of the sprint else you look bad
It's not really agile

The first rule of sprints: sprints are immutable

10:49 AM
Yeah, the higher ups know that
just buying The Clean Coder on the kindle so I can read it at work

btw, introducing code reviews at work is usually a huge hurdle at first
it takes (gruelling) months before others start to really appreciate it

See, we were actually meant to do code reviews
It was one of the things the technical architect mentioned when I joined
however they were "on hold" because of product development that took priority as it was late
Still on hold now.
We really do need more developers
right now we have the technical architect, who is not a developer "officially", coding one of the products

I can do code reviews at work as long as we don't spend too much time on them

it's crucial how you implement it. Many things can go wrong and prevent from taking off

like interrupting the progress of our sprints

10:55 AM
I've been experimenting with different ways to explain it well

We review everything here, code and hardware, before it's passed towards production.

LOL gl we don't have merge requests

especially note the "Code review horror" lines

Everything is committed to trunk, so even if we review something it is already in "production" in a sense
TFS <3

ouch

10:56 AM
Branches are hard to do right.

I have actually switched to git locally so I can at least use git diffs and branches and whatnot
as TFS ones suck

@janos do your colleagues know that you're a Code Review moderator?

a few friends

I sing the praises of CR in work a lot
The only person who did anything with it is that they went on CR, saw that I had posted a review on work lunch time, and then threatened to take that to my boss if I kept on posting on CR
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wear my CR and SO tees to work, and my colleagues know I use SO, but I don't really talk about CR
That said, I used to do like 3 reviews at work a day ;)

11:03 AM
I don't post during the day
mod activities are almost invisible, so that's fine

I describe code reviews on CR as "taking a 5 minute break to mentally reset myself by shooting at another piece of code"
(but they take longer than that)

That's essentially what I do. I do post lengthy reviews, but that's mostly because I type quite fast
150 words per minute means I can write a decent sized review in 5 minutes

yeah but I can't read and execute that fast
BrainVM is slow

I was really bad at the typing test you guys did a few days ago
some of you were so fast it's nuts

I think I do 55-65 wpm

11:05 AM
:D

during the day I only post at lunch break
and I stay away from this room
2

@DanPantry The typing part isn't the problem. It's about what to type.

this room is your friendddddd

time to go for lunch

I just got 73 wpm, but I'm better on my actual keyboard instead of lying down on my laptop
Mar 15 at 18:04, by Dan Pantry
http://10fastfingers.com/typing-test

11:10 AM
76 but it's not code
and there's no thinking involved
code types slower and I have to actually think about what I'm saying, lest it sounds wrong

I have a mouse button bound to function(){ *newline* }
typing code fast feels awesome

Q: Why's this question on-topic?

tacI know about all of the discussion about what's on-topic, but I wanted to ask this question about a specific question, to satisfy my wonder. The question in question: Handling exceptions I don't know about. It's a pretty Python-specific question, because Python is almost unusual among program...

well they're wrong
You can't just "add" real code
you can try but it never ends up nice
and then we comment that you've used the wrong tool for the job or that there's a simpler way in this case, and then they'll say "that's nice, but what about this pattern, is it good"
because that's what they're asking about, "review my pattern", which sounds a lot like a good question for programmers if combined with an explanation

yeah... that's my read on it

> It's a pretty Python-specific question, because Python is almost unusual among programming languages in its use of Exception Handling for control flow where most other languages use it as a last resort.
Is that^ really true??

@Malachi I think that's OpenGL, not sure what language it's implemented with but I left a comment

@PinCrash looks like C++ to me

Just keeping in mind that "program my own version of the game Pop the Lock for the iPhone" doesn't necessarily mean that their version is also for the iPhone

looks too readable for C++
also literally in his post

}

considering they're all duplicate lines beside the second param

should be a function call

12:34 PM
Besides, how do you do a switch for <= unless you know the exact values

+1; +10 if I could. My answer directly solves the immediate problem, but using more Pythonic idioms like enumerate makes the code better in general and this probably deserves the accept over mine. One (marginal) improvement might be passing start as a keyword argument to enumerate, instead of a plain number. @dylan to learn Python idioms like this, you might want to watch Raymond Hettinger's Transforming Code video; also consider posting at codereview.SE once it works, there's some more small things you can do that don't fit in comments. — lvc 34 secs ago

You can use an object if you know the exact values
var flyAnimateValue = {
    10: 0,
    20: 100,
    30: 200
}[flyAnimate];

A: Two sprite-drawing functions for Amara game

12:37 PM
you can probably simplify it into a oneline per switch case if you want

just call me the zombie killing zombie
@Quill ?? not sure I am following you....

oh never mind
also your false true example isn't really 100%
if (true || false) {
    if (false){
        console.log("true");
    }
}
it makes the code for checking true extraneous

if (descendAttack && !rightMouseActionHappening){
    rightMouseActionHappening = true;
}
if (descendAttack){
    rightMouseActionHappening = true;
}
2

good point.

unless you're dealing with truthy values that are not true

12:45 PM
@Quill that is the point
if you look at the Original code and you remove descendAttack that is what you have, if true if false

once you do that, though,
if (descendAttack || rightMouseActionHappening){
  if (!rightMouseActionHappening){
    rightMouseActionHappening = true;
  }
  //200 is pretty badass
}

if (descendAttack) {
  ctx.save();
  ctx.translate(bugX+60, fly.getDrawAtY()-40 + 90);
  ctx.rotate(Math.PI);
  ctx.drawImage(silverSword, 0, -10);
  ctx.restore();
} else {
  ctx.drawImage(silverSword, bugX+ 60, fly.getDrawAtY()-40);
}
if (descendAttack){
  rightMouseActionHappening = true;
}

if (descendAttack) {
  ctx.save();
  ctx.translate(bugX+60, fly.getDrawAtY()-40 + 90);
  ctx.rotate(Math.PI);
  ctx.drawImage(silverSword, 0, -10);
  ctx.restore();
} else {
  ctx.drawImage(silverSword, bugX+ 60, fly.getDrawAtY()-40);
}
so obviously

I like where you are going with that
I am going to steal it...

if (descendAttack) {
  rightMouseActionHappening = true;
  ctx.save();
  ctx.translate(bugX+60, fly.getDrawAtY()-40 + 90);
  ctx.rotate(Math.PI);
  ctx.drawImage(silverSword, 0, -10);
  ctx.restore();
} else {
  ctx.drawImage(silverSword, bugX+ 60, fly.getDrawAtY()-40);
}

there's a lot of unnecessary logic

there is a lot of stuff going on that is messy you are right @Quill
if (skeleton.getAlive()){
  ctx.fillStyle="#FF0000";
  ctx.fillRect(drawAtX+30,skeleton.getY()-50,((skeleton.getHp()/2.2)),6);
  ctx.fillStyle = "black";
} else { /* If it's dead, just write DEAD */
  ctx.fillText("DEAD", drawAtX + 37, skeleton.getY()-40);
}
ctx.fillStyle = "black";
ctx.font = "bold 13px sans-serif";
ctx.fillText(name, drawAtX + 25, skeleton.getY()-60);
fillStyle, fillStyle, fillStyle

tamI think the question in general is best summed up as, should Laravel's App::make() be considered a dependency? On the one hand it can instantiate any number of different implementations, so maybe it is not a hard dependency. On the other hand, should a class really be responsible for calling App:...

@Duga no
@CaptainObvious also no

@Querenker Code Review is for concrete, real implementations only! In this case, it would get closed as example code, as well as a lack of implementation. — Pimgd 29 secs ago

Q: Where does "make my code more efficient" questios belong to?

gsamarasSO or Code Review? I would say Core Review, since it is for improving the code, but.. thus I felt I should ask. Stimuli: How can I change this code to be more efficient?

maaan that's a big lump under my carpet right now
@GrimaWormtongue There's no-one else awake except phrancrash
so I guess I'll take a shot at it

@GrimaWormtongue lol "Core Review"

off topic but does anyone know where I can get some antiglare for my screen?
The other option is to get blackout curtains which are.. not cheap
also, amazing, the only desks that are 160cm are >£300 FML

Damn

I have a 120cm desk now but it is just not big enough for 2 24'' screens + a microphone
and small speakers

2:32 PM
It got deleted?!
oh wait that was the question it linked to

ouch.. £60 each
would be cheaper to get the blackout curtains instead of getting two of those :D

@GrimaWormtongue someone needs to write a big long mso post so we can close these as a dupe

> Uncaught ReferenceError: angular is not defined
well sh*t

2:35 PM
@Pimgd want a hand? lol

define angular before your script

yeah but... all I did was add a library to bower

bwahahahah
I just found my work laptop on argos for £300

Maybe one of these would work for you?

@PinCrash yaaaay cubicles

2:38 PM
@PinCrash Uh, yeah, if it blocked out the sun to the left of me :D

@Pimgd ya, cubicles. What of them?

This is home improvement stuff - not office improvement

Well you could also just put up a curtain in the window ;p

I have blinds, currently

Curtains > Blinds

2:39 PM
Yeah, but it's not my choice (I rent)

Oh.

Getting curtains would involve making holes in the walls
Additionally, it's a bay window..

Guess you're SOL eh

Pretty much
argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1917910.htm looks like my best bet if they were thinner

This question would be more suited to be posted at Code Review, as it stands it's not a good fit for Stackoverflow — Brad Thomas 48 secs ago

... looks like bower, by default, sorts things ... alphabetically...
so if you have aaa library that depends on angular, the default settings make it go boom?
wtf

reasons why no one uses bower anymore: that
npm is the way to go

:(

this is the reason I don't grab random stuff to do crap for me off the internet

Although it's such an easy fix you could just fork it and fix it yourself

but coworker said heeey man you should use some libraries for this
> would say CoDe Review

Questions that don't state how much faster it needs to be belong on the garbage pile. There's a world of difference between making it 1.5x faster vs 10x faster. The most common reason such an obvious goal is not stated is because they just don't know. So there is no actual problem to be solved. — Hans Passant 1 hour ago
I think that's very fitting. Perhaps we should take that to our meta as well.
@Pimgd That question derailed quickly.
Good thing they acted upon it though.
Let's hope it actually does something.
