@JohnRW Bounties are a sure-fire way

just started with codereview - i guess i can't put stackexchange rep out as bounty in codereview?
I'm a cs student and don't really feel confident enough to review myself, but I'm starting to hang around here, reading learning so that I can get some rep to put out as bounty later :D
Getting my own stuff reviewed would help learning immensely though :(
oh well

if you ping me in 40 hours when the bounty can be placed, I'll put one on it for you

@JohnRW if you can't put a bounty on your question, then you'll just have to be patient - good reviews take time to make

This would be on-topic at Code Review, however if the OP decides to post there, they will want to explain in plain English, in addition to the code, what this query is meant to achieve, and a title that reflects that. — Phrancis 26 secs ago

@Duga Yikes, that view query is kind of scary
Can someone spot the error?^^ ;)

@nhgrif Ad hominem? Seriously?

5:50 PM
@JohanLarsson Telling someone they don't understand something is very different to insulting someone personally.
The race condition you have been discussing all day (and adamantly defending) is one that I had to deal with on my first day of the job in my current place of employment.
@nhgrif is right, there is a race condition in your code.
Just because you only call that method once does not mean that someone else might not call it from multiple places, assuming it is thread safe.

still, the statement "you don't understand the race condition or how race conditions even work" is flammable material, at least taken out of context.

The latter part might be, but the first part is definitely factual

@Phrancis wtf is 'null'??

It's not ad hominem. You don't understand.

@Mat'sMug Bingo! It's the string, 'NULL'. Found this crap in a script someone handed me, promptly fixed it

so is this thread safe:

    var ints = new List<int>();
    ints.Add(1);

Yes

and how is it different?

any thread entering Foo will have its own copy of ints

6:10 PM
same in the other example

I didn't see the other example :)

the sets are shared state though
should still be safe, worst case is wasted cycles

It's not. I am mobile so explaining this is difficult at the moment

it's like @nhgrif said: without locking, there's no way you can control when any two given threads are going to be entering that block

@DanPantry No. Showing with an example where my error is would not be. Making sweeping assumptions about my skill level is. But not very important, I'm never offended on teh internet :)

two threads could evaluate (checkedTypes == null) to true and enter the block, and then thread 1 assigns the reference, and thread 2 overwrites it

ok, expanding sample, opening vs

eh, threading bugs / race conditions are famously hard to reproduce :)

But importantly, you can make no guarantees about the number of times it will overwritten

    public static int Foo()
    {
        return Bar(null);
    }

    private static int Bar(List<int> ints)
    {
        if (ints == null)
        {
            ints = new List<int>();
        }

        ints.Add(1);
        return ints[0];
    }
safe?

6:20 PM
No

I say safe

Uh

Definitely not.

I don't know C# well enough for that snippet

Foo called from thread A, then thread B before thread A has finished
ints[0] may not necessarily be 1

6:22 PM
It doesn't matter if it is 1 though

List.add as far as I know is atomic, but list add then list access is not an atomic operation

I think this is safe, but really weird

Wait, NVM
I read ints as being on the class, when it isn't
Yes, that's entirely self contained, so it should be fine
(Though it is still weird)

@nhgrif yeah, agreed it is weird, stripped down variant of the original code
I don't really know how to explain that the original code is safe now

Could I ask for a link to your code again? The original version

6:24 PM
thread A enters with a null ints. checks, enters the = new List<int>() code block; thread B enters with a null ints. checks, enters the = new List<int>() code block; thread A runs ints.Add(1); thread B runs the assignment - work of thread A is overwritten.

@Mat'sMug If the entire ints assignment is within the closure, would that not be thread safe?
Now, if you were to pass a non-null ints to Bar.. that would be bad

Johan, I didn't say your code has a bug. I say it's not thread safe (and it's not)

@nhgrif We need to find the bug then

(doesn't solve the problem)

6:26 PM
kill Bar with fire

I didn't say there is a bug

I agree, I don't think that is thread-safe.

it probably doesn't matter much though

It depends how it is being used.
Sometimes, thread safety isn't an issue.

6:32 PM
to be clear, do you see the race condition in the list?
The list is trivially thread safe to me.

only in the case where the passed-in value is null

What?
In your original code, there were at least two races conditions I saw

@DanLyons we control that, it is private so null is always passed in when we start recursion
@nhgrif the sets?
I'm not sure about them.

am I correct in assuming that Bar is really the ShouldCheckPropertyOrField method in the github link?

I think ShouldCheckPropertyOrField has too many responsibilities. and I don't like that ref parameter.

6:35 PM
So, here is the race condition I see:

Guess I can throw in an rw-lock per set

When ints is null, you go into the if body. Let's say that Bar() is called twice at the same time, so the first two statements are executed one after another (the condition check).

Next, call A completes, creating the list and adding 1 to it.
Then, call B completes, creating the list (the condition already validated that ints is null, so that is the next statement), and adding 1 to it.
Now, your list is {1} rather than being {1, 1}.

that's the thing with threads: you can't know when who is going to be running what

    internal static bool IsImmutable(this Type type)

    private static bool IsImmutable(Type type, List<Type> checkedTypes)

@JohanLarsson do you still have the link?
I will restate the two things that can happen due to the lack of safety of your code
And again, I didn't state that this would cause bugs or produce incorrect results, but the point here is that it's not thread safe. I feel that you don't understand how it's not thread safe, and that can definitely lead to problems for future code (regardless of whether or not it is a problem here).

So there's one way. But also, because checkedTypes is a List and not a Set, you could end up with the same value in there multiple times in a race condition.
that?

No
show me the snippet?
The method that we've been talking about (the whole method)

no, the real method
link to your code again?

here but it was n commits back.
Only change is making the sets concurrent iirc

        private static bool ShouldCheckPropertyOrField(Type type, ref List<Type> checkedTypes)
        {
            if (checkedTypes == null)
            {
                checkedTypes = new List<Type>(1) { type };
            }
            else
            {
                if (checkedTypes.Contains(type))
                {
                    return false;
                }

                checkedTypes.Add(type);
            }

            return true;
        }
this method has 2 race conditions
both on the if clauses
The second if clause is resolved by using a ConcurrentSet (I guess, whatever that is... Mat'sMug seemed happy it'd resolve it)

8:49 PM
no set in that method

hehe, someone at work just found this comment:
// TODO: Account for Puerto Rico
        if (checkedTypes == null)
        {
            checkedTypes = new List<Type>(1) { type };
        }
That part is not thread safe.

@nhgrif that would be true if we did not have control over checked types

It's not thread safe.

@nhgrif as written it is, eachlist is thread local
unless you use reflection to call the private method but not protecting against that

You're passing by reference.

8:50 PM
yes but we control the creation of the reference

wait, why are we even passing a list in here?
Nevermind. I give up. This code is not thread safe. There may or may not be a bug. The code is weird.
