A: What is the fastest way to send massive amounts of data between two computers?

BlueRaja - Danny PflughoeftSince the servers are physically next to each other, and you mentioned in the comments you have physical access to them, the fastest way would be to take the hard-drive out of the first computer, place it into the second, and transfer the files over the SATA connection.

8:14 PM
@EBrown No :( I'm not important enough there

@janos Not as bad as I thought.

yeah

Man this traffic really irritates me.
Takes over an hour to drive home (less than 25 miles, ~40km).

SE chatting while driving?

8:16 PM
No, checking Google Maps to see if there's a faster route.
There is not.
The next fastest route would leave me to drive an extra 9 miles.
And it shaves 5 minutes off the trip.

Sounds like the average commute in heavy traffic?

@skiwi This is light traffic for Detroit.
It's taken me over an hour and a half to do the same commute before.

Oh...

(Once it was almost a two hour drive.)
And there are certain spots on the road I avoid like the plague.

I wonder what the university is doing to us in this course... We need to build a Remotely Operated Vehicle from scratch within a budget

@skiwi Any major? Is there a veterinarian on the team? youtube.com/watch?v=DTVOK2yvbBM

What should I imagine with Detroit's back-roads?

8:22 PM
@skiwi Potholes/chunks missing every few metres.

@itsbruce Closest to that would be Biomedical tech :P
@EBrown Oh... okay, I was thinking about roads between small villages, but that didn't really add up with Detroit

@skiwi No, the "back-roads" here is merely a metaphor for any non-express-way.

Don't they also get jammed up at some point?

@skiwi /s/some point/many points/
This is part of the reason I hate working in this area.
Traffic is a nightmare.
Usually the first ~10 miles of my commute take over half an hour.

You can spend that time relaxing.

8:28 PM
No you can't...lol

No, only in quiet neighborhoods with speed limits of 25.

Yeah, and to get to those you have to take precarious routes through subdivisions.

I like walking, but you'd need to bring water with for 4+ mile distances.

It's always interesting for me to see US speed limits

We have 30 km/h for residential areas, 50 for bigger streets in city, sometimes 70 in industrial areas/very big roads, 80 outside cities, or 60 on smaller roads outside cities, 100 occasionally between cities and 120 or 130 on the highway

8:30 PM
@skiwi Sounds similar to ours.

@skiwi That's not far off from the U.S., though you won't find many 30km/h areas.

Congested highways are usually 100 though
@EBrown They're literally all over the place here :P

Residential are usually 30MPH.

My entire commute is anywhere from ~45mph to 70mph.

Outside residential is 35-45.

8:31 PM
And it still takes over an hour to go ~25 miles.

Country/highway is 50-55.

What's the fastest you are allowed to drive in the US?

@EBrown You should persuade your company to build a balloon launch pad.

In general, not really a specific place

@skiwi 60 MPH on the freeway, generally.

8:32 PM
@skiwi Some roads have no limits, but in general it's 70mph.

Some places let you do 70, but they are less common.

@Hosch250 Not up here.

Seems so slow compared to us :P
Highways are more fun in Germany though :P

Most areas up here are 55 mph or 70 mph.
And 70 is much more common in recent years.
In fact, I think the state I live in (Michigan) was the one talking about raising the speed limit on highways from 70mph to 80mph.

60 is more common because of recentish studies showing death rate in accidents is much less than 70.

8:34 PM
@Hosch250 You must not drive Michigan much. ;)

@EBrown Never
I've only driven MN, I've been in WI periodically, and IA once.

130 km/h is like... 80mph?

@skiwi Yep.

It's always fun entering the highway at 140 km/h lol

@Hosch250 In Michigan all of the interstates are almost always 70mph.

8:36 PM
@skiwi My mom freaks out when I go the full 55 :)
@EBrown My parents are throwing a fit because WI is considering going up to 70.

@Hosch250 ♪ I can't drive 55. ♪
@Hosch250 I don't mind 70mph, I mind all the psycho's in Michigan that drive 85+ on the highways.

@EBrown If you were close to the country like I am, you could.
@EBrown Fun!

@Hosch250 Nah, when I lived in the country I got a speeding ticket for 120 in a 55.

I'm still taking driving lessons... For some reason it is creepy going 60 km/h or sometimes even 80 km/h on small roads in the middle of nowhere, but it is what others expect you to do here

So the joke with my dad and I was always the Sammy Hagar song.

8:37 PM
@EBrown Boy, you could get your license revoked for that.

@Hosch250 Detroit is full of aggressive drivers.
@Hosch250 I did. For a year. (That was when I was 17, too.)

@EBrown Tell me about it. Sounds like everywhere else.

On the highway in Germany you can be driving 160 km/h and still be passed by someone going 100 km/h faster, easily

@Hosch250 Oh no, you have no idea.

@skiwi I'm still taking lessons too.

8:38 PM
@skiwi Well the Autobahn is a bit different.

@EBrown My dad did the autobahn when he was a guard on the wall.

@Hosch250 I want to drive the Autobahn some day.

He did a staid 50-some KPH.

On the Autobahn you can also consider yourself lucky if an exit is shown 300 metres before
Over here 1200 metres is very common, with another sign at 600 and another one at 300

Here the signs are usually 1 mile, 3/4 mile, and 1/2 mile. The last one is usually 1000ft before the exit.

8:40 PM
Seems fair too

But, in Detroit, they are usually 1/2 or 1/4 mile (or less).
Well, you consider that 1 mile at 70mph is almost a minute of driving.
So it gives you plenty of time to get over to the exit.
In Detroit, you're lucky to get a sign > 1/2 mile before.

@EBrown My mom tells stories about coming off one ramp, having to cross 5 lanes, and get on the exit a few thousand feet off in Minneapolis.

@Hosch250 We have those here.
We also have the "Michigan-left", which is basically a "U-turn."

Where I live 2 lanes (per direction) is the standard, higher up in the country you get to 3 or 4

If you want to turn left on a lot of roads up here, you have to go past the spot you want to turn left at, do a U-turn, then cross the entire roadway to go right to your destination.
We also have designated U-turn lanes/signals.

8:43 PM
wat...

We have traffic lights specifically for a lot of the U-turns up here.

Ever heard of the Corries?

That intersection is just down the road from my work.

Does the U-turn even make any sense?

8:46 PM
@skiwi Sure it does, it makes complete sense.
That's another intersection which is a prime example.

Why not just... directly turn left? :D

@skiwi Because there are a lot of people who have been hit from that.
And it slows traffic down.
Believe it or not, the U-turn method is much faster than the turn-left method.

@skiwi N to W instead of N to S?

I guess the traffic isn't as bad around here to see those issues

We have a lot of it up here.
And the nice thing about the U-turns is that a lot of them have designated lights just before the actual intersection, so most of them near intersections are pretty safe.

8:47 PM
I know we have one 80 km/h road here of which I have no clue how you would actually exit or enter it during heavy traffic... Most intersections have traffic lights, but a few of them don't
Maybe I was imagining U-turns without traffic lights

@skiwi A lot of them that are spaced well-between intersections don't have lights.
I'd say, probably 1/4 of all our U-turns have lights.
But those are the ones near other (large) intersections.
Almost time to go home.
Maybe I'll actually leave on-time today.
