Q: C++ Polling Application

ChrisI am working on a project for class and I'm kind of stuck on one part. Its a polling program that right now runs fine, it asks 5 total questions where they rate importance. It allows for 10 users to answer. I need it to run a Results function which I started at the bottom of the code. What I ...

@JeroenVannevel i think it's good if you can point to specific accomplishments in projects as well. like "Reduced average API response time by xx% by rewriting FooBar component". that said, i've never been on the hiring end of things

Now sure why this just got a downvote:

Q: Foundation for 2D dungeon crawler game

SnizzlenoseA game I've created to implement everything I've learned and to further build upon. I just recently learned classes so I'm probably using them wrongly. Every bit of criticism is appreciated, I don't want to create bad habits. #include <iostream> #include <time.h> #include <vector> #include <string>

:/

area51 - resume-review.se?

It's actually a really good question.

12:01 AM
@rolfl i would like to see that

@rolfl Doesn't that sort of undercut Careers 2.0?

I see a follow-on question coming from Jeroen

@mjolka I would think so too but I don't have any measurements (or noticed any need)

@nhgrif Check the comment I added. There's really not much description about what the game is about.

Hmm, fair enough.

12:02 AM
@rolfl Qué?

I don't see how it anywhere is a "really good question".

@JeroenVannevel I see you updating your version, then asking for another review ... ;-)

He said it's a dungeon crawler. Is that not specific enough for you or are you not familiar with that genre?

@rolfl Ahh yes, I uploaded an updated version a few minutes ago. The one I'm about to do now has the more recent changes too though

@nhgrif a) Not familiar with that specific genre. b) Don't think it says much about what kind of monsters and stuff the actual game contains.

12:04 AM
Actually, I take that bad. It's not "really good"... I didn't actually realize quite how long the code was, but still...

> Foundation for 2D dungeon crawler game - A game I've created to implement everything I've learned and to further build upon.
^^ that's all the description there is.
Also:
> I don't want to create bad habits.

"2d dungeon crawler" is actually relatively specific, and I'm letting the lack of detail slide because he seems to have done this primarily as a project for learning how to use classes.
But I definitely understand not wanting to let bad habits slide.
I stopped scrolling at the end of his main() function because I saw there was already plenty enough to write a decent sized review on... I didn't realize how long it was...

@JeroenVannevel if your projects are in an app store or on github... why not link them?

@mjolka I provided the github link in my contact info -- too hidden?

i'd also think about moving projects above awards and publications

12:08 AM
mmm I suppose. Although that would put projects on both pages, which I don't really like

@JeroenVannevel yep. why not like Moviepicker ([app store link], [Github]), TVDBSharp ([Github])

@mjolka Alright, I'll change that up. although I'll have to mess with the latex code then and that is a scary place

What do you think of the "tagging" portion of the projects?

12:11 AM
^ I was wondering how he actually exited the program...

@JeroenVannevel Why are you using LaTeX?

@JeroenVannevel i like the tagging, but i would also try to work the tags into the body, like with ASP.NET Web API and NUnit in the example i gave

Why not Word or a similar text editor?

@Hosch250 Fancier layout + I need to learn it anyway

It doesn't matter as long as the final version is .PDF or printed hard copy.

12:12 AM
OK.
I guess this is a good thing to learn on.

@mjolka Alright, messing with the latex code it is

I was just wondering if it had some specific advantages, because I thought using Word would probably be easier.

@Hosch250 If you want to make something as fancy as LaTeX in Word, you'll have a hard time. LaTeX takes time to get used to though, so it's a trade-off. Plus you can version control your LaTeX easily!

OK.

stupid edit button

12:16 AM
Version control would be good, and I don't know how powerful LaTeX is, but I do know sort of what Word can do.

Maybe she hates it.
Now, is TeX better or worse than LaTeX, and why do they use such ridonculous capitalization, and what is the difference?

From the side-remarks I read when troubleshooting tonight: TeX is the actual thing while LaTex, XeTeX, XeLaTeX, LuaTeX and others are specific distributions
kind of like Linux with Ubuntu and all those other inferior OS's
But don't take my word for it

Q: What is the difference between TeX and LaTeX?

Łukasz LewI know LaTeX and I've heard that LaTeX is a set of macros in TeX. But what does it exactly mean?

@SimonAndréForsberg Your reviews are sorely missed.

If I were going to generalize... I would say that generally speaking, comments posted by the asker on an answer are generally not worth responding to.

1:04 AM
Yeah? Why do you say that?

Don't answer it! It's a trick!

I'm speaking very generally, and there are plenty of exceptions--and this is far more true on Stack Overflow than here, but...
Often times, discussing the question with the OP in the comments section of your answer is basically chameleon question 101.

Discussions in the comments of an answer with the original asker...
Since you don't understand that it doesn't make sense to compare a navigation controller to a segue, I recommend that you just write the code, see if it causes the problem you suspect it might, and when it does, bring it back and post the actual code with the actual problem. By then, you'll hopefully have a better understanding. — nhgrif 18 secs ago
... always a bad idea...

Questions of type Is there a better way of doing this? usually go to the CodeReview SE. — Yorye Nathan 34 secs ago
@YoryeNathan Perhaps you are right, however pseudo-code is ALWAYS off topic on Code Review. — nhgrif 20 secs ago

parse.stackexchange anybody? We'll finally have a place to dump the endless onslaught of users who don't understand that "fetchInBackground" means just because you're on the next line of code doesn't mean all the code in that closure has already executed.

@YoryeNathan These are also off-topic at Code Review. Code Review questions must involve real code that you own or maintain. Pseudocode, hypothetical code, or stub code should be replaced by a concrete example. Please read the Code Review help center before making more recommendations. — nhgrif 6 secs ago

Ugh.... such a mistake...
They AREN'T two different ways to present view controllers though, Dustin. Navigation controllers aren't an alternative to segues and segues aren't an alternative to navigation controllers. They're not interchangeable parts. The fact that you're not grasping this concept is a huge sign post that you open Xcode and just look. You can figure out the difference between a navigation controller and a segue without even opening a line of code. Just play around in the storyboard. — nhgrif 20 secs ago

@nhgrif The pain one goes through trying to help people on SO... You're courageous for venturing these parts.

A: UINavigationController vs Segues

nhgrifThis is an Apples to Socket-wrenches comparison. A navigation controller versus a segue isn't even an option. They don't fill the same role. You can use a navigation controller with or without using segues. You can use segues with or without a navigation controller. A UINavigationController ...

I just doubled the size of that answer and added pictures.
If Dustin would open Xcode before he asked questions about developing apps using Xcode, that'd be a good start.

2:24 AM
Talking about this, I have a question for my app.

At this point though, I think it's sufficiently explained so that anyone in this chat could now be a borderline expert on that asanine comparison and how ludicrous it is, even if you don't even know what Xcode is...

I'm looking to add multiple pages for different things, and I don't think I need to initialize the theme and font size for each page.
So, I need to create a class for this.
Should it be static, so there is only one and always one instance?
I would be able to access it from anywhere, then, right?

If you want to be lazy and pick up questionable habits.

I didn't think this sounded quite right.

I think I'm kind of sad to know there's official documentation on singletons...

Which makes it even worse
because I got to that by following a link from an MSDN page which doesn't claim to be outdated.

So, you are suggesting I use a singleton?

OK, thanks.
So, why would static be bad?

I'm not suggesting it. I'm just linking to documentation on how you would do it and presenting it as an option.

2:31 AM
OK.

I don't know what's available in C# in terms of options for what you're trying to do.

This is a Windows Store app, quite similar to WPF.

At work, everything gets its theme from its parent.

I'll ask in the WPF room before I do anything.

So, it's not a singleton... but the parent has a reference, and all of the parents children have a reference to the same object.

2:32 AM
Do you use WPF at work?

No.

WPF has a XAML page for a view, a C# page (or VB.NET or C++/C(something)) for code behind that can access the XAML elements, and a ViewModel class to store properties you bind to and stuff.
Each page should have its own VM.
Currently, I have the settings in the VM, but I need to move it out, and I don't know if there is anywhere to keep a non-static class across pages.
There is an initialization file, but I'm not sure how much I should mess with that.

Q: How to Learn How to Program

> I have learned some pretty basic things from Codecademy however I am trying to expand my knowledge. My JS/CSS/HTML skills

But, if you did that in MS Paint, you can use Shift to lock into a line that snaps at 45 degree angles.

@rolfl I have no idea what any of that data means. But you have tables. +1 for tables.

Cool.
That bottom table has some problems with the border, though.

CLick the checkbox in the blue legend area... ;-)
"slowest" ....

5:04 AM
Whoa, that's way different

neat, huh?

Sure is. Still don't have a clue what it means, but the numbers and graphs are neat

If you turn them all off, except the "fastest", that is a graph of the time it takes to do:

Bed time, see you.

private static final long linear(long input) {
    long count = 0;
    while (input > 10) {
        input -= 10;
        count++;
    }
    return count;
}
So, the X axis is the "input", and the y axis is the time-in-nanoseconds.
make sense?
double the input value, you double the time (you loop twice as often)

5:08 AM
Explained that way, yes

OK, so, to test that the function really is 'linear' in scalability, we (Simon and I) wrote code that tests it for input value 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, ..... 8million
If you look at the "raw data" table, you can see the input sizes in the 'index' column on the left

OK

In each case, we run it for 1,000,000 iterations, or 1 second. Whichever comes first.
then we compute statistics for that input size, the fastest, slowest, avg, etc.
each of those is plotted on the chart.

Hence the Count column?

Yes, the count is the number of iterations actually run.

5:12 AM
(indicating whether 1M or 1s came first)

yup
or, how many per second.
Then Simon did some magic with some math and computed a "fitting function" for the values...

Q: Missing interface definitions

user69300I want to know whether you can post the definitions of interfaces like IPacketReader,IPacketWriter and IChecksum which will help in understanding the code better.

Damn, computers are fast with numbers.

essentially, he took 'standard' complexities, like O(1), O(n), O(n^2), O(n log n), etc.

@CaptainObvious Wut?

5:15 AM
with those functions, he figured out what the "coefficients" should be, and then does a best-fit algorithm, and reports the coefficients back to me.
including which function is actually the best fit....
i.e. He proves that this is an O(n) function, in this case.
(with a loose definition of "prove").

"Proof" being more statistical than mathematical?

Correct, imperical
He proves it is not O(1), and not n^2

Did you mean "empirical"?

I think this question has to be off-topic.
The code is written in and I was about to remove the tag...
But his question says he's only writing it in Swift for the convenience of playgrounds and he intends to translate it back into Objective-C... which means certain Swift things won't be allowed in the answer.

@nhgrif Does he explicitely state that? If not, then it's valid to use Swift-only Swift in your answer

> Please note that my application is written in ObjC and I will translate the solution to ObjC, Swift is only being used for the convenience of playgrounds, and this is why I am using (for example) the NO_VALUE const instead optional, or bunch of if-elses instead of a Swifty switch case where

Hey @all

I can't answer it in pure Swift, because my first thought is he needs to put a bunch of optionals in there, but you can't do that in Objective-C.
I can't answer in Objective-C, because then the question is just a "gimme teh codez (translation)" and I don't want to set that expectation.
And I also really can't answer in a muted version of Swift keeping in mind that it will be translated into Objective-C because there will be so many subtleties missed. Can I be confident he'll declare his Objective-C constants the right way? Do I know if he's going to use [[NSDate alloc] init]; or [NSDate date];? etc.

A: Find the next 7 o'clock NSDate

nhgrifThere's a much easier approach to this problem. We can use NSCalendar's nextDateAfterDate:matchinComponents:options: method to find both our next 7am and 7pm. Then it's simply a matter of comparing these values and returning the lesser of the two. NSDate * nextSevenOClock() { NSCalendar *c...

On university you get a certificate once you have mastered a group of subjects... But what does it stand for? Once I'm down I'm sure that I have forgotten most of it anyway
I can study concepts when I need to use them
