Q: Quad Tree and Collision Detection Implementation

T_01I have an implementation of a quad tree and abstract collision detection classes. The code works but looks very ugly, but I dont know what I could change to make it better. The reason I used two Interfaces insteed of just extending an abstract class is, the classes which will use this, are render...

Waiting for a new tire. Fun.

If the code is operational but you are looking for appreciable optimization, I would suggest Code Review (Excel) or Code Review (VBA). — Jeeped 1 min ago

@nhgrif What happened? Run over something with your car?

I have a spare tire .... oh, that tire.

No. It's in the sidewall.

9:47 PM
So's mine

Ours are under the floor in the trunk, I think.

I have found ways to fit CR in to gaps in productivity.... like, waiting for things to happen.

The puncture, that is. There have been teenagers up to no good in our neighborhood frequently lately.

^^^ that

9:50 PM
Someone duct-taped a dog to a tree the other day.

@nhgrif You need to change neighbourhoods.
Or are you one of the hooligans ? ;-)
Kids these days GET OFF MY LAWN!

Yes. Also cops need to patrol... I live next to one of the nicest elementary schools in town.
It's not a bad neighorhood, but there's a walking trail the connects to some apartments...

I had car problems this morning as well... Rusted muffler fell off the bottom of the car while I was driving and is just dragging

I am about to invest in a motion camera and motion floodlight.

@nhgrif Invest in a set of exploding bear traps.

9:55 PM
And call the cops any time a teenager is out in the neighborhood after dark.

That'll deal with them - and if it explodes good enough, it'll probably destroy the evidence too.
Why don't you invest in a watergun or a paintball gun (preferably the later)?

Litigation

Because I go to bed at like 8pm. And this stuff is most likely happening at 11pm or later.

Hire me as a security guard.
I'll bring a set of hickory switches.

You can't keep your nose in the text books and an eye on the assets.

9:58 PM
Wouldn't a camera and floodlight be cheaper?

I'm not taking classes this summer.
Yeah, I was just joking.

The floodlight would probably be sufficient.

As long as the kids don't find it and vandalize/steal it

Maybe.
It wouldn't stop me if you weren't there to back it up.

It would be on the roof. These kids aren't that adventurous. They're just up to no good.

10:00 PM
Fortunately for everyone involved, I'm not like that.

Ah ok. TTQW and deal with the damn old POS car, grr.

A well-aimed stone would deal with it.

An evening in a jail cell would too.
But even that is too light for what's been done over the last 6 months.

Old 1987 Corolla has seen a lot of road... 350K+ miles I think on the odometer.
Might be time to retire it soon

It's forgiven for having a rusty muffler ;)

10:03 PM
Boy, I really want to come work for you now.

??

I'll develop in the day and fight street gangs at night.

Q: Optimization of attribute access

JoschuaI just realized that I have a habit of optimizing attribute access. Here's a code example: def _update_systems(self, systems, delta=None): removed = self._removed_entities added = self._added_entities changed = self._changed_entities update_system_entities = self._update_system...

Or stalk them, anyway.
I think I'd better let the police do the fighting for multiple reasons.

SnizzlenoseA game I've created to implement everything I've learned and to further build upon. I just recently learned classes so I'm probably using them wrongly. Every bit of criticism is appreciated, I don't want to create bad habits. #include <iostream> #include <time.h> #include <vector> #include <string>

Q: Excel VBA - Code Optimization copy data to another worksheet

Anurag SinghI have the following but it takes long time to run, it is a simple wherein the user select a file and data from Sheet1 is copied to another workbook. Sub ImportApp(ByVal filepath_Report As String, file_name1 As String, wsOutput As Worksheet) Application.ScreenUpdating = False Set wbReport = Work...

@Mat'sMug any luck with the bug you had yesterday?

10:48 PM
@mjolka Nope. Going back to it tonight though

11:12 PM
@jangroth Imo thats a stupid default setting in IntelliJ and one of the first things I change if I install it. The first problem with wildcard imports can you see in this question. Another one is, that it hides which class is really used in the program, or (from the over direction) there a used class comes from. You then can't tell if this class comes from the same package (so there is no import for that) or it is included in one wildcard imports. But that might not be a big problem if you always use an IDE to view code, even during a code review. — Tom 12 secs ago

@mjolka Also, I hadn't realized but it makes IsAssignmentContext return true for all identifiers involved... and I need it to be only for the identifier being assigned to. #ParsingIsHard

Oh, you got past the thinking about deciding on whether to start working on preparing for writing your resume?

@rolfl It was a long process but once that was out of the way, it was done in a jiffy

Oh, can skip that step

.. really?
Oh
If that had been true, I would've had my resume linked for over a year with a login screen then

It was "Signin Dialog...."... here:

@JeroenVannevel Looks good. I like the 3-letter color scheme. Sticks out I guess.

@rolfl Do you also have it with this link: dropbox.com/s/dg062k43nvxqjzi/Resume.pdf?dl=0 ?

yes

And it makes you download the file?

yes....

I just get an in-browser view, even in incognito mode

@rolfl Yeah, it does read a little uneasy. It's a little less uneasy with of
In Dutch you can just translate these 3 words and it works perfectly without having to put anything in between.

OK, the lower-case things are... capturing, and novel. The left-column is clever.
interesting visual effect.
Some nit-picks....
You have a hyphenation in the wrong place here:

I know, I know.... but, you don't want people thinking of you as being the guy with the anal resume ;-)

heh.. Yeah, that is a little unfortunate

Summer Intern
I was responsible for a research project into expanding ....

were you responsible for the project, or the implementation of it?

A: Foundation for 2D dungeon crawler game

nhgrif I just recently learned classes so I'm probably using them wrongly. Yes. For this review, I intend to focus on that aspect of your code--your usage of classes. First of all, if every member of our class is static, we almost certainly don't need a class. If everything is static, essentiall...

I am no Resume/CV expert but one thought that comes to my mind is that you can remove some "I was", "I" instances. Such as: "I was responsible for a research project..." ---> "Responsible for a research project..."

Both: they told me to start figure out how Windows Runtime works and what they can do with Windows Store Apps

Submit your resume as a PDF.
Or printed hard copy.

there's definitely something strange with the sentence "I was responsible for a research project into expanding to the Windows Store Application platform."

But don't submit your resume as a .doc/.docx

11:44 PM
They only had one dormant .NET dev so they wanted an intern that knew the language/framework

Also, upvoting my non-Apple answers FTW

@nhgrif it's .tex/.pdf ;)

What's .tex?

@SimonAndréForsberg Right, I'll do that too.

@JeroenVannevel responsible for the architecture and implementation, not for the whole thing.

11:44 PM
LaTeX -- It's how you create fancy stuff

Also:
Consultant
After being selected by the Centre astheirfuture e-learning platform, I worked with
them to cater
Were you selected as the e-learning platform?

What's astheirfuture?
I can't even pronounce that.

@nhgrif My first thought when reading his code: Does static work the same in C++ as in Java? (simplified description: only one instance of each static variable)

@rolfl fixed

@SimonAndréForsberg Yes, it does.

11:47 PM
@nhgrif well then that code is not optimal!
> Combined with a daily stand-up,
^^ I assume this is not stand-up comedy?

My answer pretty much addresses only this aspect of his code (static)
So you're welcome to upvote it. ;)

@SimonAndréForsberg "meeting" added!

Last thing:
interests
unit-testing, code-generation, meta-programming, entity-framework

> I was responsible for a research project into expanding to the Windows Store Application platform
responsible for xxx into xxxx to <--- feels like double 'to' there.

11:49 PM
Really? You have no non-IT interests (that you can put on your resume?)
The fact that you are in IT should make those things interesting....

I do but the concensus on workplace.se seemed to be "leave it off"

Then leave that off too.

perhaps just remove interests all together

I'd remove interests all together.

I'm not saying add fluff, but it feels superfluous....

11:50 PM
Yeah I had my doubts about it as well

Unless you have very specific IT related interests maybe.

For what it's worth, I tend to add: Photography, travelling, and electronics as "hobbies".

But even then, if you have a very specific IT related interest that's worth mentioning as an interest, then you've already mentioned it when you mentioned the github repo of it?

@JeroenVannevel from what I have read on BBC, it is a good idea to add other interests. At least that's what I did on mine.

While they are true (they are all hobbies), I like that combination because it shows: creativeness, "exposure", and handiness in the hardware too.

11:52 PM
@JeroenVannevel on second page, you could increase the line-spacing a bit between your four projects. they are quite tightly together as it is.

Non-IT interests may or may not be good to include. It depends on where you're applying.

Also, I would add GitHub as distinct, or instead of just Git.

If you're applying for a company that has lots of projects that touch lots of different fields, or a contract-based company that will write apps for lots of different clients (lots of different subject matter), interests might be good to include.
But if you're applying to a company that just does one specific thing, it may be less important.

@rolfl If I had to mention my hobbies, it'd probably be something along the lines of "travelling, jogging, cooking" whereas the latter is probably a stretch already. I won't exactly name gaming/watching tv
So not exactly as relevant as yours are

If I had a "healthy" hobby, I would add it. It gives a good impression

11:54 PM
I think interests tells a bit about you as a person, which can be just as important as your technical skills.

Alright, interests are back on board

@rolfl To some people...

@JeroenVannevel i think the Projects section could do with some work

Meanwhile, I don't want to hear every Monday about your weekend cross-fit training.

"I acted as team-leader and maintained the Trello board, enforced coding standards
and prevented scope creep. I also developed the RESTful API which all three frontends
use, complete with around 300 unit-tests. Together with another teammember
I also created the Windows Phone application."

Yes, to some people. Hopefully it will appeal to people who will want to work with you, which are the same people you will likely want to work with.

i think you're leading with the wrong stuff -- Trello board, coding standards
i'd consider something like this
Joetz
Team leader, third year project
- Designed and implemented ASP.NET Web API backend used by the three frontends (Windows Phone, XX, and XX)
- Wrote 300+ NUnit tests, achieving xx% code coverage
- Member of the Windows Phone application development team
- Maintained the Trello board, enforced coding standards, and defined project scope

> while( true ) // Defensive programming.
umm... what? ^^

It sounds like you're asking for help writing some of your code. Is this the case? — nhgrif 57 secs ago

@mjolka Oh I like that, cheers!

11:58 PM
@nhgrif Clippy?

@JeroenVannevel np :) i could have a go at the others too, if you'd like

@mjolka Definitely. I want it to be in as good a state as possible before I spam it through the interwebs

Q: C++ Polling Application

ChrisI am working on a project for class and I'm kind of stuck on one part. Its a polling program that right now runs fine, it asks 5 total questions where they rate importance. It allows for 10 users to answer. I need it to run a Results function which I started at the bottom of the code. What I ...
