@rolfl The +1 as else the size will not increase
hmm I read that on CR it's not the idea to put up a choice between multiple options
but am I allowed to offer one main option + 2 substitutes, and ask to review those? Without caring abou twhich one would be best

Q: javascript: create object-properties from array

user2033412I'm writing a simple table-oriented storage for objects. you can, just ...don't expect a response.

Well, somebody should embed a Cleverbot-like account in this chat.

maybe they have. Maybe they are already in this room....

@apieceoffruit What is the meaning of life?

42? a piece of fruit ?

@Vogel612 ha. I just had that debate over at the oculus forums 5min ago. I took the easy Epicurian way out

You are not a human

2:40 PM
are any of us?#

@apieceoffruit No, you are the robot. I am human.

(removed)

how do you know you are human?

How do you know I am not?

Thanks Santa

2:41 PM
I never said YOU weren't. I simply said I was :)
or did I?

and that is what makes you and me human...
he'd have said something like: I am human || What is your name?

We're pretty good at mimicking Cleverbot.
He's not so good when it comes to mimicking us.

Well cleverbot is a neural net scraper of conversations had with it. therefor it DOES tend to give human responses
It is just the percentage of people having non-sequitar philisophical conversations with it are extremely high....
3

It shows that people mostly ask him questions about bots, humans and friends.

What is your Name?
I am human

2:45 PM
I always wondered why that is an important question

Yes, I know about Kant.

people rarely feel they can trust or relate to someone unless they know their name.
although it doesn't CHANGE anything.

I am not a bot.
How many programmers does it take to change a light bulb?

Actually, I don't know the name of any of you and I don't care.

None. That is a hardware problem.

2:46 PM
Also, I don't believe I can trust you. I'm sure I only got bad advice during reviews of my code.

what defines good?

it should read "false advice" not "bad advice"
advice is neither good nor bad, only right or wrong.

Come on, I always had trouble using this word correctly.

right or wrong is subjective

3:00 PM
@Vogel612 new String(byte_array)
there's also an option so that you can specify the locale

Right or wrong is subjective, yet right and left isn't.

@Simon: looks nice: kÍF!ÓsÊÞNƒ&'´ö
String(byte[], Charset.forName("US-ASCII")) --> kF!sN&'
same with forName("UTF-8")
Big endian UTF-16: এ母䘡퍳쫞亃☧듶

@Vogel612 Hmmm, there is almost no good reason to MD5 hash something, what are you trying to do?

@rolfl Up for a challenge?

@konjin even though MD5 is unsafe, someone in our company had the awesome idea to hash all our LDAP Passwords with it..

3:06 PM
LDAP?

@Vogel612 In that case... what's the byte array that you want to make into a string? And what result did you expect?

and I am the guy, who has to modify the LDAP-Export to include given passwords for every user..
expected: CY9rzUYh03PK3k6DJie09g==
the byte array is unsalted "test" through md5

and what's the actual contents of the byte array?
I doubt that you will be able to get CY9rzUYh03PK3k6DJie09g== out of that...

[9, -113, 107, -51, 70, 33, -45, 115, -54, -34, 78, -125, 38, 39, -76, -10]

there's no way that will turn into CY9rzUYh03PK3k6DJie09g==

3:09 PM
so what's the plan?

the two last bytes is not the same

make it a hex-string and convert that to a normal string?

CY9rzUYh03PK3k6DJie09g== looks like a different kind of hash

Looks like base64

@syb0rg thanks for the books !

3:13 PM
{md5}CY9rzUYh03PK3k6DJie09g==
(hex) 098f6bcd4621d373cade4e832627b4f6

if you make it a hex-string you won't have any capital letters, nor any =.
I agree with the monkey that it looks more like Base64

I can verify, that the digest in itself is correct:
BigInteger bigInt = new BigInteger(1,digest);
String hashtext = bigInt.toString(16);
--> 098f6bcd4621d373cade4e832627b4f6

what exactly are you trying to do?
2

yes, exactly. Which is not the same as what looks like Base64

huh??^^
@skiwi hash some passwords to an md5 string.

3:17 PM
I might have dealt with something regarding md5 earlier

CY9rzUYh03PK3k6DJie09g== looks like Base 64

hang on

@Simon the problem is, how do i get my byte[] into a Base64 String?

@SimonAndréForsberg if you had to choose between Robert C. Martin's Clean Code or the GoF Design Patterns book, which one would you recommend to a beginner Java coder?

@skiwi umm yeah it is. your right and left are not my right and left

3:17 PM

design patterns; "Clean Code" isn't specifically about OOP, it's about, ..well, "clean code" ;)

@Mat'sMug I think I used GoF

        String string = rawInvoiceNumber + ';' + rawInvoiceDate + ';' + rawPriceExclVAT + ';' + rawLowVAT + ';' + rawHighVAT + ';' + rawPriceInclVAT + ';' + rawPaymentDiscount;
        try {
            try {
                hash = Utils.toHex(MessageDigest.getInstance("MD5").digest(string.getBytes("UTF-8")));

            } catch (UnsupportedEncodingException ex) {
                Logger.getLogger(UnfinishedInvoice.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
and
public static String toHex(byte[] bytes) {
    BigInteger bi = new BigInteger(1, bytes);

}

it's the correct, but "wrong" answer ;)

nah, in itself it's the solution (kinda...)

@Mat'sMug No idea, I haven't read any programming book for about 10 years...

but I need the Base64 representation

@SimonAndréForsberg GoF was written 20 years ago...

the base64 of the md5?

@Mat'sMug Still haven't read it

@Vogel612 There are a bunch of Base64 implementations out there, search google and you will probably find several that is easy to use.

A: base64 encoding in Java

FrankYou need to change the import of your Class. probably somthing like this: import org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64; And then change your Class to use the BASE64 class. here some example code: byte[] encodedBytes = Base64.encodeBase64("Test".getBytes()); System.out.println("encodedBytes...

@Vogel612 The "external lib" that you are looking for is probably only just one class....
you can probably copy paste some code

3:24 PM
wee thanks @SimonAndréForsberg

@Vogel612 what language?

ah sorry misread it's from apache commons
ha

There's a free & brilliantly smalla dn fast Base64 class out there in the public domain.

@rolfl You back from your meeting?

3:25 PM
Yup... about to ping you.
@SimonAndréForsberg meeting done!
About that linux question ;-) ?

@rolfl what linux question?

Yes... I'm having a problem when trying to show a java application in full screen in LUbuntu 13.10.

This one vvvvvv

`Base64.encode("test".getBytes("UTF-8"));`
but sorry it's Java 8 only :D

best Base64 encoder/decoder ever: iharder.sourceforge.net/current/java/base64

3:27 PM
@rolfl The entire X freezes as soon as the Java application enters fullscreen and in the TTYs It logs "stuck on render ring", "render ring hung inside bo" and "timed out waiting for forcewake old ack to clear"

@SimonAndréForsberg you mean no desktop/task-bar, etc.? Or do you mean 'maximized'?

that would be impressive ;-)

bad skiwi... bad skiwi... I totally forgot about triangle strips in 3D graphics

Yeah, I guess there is ... It was just odd to see a new tag with 20 members already

a little voice told me 'Taxonomist`

hehe ... yeah I can believe that little voice... but I thought I was the only one ....

later this evening when it's not too disruptive I might find another, say 30, or so posts that could use a lookup tag ;)

I have hit an important milestone. Somebody actually upvoted one of my questions on SO.

:o

Third time's the charm, I guess.

The day you find a JVM bug, then your amount of upvotes will rise
And when you answer it... Legend goes you become a Guru.

Not bloody likely.
In fact, I don't even care about the rep, I really just want a good answer.

is it a real issue you're facing and have not really a workaround for?

@skiwi I have a workaround that is ugly and stupid.

how in earth did that even end up in a public API?
maybe stupid, but is it possible to cast with a Class[] resp String[] in front?
and I'm quite surprised to see Scala being used in a production environment... Have never really considered Scala, I thought it wasn't mature yet

@skiwi I can't see any reason why any JVM project would ever use plain old vanilla Java. I love Scala.

I unfortunately can't be arsed to try it... would take a while to master

For a good two years, I used it to write Java++ as I slowly learned many of the better parts. I still don't claim to be a Scala expert, but it has too many good features to go back.

may I ask which ones? Note: I don't intend into making this a this-is-better-discussion, more like learning

I would use Scala just for traits and actors.

I've heard a lot about them
the main grasp I have with scala is that I feel there's not enough syntax in the language, making the code look like a big clutter in my Java-eyes

Reading fully idiomatic Scala can be a bit of a stretch for a newbie. I didn't worry about that, I just concentrated on making the code work, to start with. Like I said, Java++.

sounds allright

@konijn You really made it quite easy for you in that tag, when the tag wiki says "Over time the definition has become less strict, any kind of searching with a key value can be considered a lookup." I would be very surprised if you don't get taxonomist :)

6:46 PM
Nobody said it had to be hard ;)
seriously though

@SimonAndréForsberg I optimized my graphics program for drawing the box, I think I optimized quite well, the box is gone.

you search on lookup in question text -> it has nothing to do with the original of lookup tables with pre-calced values
I think the definition really has evolved over time because there is no better word

this comment is sketchy: return 6 * 4; //6 faces * 6 elements

Q: How can I optimize this database to array structure code

ErikI need to take data from a mySQL database and message it into a format expected by the front end of an application - I can not change the front end as other services provide it data in this same format. The database is structured as follows: id type value label optgroup 1 c...

Oh really?! I didn't turn on drawing of the box... And that cost me 5 minutes of debugging why it was not visible.
Because "censored you", today I am not going to be a cube. Taking a break now.

Q: Another regex subset matcher

Jerry CoffinAfter reading @JavaDeveloper's recent question, I was inspired1 to try my hand at writing code to accomplish the same task. The "rules" for this code (i.e., its intent) is to match a subset of regular expressions, defined as follows: . (dot) means a any single character match * (star) m...

A: ConcurrentThrottledList - Will this implementation be thread safe?

ChrisW will the following implementation correctly provide this? Yes, it would appear so. Minor comments: TryRemove could be called Remove (because List.Remove is called Remove). IsFull may not be useful (because it may be obsoleted by a subsequent Remove by another thread, before this thread is...

A: ConcurrentThrottledList - Will this implementation be thread safe?

Mat's Mug@ChrisW made valuable comments, I'll add mine: Well done: I like that private fields are all1 readonly, this makes intent explicit, which works towards greater maintainability. I like that the class is highly cohesive and focused, this works towards greater readability, maintainability and ext...

If you want taxonomist, you can go for 'associative array` ;)

@konijn I'm already trying [badge:taxonomist] with :)
