Q: Class to Return Single Integer

Allan HorwitzI have a class used to return a single integer, but think there is room for improvement. The class should only return a single row every time and if no row is found it might be a good idea to throw an error from the class rather than from the calling code which will break when the integer comes b...

Q: Optimizing BFS code in Haskell

DarwinI wrote a BFS implementation that walks a tile-based field. It takes a function that should return true for walkable tiles and false for walls. It also takes the start and end points. It currently takes about 5 seconds to find the shortest path from (0, 0) to (1000, 1000) which isn't bad, but it ...

Goood morning

@konijn I think you might be alone in having morning right now, but either way, good monking to you!

greets @konijn

really, the east coast is having trouble on Monday morning huh ;)
If you can consider 10:50 morning, that is

A couple of months ago, I would consider it morning. But not anymore :)

are there any magic mod powers that could speed up migration?

2:52 PM
@rolfl perhaps?

@200_success you bounty Stealer!! lol

And yes, indeed we are interested in that question. I think however that the OP is manually going to cross-post it
iam gonna try thanks and thanks for fast answering . — user3075044 9 mins ago

@amon have you flagged it for migration?

@rolfl of course. but SO has so many flags that it can take a few days…

I just did and included a link to his message ;)
@Simon that would be problematic..

2:53 PM
@Vogel612 What's problematic?

cross-posting was forbidden when I last checked..

@Vogel612 It sure is, but when it is closed in one of the locations, there's no problem. It is sometimes used as a manual kind of migration

Well done, @monkey

@Simon that was fast...

CR mods has a direct line to SO mods

that makes another helpful flag...
the tremendous amount of 54 helpful flags......
always surprising how I almost got half of that number here on CR with about 1/20 of membership time...
you might want to write a little sum up of your link, in case it goes down, I think some pseudocode or even just a short explanation of the algorithm would be enough. — Vogel612 5 hours ago
what about this comment?

so refreshRate is say 50 fps
what is 20 milliSeconds ? ( 1000 / 50 ) , I mean what should the variable name for that be ?

3:02 PM
"Static methods are allowed in interfaces only at source level 1.8 or above" - is this really correct? Weren't static methods in interfaces allowed before that?

@SimonAndréForsberg nope
Hence there's Collection and Collections since long time

interfaces didn't allow anything before 1.8..
2

well, they allowed method declarations...

abstract classes did allow them though AFAIK.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to move my method then for now

3:03 PM
@konijn A normal name could be delta, don't know a specific name at the moment though, interval or refresh interval?

@skiwi well that was the only thing...

@Vogel612 I know, was just kidding :p

oooh, refreshInterval

@Vogel612 They actually also allowed final fields, which became public static final (constants)

I like it

3:04 PM
public @interface interval{
   int refreshInterval() default 20;
}

hmm, so factory methods returning an instance of the interface is possible? :D
(not that you can put any state in it though...)

	public interface A {
		int CONSTANT = 20;
	}

@skiwi good luck instantiating an interface
Validation.buildDefaultValidatorFactory();

@Vogel612 It's actually instantiating an anonymous class implementing the interface

@Vogel612 public @interface is an annotation

3:06 PM
@Simon had much fun with them....

@skiwi Sure it is possible with factory methods in an interface, haven't seen the new methods in Comparator for example?

@Target(TYPE)
@Retention(RUNTIME)
@Constraint(validatedBy = MyConstraintValidator.class)
public @interface CrossFieldConstraint

I love annotations :)

Wow, wait a minute, I step out for a few days and we have 2 new mods ?
6

Haven't used that @Constraint one though

3:08 PM
@konjin wut?

I would say Mod Mod Hooray

@Simon it's a hassle...

@konijn Yup, you missed that? :)

Completly

3:08 PM
wut was more astonishment that you missed it....

So CodeSparkle is out, who else ?

Ah, so we can keep the verb Jamalizing then, good

instead we got the fish and monkey, as you know..
we can also keep it, if Jamal is no more a mod..

@SimonAndréForsberg I know about Comparator, haven't had a deep thought about it though yet

3:09 PM
Just the fact that you couldn't remember their name tells something about how visible that old moderator has been...

he can still Jamalize as much as he wants ;)

@rolfl gotta love it...

@SimonAndréForsberg JPA annotations are da bomb.

3:41 PM
@Donald you had problems with them too??

@Vogel612 No, that was a statement about how much I like them.

hum...

Which is a lot.

I guess they could be helpful, if the validator hadn't been such a hassle for the amount of helpfulness (apart from returning the correct boolean value in the isValid)

Admittedly, I haven't done anything particularly difficult or complicated, and sometimes figuring out the correct way to do something can be confusing. It's no worse than C++ templates though.

in fact i should i should ask that question first, but i am asking at last!!!
can i also ask general questions also as i am not a progammer!!

@jackopen - for the most part we are a friendly bunch, and we tolerate a lot. Keep things upbeat and friendly, and you can get away with a lot in here.
That does not mean that you will always get an answer to your concerns though.
And CodeReview-related issues take precedence.

i dont need answer for all my question
i alwasy expect someone should guide me or listen me

if a kid(from schooling age) wants to jump into progamming, what are the other good sites/tools/softwares except code.org

what shoudl be ideal workflow to leaern?

any specific technology, can you suggest
or the way of teaching in shcool is ok

5:12 PM
@jackopen My personal recommendation would be: Code, code, and code.

Questions like you are asking have no right answer - unless the answer is 'depends'.

i want opinion only

Make stuff that works. When it works, post it up on Code Review for review. When you're done, make more stuff. Make more advanced stuff.

for stuff that doesn't work you can ask on Stack Overflow

I learned the most from reading documentation, figuring out how other people's code worked and adapting it to my situation.

5:14 PM
and for how do I get started with stuff you can ask on Programmers

@jackopen May I ask how old you are?

@Simon i amnot concerned about my teaching
but my students
how should they proceed into coding world?

@jackopen Are you a teacher?

no
but i am volunteer

@jackopen One fun way for kids to start coding is with Python turtle.

5:16 PM
^^^ was about to suggest logo

@200_success thanks for suggetion

If you have a Mac, everything you need is preinstalled.

scratch from MIT is another tool i know about for kid

@jackopen - the development/progression of young programmers is something that has been studied, and there are well-defined/structured systems for doing that. I just don't know what they are.

Hardcore people start coding in Assembly.

5:17 PM
@rolfl i am talking about kid who are new born
any books for them?

The problem with young programmers is that the y oftend don't have the mathematical background to support some of the more advanced concepts.
@jackopen - yes....

@jackopen Yes, I think Scratch from MIT would work well, but try to make the connection between Scratch and "real" programming languages as well.

@ so maths is must for a good progammer?

@jackopen By the way, if I would recommend a language, I would recommend Java :)

5:18 PM
I started with mIRC scripting language for example, then went into website programming (HTML/PHP), and only much much later starting with a mature language as Java

@jackopen Not all programmers have to be good at maths, and not all mathematicians will be able to write good code. They are somewhat related skills, though.

@jackopen - math is a big part of it, but the larger part is the abstract-thinking that comes with math.
I find that sort of abstract thinking is poorly developed in many kids.
and teaching abstract concepts is thus much harder.

The main skill a programmer can have is to be able to decompose a complex problem into smaller ones. That just takes practice, and improves when you see other good code.

@Koveras Umm.... no... have we talked about XNA?

@skiwi For you it's enough to write about the giant bug you found in Java 8 and you're hired instantly.

It works for JonSkeet too.

@Koveras yeah, it was likely @Mat'sMug. He's more C# than I am. He was here last night.

need a neutral opinion: tilldate i found that reddit chat, irc chat & stackoverflow chat are the good resouces for number of subjects, am i missing any other sites in this list?

My brother, and my Sister-in-law both work in IT. I say: hey, I am now a mod on an SE site... they say... what's that?

Ignorants

@jackopen google.com

5:40 PM
They both hire IT pros.

@Simon are you talking about google+ chat?

I think he's being feshticious

@jackopen No, I'm talking about google.com itself. "Search and you will find"

yeah that is good
i was listing about chat sites
& channels

Google search is kinda like chat, you ask it something, it responds

5:41 PM
like stackoverflow has differeent different subject channels
for instant query & reply

Sometimes it gives you answers to questions straight up

WolframAlpha.com

i didnt find many answers on google

or even better, Cleverbot.

that is why i am here
i didnt find many answers on google

5:42 PM
Or /dev/null

cleverbot?

What was the question, maybe you didn't word it in a search friendly way

There's this new thing, called 'Watson'......

ok WA is something for chat or maths?

Indeed, if you don't get many answers on Google then you probably need to improve your search

5:42 PM
Maths is everywhere

@Koveras yes that may be the reason; i may not have proper keyword
let us try
is it possible to chat from whatsapp to viber or viceversa? or line to whatsapp etc..?

@jackopen wolframalpha.com/examples has plenty of examples about what's good for WolframAlpha

I wouldn't expect Google to respond well to that
Just search "whatsapp chat viber" or something

sometimes people dont have too much time to read
& they can ask instantly to epxert over here

@jackopen I've already told you the answer to that one. No, it is not possible.

5:44 PM
who can guide them to a direct post
@Simon that was not for you

@jackopen Also, no google search can replace the human brain. Most searches you find for viber + whatsapp says that there is a battle going on, indicating that they are competitors. Would you expect it to work to send messages between them?

yeah someone may think
gmail can send message to yahoomail
then why not viber to whatsapp
they are less rivalry

5:50 PM
E-mail is a de-facto standard. There is no Instant Messaging standard.
Besides this, I agree with rolfl.

i am not much aware about standards
& principale/logic behind IM/emails!!
sry

@jackopen - the general progression for writing software is to start with the specs.

Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is a communications protocol for message-oriented middleware based on XML (Extensible Markup Language). The protocol was originally named Jabber, and was developed by the Jabber open-source community in 1999 for near real-time, instant messaging (IM), presence information, and contact list maintenance. Designed to be extensible, the protocol has also been used for publish-subscribe systems, signalling for VoIP, video, file transfer, gaming, Internet of Things applications such as the smart grid, and social networking services. Unlike ...

Now you are. If you want an app that can work with many different ones, ask on Software Recommendations - which you are already a member on

In your case, the specs determine the interoperability between watsapp and viber.
If you ar enot familiar with the specs, then you are not starting from the right place.

5:51 PM
It's just not a universally adopted standard like SMTP.

am i right?
i guess gmail uses xmpp & also facebook/whatsapp, dont know about viber
S/R chat moderator is yelling me not to ask questions on chat!!

@jackopen I mean to ask on the site itself. Go to the actual site and click "Ask question"

& many of my queries dont form a good question which i can post!! hence use chat as a way out!!
i know it is not good
@Simon my track record is very poor

Then improve your questions and your track record.

most of my questions are blocked/hold/deleted due to various reasons
i dont have sufficient knowledge

5:56 PM
Asking in SE Chats won't help your track record.
2

in a specific direction/subject
yeah but some my queries may be resolved that is the only i have
for the rest of thing i would be googling/hunting

Look at the comments you receive on questions and if needed; ask for how you can improve your questions. Take a look at several other questions before you ask.

ok

@jackopen - you need to read the help-center for each site you ask questions on.
http://softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/2678/softwares-instead-of-hardware
^^^ that was closed and downvoted because *you did not make time to read*
http://softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic
Instead of giving your situation (problem to solve) and requirements(your constraints), you instead asked for an opinionated *hardware* recommendation (WiFi is hardware even though there is no cable).
You were lucky to only have two downvotes.

@rolfl i agree

6:03 PM
I don't find Cleverbot all that clever: "What is the square root of negative one?" "I don't know." "Why not?" "Yes."

@Koveras Now you figured out :)

@Koveras it is not the best; it seems timepass site
@rolfl do you think i should post this question on history.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic?

No, I think you should google it yourself.

i wanted to know other things
