6:00 PM
early in the day is an euphemism. I maxed out at 00:14AM UTC!

Well, yeah, that too ....

I have been getting real work done lately.....and spending time with Family this last week. no maxing out for me lately

@Malachi - we have missed your votes... and stars
2

@rolfl Sorry

Oh, and we have missed you too

6:01 PM
I will try not to let it happen again

@skiwi In the Computer Science question I use Minesweeper Flags as an example, I have several functional fully playable AI's available at my Minesweeper Flags website <-- Disclaimer: I am the owner of this website, but this message is not intended to be promotional

you made a whole site for that? :o

@Mat'sMug here's the opposite situation, BTW....
I voted to close this:

Q: PHP login system - is it secure?

Mr JackI have created a PHP login system based off of this site. My main concern is: Is it secure? I chose that because to me it looked secure, but a 2nd or 3rd opinion never hurts. The idea of the project is to have something I can just pull into a new project directory and start off from there depend...

@syb0rg If the AI competition could be done in other languages except JavaScript, then perhaps you could count me in. But this? Naaah.

6:04 PM
and, damnit, someone found the appetite to answer it, and answer it well.,
Apparenly it was not too broad.

@SimonAndréForsberg There was a similar competition where you could code in Java, but I'm not sure where that one is.

not very likely to get more answers though @rolfl

@Mat'sMug I have a whole bunch of ideas for coding challenges :)
@rolfl I voted to leave open.

@StackExchange Very off topic, not even sure how to close.

Never underestimate the power of monkeys Code Review users.
4

6:06 PM
@rolfl I also VTC'd this

Well, it is closed now.
and I regret my close-vote

you could have retracted @rolfl now you can VTR-O

I went in to retract, but you beat me to it...
Now I think I will leave theball in the asker's court, see what he does with it.

Welcome to Code Review! It seems like you have misunderstood the concept of this site, we review existing and working code. We don't help in writing new code. Instead, try to do it yourself. If you run into a problem, you can ask a specific question at Stack Overflow and once you are done, you can come back here and post your code and we can help you write the same thing cleaner! — Simon André Forsberg 49 secs ago
^^ If I got 10 rep for each time I write a comment like this, I'd be a monkey!
5

I voted to reopen the crazy 30K-liner.

6:15 PM
@Mat'sMug Seconding that. (I didn't want to be the first one)

Apparently me neither

"Too long" questions should be downvoted, not closed. Right?
(or edited / broken down into smaller chunks)

@Mat'sMug I don't like answering a "should be" question. I can't think of a single possible Code Review that I personally would consider "too broad" though.

I should've saved somewhere on what OS my server runs...
2

As long as there's a 30k character limit and the code itself is within the question, there is no such thing as "too broad" IMO.

6:20 PM
Does anyknow of tools to connect to a CentOS linux server?

hence why I wanted to replace it with a "too narrow" close reason ;)

@skiwi SSH? IDK

@skiwi you should use tool-less ethernet cables... all you need to do is connect the cable with the little clicky-thing that latches it in place

@Malachi I was also about to suggest SSH

wireless also works

6:21 PM
Where can I buy 30km cables?
5
well I got SSH access
I more meant also having some GUI

Teamviewer?

@skiwi with SSH, you have X

I totally forgot that in my question

@skiwi ssh -X user@server

I was thinking about running some GUI locally, while connecting over SSH to that server

6:22 PM
xterm
Uhm, windows, with putty?

This is really first time diving into there
but doesn't putty only offer a CLI?

Sorry, apparently I may be a little obscure today.... ;-)
Windows offers a GUI though
@skiwi what do you want to do (big picture)

yeah any windows not ms dos 3.1 or lower offers a GUI :P
I want to be able to just access the server (and folders) in a known structure
instead of only using CLI commands

OK, then, with a KDE local machine you can use the konqueror over SSH
Alternatively, you can use WinSCP for many things

or run mc on the server, which technically is in the console, and yet is a bit of a GUI. WinSCP would probably help you a lot though

6:28 PM
I'll try WinSCP and see what it can do

@Mat'sMug Incoming

I'll mainly just host websites on the server, and it is technically not mine
but I just want to see the environment
I'm allowed to/must manage it, but cannot just install programs I guess:p

@rolfl ?

Q: Traversing binary tree in codility (c#)

user3375390I was given the following question to answer as a part of the hiring test using codility. I would appreciate if any of you can give me the right answer for this problem. Here is the problem description A binary tree is either an empty pointer or a node that consists of an integer value and two...

^^^^ that ^^^^

6:30 PM
Ow.. maybe we misunderstood something
WinSCP is only for transferring files?

@skiwi Yes, and navigating on the server as well (how else could you transfer files, eh?)
That's not the droids you're looking for?

Yes, but it can browse the far side, and if you double-click on a remote file it will copy it locally and open it for you

ah no no
I got FileZilla for that
I meant for sending commands
I know Putty can do it, but was looking for a more sophisticated GUI

What kinds of commands?
How would you like the GUI to look?

any command that coudl b eissues on the server

6:35 PM
@skiwi I think it is time to learn the commandline ... it will be the most efficient way to do the sorts of things you want to do.

hmm well ok
i can still use fielzilla or something to put the files in there
it may be fair after all

@SimonAndréForsberg Good beta site.

Does this code work? — Malachi 13 secs ago

oh look, a banana!

6:39 PM

@Malachi: I am hoping the OP is able to conform to the on-topic rules. I have already issued a warning, so I hope some progress is made.

hmm what interesting things can I do in the command line..

Really, I should not do that....
one day someone will do it.

I ain't gonna try that :D

6:46 PM
I'm trying to figure out what directories there are
something so obvious in a GUI :D

ls -d
you have colour?

nope
ls -d is not giving anything
well

meh, it should be giving .

it is giving exactly one blue .
there is color

So you do have colour.
ls -lah
Blue things are directories

6:48 PM
ok
that's a 1:1 correspondence that filezilla gives ok
now time to afk and after that read some chapter about the AI simon posted

@rolfl Does rm -rf remove both files and directories?

0
A: Traversing binary tree

Mat's MugNaming I think what mostly hurt you is your naming style. For one thing, the Tree class: class Tree { public int x; public Tree l; public Tree r; } This class is bad for several reasons: It's exposing its private fields; Publicly accessible members have cryptic names; The n...

@SimonAndréForsberg yes
recursively
most systems are set up so that the root user is prompted when running the -rf flags.
but most root users disable that pretty fast
Did you run it ?

No, I didn't run it :) But I could have use for it at work some time, deleting cache directories.

rm -rf junkdir
I have done the rm/thing before.... was a bad day, before, and after.

@Mohammad: Yes, I'm here.

@jama
@Jamal in this question i try to find code replace "WHILE"

I am a beginner at PHP as well.

but not any answer

I have an idea for weekend challenge setup

so i try to find another way and test other ways

@skiwi What's your idea?

@Mohammad the code in that question is bad code it won't run, you are missing brackets and beginning/end tags all over

Q: how to hide an image in another image in java

satya410how to hide an image in another image in java By using Steganography we can hide text in an image. But how it works for image. Anyone plz give me solution.

Someone developes an universal GUI for every challenge, be it in any programming language, as long as you can run it on your pc locally
And then all contestants can write/read to that application

@StackExchange Way off-topic

Then less people would be bothered by the GUI, so hopefully more contestants... And also one integrated way to verify solutions

I gotta go, I have some meetings

@skiwi your solution does not necessarily need a GUI!

7:26 PM
But a GUI is fancy
imagine playing SUdoku withotu GUI

Unit tests work just as well!

Hey, Corbin!

Still would need a centralized way to communicate from server to client
whether the server does a GUI or does unit testing or not

I don't agree with the need to centralize anything... I think doing that limits the possible implementations.

@skiwi Read/write to that application how?

7:29 PM
over sockets I guess

What if I wanted to write my next code challenge in Q-Basic?

Your coding challenge submission doesn't need to have a GUI, technically you don't even need any unit tests either, as long as you know that the code works :) You could just make two AI's playing against each other, or simply hard-code some positions that gets played at. Or you just put your game model up for review.

^^ that :)

I will try to make some code for the socket communication though, I will try to make it flexible so that it can be used for more than just UTTT-style games.
or rather: It should be flexible enough to be used in other games with minor modifications (Hello, generics!)

Guess I'm forced to make crappy GUI's then some day :p

7:33 PM
@skiwi or you wait until someone posts their GUI code, and you steal that ;)

@SimonAndréForsberg You code in Java, right?
I'm testing my orthographic projection

What is the yellow blip?

hmm thought it was a green cube

The directiction of the light
direction
and the rest is a blue floor
and the shadow of the cube

I don't see the shadow of the cube
Also, isn't th shadow of the grid inverted?

7:38 PM
@skiwi Yup, I'm using Java.

ok good then I can use your GUI
Everything you see there @rolfl, is the shadow of the cube
and just kidding @SimonAndréForsberg

You're showing us a picture of 3D stuff that you do and you say that you don't like making GUIs???

3D != GUI

@skiwi If we work on an interface that we both could use, you can have my GUI code :)
Showing 3D graphics on screen = GUI

We can think of something for next challenge, sure

7:41 PM
All you need is some input mechanism to hook it up to

showing 3D graphics ons creen = G
2

showing 3D graphics on screen to user = GU
2

showing 3D graphics on screen to user that can rotate the cube with the keyboard = GUI
2

There's no I in 3D graphics

showing 3D graphics on screen to user and making something happen when user presses keyboard or moves mouse = GUI
out of stars = me

7:44 PM
spce high = you
space what is this sorcery, spacing so hard, by edit capabilities

arrow-up = edit last message ;)

F = m * a

there's an edit time window?

yup
I think it's the same as comment posts

no... it's waaaay shorter than with comments... something about 2 minutes for chat messages (guessed)

7:49 PM
yeah comments = 5 minutes, chat ~1 minute?
something like that

@Vogel612 F = G + H

if you are running out of time, you get a message

y = kx + m

F = ++G;

i = i++; <-- Don't code like this
8
E = mc²

7:52 PM
Equivalent to i = i = i + 1? O.o

@Simon where have you found such madness?

In my own code not so long ago. I did it accidentally, didn't notice it, and then I started to wonder why the value of i didn't change..

OptionalInt optInt = OptionalInt.of(oldOptInt.getValueAsInt()++);

ouch...

OptionalInt? Java 8? I assume it's the same as Nullable in C#

7:54 PM
int?

Yo dawg, I herd you liek to assign i's, so I put an i in your i so you can i while you i.
3

Optional<T> is generic version
new in Java 8, most notably optional.isPresent() and optional.get(), and is immutable

wow and they say C# is weird...

They do

it's better than returning nulls

7:56 PM
I mean, C# does not even run on Linux, right?

@Jamal Technically, the effect of i = i++; is more like temp = i; i++; i = temp;

@rolfl .net itself is platform-independant.

@Mat'sMug Theoretically, yes. What about practically? Are there any .net implementations on Linux?

probably

@SimonAndréForsberg Mono exists

7:58 PM
If all else fails you can always swap to using a VM

@amon You always seem to magically appear on the weirdest occasions, always informing about something that exists or something to think about :)

<-- can't even run a single VM on the laptop he codes with after starting chrome..

@amon I've heard about MonoDroid or what it's called recently, that it's possible to use C# to make iOS apps, you know anything about that too?

@SimonAndréForsberg In that Wikipedia article I linked there's a section about Xamarin which you probably meant. Never used it though. (Actually, I never really used C# at all – it was the 3rd language I tried to learn – hence my familiarity mit Mono – but the docs were a huge turnoff. Then, I discovered Perl :)

Great, I'm exactly in my 3D program where I started this morning
@SimonAndréForsberg How is that AI back to go through? reasonble to read?
" A tsunami is a large wave in an ocean caused by an earthquake or a landslide. Natural tsunamis occur from time to time. You could imagine an artificial tsunami that was made by people, for example, by exploding a bomb in the ocean, yet which is still a real tsunami. One could also imagine fake tsunamis: either artificial, using computer graphics, or natural, for example, a mirage that looks like a tsunami but is not one. "

@skiwi I think it is a good book overall, it provides plenty of examples and exercises and questions for you to think about. I like it. It also uses a quite easy language so that noobs like me can understand things.

good, then I might aswell

You can skip to the middle / end parts of the book if you find the beginning too boring. You can always go back to the beginning again. They refer a lot to some examples and stuff that was introduced in the early chapters.

might be best to read it then

The only bad part about it is that it doesn't focus as much on game AI as I would like it to, but there is a lot of game AI stuff included.

8:15 PM
I'm still trying to think about a practical implementation of AI though

I just don't care much about the delivery-robots and stuff :)

practical*
ah wait

Depends on which kind of AI you would like to have

something fun

@Jamal You could have remove "in Ruby"

8:16 PM
a chess or poker 'bot' may be too difficult to start off with

@skiwi In what environment should the AI be in? What's the context for the AI?
Chess, UTTT, Minesweeper Flags, Rock-Paper-Scissors-(Lizard-Spock)...?

Q: Revising or removing the "Best practices" topicality rule

200_successIn the Help Center, under What topics can I ask about here?, one of the rules currently states: However, if your question is not about a particular piece of code and instead is a generally applicable question about … Best practices in general (that is, it's okay to ask "Does this code...

I don't know @SimonAndréForsberg
i'm trying to figure out something fun
but don't know what
on the other hand, such games are all bound to rules
it would also be interesting to apply AI in something not bound to rules

In that case I assume that you're thinking AI beyond just games?
@200_suc-who-isn't-here Excellent Meta question. Honestly: I don't know! I'll have to think about that one :)

Slow question day means fast meta day

I am guessing so yes

Hm. Looks like site moderators are able to edit that Help Center page by themselves. But I may still have the others weigh in on this before making a final decision (after the community has said something).

8:28 PM
I think it's going to be harder to earn reputation now that there aren't as many Zombies around. Perhaps Code Review will actually suffer from the Fastest Review In The West problem?

@Jamal What are you thinking of editing?

@syb0rg: 200_success is proposing a revision to the Help Center based on the "best practice" rule.

@Jamal Umm... considering the question was asked 17 minutes ago, I think that you shouldn't even think about changing that yet.

@Jamal I'll make a post to that later. Unfortunately, I'm too busy right now.

Yes, I know. Of course I'm not changing it yet (or at all, if this is declined). I was just making sure there was a way for mods to change it themselves.

8:30 PM
But of course, it's @Jamal we're talking about, he sees the word "edit" and he's in paradise.
2

lol
3
Maybe I would, if there was a leftover "thanks" or "hello." ;-)

@skiwi Well, if you're thinking about AIs outside of pure game context, I have no idea how to approach that :) But an important question is still: Which action options should the AI have?
Implementing the option of doing "everything" is kinda hard :)

@SimonAndréForsberg: It looks like there are still plenty of zombies, but it may just be for the languages that aren't reviewed as much here. Still, getting rid of all the zombies will cause much more good than harm.

/me busy flagging @Jamal comments ;-)
Slow question day

there's still a bunch of and questions around...

8:38 PM
@Vogel612 - the Java unanswered queue started at about 150 ....
The remaining 19 are 'hard' ish
though there are a couple.....

@monkey don't you have a query for the unanswered questions distributed by (most popular) tag?

Not at the moment... ;-)
I have a query that helps me flag Jamal ;-)

@rolfl I don't see what good comes out of flagging Jamal's comments? What's the goal?

Deputy

you mean what benefit there is is making the mod process his own "garbage"?

8:42 PM
It's a quick way to find comments which are: please add your code to your question....
Then the question is edited.
the code is added.
the question repened,
and the comment is now obsolete.
And things saying that now-good questions are off-topic... need to be cleaned up.... apparently.
(That's what Jamal said, anyway).
And I was only a small number of flags short of deputy.
(now just 2).

And why the urge for the Deputy badge specifically?

hey...
why the urge for internet points?
the question is probably: Why not?

damn
was about to add that.
well probably it's too

Still in denial

8:49 PM
It's not gonna help...
I am also already caught ;)

I'm gonna go to bed, and hope that Putin doesn't take over the world tonight either... (you never know...)
Night folks, catch you tomorrow.

Goodnight!

8:59 PM
Should I tone it down a bit, then? ;-)

No..... truth is, next up is likely research-assistant....
But, I am also going to slowy work through mis-tagged questions and see if I can pull up generalist.

Yeah, there's also Research Assistant. Direct edits make that a bit faster.

@Jamal :D i want ask new question :D i hope this question not have problem

@Mohammad Simply check against the on-topic checklist, from the [help/on-topic]:

1) Does my question contain code? (Please include the code in the question, not a link to it)
2) Did I write that code?
3) Is it actual code from a project rather than pseudo-code or example code?
4) Do I want the code to be good code, (i.e. not code-golfing, obfuscation, or similar)
5) To the best of my knowledge, does the code work?
6) Do I want feedback about any or all facets of the code?
if the answer is "Yes" to all the above, your question is most likely on-topic :)

I don't do , but that looks ok to me.

I think there's a lack of formatting in that code

I'm just lazing around at home, sort of studying for midterms tomorrow. It's also quite cold here.

Define cold for Texans.
Hey @rolfl

Anything that is not warm. :P

You would die in Minnesota :)

@syb0rg what's up?

@rolfl Just saying hi!

Ahh... of course. just un-suspended the laptop...
I often have a machine that is permanently in the 2nd monitor, so my comings-and-goings are not apparent

@syb0rg: I think I would die anywhere up north. Even the little cold we get here at times is enough to scare me. Heck, my feet are cold, even with socks on!

@syb0rg Edited your answer for clarity — please check that I'm not putting the wrong words in your mouth.
Thanks for your agreement and justification, by the way.

@200_success Looks good to me.
Sure thing. Hopefully the community will agree with us.

I need to go back and re-edit the answer I posted earlier today as well

@Jamal It's 43˚F where you are now!? That's warm!
Yesterday it was -8˚F!

Tell that to my feet. :-P

Hey, in TO we are at +5 Farenheit (-15 C)
(yesterday was -22)
(which is also -8F)
