A: Sudoku Solver in C

LundinCoding style: Never use "magic numbers", as in i<9. Replace the 9 with a constant. And when you do so, notice how a program that can handle variable amounts of numbers, instead of the classic 1-9, isn't far away. Source: CERT DCL06-C The way you write common if statements, without any braces a...

@syb0rg: The permalink is through the timestamp:
@Ludin How do you know the same rules are in MISRA-C:2012 if it is not an open standard? You can't, unless you buy it. Also, looking at some code developed from some prominent C coders, they use a style that is similar to mine. It looks like the world doesn't follow the MISRA standards word-for-word as well. — syb0rg 7 mins ago

having the upvote brigade jump on the comments might feel rather attacking to him
but meh.... he might see through the emotional parts of it and see that people obviously agree with the other side
(bringing torvalds into any argument can easily backfire)
(he has some rather strong, and rather..... questionable... opinions on some things)

@Corbin Examples?

(though that tends towards C++ rather than C)

10:05 PM
@Jamal You can click the timestamp to get the permalink to a comment? Why do you tell me this NOW!?

I don't remember any of the C ones off the top of my head, but basicalyl anytime he talks about C++, he's bashing it for the sake of bashing it
just realized that question is C though, not C++

I don't like being out of stars :(
The vote count now is good. Any more upvotes, and I would feel like I was being attacked.

well, you are being attacked. just by one person, not 5 :)

@Corbin True, haha.

how many stars does each account get per day?
i learned a long time ago, that's it's hard to comment on SE, especially CR, and not feel like you're being attacked. Most review items come down to strongly held beliefs (oddly enough), and it feels like your entire code-related way of life is being attacked
though comments are also what i've learned some of the most from
gotta love a good "uh actually corbin.... you're completely wrong" to realize something :)

10:10 PM
@Corbin 20 stars a day.

and y'all run out that frequently? god, y'all love you some stars.

@Corbin As long as the comment is backed up with (uncontroversial) data, I am willing to admit that I am wrong.

that's part of the problem though. there's no truly uncontroversial data in CR
i mean there is on the very core tenets of code quality, but the more fringe stuff is always split at least 70/30

Sweet, one of my WEC ideas is looking like a viable option!

A: Weekend Challenge #4

syb0rgInternet Bot The challenge is to program an Internet Relay Chat bot: An IRC bot is a set of scripts or an independent program that connects to Internet Relay Chat as a client, and so appears to other IRC users as another user. An IRC bot differs from a regular client in that instead of...

crap only 5 votes left for the day. how did that happen?

10:18 PM
@syb0rg: If that's the case, then I do hope the submissions will abide by SE's wishes.

@Jamal Should reviews include critiques on if they abide by the wishes or not?

Probably not, as that's separate from the code. But I can still have a community manager monitor this if needed. I wouldn't expect too many users to know exactly what SE wouldn't allow.

@Malachi Been taking lessons from @retailcoder?

@Jamal I would need a more concrete description of the acceptable bounds that the bot would be allowed to abide by to edit that in so all users will clearly understand the limits of what they can do. Right now it is very open-ended.

@SimonAndréForsberg been trying, now I am working on an answer for an old vbscript question

10:28 PM
@syb0rg: I would probably have to reference the entire email, then. You could, say, ask about it on Meta, and I can answer that question with all the information I've been given.

Q: What are the StackExchange limits on chatbots?

syb0rgFor weekend-challenge #4, I posted a suggestion about creating an IRC bot, and suggesting that some people could deviate from this and create an automated bot to respond to certain messages in the Code Review chat or any other SE site chat. However, I do not know the full restriction list of cre...

@Jamal There it is.

Answered.

Here is a review I did on my own (old) code. The code I use now is sooo much better than that past code I used.

A: More efficient way to retrieve data from JSON

syb0rgImprovements Check if parseJson() returns an error code. int err = parseJson(&p, json, tokens, TOKEN_NUMBER); if (err) { fprintf(stderr, "Error parsing JSON: %d\n", err); return NULL; } The code initializes all of the structures but ->start and ->end will equal -1, which is wh...

@Jamal I'll accept it in 5 minutes (time limit).

Q: Make this MySQL query more elegant &/or efficient

baixiweiI have created a MySQL query that works, but I feel there must be a better way. The query will be used by a PHP script whose purpose is to assign conditions & subconditions to new participants in an online experiment based on how many times each combination of condition & subcondition was already...

@retailcoder or anyone willing to check out some old VBScript code here is the answer that I just came up with

A: Check if an XML file exists then change URLs in it

MalachiPossible Error? Another thing that I noticed is that you have not Declared objFile in your code?? I am not sure if you meant to do this or not, I haven't tested this code, but I left objFile alone because you do set it twice, for some reason I want to say that you should Dim and then ReDim that ...

All your fault ..... Damn it ... sick!
Can't possibly be the fact I got to bed at 03:30 and was up again at 05:30.

StackExchange is too addicting.

Your first hat is free ;)

@tomdemuyt I'll take a free hat too please.

I've just spent about 45 minutes trying to explain infinity, and that 0.999.... == 1 to two bachelor students in computer science...

@SimonAndréForsberg And their argument was that it wasn't?
One more silver badge and my SE flair badge count would be sooooo round.

Yeah, they tried to argue that it wasn't equal. It's not easy to think of infinity really :)

@SimonAndréForsberg Are you a professor?
:)

@syb0rg Not at all. Far from it. I did study to become a teacher once, and back then I suffered from the same things that those students are now :)
Wtf? I got down-voted! I think that's about the first time an answer of mine got downvoted.

A: Summation of primes takes forever

Simon André ForsbergUnfortunately, I don't speak python so I can't provide any code but there's a couple of things I see that can be improved algorithmically: In isPrime start checking if it's divisible by two, then start check 3 and increase by two on each step. So instead of checking 2,3,4,5,6... you check 2,3,5...

And I didn't even get a hat for it!

11:24 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I would upvote to counter the downvote, but I already upvoted you :/

@syb0rg It's OK, as long as I don't get two more downvotes within the next 35 minutes I'm still rep-capped for today.
I think there's been two or three flags today! What is this? Have CR users suddenly gone bad?

Must be the hats. :-(

Q: Presenting modal dialogs from XIB in Cocoa: best/shortest pattern?

mojubaBelow is my typical WindowController module for presenting a modal dialog (could be settings, asking username/password, etc) loaded from a XIB. It seems a bit too complex for something like this. Any ideas how this can be done better/with less code? Never mind that it's asking for a password, it...

I just realized, if goes on for just a couple more weeks, I'll get [badge:taxonomist] :D

I'm not sure if I'll participate this week, although I think I will. But the week after that, I won't (and can't) participate
@retailcoder Seen my comment on this question? codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/37622/…
