Edit enough old posts, and you'll also earn Archaeologist.
But just don't flood the front page all at once.

@rolfl Unfortunately, this is a busy week for me. The week before Christmas break.
Tons of homework and tests.
And a 22 page marketing plan... blech.

Congratulations, @Malachi, you can now star again.
Congratulations, @retailcoder, you can now vote again.
And so a new day begins!

lol

System compiling .... come here at 00:00 UTC ... and realize that it's been a day without answers.
3

@Jamal Yeah, I accidentally flood the front page on the Raspberry Pi site because I edit new users posts often.
No one else does it, so someone has to.

12:03 AM
If I didn't have to worry about that, I could remove so much crap from old posts.

Yes! We're the top beta site on the hats leaderboard! :D

@Jamal I'm in 3rd? SWEET

12:21 AM
@Community is 10th?!

I just don't get it. Jerk doesn't even wear hats!
waits for MSO post to request the ability for Community to wear a hat

@Jamal Can you look at my submission? I'm not sure it is all completely legal on SE...

@Jamal just flagged Gareth's post on WC#3

@retailcoder: It was already deleted.
@syb0rg: You mean with the SE chat thing?

@Jamal Yeah.

12:30 AM
@syb0rg: I'll check my sources.

retailcoderGotta catch'em all! Write a small program that will send an HTTP GET request to the Pokédex, find all Pokémons and deserialize them into objects, optionally displaying them along with some relevant information. The author of the web API has created a CR account just for this! See comment here.

@SimonAndréForsberg ^^^ you know I had to :)

Oooooooo... me likey (even though I cannot code such a thing)!

@Jamal sure you can!

@Jamal Anything is possible with a little bit of effort.

I'm unfamiliar with that terminology anyway. But... Pokemon. O.O

12:38 AM
o.O
@Jamal put that in your browser:

Interesting.

@Jamal Find anything on the legalities of it?
This is the closest thing I could find:

FWIW, I am abstaining from the next WEC.

@rolfl Why?

I need a holiday... ;-)
I plan to build snowmen.

@rolfl That's actually 22 snowmen. You lied.

@syb0rg well he did say snow*men*

Damn I want that hat!

But seriously, I want that hat.

1:04 AM
Would be nice if you knew how you obtained the secret hats you do get... but then 10 minutes and everybody would know about every secret hat there is...

I know I've earned some hats, hurry up and give them to me SE...

1:26 AM
754 unanswered snowmen ~> and they're melting...

Apparently the Community user is leading the Raspberry Pi site with the most hats...

Lol!

lol

Oh, wait. That's just on the main leaderboard page. I'm really in first :)

Rolf's snowmen don't display on mobile chat :(
(Or they melt already?)
@syb0rg I'd bet anything this Steve Robillard guy has family in Quebec :)

1:33 AM
@retailcoder Probably.

and... one more hat on the way! :)
..and another :)

I now have two answers that are one upvote away from Enlightened (and two others just for Nice Answer). You all have seen all my answers already, right?

@Jamal I did upvote an answer or two of yours, out of votes now (awaiting hat) :)

You whoring? .... @Jamal?

Mods don't rep-whore. Mods rep-demand. And obtain.

1:43 AM
Just keeping the info up-to-date.
Mods don't quite need so much rep, at least on graduated sites. I've never seen an SO mod answer a main site question before.

@retailcoder he 'obtained' ... mea culpa.

2:02 AM
Just mysteriously got +10 on two random answers... coïncidence?

Q: Sudoku Solver in C

syb0rgI had this code lying around, so I figured I would submit this as my first attempt at a weekend-challenge. I would prefer if reviews contained suggestions on how to improve the algorithm, but all suggestions are acceptable. #include <stdio.h> int isAvailable(int puzzle[][9], int row, int col, ...

Don't upvote the last gentle man please.

Yeah, no thanks to those downvotes.

^^ I felt like downvoting the jerk 3rd answerer there, but that would have been revenge-downvoting-by-empathy... not sure what the SE policy is on that..

2:09 AM
Yes, everyone can vote however they like (without setting off the script), but that's a little unfair. Especially for the answerers who were not in that exchange. But I'll be keeping an eye on it in case I need to lock that answer.

I'd keep an eye on the user and his voting schemes

@Jamal I'm fine with that, but what is the reasoning?
@retailcoder Upvote my well-worded comments to his answer :)

this?
I could write a whole answer as to why almost all of these are just wrong or unhelpful. And the audacity you have to down vote the other great (and correct) answers here when you take some of their advice baffles me. — syb0rg 14 hours ago
already upvoted :)

@syb0rg: I was only following along, so I don't know for sure.

@Jamal Oh, I thought you meant lock the question... what does locking an answer do?

2:12 AM
@syb0rg that hat sort of destroys the mean robot picture. I guess it's fine.

@retailcoder Why do you think I want the Robocop hat?

> Audacity or no, some of these are indeed good comments that others left out.
...maybe they didn't want to mention everything since we're trying to get more answers per question?
@syb0rg: It's mainly to stop bad comments from coming in. I'm not sure if it affects voting, though. I'll have to check on that.

@Jamal Would you say my comments were "bad"?

@syb0rg: Maybe a little, but not harsh enough to warrant removal.

@syb0rg some hats (the "daily" ones) seem to be awarded around 12:00:00AM UTC.

@retailcoder Good to know.

Woopie! Got more hats than @rolfl!

I'm coming for you @SimonAndréForsberg

I'm coming for you @syb0rg

By the way, would you say that this question is one of the more ideal types of best-practice questions in terms of what's on-topic here? It appears to be the OP's own code and not pure example code.

A: Is it bad practice to increment more than one variable in a for loop declaration?

rolflOf all the answers so far, I think that Charlie74 is closest to reasoning the same way I do. The for loop consists of three segments: for (initialization; termination; increment) { statement(s) } it is my opinion that only things that affext the termination should be part of the increment...

@Jamal In my opinion, yes.

Hopefully it won't attract non-answers after it receives more and more attention.

@Jamal You could protect it.

I'll give it some time. It's still quite recent.

Hm. I don't see the unicorn hat.

@retailcoder Yeah, I'm working on that.

Q: Repository pattern and unit of work

Shahrooz Jefri ㇱI implemented 2 distinct classes from a generic IRepository interface: public interface IRepository<T> { bool TryGet(Func<T, bool> predicate, out T entity); T Get(Func<T, bool> predicate); int Count(Func<T, bool> predicate = null); List<T> List(Func<T, bool> predicate = null); ...

Is that tag even a language, or something else?

I got tired of the Robocop hat. I think I need to update the photo of myself.

It's C#. Entity-Framework is an [AMAZING] object/relational mapper.

I've just discovered we have a tag. Doesn't seem on-topic, but there's also no tag wiki.

BURN!!

3:18 AM
I'll post it on Meta. Speaking of burnination, have you all decided what to do with ? The Meta post doesn't seem to be receiving more attention.

linq?
I mean link?
lol

@Jamal I didn't like the was the C excerpt was worded, so I changed it.
I also made a pretty small change to the Wiki, but it paves the way for readability in the future.

pretty small? ...I'm struggling with myself to not hit the "too minor" button...

@retailcoder Hear me out.

I approved the excerpt and skipped the wiki

3:23 AM
If all links in future edits were posted like that, it would take a lot of reading and scanning past links to find what you want. This makes it more readable.
Hmm, I'll make another attempt on the Wiki after the excerpt is approved...

I've just posted my burnination request, but I'll wait for StackExchange to post it here.

@Jamal this could be long...

That's true. Oh well, I'll post it anyway.

@Corbin - it is well documented, the worse the question, the more the votes.....

@Corbin the accepted answer needs 10 votes to get @Sim the goldie :)

bad questions get more activity, and spend longer on the 'hot' list... then they hit the newsletter, and get tweeted....
Votes are attracted to views, not quality of quesitons.

yeah
blerh now that i'm pretty much done with class, i should do one of the weekend challanges
but... meh
i'm lazy

4:29 AM
== write a witty title, get the views, get the votes?

@retailcoder that's my theory.... yes.... and on CR you need to get beyond the 'regular' crowd to get more than 5 or 6 votes.

yeah, you have to hit the stackoverflow sidebar with a catchy title to really bring in the votes
there's not 21 active people on CR
(unless i'm way underestimating the number of silent lurkers)

@rolfl 'regular crowd' being those with a [badge:talkative]?

Actually, no... regular crowd for each question is a subset of the people who follow a particular tag.

true

4:34 AM
The whoring in this chat room affects things like the newsletter, I am sure, and the WEC also affects it... (and, in general) has been a great thing for 'visits', I am sure.

I think I'll add to my tags

But I don't think we ae responsible for the >10 upvote questions.

@rolfl I would disagree.

nope

Using my WEC question as an example
Without your review, and the upvotes from people in this chatroom, my question would not have been as popular.

4:35 AM
@syb0rg - your question scored high because of the 'hotness', and that hotness did not come from here ....
You only scored 5 or so upvotes from here... the rest came from elsewhere.

@rolfl But you were the spark.

perhaps because my answer could hav been done better?
creeated cntroversy?

@syb0rg: I have received feedback from SE regarding your chat bot proposal. I can either try to condense it here, or I can forward the email to you.

Well if I were a new user coming to the site, I'd post my first question, and then notice this "Weekend Challenge" thing in the Community Bulletin, and keep following the votes to see what the challenge is going to be, and then post my entry for the heck of seeing what comes out of it, and that tag get visibility++, no?

@rolfl I think your answer was great, but didn't cover every aspect. That allowed for other answers to be posted.

4:37 AM
@Jamal try to condense it here

@Jamal I agree with @retailcoder
Just so everyone can see it.
Somewhat.

Fair enough.

(hears [Ctrl]+[C] keypresses)
([Ctrl+[V])
...

@retailcoder - we are taling different things? I am suggesting that the 'banter' we have in this chat, including the quid-pro-quo voting, has little impact on overall visibility of the questions....
... rather, the activity on the questions makes the questions hang around the top of the active queue of people who pay less frequent, but still regular attention.
If it is not in the front page, it wont get 'votes'.
We keep a smallish set of questions in front of eyes for longer than others, hence get those questions more votes.

true
but each week at least one entry scored like 12+

4:40 AM
Anyway, it is tolerated, as long as it 1.) doesn't annoy other users and 2.) doesn't do things that someone can't normally do with their account. You're advised to keep watch of it, and they can get rid of it if it seems to cause a disturbance. It's also stated that they don't officially support bots in chat.

Probably the most edited entry, or the one with most activity.

@rolfl Keep in mind that for beta sites, it is easier to generate "hotness".

Here;s an experiment, I'll edit an old answer or two of mine, and see what happens ... ;-)

@Jamal I will edit that into my meta post for the WEC then.

@syb0rg good point
@rolfl I'll get there, notice I already upvoted, and move on :)

4:42 AM
Okay. I hope I did get all the important details.

@Jamal fair enough. What's the meaning of don't officially support bots in chat? If a bot zaps a user, they can't be held responsible?

I think it generally means that the devs don't allow them to officially work, but they can if they're interested with what someone is doing.

I guess it can't hurt. And it documents the chat API. I could write a Visual Studio add-in that integrates a discrete SE Chat window, in the spirit of ...

Should I put a link to the SE API in the meta post?

See, I prove my point ..... I edit an old question, and seconds later, Jamal dives in and does an edit... and then it sits around on the top of the pile. - unfortunately everyone knows Jamal is just housecleaning, so they ignore it again ... ;-)

4:51 AM
lol

^^ @rolfl would make it an Eclipse add-in, @simon would make one that extends every single existing IDE, and those that will exist in the future.

Apart from the other comments about how to calculate the input, I would also suggest that your main method is buggy, and not very 'pretty'.
