Since the basic concept behind Fate is that anything in the game is represented by a greater or lesser number of character features (aspects, skills, stress, etc.), all you have to do is make a character card and it does the heavy lifting.
Hmm. I'd be curious to have a look at how they implement this.
But yeah, I can see how that could translate well to some form of Object Model.
Anyway, I'll be going now, but I think I'm going to read the transcripts some time later. Nice to see some AP for FAE.
Good... evening or whatever time it is where you guys are :P
Goot day, effryvun
@Nigralbus Take care. Hope to see you around!
@Problematic Hyu gotz de Jaegertalk too?
Effer since hy found dis hat
Off my game today
Case in point
Want to ask a question on the main site; thought I'd sanity-check it here first: how do I invoke NPC aspects that the players don't know about?
10
Q: Do you have to reveal your NPC's aspects?

FlenyarImportant NPCs may have hidden aspects that PCs are supposed to assess somehow before using them: can such a NPC invoke one of his hidden aspects without the GM revealing it to the players? Example: Let's say that Lenny is a drug-dealer working for a local crime lord that PCs are trying to take...

16:14
Thanks.
Cower before my leet Google-fu!
...and my vague "I think I read something like that already" tingles.
Except his answer is "tell the players"
Which is not what I'm going for
My response is: re-craft the aspect.
One of the lovely things about aspects is that they can imply a great deal.
So don't give the guy a high concept of "Ensouled Vampire," give him something like "Brooding Anti-Hero" and make his trouble "Guilt-ridden By My Violent Past."
Want to add that as an answer so I can unvote it?
Also, +1 for the Buffy reference
Notice that by unpacking the idea I was able to actually strengthen it.
16:21
High Concept: Nice Body, Great Hair, and Fangs
Is the Lenny example a reference I'm not getting?
No idea
Okay, now to change the person.
"A short life, full of consequences. An unfailing intellect, imperturbable temper, great self-reliance and as great modesty, seeing the right clearly, pursuing it steadfastly, he lived and died." - Milton Wright, on his late son Wilbur
That first sentence is amazing.
(I tend to write in the second person singular for these, and then I edit them into first person so they're less... aggressive.)
16:29
@BESW huh. Neat trick.
So instead of "yes, it's often difficult, but if you want to play a secrets game in Fate you have to accept that it's going to be a bit of work," I'll write "yes, it's often difficult, but if I want to play a secrets game in Fate I have to accept that it's going to be a bit of work."
Yeah. I like it.

A: Do you have to reveal your NPC's aspects?

BESWWraith's answer is absolutely right: Fate is designed to be open and transparent, and revealing aspects is crucial to the players' mechanical viability in the narrative. But sometimes the GM wants to hold something back for a dramatic reveal; I empathize. So here's my solution: Re-craft the aspe...

Nice. Also, missed a closing quote.
On "Ensouled Vampire
Got it.
I appreciate that, but you have less than 5% the rep I do.
16:39
Yes. Accept my mite anyway.
Thank you. I am humbled.
...and flattered.
On that topic, I am finding it... difficult to break into the pillar of insight and academic achievement that the RPG.SE users have created
Hm?
I'm discouraged from asking questions or providing answers because 90% of my interactions are with you or Brian and I have neither a PhD or... whatever voodoo gift you possess
I've never been accused of voodoo before.
Here's the key to Q&A: experience. Do you have experience with RPGs?
16:50
Ha, I thought I did.
If you have played RPGs, you can answer questions based on your experience. If you are playing RPGs, you can ask questions based on your experience.
They are just as valid, just as important, and just as crucial to the site's living gestalt as anything Brian or I can say or do.
Because your experience is different from mine, even in this game we enjoy together here, you're needed to enrich the site's content and to temper my contributions with another point of view.
...you could also engage in some conversations with Gareth, Zachiel, and Novian to get a sense of the other ends of the spectrum your experience is needed to temper.
I'll think on that.
If you feel discouraged because you don't think you're as eloquent as Brian or I... I think you're pretty eloquent, and it doesn't matter anyway.
The community will happily help you with any communication skills you may need to cultivate. It's the experience that only you can bring which should spur you to contribute.
(I'd love to see you ask some questions based on this campaign. I'm sure you have them.)
Most of my questions get answered during play. It feels hokey to ask a question that I already know the answer to, even if there's a gap in coverage on the main site.
I felt that way for a while too. Still do, to a certain extent.
But intellectually I recognize that Q&self-A is totally valid in the context of the site.
17:02
I think it comes from watching people on SO and other imprints ask questions formulated to attract a lot of votes.
Ah.
I can guarantee you, a mechanical question about Fate Accelerated is unlikely to gather a great number of votes.
GM-techniques question, sure.
ha, true.
I've no interest in posting in D&D tags, either.
I am almost ashamed of how much of my rep comes from .
Considering I'd been off it for a year or more when I joined the site.
Well, hyu gots da nollij. Hyu gots to share eet
I am still simultaneously irritated and grateful that you forced me to realize that D&D/Pathfinder wasn't the right system for the kinds of stories I want to tell.
I... feel the same way about the site chat people who helped me work through it.
"Damnit, I was having so much fun being ignorant and slightly frustrated!"
17:13
Now I'm on the hunt for a replacement system. FATE is awesome, but sometimes I care about the crunchy mechanical interactions just as much as the story.
DFRPG is good for one of my players who really likes that stuff.
He likes Fate, but he's also a Spreadsheet Raider at heart.
Lucifron, Magmadar, Gehennas and Garr...
DFRPG lets him make up his own crunch to fiddle with.
Have you tried either of the Doctor Who systems, or Burning Wheel/Mouseguard?
I haven't. I was really excited about the possibilities presented by Eclipse Phase, but uh... I get panic attacks when I try to read the sourcebooks.
Wow, why?
17:21
That's the frustrating part, I'm not quite sure. Potentially because some of the core concepts of the game go counter to everything I believe, but it seems deeper than that.
But the possibilities, man. They're endless.
Also, their d100 system is pretty cool

3 hours later…
20:08
@Problematic have you looked at Diaspora? It's FATE with some crunch on top
20:48
@C.Ross I haven't
... but I am now.
21:13
@Problematic I really like it
@C.Ross just purchased it and Spirit of the Century. I'll get back to you on it, thanks.
Bah. Bought it on RPGNow and it's cheaper on Amazon :(
