Not much?

reading transcript
seems you are correct so far

12:35 AM
The FAE NPC pool has been updated to correspond to Fate Core's NPC pool.
It's what I've been doing already.
How Many Fate Points Does the GM Get?
As GM, you don’t need to track fate points for each NPC, but that doesn’t mean you get an unlimited number. Start each scene with a pool of one fate point per PC that’s in the scene. Spend fate points from this pool to invoke aspects (and consequences) against the PCs. When it’s empty, you can’t invoke aspects against them.
How can you increase the size of your pool? When a player compels one of an NPC’s aspects, add the fate point to your pool. If that compel ends the scene, or when an NPC gives in, instead add those fate points to your pool at the sta
I do also sometimes give major boss-type NPCs a feature that adds FP to the pool when they're in the scene.

Cat
Greetings all!

Heyo.

Cat
Back from a great roadtrip today. Just checking in to see if anything else interesting happened while I was gone

We R. boring.

@BESW How did it work before?

Cat
12:46 AM
lol, I don't think so at all.

Wait I guess I can just look at the old PDF.

Cat
Really, I'm the boring one for not being able to join everyone else gaming on the weekends or GMing

@Cat If that makes you boring that makes me boring too. How dare you c(:

Cat
hahaha
point taken

Hobbs, you don't even have a character yet.

Cat
12:48 AM
I guess I should use my spare time tonight to come up with some more interesting aspects for Sin
And rethink how to play her faithful to her mistrust, but more interestingly in game.
Congrats on Trouble, btw, @BESW. I really liked the char concept :)
(if I didn't say that in my rush this morning)

@BESW brb I need to get myself some first aid for that burn

@Cat Thanks! It was an interesting exercise.
The Fate Fractal lets us play characters that normally would be unthinkable.

Cat
I've always heard of people playing familiars, etc, but couldn't envision how it would be done.
I guess I was limited by my DnD background

Heck, a cat's easy in FATE. Next challenge: play an inanimate object.

lol

Cat
12:54 AM
definitely challenging!
like a wizard's staff?
Or warrior's sword?
(magical) sword

Idea: coincidence-warping.

Cat
Hmm?

Rather than influencing my environment through the agency of the object, I'll take aspects that let me influence my environment directly.
Things Just Happen around the object.

Cat
I'm not sure I fully follow, but sure
example?

I could roll to make the wizard just plain drop his staff during combat.
Just "oops, I'm such a butterfingers."

Cat
12:57 AM
I think I will need to understand these aspects better before I follow
they were flying fast and furious between you and Brian this morning

I am going to play as lady luck.

Cat
I didn't quite get what was going on half the time

@BenHardy Not Endal Pain?

Oh I'll play as endal pain

lol

12:58 AM
but the character you're describing is a manifestation of lady lucl.

(And shouldn't it be Endal Payne, or somesuch?)

End all Pain!

Yes, yes.

eh, whatever, names are fluff to be sorted out later XD

That's the Spreadsheet Raider talking.

12:59 AM
it is >.>

@BESW An intelligent sword might get angry and stab its owner in the foot. For this sword, however, through coincidence-warping, his owner just goes absent-minded for a moment and his sword slips out of his hand and embeds itself in his foot. Am I on the right track?

Cat
OK, I get it, mostly.
So you roll with the other char's stats?

no
I think this would be FATE point expendature?
possibly rolling your stats against theirs

It'd be a bit weird and I'd need to work on it with the GM.
For dropping a staff... probably the Create Advantage (aspect) action to place Dropped My Staff on the wizard.
@trogdor, @BenHardy Don't forget film at Hagatna in an hour and a half.

hai

1:06 AM
yep

Cat
It would be a cool role to play if the object was central to the plot/session

I'd like to play an object that wasn't magical, just narratively important.

I am peeling, so new skin for everyone to enjoy this afternoon XD

Cat
lovely :S

lol

1:07 AM
Like how in a mystery film, weird coincidences always seem to happen around the MacGuffin just because it's central to the plot.

not enough suntan lotion?

I can never have enough suntan lotion

Cat
I don't watch enough mysteries, I guess.
I think it would be fun to GM and play an inanimate MacGuffin object simultaneously.
But mine would be magical, since my imagination is limited that way.
Sort of like the one ring that wants to be found

that 1 chef boyardee can that rolls to the kid's house in that one commercial.
but i'd rather be peeling than what I was doing monday....ooozing.

eww

1:12 AM
I'd drink a glass of water, and new ooze would spawn XD it was most interesting.
oh, @BESW I will not be meeting you at your abode, but at the location. will be leaving to run errands short-like.

Cat
gonna log out for bed now. ttyall later :)

later

Bye for now @Cat!

1:33 AM
I will meet you there too
I would be leaving earlier, and driving further, to carpool anyway
we need to be at there at 12 or so?

The film starts at 12:30.

12:30 is start time. so slightly before for popcornery and snackage

And seatage.

mk

Have fun you three :D

1:42 AM
Going to see Star Trek: The Rehash of Khan.

lol

Excellent

alas, did I miss play time?

Seems like.
I might be able to run something short in... about four hours?

hmm, that'd be 02:00 Zulu
I'd doubt I'd be much good :-)
enjoy your movie :-)

2 hours later…
3:52 AM
@Cat that's ungood. Never ever ever be afraid to stop and ask for clarification.

2 hours later…
6:07 AM
@BrianBallsun-Stanton Time limits aren't good for people being comfortable to say "Wait, what?"

6:28 AM
yeah
and we kinda need that
playing over chat

1 hour later…
7:54 AM
also
KHAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!?

2 hours later…
10:17 AM
@trogdor No. [citation needed]

lol

2 hours later…
12:48 PM
@C.Ross If you want a short intro session, I'd be able to start it soon.

@BESW at the office, so no

Okay, so... @Sohum [poke]

if I'm free it'll be 7PM EDT or after

That's... ten hours from now?

1:05 PM
@BESW aye

Okay, I'd be available around 9 or 10pm your time, then.

Cat
1:20 PM
@BrianBallsun-Stanton I will ask for clarification when it seems to make more of a difference to the play without unnecessarily delaying a time-limited game

@Cat no, your priorities are wrong. Always ask for clarification (well, if I'm running). This is a low-stress learning game. If we rush, we're not learning.

Cat
Fair enough ;)

Agreed.
Don't assume we know what we're doing either; everyone's new to this system.

Cat
Sometimes I learn by watching though :)

certainly, but ask. I guarentee you you're not the only one who's wondering.

Cat
1:23 PM
Sure.

wait for a lull or use a backchannel if you're not in the game
but... ask!

Cat
So, what's new with you folks this morning?

Quite often in that session I was definitely pushing the boundaries.

Cat
(evening)

@BESW yeah, and when I'm not working at 11 pm, we should chat.

1:24 PM
Star Trek: The Rehash of Khan would've been fine on its own, but did itself no favors by reminding us constantly of a much better film.

Cat
Haven't seen the original, so I enjoyed it

Cumberbatch is great, but he's no Montalban and it was a mistake to ask him to try--though he tries valiantly indeed. Three simple changes to the script, two of them relatively minor, would've made the story much better and let it be its own story, without making it (much) less of a tribute to the previous work.

cough

@Cat That's a plot hole large enough to fire 72 photon torpedoes through.

Cat
lol
OK, glad I just wasn't being dense

1:27 PM
But yeah, try to avoid the actual spoilers.
If you want to be specific, we can move to the scifi chat.
They're less worried about spoilers.

Cat
Sorry ...

That... actually sounds like something someone would say when they want to give the impression that they're spoiling, but they're just being ridiculous.

Cat
I figured it was in the original movie as well, not having seen it

@Cat The original movie.... do you have Netflix? It streams now.

Cat
My bf does. I'll check out the original when GoT is over.

1:29 PM
Actually, the best thing would be to go back to TOS and watch the original episode first.

He first showed up in the Original Series episode Space Seed, as a single-episode character.
@Problematic That's right up there with the Seal of Rasillon.
The film The Wrath of Khan continues the story from Space Seed; the TV episode isn't necessary to understand the film at all, but it's interesting to see them together.
You'll find that very little is similar to Into Darkness, except the few bits that are almost identical... sigh.

Cat
I was actually a little disappointed with Benedict's performance, considering his work on Sherlock.
I figure he would do a bit better than he did - may have been the material he was given to work with

He's... not Khan. He was horribly miscast.

Cat
I was really excited when I found out he'd be the villain. But he was just sort of "average"
But he was probably chained by trying to be a character that was already part of the canon.
(or however you say that)

1:37 PM
The part didn't seem to be written for him, and he was cast based on his star power rather than his suitability for the role.

Cat
Not saying he did a bad job, just not as good as I expected
I thought he might burn it up

I suspect he may also have been forbidden from upstaging the main stars.

Cat
Probably very true.

The original Khan, in the film, had a great deal to work with (aside from being Ricardo freaking Montalban. He had past chemistry with Kirk, and he had some very focused goals with a strong sense of narrative inevitability.

Cat
Anyway, I hope Benedict gets cast to play another evil guy unfettered somewhere ... the idea fascinates me.
Just didn't work in this setting.

1:40 PM
Khan's character is strongly influenced by Paradise Lost and Moby Dick, two books that were nearly all he had to read for many years in his backstory. He quotes them, accurately and inaccurately, and casts himself as Captain Ahab with Kirk as his white wale.

Cat
I'm definitely a Cumberb*tch!

@BESW "Don't upstage the main cast." "That's all you say to the co-stars? How?" produces gun "Oh dull."

Cat
lol
Funny, I would have considered him as part of the main cast considering his role as the villain

@Cat No, the franchise cast.

Cat
yeah, I get that. But you need great villains to make great stories

1:43 PM
Cummerbund was a one-off, he won't be back, so he couldn't be allowed to upstage the money-makers.

Cat
Sigh

Oh Hollywood.

Cat
I take it you're not a fan? ;)

Exactly.
I like Cucumberbunch, I just think he's letting himself get into a rut.

blink

Cat
1:44 PM
Anyway, I have to admit that I'm happy there will likely be more trek movies, even if this wasn't all it could have been
Rut? He's done Sherlock, the hobbit, and Trek ... what else?

Yeah, The Rehash of Khan wasn't a bad movie by any means. Definitely enjoyable.

Cat
I think it's a rut with so few works yet ...

Whoop, more vomit. Gotta go.

Cat
literally?
Hope you're nearing the end, @Problematic

He's done a TON of other stuff, but after Sherlock he's not getting offers that take advantage of his range.

Cat
1:46 PM
OK, I've only followed him since Sherlock
but they are big league rolls

He's played Stephen Hawking. He was in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Cat
I think there will be more diversification in the works now that these are out of the way
I guess he does "brilliance" well, lol

I hope so, because he's very good at being things other than "brilliant, moody, sinister, cool."
He does a great nerd, actually.

Cat
that I can believe too

But in the public eye, he's Suave and Cunning and those are the big roles he's getting... even when it's not the right kind of Suave and Cunning.

Cat
1:54 PM
That's a fine line that probably isn't evident to all casting directors

Then they're lousy casting directors. [grin]

Cat
I don't think there are that many suave/cunning personalties out there these days.

Granted, I think that a really good director could've made Crinkleback into Khan.

Cat
I'm trying to picture who I might cast instead
Suggestions?

Well, there's Wrath Khan and there's Darkness Khan.
They need very different acting talents.
Darkness Khan, as written, had little focus, and no chemistry with Kirk. Nothing was personal between them; Khan's story was with... someone(s) else.

Cat
1:57 PM
I'm honestly stuck on evil mastermind (believable ones) types.
lol, except for Sherlock's Moriarty ;)

So you need to find someone who can sell a character who is desperate but without focus: he has desires but no real plan to achieve them; he's acting intelligently but largely randomly.

Cat
The dexter guy?
I haven't seen his work but many are fans.

Hmm. He could do it. I've seen him in a couple of other things too, and he's got a good range.
Rufus Sewell?
Rufus is good at smouldering, and he can convey a lot with just very small amounts of facial and body language, so he could work around the script to inhabit the role.

Cat
He's got the right dark kirk vibe too
they seem like they

See, if I were trying to fix the film I wouldn't have Khan be in it at all.

Cat
2:03 PM
would be good nemeses

The whole idea of the New Trek is "the same old stories are different now."

Cat
I think the Khan throwback was fun, even if it didn't work
But you'd want to select some of the most popular old stories

So have the same conceit: supermen from the 1990s eugenics wars, including Khan, are found war criminals and tossed frozen into space. One of them is woken up in Kirk's time.
...but have someone other than Khan be the one who wakes up. Same old story, different now.

Cat
I honestly think people would then be complaining "why did they take that story and not take KHHHAAAAN?!?!

You can have the Wrath ideas floating around, but now you have your own villain instead of trying to revive someone else's.

Cat
2:06 PM
Anyway, not having seen Wrath save a few clips, I can't say much
I just liked the movie.

Mmm. I'd also make two fairly major changes to how the movie ended, changing one scene from the original more and taking a bigger risk on the payoff of it by leaving it hanging at the end of the film to resolve in the next one.
Basically, I would've made the film less like Wrath in the details and more like Wrath in the themes and ideas.
(Darkness had too many themes, none of which were developed very deeply and they didn't support each other very well: sacrifice, family, revenge, justice, grief, all glossed over too fast. Wrath had... two themes, basically, and they supported each other well: age and revenge.)
Darkness was a fun movie, but it was riding on the coattails of a smart movie and did itself no favors by constantly reminding us of that.

3 hours later…
5:25 PM
Bleh, sorry, am around now
but I assume your times have gone weird

6 hours later…
11:08 PM
hello room

Cat
Hey @C.Ross

@Cat hi, long time no chat

Cat
True. My job is crimping my style
lol
Are you playing FAE as well?

@Cat trying to
scheduling issues

Cat
Know that feeling. Once again, the job interferes :P
Who's your charrie?
Or have you made one yet?

11:16 PM

Cat
Awesome

Heyo. Heading out for a meeting, but I should be able to run something for someone in 3-4 hours.

Cat
If it's 3, I'll be there. 4 might be a bit late

@BESW have fun

Cat
definitely!

11:17 PM
22:00 Zulu might even be a little late for me, we'll see

Yeah, sorry.

life happens, no worries

Cat
No worries
So, has Lord Northface been on any adventures in the enchanted forest yet?

@Cat nope
he was told to seek the old hermit for a secret about his mother

Cat
Well, if i understood the game better (aka had studied the rules I was sent) I'd offer to run a session for you.
As it is, I barely grasp the mechanics myself
I guess we're seeking the same hermit
I suspect we'll run into each other

11:19 PM
ah, perhaps

Cat
which would benefit me, of course, being a street rat with few defences against the wiley hermit

bbl

Cat
sure, ttyl

11:32 PM
@Cat wouldn't it benefit everyone?
Things work for the best if we can live in peace after all

Cat
@C.Ross True enough!
