I would just view is like this: Only in the thermodynamic limit we have sharp phrase boundaries and transitions, as you go to finite/real systems, those boundaries simply become fuzzy and the singularities merely sharp peaks (or whether else would give the singularity in the limit). You can still usefully identify the "core" of the phases by looking at the limit, you just need to let go of the idea that their boundaries are quite as sharply defined as in the limit
