I've seen some videos of universities like Stanford etc... posting their lectures online for free. Is this legit and why do they do that?
Me too! I hope its because they are ... and want something thats good for all kinda thing ... (Maybe I'm naive)
*they are nice
Yes that's true, whoever told you, JEE is to filter students
@RyanUnger Tell me how can I answer your questions?
I don't know
I can tell you an answer if I see it
But I don't a priori know what the answer is so it's hard for me to say
@NovaliumCompany those are samples, not full lectures
@AbhasKumarSinha Oh got it.
But srsly tho, why isn't there a legit neuroscience forum
16:16
@JohnRennie If you know - What are the powers of Royal Family in Politics? If there's a monarchy already, the from which sense of Logic, British is Democratic State?
@NovaliumCompany Make it
@AbhasKumarSinha effectively none. They are just tourist attractions.
@JohnRennie hahahaha, sorry, but as far I've read, they have supreme powers, they can overturn the decision of Judiciary and can form laws without Concent of someone
@AbhasKumarSinha I forget what the Queen's theoretical powers are, but in practice the only power she really has is to dissolve parliament.
@JohnRennie If I'm not wrong, she also appoints the Prime minister?
@AbhasKumarSinha in theory yes, in practice no.
16:23
@JohnRennie If there is no role of Queen there, then why people throw huge taxes and stuff? Shouldn't they ammend and remove the royal family out of power?
I mean purely Democratic is recognition in the world and is makes a sense of stability among people
The Queen doesn't cost us very much and people regard her as a symbol of the British nation. So on balance people are happy for the royal family to stay as they are.
Ah okay, I got they are tourist attractions.... That's the funniest part XD
I've got a 20 unit big coin which is used in UK probably which has ribbon like decoration and also has queen on other side, seems very old
True though. I mean, we have the Queen who is polite, dignified and in every way a noble lady. The US has ... Donald Trump. Which would you choose?
Technically she's Queen of Canada too; but we don't even get the direct benefits of tourism. As far as I'm aware, the role is basically entirely symbolic. Like most people in Canada (myself included), don't really understand how the queen plays into anything; it never seems to have any effect on any politics.
@AbhasKumarSinha U readin my thought ha?
16:27
@JMac Likewise Australia.
@JohnRennie present queen is good, but the history of royal family and their deeds are embarrassment for Queen.
@NovaliumCompany didn't got that
Yeah, the commonwealth is actually pretty big, it just doesn't seem to have a tangible effect on anything (which is a positive IMO; I don't have a real problem with ceremonial pretense that goes along with the democratic system)
@JMac I suspect changing the constitution to remove the Queen as the head of state would be a divisive issue and your leaders have decided it doesn't really matter and isn't worth the fuss it would cause.
@JohnRennie Definitely Donald trump, because he has powers, but after your thoughts, it seems the queen is very kind and exercises less powers
Hi, everybody.
16:30
That would be my view too. I don't especially approve of the British monarchy, but I don't care enough to make a big fuss about it.
@JohnRennie Is the British monarchy politically important?
@JohnRennie If she is nothing more than Tourist Attractions, I'd support Queen, at least it's worth
@DanielSank no
So state funded celebrity?
@DanielSank see the thread starting here. Basically, no.
@DanielSank yes, no problems
@DanielSank She is there to preserve British history and culture
@JohnRennie Do you miss Mrs. May Theresa as PM?
16:32
@JohnRennie As far as anything goes, it doesn't really seem beneficial to break off from it. I don't know what benefits we get from it; but I don't think it takes anything away either. It seems like it's just a cultural heritage thing, which I'm totally fine with, especially since it doesn't prevent us from celebrating other cultural heritages. It doesn't hurt anyone, and we get a fancy staff for someone in parliament to carry, so net win I'd say.
@JMac my point
@JMac that's pretty much the way Brits look at it too :-)
@AbhasKumarSinha I was thinking about the thing you offered above too.
@NovaliumCompany sorry, didn't get that
What?
Link please
@AbhasKumarSinha I was complaining that there isnt a solid neuroscience forum for people to learn and ask questions and you told me to make one. I was thinking of making o e too.
16:42
@NovaliumCompany You mean Neuroscience Forum?
@NovaliumCompany Let's go to Area 51 for dat
Are you okay with SE like Forum?
That's a QA site, but technically a Forum
psychology.stackexchange.com There's already a psychology and neuroscience SE site in beta.
@JMac ah, yes there's it is
@NovaliumCompany note that
@JohnRennie what is the difference between the role played by the queen in Australia as compared to South Africa?
@skullpetrol I don't know to be honest. Does the Queen have any role in South Africa? I would have guessed not.
@skullpetrol SA is independent of British
16:54
right, right
@skullpetrol Australia? There's only queen in Britain and not in Australia
If a website is said to be a forum, that means it's a place where peoe discuss about the topic and also ask and answer questions? Is that the definition of a forum?
There are although kings in China
@AbhasKumarSinha canada too
@NovaliumCompany forum is a place to solve problems with discussion and it includes the opinion of people
@skullpetrol might be, I'm not well aware of Canadian Constitution and politics
16:56
@AbhasKumarSinha Does it also include people asking questions and others answering?
Of course
Yes @NovaliumCompany
@AbhasKumarSinha The Queen of Britain is also Queen of Australia, and Queen of Canada, etc.
@AbhasKumarSinha cool
I'll go now guys, cya later
But there might be some differences in questions, they can include questions that can be discussed.
Bye
:)
16:58
@JMac but not India, it's independent now
XD
@AbhasKumarSinha ... no; but you did say there was no Queen of Australia, and that is incorrect.
@JMac where I said, please show me
Also, I've no idea about Australian Constitution, and working of Constitutional Bodies.
I know basically China UK US India SA
Her role in Canada is different than Australia, no?

@skullpetrol Australia? There's only queen in Britain and not in Australia
@JMac I straight denied that there's no queen residing in Australia
@skullpetrol From the perspective of National Flags, and the motivation of design, yes, they have same, but not sure about in deep sense.
There's no official papers regarding that
17:05
@AbhasKumarSinha That wording is horrible then. The Queen of Austrailia is usually in Britain; but not only in Britain. The Queen is free to move around.
@JMac No, International Laws must be followed by queen too, in case she wants to move, failing to do do have severe consequences
Interestingly, India was never Officially under British
There's no official papers regarding that
I must warn you all that I'm not an expert here, the things here are absolutely those Which I've read in school
that^ is my point, there are no official papers
The people are left guessing.
@skullpetrol There are in British Constitution
Even Britain is split up between Scotland, Wales,Ireland, etc.
@JMac Passport Laws are always there which have authority over the external Affairs Department of Government of that country. A queen can't move to Australia without those laws (I'm pretty sure that Australia must have those)
@AbhasKumarSinha I'm saying the wording is bad. "There's only queen in Britain and not in Australia" doesn't mean the same thing as "The Queen only resides in Britain and not in Australia". Plus, the Queen does have places to stay when visiting her other territories that she runs.
It's safe to say that no country is going to try and prevent her from entering their country on that basis alone, since that would be a major diplomatic incident which no one will risk for a mere formality.
@AbhasKumarSinha Plus you realize that the Queen in this case is the sovereign authority anyways; pretty sure of anyone she is the only one who could literally make the rules.
It looks like she doesn't even know how to drive a car :P

@JohnRennie I resemble that remark.
But since is predates popular access to the internet (much less the existence of social media) there is little record of any of it. ::dry washes hands and cackles::
I mean, there are some school year-books out that that record the odd fashion atrocity, but I was sufficiently asocial that none of the other things I did got recorded.

Do people really think that physics.stackexchange.com/q/484543/50583 is different from physics.stackexchange.com/q/126512/50583 in any meaningful sense? Several people commented the link to the latter, but no one cast a duplicate vote.
@ACuriousMind I noticed that when I skimmed it earlier but got distracted by something else and never came back to really look. I've VTC'd as a dupe; I also find it strange that no one else felt it was close enough. Seems functionally identical to me.

Q: What, really, is a good question?

QuantumnessSo it seems like the general consensus of a "good" question is one that includes adequate research/reasoning to provide context for/justify the question being asked, and if applicable cites sources for research and further reading, outlined on the help page Yet, there are multiple questions w...

20:18
hola
@ACuriousMind have you ever heard of PID controllers?
@ACuriousMind regarding the questions you brought up, I don't really get what "rigid" means. If the question is about empty space, then I think your answer probably is what the person is looking for.
Otherwise, it feels like the person is asking about something very vague
"rigidity" which i feel is like covered by like
the definition of a rigid body
and a basic understanding of the different phases of matter, i.e. solid liquid gas plasma
@StanShunpike I can't really think of a meaning of rigid for which the answer would be substantially different

Q: If atoms are mostly empty space, why doesn't light pass through everything?

TdonutAtoms are mostly empty space, and although I now understand why matter doesn't pass through other matter, why don't photons pass through the empty space of the atoms? Is it the same sort of idea as matter passing through other matter?

this question looks even closer to the answer you gave
frankly all three sound similar in nature
I think if the question you mentioned didn't have the word rigid
it would seem like the exact same question
@StanShunpike I'd see more of a difference there because the solidity of matter and its transparency are different things with different causes. Consider glass, which is solid but transparent.
The explanation of why matter is solid does not explain why it is often opaque, and vice versa.
Gotta look at them band gaps

Need to read to be sure. That it agrees with standard formulation means it might be much less exciting that the title suggests
but still, being able to anticipate a jump is useful
