knock knock
whats up
just wanted to bitch about moderator actions
not much
any moderator in particular?
I think we both know who I'm talking about
but to be clear, I mean Noldorin
Well, I'm just another user. But I do think we are being a little harsh on questions in general...
but I don't think it's right of noldorin to go against a community vote =/
02:12
Not "we". My efforts since I joined the site have been to give people broad leeway in asking and answering questions
and yes. it is not. i'm having an interesting exchange with noldorin in the comments thread of that question
by "we" I mean "the site"
hm
I'll take a look
by "we" I mean the non-moderators. I think things will change once we have elections
I hope so
02:15
The first batch was appointed on an ad hoc basis, since the site was in its infancy. Some, not all, of these appointees are exemplary.
I'm not sure if the community is large enough for the elections to matter
I can barely think of a dozen users I see frequently around here
that is all you need to have a consensus
though i haven't analyzed an ising-model with 12 voters to confirm this ;)
but if you have 12 prople voting wisely
and 100 voting blindly...
the result will mostly be random :-)
02:17
Nope. The reasons elections work is because the noise on the left cancels the noise on the right, leaving the sensible middle
Assuming no one party has an outsize influence
Lets hope so :-)
Let us indeed. Hope and Change. lol
yeah
he really shouldn't have said that
Load. Aim at your own foot. Fire.
=/
whenever these elections happen
just remember to link to that question
02:27
I don't think that will be necessary
Physicists have robust memories
in any case. on to the next topic of conversation
you're from brazil? and is your name really bruce connor?
of course you don't have to answer either one of those. its just that I wish I could be in Brazil and your name sounds really cool - like something from terminator 2 ;)
:)
Yes I am
but no it's not
It's just a nick left over from my gaming history
lol. i see
and I assume your name is not space_cadet ;-)
lol
02:36
hah. no of course not
well i have to peace out for now. so ... peace, out

@BruceConnor "I completely agree that the asker was just another ask-and-run user" - that may be precisely because his question was closed for no real good reason IMHO. That wouldn't keep me around it that is what happened to me. We're on the same page about the validity of the question, for certain.
I meant "if that is what happened to me"

Well, concerning the question I think that it deserves closing for the mentioned reasons. Also I think that all the fuss around it is purely populistic (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populism). But I completely disagree that moderator can close it without any explanations even after it was reopened by voting.

@Kostya Yeah, it is OK if the community (as in, 5 different people) recloses a reopened question. But a moderator really shouldn't reclose it by himself. =/
I'll leave it alone for now. I'm not bothered that people disagree with me, people can vote to close all they want. But when a mod closes the same question twice, I think he's taking it personally (IMHO).
And there's nothing wrong with the first time he closed. Mods are supposed to act quick on the early stages of the site, so they are forced to judge in a matter of minutes. But closing it a second time after it was opened by community vote, that's just stubborness.
11:42
@BruceConnor but that question though is not very valuable (I think it should be closed, but not like that)
@skI was defending it cause I thought it was interesting (and not badly formulated)
but I can see many people think it should be closed
and I wouldn't mind if people voted to close
You're right, it just wasn't closed the right way...
(I meant @Sklivvz)
