@heather that is correct
so can I sue you

@0celo7 wat?
um...i've heard you use profanity before in here.

you think you did
so maybe you can use an insanity plea

10:15 PM
@heather lol

right?
this is hilarious =P

I didn't lose my nail clippers

@Danu What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know [etc]
anyway i'm done giving examples.

Why is $g_{ab} = \varepsilon_{AB} \varepsilon_{A'B'}$, Penrose
(Got it!)
(Penrose is amazing)

@bolbteppa that does not make sense index wise
but it is explained in Wald

10:28 PM
Where

chapter 13

Similar to Penrose, both a bit iffy

@heather Depends on exactly which part you were referring to. We don't have any rules that prohibit using swear words outright, if that's what you meant, but using them does often tend to push a statement a little closer to violating "be nice" than it otherwise would be.

@bolbteppa you saying some is a bit iffy must mean it's basically a loose appendage flailing in a storm

(Maybe we should discuss this in the other room, if there is any more to discuss about it)

10:35 PM
@heather Well, yes, the part about inappropriate language is still covered by the Be Nice policy. Once again, the issue as such is not profanity, but being rude to other users. But the rules are not different for you than for anyone else. Please don't think that it's different for you than for anyone else.

oh, yeah, that's not what I meant by that comment - I'll move over to the other room.

wow, quite the saga/ drama in here lately. rats, missed the LHV citations in the chat session, although brief. did have a reaction to ACMs stmt.

@ACuriousMind what did I say that implied I thought it was different? I understand I need to Be Nice just like anyone else.
@vzn "LHV"?

@heather an acronym sometimes thrown around wrt bell theory. Local Hidden Variables. re ACM...
6 hours ago, by ACuriousMind
@BalarkaSen Essentially a theory that declares that all the results of measurement exist prior to measurement, contrary to the standard interpretation of QM where the results only exist as a probability distribution prior to measurement.
@ACuriousMind re tricky language "prior to measurement," there are some more exotic LHV theories that allow for a lot of unexpected stuff that is not exactly deterministic (in the measurements). they allow some degree of randomness but still have local hidden variables. actually a simple example would be eg a slot machine with a PRNG etc... less trivially, the other stuff circulating in physics research lately is pilot wave hydrodynamics.

@heather You said "I'm a kid". I don't want you to feel any less because of that. That you may be a "kid" is utterly irrelevant in the context of SE. If you don't feel that that's an issue, just continue as before.

10:50 PM
@ACuriousMind ah, I see. But okay thanks, I don't think it's really an issue.

@ACuriousMind I call BS. Your baseball bat thingie fails when @heather is a 35 year old war maiden.

uh...35 year old war maiden? what picture do you have in your head?

I wanted to say something else but it was inappropriate.

@0celo7 It doesn't matter. You should also take to me as if I were a 13 year old with their parents right next to you.

And I'm not fixing to be banned again, at least for a week.
@ACuriousMind Well then. Our phone sex just got a whole lot more awkward.

10:52 PM
@0celo7 uh... that's pushing it

but it was funny

@0celo7 Don't push it. It's funny but it's also somewhat inappropriate, and had you made that statement to a random user I'd hav deleted it without hesitation. This is what I meant by "we view the evolution of room culture with concern".

@0celo7 If $g_{ab} = \varepsilon_{AB} \varepsilon_{A'B'}$ then I guess $1 = g_{00} = \varepsilon_{12} \varepsilon_{12} = 1 \cdot 1$, $-1 = g_{11} = \varepsilon_{12} \varepsilon_{21} = 1 \cdot (-1),$, $-1 = g_{22} = \varepsilon_{21} \varepsilon_{12} = -1 \cdot 1$ but $g_{33} = \varepsilon_{21} \varepsilon_{21} = - 1 \cdot - 1 = 1 \neq - 1$?

@bolbteppa ask me in two hours pls

I understand that you don't mean any harm. But chat is public, and I worry about the signal that such conversations send to other readers/listeners.

10:55 PM
I have an application I have to submit my midnight and don't have wald on me

Ok cool, @ me

@ACuriousMind I don't understand that last line
Just delete the message if it's an issue
But I think the concept of phone sex is PG-13

@0celo7 well, the goal is to keep people from posting inappropriate messages in the first place. If we just delete the messages, that's not as useful as telling people that they're inappropriate, so those people can learn not to post such things in the future.

@0celo7 I hope so. Otherwise Timmy's parents are gonna be mad with me.

@AccidentalFourierTransform spicy

11:03 PM
@heather BTW, I think you did a great job yesterday in the meta chat. You had a very mature debate with DZ and ACM. I didnt expect that from a 14 yo person :-)

@DavidZ Well, all I got from this is that phone sex is off limits. You should have a list of things that are off limits

@0celo7 You can keep a list yourself. Put phone sex on the list.

@0celo7 Well, I could do that. But that would just be what has been repeatedly been criticized: Exercising my moderator powers without any regard for how it will be perceived. I think that message "skirts the line". It's not offensive in its own right, but it sets a bad precedent for what tone of message is common here. I'd much rather you agree that it's maybe not what we want random onlookers to see than just delete it.

Sorry, I won't agree because I don't see anything wrong with it.

@0celo7 Personally, I'm ambivalent as to whether you agree or not, as long as you don't make a habit of posting messages like that

11:08 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform thank you =)

BTW @ACuriousMind @DavidZ feel free to delete my messages whenever you find them inappropriate. I will jokingly complain but it's OK for me.

The lengths some posters go to in order to insert unnecessary formatting is kind of amazing. Exhibit A.

@heather in the next moderator election, you have my vote ;-)

@AccidentalFourierTransform eh... thanks, I guess? But if we get to the point of deleting messages, we're beyond caring whether the poster thinks it's okay.

@AccidentalFourierTransform huh, you think I'd have a shot?

11:10 PM
@0celo7 That's what I said, and I was told by Shog and ACM that this is a bad idea.

@DanielSank wow

@heather Did you look at the source?

@DanielSank it seems like it'd be clearer for everyone involved.
@DanielSank no, looking

@heather Reasonable objects have been laid out. It's hard to say, I think.

@DavidZ I know. I was referring to ACM's comment " But that would just be what has been repeatedly been criticized". I won't complain about my messages being deleted, and nobody else should.

11:11 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform I'd also much rather that you don't post messages worthy of deletion in the first place ;) If you're kinda on the fence, that's...fine, sometimes, but don't post things you expect to be deleted.

@DavidZ Personally, I wasn't talking to you.

i think someone can mod hammer this duplicate:
0

In QFT particles are considered as point-particles. Does this assumption lead to the renormalization procedures?

it's rather obvious (same person, etc, etc)

@AccidentalFourierTransform ah, I see. I don't know if I'd say that. Complaining isn't the worst thing, as long as it's not done disruptively.

@ACuriousMind my joke about math from the other day was funny >_>

<insert disruptive compaint>
::hides::

11:13 PM
@heather got it

thanks @DavidZ
@DanielSank you mean ::shoots cloud of ink and swims back to den::

@AccidentalFourierTransform I'm not referring to any particular post, just making general statements
'(I don't know which post you're referring to)

CAN I POST IT AGAIN?

ugh, why such a few number of votes allowed in the close vote queue =(
that 7 is bothering me

@0celo7 Jesus
You make it sound sinful

11:23 PM
@heather lol
I am sorry I just couldn't stop lol-ing at that

@heather LMAO

0celo merely wouldn't admit he's used profanity in the chat before.

@heather It's just a funny message I missed
It's part of a meme

@heather that's 0celo7 for ya

11:26 PM
@heather Yep. That.

god there's too many messages in the transcript I want to lol at

c'mon HNQ, take your job seriously!

11:45 PM
@SirCumference because it is
you don't even need to know what a tensor is to define a metric
@BalarkaSen what is funny about it?
@heather Because I haven't.

@ACuriousMind-" peer review is off-topic here." doesn't apply anymore. By the way, for a curious mind, you do not ask very many questions. ;-) — descheleschilder 22 mins ago

...that doesn't make any sense

lel

@0celo7 No offense, but right now you sound like the kind of guy who corrects professors

@SirCumference I do correct them when they are wrong

11:47 PM
@0celo7 An inner product is a tensor. What's so hard about it?

@0celo7 You really shouldn't

lol

@0celo7 Glad there's an "lol", I actually thought you were serious...

@SirCumference Now there is an algebra prof at my school who hates me
But I think the rest are fine

@0celo7 ._.

11:49 PM
I only corrected him once
but that's not why he hates me

Ok, then why?

I gave him a terrible review at the end of the semester

@0celo7 and he knew it was you?

and suggested he fail more students in order to have a class actually worth taking
@SirCumference I got the highest grade on the miderm by 24 points, and I said it was trivial in the review. So yeah, he knew.

I always give profs a good review

11:52 PM
also, he signed it

Even if I don't like their class

@0celo7 What's a Jacobi field?

You suck
~Revolver J. 0celo7

you can always drop a bag of crap on fire by his door, with your name attached
at least, thats how I do it

11:54 PM
@BalarkaSen It's a vector field satisfying a certain ODE

That's not very illuminating

But that's not what you want to know I bet
Yeah
@BalarkaSen A Jacobi field measures the rate of spread of geodesics, roughly
If you take two "infnitesimally close" geodesics, and then follow them along their paths, then the "difference" is a Jacobi field

I see, that matches up with what I heard.

and whats a Ricci flow?

@AccidentalFourierTransform a heat-like equation for the metric
it tends to smooth out metrics

11:57 PM
and what are they useful for?

used to obtain a constant curvature manifold in an asymptotic sense
@AccidentalFourierTransform sphere theorems, poincare conjectures

@AccidentalFourierTransform For proving the Poincare conjecture and getting a million dollar and then refusing it
