@vzn what does that mean
italics means an insult

As other people have commented, the first and last sentences of this answer are flat-out incorrect. Trust at your own risk. — tparker 3 hours ago

user54412
:( There are about 20 people in the world who do this sort of thing, and I'm one of them. But I guess on the internet everyone is an expert.

@ChrisWhite Today someone told me calculators are useless. I feel your pain
Huh, that tparker goes to UCSB a as a grad student

user54412
I really don't get people's response to that movie. Everyone kept talking about it being a science documentary, then I eventually saw it, and it was exactly what Nolan claimed it to be: a fictional love story where science is elevated to a character. Writing poetry about science isn't itself scientific.

@ChrisWhite I didn't like that movie to be honest. I'm afraid of black holes
And that part when some physics jesus is helping them out with the dude stuck on a magic box is like what the fuck is going on

@BernardMeurer did you listen to DJ Khaled's new joint yet

3:32 AM
@0celo7 I don't listen to that stuff

user54412
@BernardMeurer that might be the most awesome review I've heard of it

@BernardMeurer He memes it up tho

@ChrisWhite Glad you liked my description hahaha

Don't ever play yourself. - DJ Khaled.

@0celo7 He is a meme

3:34 AM
@BernardMeurer They don't want me to have another anthem. So I made sure I got another anthem. - DJ Khaled.

@0celo7 DJ Khaled wrote the Interstellar script

Proof?
I might have to watch this movie now

The lack of clear sense is a trademark

Uh, what's hard to understand about Khaled?
How many times is pretty clear.
I should listen to it
I haven't today yet

Is it really? Or are we just not seeing what he really means?

3:37 AM
Walkin from side to side~~~
@BernardMeurer lol, look at these rhyming skills

@BernardMeurer also consider
Take it home and let it bubble that's the double up
If you get in trouble that just mean you f**king up
It’s a cold World I need a bird to cuddle up
I call the plays, motherf**ker huddle up

4:08 AM
@JohnRennie heyyy
Could you please delete the post to which Bernardo said wow

thanks
@JohnRennie ...
I take that back

Oh balls, sorry. Let me search again for "wow".
1 message moved to Trash

@JohnRennie might as well move that one too:P

@joshphysics Hi Josh, long time no see!

4:14 AM
@JohnRennie Howdy

@BernardMeurer Morning - well it's morning (05:14 a.m.) in the UK :-)

Hey there John!

@joshphysics 1:15 AM here. Why are you up this early man?

Starting work!

I dunno what brought me here...9:15 pm here

4:16 AM
I have to check which of about 500 servers have died overnight. Hopefully none! :-)

@joshphysics I never know what brings me here :)

I'm like an abused wife, honestly

@JohnRennie Oh the excitement!

Ok wife wants me back in the real world. Cheers y'all.

this isn't real o.O

4:17 AM
@joshphysics See ya

@BernardMeurer when a mission critical server dies it can get quite exciting. For a small subset of definitions of the word exciting :-)

@JohnRennie Well, to me it's exciting when if I don't fix it I'll get fired and eaten by rabid dogs
It's like bungee jumping on the command line

1 hour later…
5:37 AM
@JohnRennie Hey, dumb question: do 'leave open' votes do anything?
Does it decrement the number of close votes?
Same goes for 'leave closed' on reopen votes.

Yes, though I forget the exact details. I think three leave open votes removes a question from the review queues and cancels all the close votes.
So a single leave open doesn't do anything - for example it doesn't decrement the close count - but three votes do have an effect.
A leave closed vote works the same way, though again I can remember the details of exactly how many leave closed votes are needed.

in Discussion on question by Junaid Aftab: Functional Analysis for Quantum Mechnanics, 5 hours ago, by CuriousOne
@ACuriousMind: When I was in university I actually took three classes in the mathematics department on functional analysis. In other words: I know what it is about, and it is not about physics. That is not a deprecatory comment, but one that rests in the knowledge that the physical uses of functional analysis are trivial. I am having a hard time understanding why physicists need to feel that physics and math have a strong connection, when visiting the math department and sitting in their lectures will teach exactly the opposite. What we do and what they do are different and I accept that.

user116211
CuriousOne doesn't know what 'rigor' actually means T__T

I'm clearly the reason this chat exists

user116211
@0celo7: Yes, dude you are our saviour. The chat was about to get extinct when you were not there ;P

10:49 AM
WAIT!
I remember now
There is a paper doing the wave equation on a spacetime with identifications!
"Cauchy Problem on Non-globally Hyperbolic Spacetimes"
It's the old universal law I found long ago
Whatever problem you want to tackle, someone already did

user116211
11:17 AM
@yuggib: Heyo o/

@MAFIA36790 \o
@MAFIA36790 he is quite narrow minded when it comes to the interplay between mathematics and physics
almost as much as lumo

1 hour later…
12:25 PM
@Slereah I think that's what Feynman meant when he left the message "know how to solve every problem that has been solved"

It ain't easy
There's a lot of different ways to solve the same problems
even just classical mechanics

12:40 PM
Nobody can have that much "know how"

tell that to Richard Feynman

I think Gell-Mann did :P

Can't stump the Feynman

Good morning

12:58 PM
I have a physics question
@Slereah can we please figure out page 69 in HE

heheheh
69
why do you ask me tho
when has asking me a topology question given you results

What's a good space that has $\pi_1(M)$ finite but not $\Bbb Z_2$
@Slereah literally not a topology question?
It's about varying the action for a perfect fluid

Fine
Let's see

I don't get what "integrating along the flow lines" means
damn physicists

Isn't that just like doing a flow integral or something
$$\int \Delta \rho_{;a} n^a d\Sigma$$
or something

vzn
1:46 PM
@0celo7 ah so youre not giving up? (glad to see that.) was looking into this myself some. just found this that seems to outline the basics physics.stackexchange.com/questions/63360/…

@vzn I understand the "basics"

vzn
@0celo7 you recently said it seemed to make no sense & nobody else does it

@vzn because they don't do it like it's done in that post, obviously

vzn
it looks like @FenderLesPaul has some understanding in this area eg physics.stackexchange.com/questions/189792/…

He and I are not on speaking terms

vzn
1:52 PM
why not?

And once again that's trivial
My problem is not trivial

vzn
looks like he hasnt been around for awhile

That's fine by me

vzn
my suggestion is to look for other (newer) refs on the same subj that come close to that formulation. anyway you havent described enough for me to look in more detail. (dont have HE yet myself)

...what part of "my problem is not trivial" do you not understand
I've read freaking Carroll
It has to do with Lagrangians, so please stop insulting me by linking stuff that has nothing to do with Lagrangians

vzn
1:56 PM
@0celo7 cut the antagonism dude, am trying to help you. you havent described the problem in detail in here. its you who are insulting/ projecting

You are

vzn
still have no idea why youre so obsessed with GR
the aspect of GR youre zooming in on is apparently rather obscure & other experts in here are not familiar. but, admittedly, have wondered about it myself since a long time ago. think it might be a key concept in eventually unifying GR at different scales. (aka +QM)

What?

vzn
this has some more en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluid_solution ... it sounds like they are just using fluid dynamics analog via something like "dimensional/less analysis" ... a concept not explored generally much in physics it seems...
once the analogy/ correspondence is (mathematically) established, methods from the other field are applicable ie fluid lagrangians. and so what you may be looking for may be outlined in more detail in fluid dynamics literature.

2:27 PM
Is the acceleration of earth always directed towards the sun?(if i neglect other planets)
path of earth should be considered elliptical

2:44 PM
yes
if it wasn't earth's orbit wouldn't be convex

vzn
@0celo7 noticed there seems to be a somewhat similar area, but maybe not the same that shows up in literature searches. eg perfect fluids in GR: velocity potentials and a variational principle / schutz; has stuff on lagrangian density
ie not totally following this yet myself, but in short there seems to be papers on (1) fluids inside GR and (2) GR spacetime itself as the fluid... both with very similar math/ terminology...

3:04 PM
What is "Chat interview featuring guest speaker Slereah
in 3 days" ? it seems to throw me here when i clicked the link.

@ritwiksinha: it's in Tuesday 14th June starting at 16:00 UTC, and lasts for an hour.
This is the physics chat room, and the AMA is happening here. That's why the link brought you here.

@JohnRennie but who is Slereah ?

Sam Lereah is a physicist working on general relativity and closed timelike curves
See:

Q: Questions for the June 14th Ask Me Anything

SlereahHey I'm the scheduled guest for the june 14th Physics AMA and I was told to maybe make a little presentation and asks for any questions for the AMA people might have, so here it is. About me So I am Samuel Lereah, got a Master degree in particle physics from the university of Nantes. My master ...

Am I?

lol

3:11 PM
lol

>physicist

are you real Sam Lereah ? lol

no he's a fake
the real one is tied up in his basement
in a sexy leather suit a la pulp fiction

"sexy"

vzn
evil mastermind 0celo7 switched them

3:14 PM
@0celo7 :: John feels nauseous ::

Good lord help me
I'm lucky it's so far away
@JohnRennie Did you watch pulp fiction?

vzn
still has crush on uma thurman

user116211
@vzn she is damn old ;/

She was better in Kill Bill

@0celo7 No, I've never seen it - but I've heard about the gimp suit

3:16 PM
Badass > drug addict

vzn
@MAFIA36790 "cougar material" :P

i thought this is physics chat room, So some physics. But LOL i was wrong

Pokemon screwed up the newest mystery dungeon

> First note that this is a fictional movie and the image is an artist's impression, not a detailed simulation.
How in the world can he disagree with that?

user116211
@ritwiksinha reminds me of JD.

3:17 PM
You lose your partner for quite a while and when you get them back, they're underleveled
Damn thing keeps dying

@ritwiksinha look up through the previous posts - there is a lot of physic discussed

vzn
still traumatized by 2 scenes in pulp fiction: umas overdose & the "accidental" hostage shooting

@ritwiksinha I don't like physics

user116211
Let's talk physics.

@vzn It was an accident!

3:18 PM
Also, @Danu - You've got yourself a doppelganger.

vzn
@0celo7 pulp fiction being your fave movie explains a lot about you :P

@HDE226868 That's what Danu gets for taking a random picture of the Hopf fibration as his avatar

user116211
Damn he is Jay Garrick ;/

@HDE226868 Urgh, hate when that happens.

user116211
@Danu sue him ;/

3:20 PM
Probably not my favorite
I think lots of parts of it are boring

@Danu A guy on Worldbuilding got himself an avatar of Black Hat Guy, somewhat similar to mine. It confused me to no end.

...what

vzn
@0celo7 surely in your top 10 tho. oh yeah forgot the apt shooting was #3. geez that movie is dark. it seems even darker than noir if such a thing is possible

That sentence confuses me to no end @HDE226868

i don't know but i find every movie boring especially those superhero movies

3:21 PM
Typo fixed.

user116211
where is ACM, btw?

@HDE226868 I still don't get it.

vzn
@ritwiksinha you should see uma in her superhero movie

@vzn dark?
You are too god damn sheltered!

@vzn she is 46 is i am not even 26

3:22 PM
@Danu ?

@0celo7 Rephrased: My avatar is a picture of Black Hat Guy. Someone else on Worldbuilding used a different picture of Black Hat Guy. I found this confusing.

@0celo7 If Pulp Fiction is dark?
I mean, come on.

vzn
@Danu so what, you live in a gangland ghetto or something? :P

@HDE226868 "A guy on Worldbuilding to himself an avatar of Black Hat Guy" is not English

@vzn No, but it is very easy to find much more disturbing movies.

3:22 PM
@0celo7 Whoops. Another typo.

vzn
@Danu ofc true but not as popular/ critically acclaimed etc

@Danu A little?

"to" $\to$ "got"

@vzn Even in lists of lame-o superfamous Hollywood shit.
Take that prison escape movie
Shawshank Redemption

Shawshank?
"that prison escape movie"

3:23 PM
the raping and stuff is much more nasty than anything in Pulp Fiction

vzn
yeah heard of that one, dont wanna watch it
lol spking of that how about deliverance? :P

@Danu You didn't like Shawshank?
@vzn go watch A Serbian Film.

vzn
dont like where this conversation is headed, banging my delicate sensibilities :(

@0celo7 Yeah...

A Serbian Film is probably the worst I've seen, but there's likely worse.

3:25 PM
@vzn Haven't watched it yet but I know what it's about.

That one with the Italian libertines is pretty bad too.

Anyways, many very highly acclaimed movies are quite violent/dark.

Don't remember what it's called.

vzn
spking of prison movies, reminds me: midnight express or papillon.

But Pulp Fiction makes all the violence absolutely laughable IMO

3:26 PM
@Danu Ugh crap what was the Tarentino Nazi movie
With Brad Pitt

vzn
@Danu exactly thats why its so twisted

Inglourious Bastards?

Yes

I just saw that. The ending in the cinema was gratuitous. As was 90% of the rest of the film.

That's pretty dark
Django is pretty dark

3:27 PM
I didn't think Inglorious Bastards was that dark---Django Unchained kind of was.

But yeah the gimp scene is pretty balla

vzn
@Danu re shawshank, did anyone hear the "recent" news that there is apparently a real alcatraz escape... stunning... think the movie might be loosely based on it...

Alcatraz?

vzn
> truth is stranger than fiction...

I thought they shut that place down

vzn
3:30 PM
@0celo7 yes it ran for decades
wild story, suspect this might "easily" be turned into another movie someday, has probably already occurred to someone in hollywood! dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3273273/…

WHAT APPLE MUSIC SYNCS NON APPLE MUSIC

vzn
o_O

THIS IS CRAAAAAAZY

vzn
lol, perfect for you :P

3:35 PM
@vzn dude I downloaded a 2 Chainz mixtape and it appeared on my phone
not even iTunes

vzn
@0celo7 wow, weird coincidence. saw 2 chainz open for rihanna a few yrs ago. think it was just total noise... (cant believe she picked him, dont wanna believe it, hoping it was just random) :(

appreciating 2 chainz requires more culture than the average person has
Last name Chainz, first name 2. - 2 Chainz.

vzn
2 much :(

So much money on me it won't even fold. - 2 Chainz.
You getting mad; I'm getting rich. - 2 Chainz.
Hmm, Rick Ross and 2 Chainz haven't made a collab since '08 and that was with Luda.
And 2 Chainz was still called Titty Boy back then.

I would post an actual rapper mating dance but I can feel the ban

@0celo7 lol who cares lotsa hot (latin!) babes in his videos

I hate the asterisks sometimes

I found myself listening to Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin this morning ...

3:47 PM
Would it surprise you to learn that I've never heard one of his songs

vzn
@JohnRennie cool stuff. just watched cool documentary on sunset stip that incl a few zeppelin stories. did you see almost famous?

@0celo7 Well they're pretty straightforward blues/rock so if you only listen to hip hop you wouldn't be interested

@JohnRennie I listen to way more than hip hop
But nothing quite as quotable ;P

@vzn no I've never seen that. I know of the film because it made quite a big splash in the music world when it was released.
Led Zeppelin were one of the main bands in my teenage years, so I was a huge fan for a while. I've read loads of books, biogs, etc about them.
If you're interested read "When Giants Walked the Earth" by Mick Wall.

Wait
It's a band??
I thought it was a dude

vzn
@JohnRennie same here yeah theres a book (paperback) "hammer of the gods" recommend it. saw a great led zeppeln cover band last summer ("get the led out"), wanna see em again.

> .co.uk
Why is the UK extension so bad?
Why not .queen
or just .uk

@0celo7 well the next head of state will be a King not a Queen...
It would be a bit of a fuss changing all our domains :-)
@0celo7 Actually it is just .uk

vzn
Feb 5 at 18:25, by vzn
@FenderLesPaul ps any reaction to this? :P

.co.uk is for UK companies, .ac.uk is for UK universities, .org.uk is for non-profits organisations and so on.

3:55 PM
That's dumb
Thankfully America invented the internet
We don't have to worry about that
Blister appears to be healing well

@vzn "why has a 25 year old girl fallen for 71 year old Jimmy Page" - because he's a multi-millionaire? :-)

Maybe he'll choke on a pretzel and she gets everything

Led Zeppelin have produced some truly awful crap in their time, but then that applies to all bands.

vzn
@JohnRennie exactly

Not Pendulum.

3:58 PM
Even when you filter out the crap and the merely mediocre that leaves an astonshingly good body of work as their legacy.

How many records have they sold

vzn
envious, lol

@0celo7 bucketloads.

vzn
@0celo7 (looked this up somewhat recently...) a stunning fact about led zeppelin, 2nd highest selling albums rock band after... the beatles

Never listened to them either

4:00 PM
Surely everyone likes the Beatles. They're just so, well, straightforward.

I wouldn't know
I don't know any of their songs

These days image is everything, but the Beatles just wrote songs.
If you've ever watched TV you'll have heard Beatles songs as they're used all over the place.

what's a TV?

vzn
@JohnRennie image has certainly changed a lot since their time, but beatles had lots of image too, esp later on :)

Not really
If you want to be a rapper you have to do the bling thing

4:03 PM
True

The Beatles just did whatever they wanted and didn't care what anyone thought

vzn
@JohnRennie rappers are more about image. some are nearly all image o_O

Well, maybe not
G Eazy isn't a complete degenerate
Macklemore

vzn
how about 50cent pleading bankruptcy recently? lol!

Eminem is just a drug addict, not really into bling
I don't think
But I think it's true for black rappers

4:04 PM
I really respect Macklemore as I think he's a genius lyricist
And I think he's more interested in the music than himself, which isn't true of everyone

vzn
macklemore tearing it up last few years. but how about his thriftstore/ goodwill video? he utterly mocks image... weird irony... the girls arent models either o_O

Image?
@JohnRennie I'm more into southern rap so Macklemore isn't my style...but his hits are pretty dope

vzn
its fun to play 6 degrees of separation in music/ rap world, how about this? o_O dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3484448/…

He just writes really clever lyrics. Lyrics that actually mean something and aren't just boasting about how much money he has.

@JohnRennie Ah, but the best rap is when they can boast about how much money they have and it's clever and means something.

4:08 PM
Matter of taste I suppose. Back in the 70s when I were a lad we liked lyrics to be deep and meaningful.

vzn
alas however suspect macklemore may have jumped the shark with "ceiling cant hold us" used by ice age movie this summer... great song, but a cartoon ?!? he sure doesnt take himself that seriously so maybe not totally cut out for that rap thing :P

@JohnRennie but then there's something like this which has impeccable flow, beats, atmosphere
But no substance

Atmosphere? Listen to Ten Years Gone by Led Zeppelin. That has atmosphere.

@JohnRennie There's no better music to do topology to than southern rap

Hmm, I find I can't have music on when I've reading maths. Not any music. I have music on when I'm coding because the concentration isn't as intense.
Does this actually mean anything?

Q: Lorentz Tranformation

Soumak B.What is the physical significance of the '$vx/c^2$' term in $t' = \gamma \left(1- \frac{vx}{c^2}\right)$ ? It has got something to do with clock synchronization but cant derive the 'correction term' logically

4:14 PM
I don't know any SR, can't tell you.

Perhaps the best approach would be to explain the Lorentz transformation as a hyperbolic rotation.
I'm not sure you can just pull out the $vx/c^2$ term and say anything useful about it in isolation.

vzn
that reminds me, checked out a weird electronica band cited by 0ce on here, cant/ trying to remember the name & he surely isnt gonna help with that... so need to practice a little searching fu... aha!

I wish Knife Party made more music :(

Weird?
They're extremely popular

vzn
once found a really cool link by 0celo7 in chat mos ago with a bunch of knife party songs iirc but cant find it again, wow weird coincidence, they have a song centipede on my guitar hero game, ok maybe not so obscure then o_O
@0celo7 lol are you serious? strange assertion from someone kneedeep in GR

@vzn You don't need any SR for the GR I'm interested in

vzn
4:29 PM
@0celo7 news bulletin, SR can be regarded as a "special" case of GR

So?

vzn
@0celo7 seems like anyone who really knows GR would be able to recognize/ solve the "special" cases

It would seem so.

Hi guys! in this image the spinor fields are weyl fermions. why aren't in the amplitudes the spinors $\bar{v},\bar{u},u,v$? I suppose the extra $s$ factor comes from some contraction of these spinors but I always worked with implicit expressions for these spinors

Otherwise it would be a pretty horrifying premise

Mystery when you are tidying up files...
I have no idea why I searched this article and downloaded in my phone the other day in the past...

5:24 PM
@Secret you obviously wanted to know about mesons

Mesons are some boring shit tho

http://phys.org/news/2016-02-physicists-gluons-contribution-proton.html
Ok I found why I downloaded that article. It was part of my sciencedaily browsing stuff

@Slereah Theory guys never know what they're talking about. Lots of things about mesons are hard to measure.

I didn't say that it wasn't
Just that it was boring :V

I have a tendency to click into the actual articles when reading science magazine articles. The problem is that if thsi is done on a phone, it downloaded the pdf
which is why there's stuff left behind without me relaising at that time

5:31 PM
@Secret That's why abstract pages are a good thing.

Actually it depends, for physical chemistry journals, the abstract is often not very reliable compared to the conclusion
It is quite reliable and concise for physics and maths journal articles though

5:48 PM
http://www.math.chalmers.se/~rosenan/GMA.html
Nope, he had not published the book. The course page is not updated to 2015 or 2016. Possibly there are 3 reasons to explain that
