00:03
Or call him Mrs. Urs Schreiber
gotta go ciao
I've always wondered why Germans like ciao so much
00:32
@KyleKanos Steam Wallet funds are still pending...
01:12
@0celo7 I actually don't mind wearing suits, but if not properly conditioned they look like shit and as such are high maintenance: Ironing, polishing shoes and so on.
02:03
Are questions like this allowed?
@DanielSank Does seem rather specific, probably should have one of the resources tags on it
@DanielSank Nothing wrong as far as I can see. But Kyle's suggestion might help and I don't know how many experts we have among the regular users.
@KyleKanos Well, on the other hand it can be too broad, as there may be several correct answers. I mean Ising is used as the basis for hundreds if not thousands of different models, some of which certainly can be clearly experimentally measured.
02:56
Crazy...football player from NY lost a finger playing with fireworks

2 hours later…
04:56
@KyleKanos JPP is a dumbass
Who the eff does that?
I heard the long snapper on the bears talk
and he was saying that his wife cleans the kitchen knives when they do dishes together
just so he doesn't damage his hand
and JPP who gets paid decently, is dumb enough to blow off his finger. smh

4 hours later…
08:41
@0celo7 first off, I'm not german, and secondly, I find it to be rather cute :)
08:54
Should I learn thermodynamics from a chemist or from a physicist?
JiK
JiK
09:06
You should ask that in chemistry.se chat also and compare the answers.
@JiK good point
@JiK how do I find the chemistry chat?
they don't have a link like we do
Found it
09:42
@gonenc Depends on your interests. The intro course is probably going to be boring either way. Chemists will probably be calculating a lot of numerical values for reactions and stress aspects such as enthalpy etc, whereas the usual physics curriculum is mostly aimed at quickly introducing the basics so they can move onto statistical mechanics

2 hours later…
11:23
@gonenc Do you speak German?
@0celo7 I do indeed
11:51
@alarge would I have much trouble if I directly start with statistical mechanics?
@alarge What irks me is that somehow my cat manages to cover my suits in fur even when they're in plastic from the cleaners and hung up
JiK
JiK
12:20
@0celo7 That's probably why the Schrödinger's cat experiment doesn't work: the cat's fur will tunnel through the box, so the cat is coupled to the observer even before opening the box.
@JiK hahaha
@gonenc You should be able to do it, and you should certainly be able to do many of the calculations, but the general concept might remain a bit hazy. Why do you want to do stat mech? If you have a particular application in mind, it's usually much easier to find something interesting and start refining the knowledge.
@alarge the thing is I utterly hate thermo, but I have to take the Classical Mechanics class in my first year, which also deals with thermo and I don't wanna go there unprepared
@StanShunpike That's ridiculous. He fuck his hand up way worse by falling or, you know, getting tackled. It's not like he's going to impale his hand by washing a knife...
@alarge so I don't gave any particular application in mind
12:30
@gonenc Don't stress it, the thermo part of that course is minimal usually
@ACuriousMind Well I've taken the class before in another uni and if it weren't for thermo I wouldn't have gotten 4.0 but something way better
it is like a wound in my hearth :D
@ACuriousMind btw did you use Demtröder for CM class?
@gonenc We don't usually "use" specific books for the courses, but in my case, the lecturer in the experimental course kept close to Demtröder, yes.
@ACuriousMind I hate that book too :D
@0celo7 people are in general bad at physics, that is not a surprise :)
12:42
@StanShunpike He's not the only one too. Apparently a CB from Tampa Bay Bucs blew off two fingers in a fireworks mishap.
@0celo7 wait a second, why do you have to take AP when you are already registered in a university?
That's why the raider has only one eye @KyleKanos :D
We show the world we like to play with fire!
@gonenc So I can skip calculus, take accelerated physics and skip gen Ed reqs
AP is not for admission
Why skip calc?
12:56
@gonenc Why has your profile pic gone black ? You aren't Greek, are you ?
At least take BC.
@skillpatrol I got a 5 in BC...
ok, nvm :-)
I didn't know.
@Gaurav It aint black look closely :D
@gonenc Looks like a star map. @KyleKanos can you read my future in it?
13:07
@0celo7 Yes: You will blink at least twice today
@0celo7 It is an album cover
@gonenc Oh, okay. It's just that I keep getting confused whether Greeks are still Ottomans.
@Gaurav Dafuq?
^^
@KyleKanos Hmm, that does not prove your PhD in astrology
@Gaurav there arent any ottomons any more, fortunately
13:10
@0celo7 Hmm. Well I didn't get a PhD in astrology, I got a PhD in Physics with emphasis on computational astrophysics
@KyleKanos potato potato
@gonenc :D
13:45
@KyleKanos what?!?!?!?
Thats sooooooooooooo dumb I dont even know where to begin
@0celo7 yeah, there's a fine line betweem being ocd ans overprotective and then just stupid like with JPP
Well the university doesn't recognize Astronomy/Astrophysics as distinct from Physics (which is, IMO, correct, but can be the center of a likely debate)
@KyleKanos I think Stan is talking about the stuff you linked, not your PhD :D
Oh
Well not using the linking thing makes it hard to follow
13:59
@KyleKanos blame mobile
I'm not on mobile
Stan probably is
Hmm. Could be
This confirmation hearing is "ISIS strategy part II"
@0celo7 There is no strategy. You need to stop impressionable children in the middle-east and other countries from reading a certain holy book which explicitly states that the people that hold the book holy should wage a perpetual war unto death against those who do not.
14:14
@Gaurav Er, isn't the whole second sentence there a strategy?
@Gaurav It's a political and cultural problem, not a religious one. The Bible has just as many unsavoury sentences which lead to barbaric actions when interpreted a certain way, witness the Crusades and the Catholic Inquisitions a few centuries ago. The interesting question is why the politics and culture of certain regions in the world have fostered such a medieval mentality towards life, compared to other regions.
@MarkMitchison Well put.
Wicker turns the questioning to Russia! Exciting.
There was an article in the paper today about some radical Buddhists committing violence against some Muslim groups. You'd think Buddhists are particularly non-violent. But it just goes to show that the religion itself isn't the problem. It's the people who use religion as a handy excuse that are the problem
@Gaurav Note that Quran also says that the life of a person is given buy the Allah and that it can only be taken away by it. Taking away someone else's life is considered to be shirk, which is one of the biggest sins.
btw I'm not religious -at all- but it gets to my nerves, when someone says something like this.
@KyleKanos i was referring to your comment about the Buccs player
14:32
@MarkMitchison To be fair, the First & Second Crusades wer a reaction to the Muslim overthrows of Christian-controlled Jerusalem.
And I'm sure those heathens had no good reason to overthrow the godly and beneficent Christian rulers of Jerusalem.
To be honest I don't know the specifics, you may indeed be right about the Crusades. Nevertheless, my general point was just that evil people do evil things, and justify them using their religion
@KyleKanos What? The first crusade was what established christian-controlled Jerusalem. Or do you take the start of the crusade to be long after the Pope declared the invasion start?
The actual choice of religion is irrelevant, they are all equally incorrect,
@MarkMitchison Then read a history book?
@MarkMitchison Proof?
They are all equally incorrect in my opinion, sorry I thought that implication was obvious.
And I have read a few history books, I'm sorry that I don't know as much as you do about this specific example.
14:37
Many worlds quantum mechanics is the only true religion
Are you genuinely saying what your comments seem to lightly imply, that no evil acts have ever been committed in the name of Christianity?
@JimsBond Christians were ousted from Jerusalem control in the 600's, but had been ruling the lands long before then. 1st crusade wasn't until almost 1100
@0celo7 You and I have a very different definition of the word "religion"
@0celo7 Out, you quantum zealot!
Raider nation is THE religion
14:38
@MarkMitchison No, not at all. What I'm saying is that revisionist history is wrong
@KyleKanos Oh, you're going back to the original christian control of Jerusalem. I thought you were referring to the reasons for the following crusades where they were just upset that the previous crusades hadn't worked perfectly
@JimsBond a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance
@KyleKanos The Crusades were a religiously motivated war, and war is an evil act (in my opinion, again). That is the only part of the history that was relevant for my point. I didn't actually state any other specifics, I don't see how I am being revisionist.
Just war theory (jus bellum iustum) is a doctrine, also referred to as a tradition, of military ethics studied by theologians, ethicists, policy makers, and military leaders. The purpose of the doctrine is to ensure war is morally justifiable through a series of criteria, all of which must be met for a war to be considered just. The criteria are split into two groups: "the right to go to war’' (jus ad bellum) and ‘'right conduct in war’' (jus in bello). The first concerns the morality of going to war and the second with moral conduct within war. Recently there have been calls for the inclusion...
There is nothing more important than the raiders.
All you haters get in line.
14:41
Murder is an evil act, but if you're telling me I'm not allowed to kill the guy trying to kill me, you're nuts.
@skillpatrol What the heck are you talking about?
@KyleKanos Without even reading that article I can tell you that a just war will be defined as the lesser of two (or more) evils. Doesn't make it not evil.
The Oakland Raiders are a professional American football franchise based in Oakland, California. The Raiders began playing in 1960 as a member of the American Football League (AFL); they have been members of the National Football League (NFL) since the 1970 AFL–NFL merger. As of the 2014 season, the Raiders belong to the West division of the American Football Conference. Entering the 2015 season the Raiders have an all-time regular season record of 437–388–11, with a playoff record of 25–18. In the club's first three seasons (1960–1962), the team struggled both on and off the field. In 1963, the...
@ACuriousMind Football.
Religion @ACuriousMind
14:41
They used to be a good football team, then they let Al Davis run things.
I can barely imagine something more unimportant :P
And even though he's been dead for several years, they're still feeling his effects
@skillpatrol Truth hurts don't it?
:D
@0celo7 Then eating, drinking and breathing are my religion ;)
14:43
2 mins ago, by skill patrol
All you haters get in line.
@KyleKanos It would also be very interesting to understand how religiously motivated wars could be justified to an atheist, say, or an adherent of an unrelated religion.
@skillpatrol I'm not a hater, nor am I a fan.
Ok, np.
The one true religion is hockey (praise be upon it)
@skillpatrol I'm a fan of American football in general (college & pro). It's sorta depressing to see the same 5 teams suck year-in and year-out
14:45
True that.
@JimsBond you're in the minority
Hockey is cool when a fight breaks out.
@0celo7 That's okay. Our religion doesn't necessitate that everyone believe in it. We know hockey to be the almighty, with The Great One as its holy messenger
Wow, you learn something every day
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_football
Does anyone actually play Canadian football?
14:47
Grey Cup
Not meant as a pejorative comment^
A few drunk Mounties
Lots of people
Just an ignorant one
@MarkMitchison Former American Collegiate stars who don't get drafted into the NFL play in the Canadian league
14:48
Canadian Football used to have two teams in the same league called the roughriders
The Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Ottawa Rough Riders
Seems similar to the difference between rugby league and rugby union, I guess.
Sorta, they get 3 downs, not 4.
It's not as big as hockey
So more passing.
Canada=hockey
football is too slow and too tame
14:52
Compared to?
hockey
In some ways yes.
But nothing beats the pure intensity of the super bowl.
@skillpatrol Especially when Peyton Manning is so visibly frustrated at sucking
Gotta love that hawk D
Even if they couldn't repeat
@skillpatrol I only like it for the commercials, the rest is standard american football
14:59
World Cup anyone?
EVO anyone?
4 years is too long to wait pal
@skillpatrol Agreed
Too long to wait for that much disappointment.
(I'm English)
Who starred my comment and didn't say anything!?
Me, sorry :)
It pays to advertise
15:05
Which game you excited for: MVC? SF4? MKX? Something else?
We should "pin" it.. I like MVC
But I'm a UFC fan too.
Back in the days of the original rules it was better.
IDK if I've seen much MVC. I mostly watch MKX and SF#
Do you watch UFC?
I'll usually catch highlights on YouTube (the actual highlights from Fox & UFC, not fan-made ones where it's just stills & audio).
Not worth the $50 for just me to watch it
Plus they don't normally start until 10 pm (eastern) and I like getting to bed around 11 pm
Since Wladimir Klitschko took all the fun out of boxing in the last 10 years...
:(
They say he has a good chance of beating Joe Louis' record.
He is tied for second place for all time title defences now.
15:18
Oddly, I've never really been into boxing. Don't get me wrong--Klitschko's current record is impressive, but boxing just doesn't interest me
It is an acquired taste :-)
What's your favourite nfl team @KyleKanos?
Kyle on ignore this user (everywhere)
:D
Still sore after Franco Harris' immaculate reception.
Okay...don't hate, but I was trying to find something that showed the history of Steelers vs Raiders and found this one:
Whatever.
15:26
lol the raiders fans are still loyal
that's the impressive part
How many winning seasons have the Raiders had the last 10 years?
Last 20?
(and 8-8 isn't a winning record)
2002 we went to the Super Bowl
And lost?
@KyleKanos Question. I posted a question on Math SE and one answer has 10 upvotes but I preferred a different one with 4. Would I be better of just not accepting one or should I accept the one I liked most?
15:27
@StanShunpike Accept the one you think helped you the most. If it's the 4 votes one, so be it
Okay
gracias :)
@skillpatrol Raiders have rebuilt themselves a decent team though
I don't think they'll be division champs, but they'll get some more wins than last year
We'll find a way to screw it up ;)
Keep the faith
No team has dropped so fast and so far from a Super Bowl appearance in NFL history
7 straight years of 11 or more loses.
Well you've got del Rio now
He's a decent coach with a good defense mind
I'm not holding my breath
The same teams just keep on pounding us.
15:34
@skillpatrol KC, Denver & SD?
That's like 6 losses right there
Even when we went undefeated in the division we didn't make the playoffs
6-10 that year.
@skillpatrol That's one qualm I have about the divisions right now
A team that beats all of its division rivals shows that they're the better of those 4 teams
But they can lose all the others and miss out on the playoffs
Well what's the point of divisions then? Why not just have AFC & NFC and just take the best 6 records from each conference?
Steelers have a tough close to the season: at SEA, vs IND, at CIN, vs DEN, at BAL, at CLE
3 division games in 4 weeks, plus Seahawks, Colts & Broncos.
And with a new Def Coord and youthful players, that stretch is going to be hard :/
No Brady for the Pats game though, should be nice
The system creates dynasties, and the system is supposed to equalize things with the draft order?
Don't even mention mr tuck rule pal.
15:42
They got rid of it
Too late for us.
By like 12 years
> The owners abolished the rule with a 29-1 vote at the 2013 annual meeting in Phoenix on March 20, 2013.[9] The only team to vote against the elimination of the tuck rule was the Pittsburgh Steelers
:D
Then again, the Steelers pretty much vote against every change
The steelers are the only team in league history to win a super bowl with no free agents
iirc
In the 70s?
15:53
Hmm. I would've thought a lot of teams back then would have done it that way. It wasn't until like '92 that FA (as we know it now) really was anything
16:11
Still searching...
...I'm sure I read it somewhere.
Well maybe you'll become part of the Steeler Nation now ;) Thanks for that
17:22
> 7. ... During World War II, many players were drafted by the U.S. Military and thus had to quit the Steelers in order to defend our country. During this period with the shortage of players in the early 40s, Art Rooney sold the team to Alexis Thompson and Rooney went to work with his friend, Bert Bell, the owner of the Eagles
That was when my grandfather played with the Steelers (the Steagles)
Wait, no. I'm confusing the years. It was the 1944 Card-Pitt team that my grandfather played
The QBs for the Card-Pitt team threw a total of like 10 touchdowns and 50 interceptions
Widely considered as one of the worst teams ever
When I informed my Mom of that a few years ago, she was shocked because her father always gave the impression that he & the team were great
17:43
@ACuriousMind My mission is to read some of QoGS in the Library of Congress. Let's see how that works out...
17:57
@KyleKanos your grandfather played in the NFL?!?
Yes. He also played pro baseball

@0celo7 Did you get a 0?
@KyleKanos "strategy" as concieved by the US govt. Sorry if that was not well written.
@gonenc Extremely sorry if I hurt your sentiments. My intention was not to imply that Islam is immoral by nature.

In fact, to the best of my knowledge, Mahomet is considered to be a harbringer of civilisation to the middle east (this is what my Pakistani friends tell me). Although there might be passages inciting voilence, the ultimate intention was good. The effect of Islam on the civilisation as a whole might be a great moral jump at the time. Therefore, it is unfair to see a few phrases in isolation.
That being said (@MarkMitchinson), the way voilence against non-muslims is institutionalised in Islam is comparatively greater than that of other faiths (in the sense the proportion of such passages, and the various brilliant ways they are justified). It is, therefore, more difficult to reform a radicalised Muslim in comparison to say, a radicalised Christian.
Since the problem is of ideology (which perhaps, might also be influenced by culture, or vice versa), no amount of military offence against terrorists will give a long term solution.
18:59
The rest has sensitive info
@JimsBond The difference is that a 'radicalised' Buddhist cannot point to any passage in the Pali texts to justify his violence against non-Buddhists.
@ACuriousMind Need any research materials your Uni can't get?
I have a pass to (literally) the largest library in the world
I should find a question on PSE, order the relevant book at LoC, then cite it!! That would be awesome!
Pretty sure library of congress is larger
I find it amazing that Harvard's library is ten times larger than the average public university library.
10 books for every 1 book is incredible.
19:16
@KyleKanos If you mean 'true' by 'correct', then all Abrahamic religions are 'incorrect' in view of scientific evidence.
@Gaurav What scientific evidence?
@KyleKanos Uh, like nobody can be a virgin mother (ref Mary) ?
@Gaurav Oh I know Mary...but (a) Jews don't believe that & last I checked they were an Abrahamic religion (b) cite your proof
Not according to this @0celo7
Stop using m.wikipedia!
19:24
2nd largest :)
@KyleKanos And Jews believe in some other unscientific nonsense. (b) proof of what ?
But I'm on mobile
Proof that an unlimited being (who, mind you, created all that you see around you) couldn't make a virgin pregnant.

Nobody abbreviates "of" as "o"? When you type LoC. You need to use an apostrophe as in o'clock :P
Lo'C
That's "on the clock"
Not "of the clock"
Are you absolutely sure?

jack-o'lantern is jack of the lantern
But I'd argue that o'something is short for of the something
