Any other takers?
@ColinMcFaul ?

user54412
@ManishEarth perhaps we can add a meta post on science-vs-engineering to our to-do list

@ChrisWhite Sure

user54412
I'd be willing to contribute

@ChrisWhite If you start one, I can wikify it so that we can collaborate. Or Google Docs

Q: Are engineering questions appropriate for this site?

Chris WhiteOften we get questions of the form "How to build this particular device?" or "Why was this design implemented in such-and-such product?" Are these questions appropriate for Physics Stackexchange?

user54412
@ManishEarth CW please

done
bit busy atm, but I'll see if I can add anyhing

user54412
no rush - it needs more text, and it needs links to good (and bad?) examples

Chris White Under Construction. Relevant query Often we get questions of the form "How to build this particular device?" or "Why was this design implemented in such-and-such product?" Are these questions appropriate for Physics Stackexchange?

Added some engineering SE sites and a link to the "why do airplanes fly" question

Sweet, looks good
We'll see what they have to say

A: Chat session to discuss and possibly finalize close reasons

ManishearthReason #3: Engineering Bookmarked chat conversation This question appears to be about engineering, which is the application of scientific knowledge to construct a solution to solve a specific problem. As such, it is off topic for this site, which deals with the science, whether theoretical o...

@ManishEarth does that count users who particpated, users who were present, or users who registered to be notified?

Users who made any noise at all, iirc
one sec, I can check
@ChrisWhite Users who made any noise at all
Also, click on the link, it shows participation times on the side
Note: Bookmarking is not a mod power, you can do it too

Good ol' Physics Meta - uninvited participant in nearly every conversation

@ChrisWhite lol

@ManishEarth I see these new notifications on my avatar in chat - blue circles (rather than black) with numbers

user54412
I moused over one to see something about "offensive" before it disappeared

user54412
is this a bug? I thought only full mods see chat flag-as-offensive flags

user54412
(also that intense 4 hour chat wreaked havoc on my graphics card :P other things are bugging out too right now)

@chris by design. As a user with.10k network rep, you can see offensive/soam flags, but NOT custom flags
If 6 10k users vote a flag as valid, the message is deleted and the user gets a 30min chat suspension

user54412
lol - I am going to be entertained by this...

8:31 PM
@ChrisWhite Not that much, there are like 2 flags per day
Most of them are from The Bridge (Arqade), The Comms Room (Server Fault), and The DMZ (IT Security)
usually the flags from the latter two are people flagging offensive language which isn't regarded offensive (as it is in jest and all the regulars do it) in that room. It's useful to check context when this happens, but not necessary

8:49 PM
@ChrisWhite looks like there may be enough flags to keep you entertained after all :P

9:21 PM
I always just ignore chat flags
(unless they come up in a Physics room, but I've never seen one)

user54412
the temptation to flag that ^ ...

user54412
but yeah, I intend to ignore flags for other rooms

@DavidZaslavsky I handle a few
But yeah, they can lead to much drama

Q: Should I be banned from chat by a moderator from another Stack Exchange site?

user27134So, I've just been banned by a non-gaming mod for stating something in chat that wasn't flagged, which was along the lines of: "being @ChrisHatez should be a bannable offense.", in a playful string of others stating "X should be a bannable offense." For this, I was banned for 60 minutes. I wasn'...

^^ for example
But that was an exceptional case

Yeah, that's why I don't handle flags in other rooms (and would probably have left that one alone, in your place). I don't have the contextual information required to decide whether a chat suspension is appropriate.

@DavidZaslavsky In this case it was part of an ongoing series of fights coming from The Bridge that I, Mad Scientist, and Caleb were trying to control
(which meant that I had full contextual information)
Otherwise yeah, I look at the context first
and unsuspend the user in case the 10k users didn't check the context

9:38 PM
Oh, sure, well then if you had been involved from the beginning, then it makes sense.

Any comments on the engineering close reason?

9:51 PM
Oh... not at the moment. I haven't really thought about it much yet. But if there's nothing else competing for the third close slot, why not?

Yep

1 hour later…
11:23 PM
haha what the hell
do you guys ever talk about physics in here
