6:01 PM
It takes about 15 minutes to brush my teeth X 3 times a day @0celo7

For some reason, I'm not getting notifications when pinged in chat
@0celo7 brush and floss 3 times a day (at least)

What insane person brushes three times a day
And how does that take 45 minutes

After each meal.

You brush your teeth at work?

6:04 PM
Also after I eat a snack (only floss)
@0celo7 Yeah. In the university. everywhere. I always have toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with myself wherever I go

It pays off in the long run.

That's interesting
He's apparently enjoying the short run as well

Insane

After you've had a triple root canal you learn to appreciate your teeth.

Why would I get a triple root canal?

6:10 PM
I have.
So it's not so "insane" after all.

@BernardoMeurer Got all the time now for them projects.
I celebrated it with a trip to Madrid, to that records store I mentioned.

Root canals are not a very nice experience

6:28 PM
@0celo7 What's up?

7:03 PM
@Danu I can't figure out how to get one arrow going up, one down, and have the row and column size be large
I got two arrows by putting a bend in one but that looks trashy

Q: Dynamics Classical Mechanics Problem

Mike Harb While solving this problem I encountered a problem with the free pinion, when I wanted to sum moments around the contact point between the pinion and the rack, I got that the inertia of the pinion is equal to zero, since there is no moments. Please is there anything wrong with my approach?

@JaimeGallego Nice!!

@BernardoMeurer Need some advice. Which site is best to begin practicing programming problems ? Some people told me about sites like SPOJ, Topcoder, CodeChef, HackerEarth, HackerRank, Project Euler etc. But which one will be better for a beginner like me (who knows basic C++/Java/Python)

@Blue I hate all of those
Find something that interests you
then build it
That's the best way to learn IMO
I started by building a program that solved quadratics
then moved to solve Brocard's problem
and on it went

Project Euler is cool tho

Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer Hmm, but I guess competitive programming improves algorithmic skills and code efficiency doesn't it? Competition is like a fuel for me :P

7:32 PM
@Blue I guess, if you're into that. I used HackerRank before and my didn't hate it
That's all I can say on these though
Ah, and really good people all seem to have tried Project Euler, so maybe that too?

Anonymous
Project Euler is more mathematics and less programming though :P

Some problems can actually be done with pen, paper, and higher math

Anonymous
But yeah, it looks very interesting

It depends on what approach one takes

And can somebody tell me what this GitHub is? :P

Anonymous
7:33 PM
(I know nothing)

I presume you don't know about Git either?

Anonymous
Nope :/

Now, on a serious explanation...

Anonymous
Tell me in brief if possible. And what's the use of GitHub? I've heard people say it's like a place where you can store and share code :P

It's a bit hard to grasp at first. Git is a version control system. It manages different versions of files. For example, when one is developing a program, parts of the source code are rewritten, deleted, added... Git keeps track of all of that.
If you make a mistake and want to go back to an earlier version, you can.
It has some other functions, such as "branches" that allow the dev to isolate developments from the main source code.
It's not just for programming, it's also used for writing books and such

7:45 PM
@JaimeGallego Oh, I see. It's basically a type of repository. I think I can use it to store my solved programming problems :)

GitHub is a website where you can share your Git developments online. Say you're writing a book; certain chapters can be written by you, others by a friend, and one can merge the work of both, fork it...
Yes

Gotcha! Thanks :-)

7:57 PM
@JaimeGallego Right, well, now that we're intelligent, the way our evolution works is changing.
@JaimeGallego I really, really dislike this kind of joke because it spreads the misconception that git is magic.
@Blue Git and github are two different things. Git is a program that helps you manage versions of files, i.e. for collaborative work.
Often, you are your own collaborator. For example, you may be working on two different parts of your files at the same time, but you might want to keep those changes separate until each one is done. Git allows you to do this with the idea of "branches".
Github is a website that hosts git repositories.
@Mostafa Be very careful to not damage your gums. Brushing too harshly is actually rather not good for you, and if you're brushing three or more times a day, you could seriously hurt yourself.

@DanielSank Oh, I was reading about that just now! So I need to learn Git to use GitHub (as a repository of my solved programs)?

8:33 PM
@Blue Github actually has a pretty awesome online interface, so you can use it without using Git on your own computer.
However, I do recommend learning to use git.
Now, I should say, although Git isn't intrinsically complicated or hard, it is very counterintuitive at times.
It's certainly best to learn to use Git from someone who already knows how to use Git.
There are, of course, many tutorials online.

8:45 PM
@DanielSank I get it. Thanks a lot for explaining!

Yeah, I think some of my seniors know how to use Git. I'll ask them to teach me. :)

Can someone peer review this dupehammer and give a shout if it's off the line?

Q: matrix of rotation for quantum states

John JackFor the two-level quantum system, we have the bloch sphere representation, and for a rotation we have the exponential operator: $$\text{exp}(\frac{-i \sigma \cdot \hat{n} \phi}{2})$$ where $\sigma = (\sigma_x, \sigma_y, \sigma_z)$ has Pauli matrices as components. Hence if we start with spin up $...

@DanielSank git is not magic
It is just too complicated

@EmilioPisanty but relativistic quantum magnetohydrodynamics is :P
@EmilioPisanty Seems reasonable to me, but I don't exactly have enough rep to do things like reviewing here, so you might want to not listen to me
(as in, it's a reasonable dupehammer)

@Blue Daniel will strongly disagree with me, but for learning purposes I think mercurial is way better. It is functionally equivalent to git (other than the ability to use GitHub, and until things like "underlying informational model" make sense, let alone make a difference) and is easy easier to learn and handle
But if your locals know git then that's the deciding factor

10:01 PM
@EmilioPisanty Ah, thanks for the advice. I'll look into mercurial too. :)

@Blue Mercurial is cancer
Emilio is paid by the Mercurial people
I am certain

@BernardoMeurer At-least you didn't call it "proprietary malware" :P

Well, it's not proprietary :P

10:57 PM
@dmckee @JohnRennie I have a challenge for both of you :P
I want to see how y'all perform in my C exam

PhySE sad fact #3: 9 users hold more 9 percent of the total user reputation.
Proletarier aller Länder vereinigt Euch!

@BernardoMeurer I might enjoy that another time, but I'm too busy just now. Sorry.
@Mostafa Reputation is a long-tail distribution on all sites.There are some posts about it somewhere. It's really quite astounding.
But then it seems that I'm one of the evil overlords, so what would you expect me to say, huh?

@Mostafa so my prodigious bounty spending got me out of that list? Probably a good thing, too

@dmckee Sorry but I'm not negotiating anything about this with you. You're a 9 percenter yourself

@KyleKanos I think this query may be interesting for you. It measures the similarity between all SE site pairs by calculating the correlation coefficients of their tag distribution.
@KyleKanos On the same structure, it would be relatively easy to generate a cross-network migration stat. The trick is that the migrations aren't in the PSE database, but they are available in the DB of the target site, even the rejected ones, if they weren't deleted.
@KyleKanos Btw, playing with the SE DBs since a while, I have an impression. I see a well-maintained, clear, very optimized db - whose developers seem perfectly incompetent to develop anything, just because it would be a deviation from the perfectness what they think they've reached.

11:21 PM
@dmckee A shame :P. I'll translate it and when you have time we can all compete
Me, you and @JohnRennie
Rules are: You can't compile the code, you can't use any tools to check it, no googling documentation, no IDEs. No nothing. It's just you and a bare-bones text editor

@Mostafa Young Revolutionär :-) Over around 35k, there is no more privilege what they get with the rep. Actually, the last real power what you can get is at 10k, but in my opinion, even this doesn't worth its price. If you want to produce the highest possible effect, then make 3k on so many sites as you only can.

11:38 PM
@peterh You apparently have no idea of the concept of power here, and what's going on behind the scenes.

@Mostafa No.

@peterh I'll explain it to you in simple terms ASAP

@Mostafa I have my own ideas and concepts, and against the customs, I openly communicate them.
@Mostafa Thanks! I am very curious.

@dmckee can we call for your head?
@Mostafa Bitte nicht
Ich denke wir sollten mehr wie Frankreich sein

@0celo7 You can call for it all you want. Getting it is another thing entirely. I kinda need it.

11:41 PM
Kann ich Robespierre spielen?

@0celo7 Wow, ich dachte Du bist Französe

Warum würdest du das denken?

@0celo7 Ich weiß nicht. Oder aus .ru

wat

@peterh I'm going to break my silence about it soon. It's gonna be BIG.

11:43 PM
Ich bin Deutscher

@Mostafa Thanks, I am very curious.

(and If I get banned before I talk don't get surprised.)

@Mostafa the mods won't care and they needn't care
none of us are going to change anything, for better or worse

what's with all the German

nothing for you to worry about

11:48 PM
@0celo7 The main problem is that if they ban, you know it only after it. And you have no way to know, if you are nearing the cage. And if you don't accept the said and unsaid customs, there is always some chance of an irrecoverable mistake. I got already 1yr "leave" on another site, and I won't another.

I know that's the problem

@Mostafa I think mods don't punish preemptively, it is the few things what is known from their behavior.
@Mostafa It is practical to associate your chat account to the site where you feel yourself most safe. If none of us is associated with PSE, and we are on a room which is also not associated with the PSE, then the PSE mods likely won't punish us, although they could.

@peterh last time I got banned by a CM
I am not worried about PSE mods

@0celo7 They can cage you for a year and you won't be able to appeal to anywhere. They do this only if you did a lot offense already, but you don't have clear feedback about how big is an "offense" in practice, and how far are you from the cage now.
