Shouldn't the diff geo notion of torsion be the same as the "GR" notion...since GR is just basing it off diff geo (btw GR takes a torsion-free connection as an assumption, so there's no torsion in GR)

it's not available on my country either

Of course barbara probably cannot see my message because of what happens in maths chat

@BalarkaSen i think it's only available in the uk

@Mithrandir24601 I can report this video isn't available in Germany, either

:( It's such a good video

10:03 PM
brb sending open letter to bbc on behalf of the h bar

Does anyone speak GR?

I might

@SirCumference greek?

how deep is leonard susskind's theoretical minimum?

does the minimum part not answer your question?

10:09 PM
@MohammadAreebSiddiqui About 5 feet deep (more seriously, I'm not sure what exactly you want to know as an answer to that question)

There are other parts of that episode where it has a fight with a small shark :)

@SirCumference Some.

XDD expected that, i mean in the first few pages he talks about how this is not a big fat mechanics book and provides just enough knowledge for the subject
how much is this just enough?

depends what you wanna do

@enumaris Welp, this might be asking a bit much, but would you be willing to skim this short paper a little? It suggests that the entire Universe is at least 47.8–170 billion Gpc in diameter, even though we obviously can't observe anything beyond the observable universe
Basically I'm hoping someone could explain simpler what is happening

10:12 PM
distances in GR are tricky
anything non-local in GR is tricky
are they talking about the co-moving distance?

"topology scale"
Have I mentioned that I hate physicists?

It doesn't even say whether it's comoving or proper
What...?

Hi

0celo hates us
:(

@SirCumference sigh *47.8 Gpc

10:13 PM
I am nervous about tomorrow. I have an interview
at 2 pm, technically "a phone conversation"

@0celo7 alright name one other physicist that says topology scale
i don't think that's even acceptable in physics

then I hate the field for not deleting these guys from arXiv

@0celo7 Welp, is it wrong to trust a paper less if it's in a journal with a low IF?

@SirCumference what is IF?

@Cows Impact factor
The impact factor (IF) or journal impact factor (JIF) of an academic journal is a measure reflecting the yearly average number of citations to recent articles published in that journal. It is frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field; journals with higher impact factors are often deemed to be more important than those with lower ones. The impact factor was devised by Eugene Garfield, the founder of the Institute for Scientific Information. Impact factors are calculated yearly starting from 1975 for journals listed in the Journal Citation Reports. 2...

10:16 PM
oooh

A measure of how many citations it gets a year
> journals with higher impact factors are often deemed to be more important than those with lower ones.

@SirCumference the most prestigious journal in my field has an IF of 2
those numbers don't mean anything

@0celo7 Right.

there's another with 2.375
maybe I'm in the wrong area

well Nature would be like the highest IF I think

10:19 PM
nature is like 41

isn't Nature like at IF of 100 or something
right

Well, the only reason I found the paper is because Wikipedia's page for the Universe lists the size as "at least 156-554 billion light years" in the infobox
The Universe is all of space and time (spacetime) and its contents, which includes planets, moons, minor planets, stars, galaxies, the contents of intergalactic space and all matter and energy. While the size of the entire Universe is still unknown, it is possible to measure the observable universe. Halpern and Tomasello calculated the observable universe using data from European Space Agency's Planck satellite, estimating it to be 90.68 billion light-years across, 0.7% smaller then previously thought. The earliest scientific models of the Universe were developed by ancient Greek and Indian...

something much higher than like the Physical Review ones

which is the popular one?
Phys Rev A?

@0celo7 Once you have forsaken GDP, there's no way back :)

10:19 PM
Phys rev A-D are on different topics

@0celo7 Does "your field" refer to a math field or physics field?

@SirCumference Math/Math.phys

I don't think any of them are significantly more popular than any other except insofar as whether that field is more popular than the other

Both publish in the Journal

Phys rev X I think is the paper for the "cool" stuff?

10:21 PM
I work on Riemannian geometry in a GR context so it's really hard to place me

You mean Lorentzian geometry
:P

no

@enumaris But then the likes of Nature, by it's very, erm, nature, publishes a good number of e.g. biology papers, which on average, get more citations than the average physics paper

@enumaris please give me the benefit of the doubt
I know what Lorentzian geometry is -- and while I know a lot of it, I'm not working on it
it's completely different

why are you working in Riemannian geometry in GR? GR explicitly uses a Lorentzian metric

10:22 PM
spacelike hypersurfaces are Riemannian manifolds.

@Mithrandir24601
guys I found it
why doesn't it load

@0celo7 srsly recommend a game
If it's relatively cheap rn i'll probs buy it
Rn idk whether to get AC BF or ME2

heeeeeck
I'm at my pc

open to any suggestions

what good games are there

10:26 PM
Idk dude Im asking for recommendations : P

infinite warfare

I really enjoyed Max Payne 3 though
But I have played the whole Trilogy

I'm considering getting it

@Phase Already done with Planescape and Tyranny? :P

@ACuriousMind why tf haven't you recommended me games

10:27 PM
@ACuriousMind nope but this late in the evening I can't start them

games for pc?

Because they take so much time
@0celo7 RECOMMEND ME GAMES

WOW GUYS DID YOU JUST IGNORE THAT OCTOPUS VID LIKE IT WASN'T EVEN INTERESTING
SHEESH

@0celo7 Hmmm?

@ACuriousMind ?

10:28 PM
I went all that way to find it for you guys because it was blocked and you didn't even care

you've given Phase all these games to play but nothing for me

@0celo7 But I already recommended you most of the games I liked way back!

are 2nd order DEs just a guessing game

@ACuriousMind I don't have a good memory
@ACuriousMind @Phase what's a game we can play together?

@0celo7 borderlands 2
Bruh
We could all play

10:30 PM
minecraft

Our TA used "GR" to stand for Galilean relativity in our notes.
...

@SirCumference you got trolled by your TA

@0celo7 maplestory

I love MineCraft Awesome Parodys

@0celo7 I haven't played anything but Dota 2, BL2 or AoE 2 with others in a long time

10:31 PM
@Phase I legitimately spent 5 mins confused (obviously assuming GR to mean general relativity) and scrolled up to see what was going on.

Wow Balarka sen said that with no provocation
What a nerd

ay, don't star that

@ACuriousMind hi, do you reckon we can discuss that measure zero question tonight, or would rather postpone to tomorrow morning? Thx again by the way for that answer.

@ACuriousMind I haven't played BL2 in a long old time
What's AoE?

@user929304 measure theory? I can do it.

10:32 PM
What about Diablo 3?
How expensive even is it rn

@goodnight There's no build-up though :/

@user929304 I'm trying to find a question answered by @EmilioPisanty about precisely that issue, but I haven't had any luck so far

@Mithrandir24601 well SORRY

@Phase Age of Empires

@ACuriousMind isn't that the game where DLC came out like 15 years after release

10:33 PM
AoE is good game
I also like EE

@goodnight tsk tsk :P

Diablo too expensive
4 me

@Phase If you wanna play some Diablo-style games, I recommend the free Path of Exile instead

:(
Hm, we could. What do you recommend @ACuriousMind ?

Path of Exile is too time-consuming

10:33 PM
Right, I also played PoE with my former roommate

@Phase My ears are bleeding

@0celo7 hi, it s regarding this question/answer here: physics.stackexchange.com/questions/371080/… and the comment contains the question

I literally had to pull up my headphones from my ears

@BalarkaSen so is my heart

@ACuriousMind ah alrighty

10:34 PM
@BalarkaSen yeah he does that

@user929304 that doesn't appear to do with measure theory at all
@Phase CS:GO?

Oh jesus
I mean, we could

@ACuriousMind CS:GO?

I haven't played a competitive FPS in so long I'll be trash

@Phase me neither

10:35 PM
Inb4 we just end up playing TTT or some other strange child game

@0celo7 It's not "measure theory", just my throwaway remark that the set of separable states has zero measure within the space of states for any measure you migth conceivably choose
@0celo7 I played CS on some LAN parties way back in the day, but haven't touched it since

@Phase if you want a free game, you want Team Fortress 2 and DOTA 2. I'll see you in a couple of decades :)

@Mithrandir24601 I've played TF2 a lil bit
Only spy though

@ACuriousMind sigh, do I have to play DOTA with you

@0celo7 @ACuriousMind I don't think my heart is ready for another MOBA

10:37 PM
@ACuriousMind Huh. Is that obvious?

I can't handle screwing up in such toxic environments : P

I'm not fundamentally opposed to CS, just haven't played it in ages

@ACuriousMind none of us have

yerp

We can all rush B and have cheeki breeki freaky times

10:38 PM
we'd all succ
I'm down for it
I got it in a humble bundle a while back

Me too

@0celo7 Sort of - the separable states are basically a submanifold of lower dimension

Are you working in ADM GR?

@ACuriousMind Can you make that precise for $L^2(R)$ and $L^2(R)$?

10:39 PM
Playing out the subwoofers of our adidas striped ford fiestas

@0celo7 No, just for finite-dimensional systems

@enumaris that's part of what I do
@ACuriousMind oh ok

as an engineer?

I'm not an engineer

wut

10:40 PM
anymore

@enumaris I don't think there are GR engineers

Well maybe the guys who engineered gravity probe b
something like that
or LISA or LIGO

@Phase U S S R

@Phase I listen to music like that unironically...

C h e e k i B r e e e e e e k i

10:40 PM
you found my taste in music

@SirCumference I think by "topology scale" the authors in that paper mean something like a radius of curvature...

@0celo7 That's not bad. What's bad is when you start liking it unironically. That's how I started to like yung lean

I thought the GPS engineers studied GR too

Slavic Hard bass grows on you too though

@enumaris Maybe, but that's stupid
@Phase I said unironically.

10:41 PM
Yeah ik, hence I said it's not bad
I'm just too far gone

then your sentence is nonsense

Why

"What's bad is when you start liking it unironically."

X is fine, it's only bad when Y

that's my situation

10:42 PM
Yeah
OH
My brain had like

"Yeah ik, hence I said it's not bad"

a mini stroke

They state that they are trying to find out if the universe is closed or not, and their result is, if the universe is closed, 24Gpc is the smallest "topological scale" ...I can only gather from here that they probably mean the radius of curvature must not be <24Gpc

I read it as ironic so many times
I'm kind of concerned

I unironically like vaporwave

10:43 PM
That's just objectively bad

I have no idea why they call it "topology scale" that's not standard physics nomenclature afaik

jk. I dont like HOME though

@Phase ok I'm downloading CS:GO

@BalarkaSen I like this though
Idk if it really counts but it's fringe vaporwave style at least
@0celo7 nice

@Phase you're gonna have to tell me your name btw

10:44 PM
I'm too lazy to read the whole paper
tho

You have me on steam

real name
first name

My first name is nayR

That's more like Chillwave

@Phase ??

10:44 PM
@BalarkaSen ik, I like it though, and it's relatively close
@0celo7 fine my names Jakob

@ACuriousMind Ok are you getting CS:GO?
@Phase thanks

or Jake, idm

anyways, I'm gonna go ahead and assume they mean radius of curvature and be done with it

Phase is Jake Paul

I have it installed already

10:45 PM
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT

@BalarkaSen my last name sounds similar to paul kinda

@Phase I can't play rn

@0celo7 is it gonna take that long?

no. 12MB/s

How big even is it

10:46 PM
I'va gotta get food and don't want to have headphone hair
6GB

fair
i mean, maybe we should do it tomorrow
It's like 11pm here. I could pull an all nighter but I'm concerned I'll mess up the good flow I've had with sleep lately

I got 7.5 hours of sleep last night and feel great
amazing what sleep does

@0celo7 I guess I will

Good point I only need like 6 hours
and I gotta get up at like 9

@ACuriousMind :)
you've got that GDP money now

10:48 PM
I'll be fine for a bit
@0celo7 you got a discord or something

I'm gonna play ACO for a bit.
Destroying Roman forts is good fun

Ah shit my dc pic has my ex in it, feels bad. Gotta change that shit pronto
Gimme your dc tho

My ex shows up on my phone every time I go to photos
shrug

Are you also too lazy to delete photos
Because that's what I'm like

Delete? Why would I do that?

10:49 PM
Idk, for me it brings back bad feelings
If the relationship was good, it makes me feel sad, if it was bad it makes me feel annoyed

I'm a psychopath, it just annoys me.

I guess I'm conditionally psychopathic

sadbois here

@0celo7 gimme your f[redacted]ng $\enclose {horizontalstrike}{money}$ discord name

I don't have one!

10:51 PM
I dont understand MathJax.

You need superior intelligence for that

Oh, you guys dont voice chat? Fair

We do

I thought I watched enough Rick and Morty :(

I just make a new account each time

10:52 PM
@Phase Ah, no, ocelot just doesn't understand discord :P

i have discord but i use it for memes, not gaming

Back in my day we used teamspeak

what's to understand? You make an account, log in, and call people or join servers

and before that we used Skype
and before that we used Xbox live

*ps party chat
if you're a real gentleman of taste

10:53 PM
PS was for the heck bois
Xbox is for men

Wow take that back

you'll have to get ACM to do your dirty work

@ACuriousMind can you unclog my toilet

ok, so is dircord a website or an app?

App, I'll give you a link gimme a sec

10:54 PM
downloading

Oh, you managed on your own, I'm impressed

oh no

nevermind

I have fortran homework

so no cheeki breeki?

10:56 PM
well I said I wouldn't be playing for a while anyway

How long we talking? Ideally I wanna head to bed around 3am

wtf
idk like 2 hours tops

These message timers and edit timers are really annoying

Fair, I'll stay up then

10:57 PM
this is vaporwave

they are. I wonder why they're even there. I probably have the most messages and I still get them
@BalarkaSen this stuff isn't bad
just boring
@Phase whats your discord name

yeah I have listened to that song

I'm about to get banned

Post Malone is not bad

I'm not really a fan of Post Malone

10:59 PM
quick!

I just find it kinda inaffectual
Uhhh hang on

I like him because of the memes, not music

Jake#1078

wtf discord says I have an account
halp
