is SO(k, n-k) is subgroup of GL(n, R) no matter what positive integer k is?

@ACuriousMind why was my comment here deleted? physics.stackexchange.com/questions/369631/…

user228700
Hello, everyone! :-)
4

Hi :-)

user228700
Wadup?

user228700
@Balarka: You around?

1:12 PM
Chillin, you?

user228700
Lol, pretty much, really.

user228700
Ooh, someone starred that! :-P

user228700
WHERE ARE ALL OF THE PEOPLE

@0celo7 all part of the spacetime is locally flat conspiracy!
@Kaumudi.H Afternoon :-)

user228700
Oh, hihi! :-)

user228700
1:16 PM
How goes it?

Pretty good. It's a beautiful sunny day and I'm about to go off for a cycle ride.

user228700
Ah, lovely :-)

(which will include buying lunch on the way :-)

@JohnRennie Why do you insist on triggering me

user228700
Riight, of course! Have you decided what to buy?

user228700
1:17 PM
@0celo7: Yello!

Easy target?

@Kaumudi.H Hi
long time no see

@0celo7 to be fair Carroll's comment is carefully stated and is precise. He's saying spacetime is locally indistinguishable from a flat spacetime.

user228700
@0celo7 Yupp! How are you?

@JohnRennie I think we should drop this before I call you something nasty. It honestly makes me mad -- that's complete bullshit and I've explained why many times.
At this point you're just repeating it to piss me off.

1:19 PM
@0celo7 but I agree with you. Physicists are very lazy about terminology.
Spacetime isn't flat. The curvature invariants aren't zero.

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Hi! How's life? :D

I'm not trying to piss you off.

@Kaumudi.H Overworked, but good. You?

user228700
@0celo7 That's nice :-) Same, really; my semester is about to end but finals are just around the corner!

user228700
@Blue Hey, man! :-) Life is OK! And yours? Is your semester over yet?

1:20 PM
Chill
When do the finals end?

I thought we'd agreed on this. Measurements of curvature typically measure the Christoffel symbols, and the Fermi normal coordinates make them zero. That's why the measurement cannot detect the curvature.

@JohnRennie That doesn't make sense because curvature is contained in the 1-jet of the Christoffels.

user228700
@skullpatrol December 18th!

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Same as yours. Semester will be dismissed next week. And exams start from 1st December

Anonymous
Will end on 14th

1:21 PM
the derivative, rather

user228700
@Blue Oh, wow!

without that you're not measuring curvature

user228700
What have you been up to?

@0celo7 curvature measurements basically measure tidal forces.
Who flagged Ryan's reply to me?

@JohnRennie Yeah, and that's basically the Ricci tensor

1:23 PM
Honestly, you thought that was genuinely offensive?

I'm gonna get banned
I hate this chat
why can't people man up and tell me to go to hell

Relax pal

this flagging nonsense is complete trash

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H Lot of things actually. I have at least started to realize which subjects I enjoy and which ones I don't :P

Some people urgently need to get a sense of perspective
4

1:23 PM
wow these flags

Time out people

@JohnRennie What was flagged?

a discussion about physics so heated that it turned into a fight!

And we've already agreed that swear words are not a reason to flag unless they are being used aggressively.

Anonymous
@Kaumudi.H And are you learning any new CS stuff?

Other than the syllabus things

user228700
@Blue Ah, haha, that's cool!

Anonymous
And what about CN ? :)

user228700
I don't enjoy any of the subjects I currently have, lol.

Please do not cheapen the flagging system for things that aren't genuinely offensive.

1:26 PM
Okay, I don't think dwelling on it is going to do any good. Let's learn our lessons from this episode and move on.

@Hakase sorry you got dragged into this ... Some of our room members are a bit flag happy.

user228700
@Blue: No, man, not really; I haven't even had the time to shower on some days!

this is my third time today visiting another room due to trivial flags
idk but maybe there should be some update about these chat flags

@Hakase the flagging system could really do with some attention.

like restrict them to moderators only

1:26 PM
Maybe there should be 24-hour bans on people after 3 trivial flags.

Were the other flags the posts in Russian?

yes
the russian SO chat room

People are getting hyper sensitive.

@Hakase I saw a couple of those, but how I'm supposed to judge a post written in Russian I'm not sure :-)

not quite, there is an issue with a troll user and I think he's still present and flagging some posts he doesn't like
for some reason when people see a post in a language they don't understand, they approve the flag

Anonymous
1:28 PM
@Kaumudi.H Uh oh :/ Yeah, I do realize that staying alone in hostel and having to do all your own work along with studies can be difficult. I hope you can make out some time to learn things which you are actually interested in. Good luck!

it happened to me in the very same room :p

@Hakase yeah, I'd advise just ignoring flags in languages you don't understand.

I just posted a russian translated version of xkcd about free speech and voila − 30 minute timeout

@Blue Maybe the issue is being a hostel to begin with. Sounds horror-movie like.

user228700
@Blue Yes, yes, I hope for the same! Thanks! :-)

1:29 PM
Ouch!

user228700
What have you been learning?

@Kaumudi.H are you back home yet?

I mean I speak russian but guess others who approved the flag on my message don't >.>

user228700
@JohnRennie No, I am to board the train tomorrow evening!! :-)

One more day to go
One more day of sorrow
One more day of this old dump
And I'll be gone tomorrow!
(silly rhyme from my primary school days)

1:31 PM
lol

kinda sad

@JohnRennie Oh god your crap comment is starred :P

@Kaumudi.H I and @Sid enrolled in an online machine learning and data mining course which begins in January end. We were planning to make a chat room for discussing the lectures. If you find it interesting you can join us! Oh, and as far as I'm concerned I've been learning some bits of extra math and physics for my internship next year. A couple of professors at my uni and a nearby institute have been helping me with that.

@0celo7 oh well, at least we fought off the troll! :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie Haha! :-)

user228700
1:34 PM
@Blue Wow, that sounds incredibly interesting and promising, too! :-o

user228700
I didn't know that you'd managed to bag an internship this early on!

Right I'm off. Lunch calls.

cya
Enjoy.

user228700
@JohnRennie Have a nice day! :-)

@Kaumudi.H Well, I mailed a LOT of people :P Only a minute fraction of them replied to me. And a fraction of those people accepted to help me out.

@Kaumudi.H I don't know as of yet. But probably something related to QM, stat mech, or thermo (That's what I've been instructed to learn). Basically take part in the professor's research in order to help them out (so that I learn something in the process)

These are the selection exams for the finals

why do you people freak out hearing that

I've literally never heard of such a thing before in my whole life.

@BalarkaSen Sleep deprivation, hunger and finals, lol.

don't do that. As a man who has been to the farthest extremes of sleep deprivation, I know for a fact that it's not good for physical or mental health.
neither is starvation, but yeah

How long did you go without sleep?
:^)

I was so glad to be rid of it...only to realise that I have it next sem! ;_;

All I know is you can die faster from sleep deprivation than starvation.

I indulge into my sleeplessness high in a very controlled fashion

user228700
@Balarka: Having listened to this quite recently, your feats are starting to scare me a little.

Sure sleeping a little less every day works up to a point.

oh I have heard of this guy

user228700
2:02 PM
Yeah?

I thought he established that long-time sleeplessness doesn't have significant health effects, though
Like, wasn't that part of the objective of the experiment?
(Except getting a world record :P)

Do you get two weeks off?

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen We don't even know if that account is completely true. Often, when I don't sleep for long, unknowingly I doze off for like 4-5 mins. And unless someone around you isn't noticing you very carefully, they can never be sure that you're completely awake. The brain has it's ways of preventing damage (safety measures)

You can sometimes even doze off with your eyes half open

@BalarkaSen :( That sounds bad. Sodepur area indeed has a lot of mosquitoes. My grandparents' house is there too (and several people in their apartment also had dengue in the past few months). Wear long trousers and full sleeves. Be safe!

Anonymous
Recently three profs at my uni had dengue too

Anonymous
Some sort of epidemic

It has certainly reached an epidemic status, even though the authority is not prepared to admit it.

They don't admit anything.

2:20 PM
The mosquitoes in Sodepur area are usually not "Aedes Aegypti". We have never actually had a dengue outbreak in Sodepur in the past few years

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen Yeah, I don't know what the scientific explanation behind the sudden occurrence is :/

Look, the problem is not even dengue. The authority has been showcausing medical professionals for frequently recommending people to do the relevant tests to identify if a certain patient as dengue-infected
That makes the whole thing much scarier

Anonymous
Government plan? Agh, everything is possible!

I mean I am not spewing a conspiracy theory; the CM has said this in public
If you want a believable conspiracy theory, however: There's been rumors of an unidentified fever flying around in WB lately, which I am sure you have heard. I believe that's a cover-up.
It's really nothing other than dengue.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms typically begin three to fourteen days after infection. This may include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. Recovery generally takes two to seven days. In a small proportion of cases, the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs. Dengue is spread by several species of mosquito...

The unidentified fever part isn't believable, true

In fact I hate the current WB government so much that if I started to speak something about them, I'd get banned. Most of their policies are ridiculous. And our chief minister can just speak nonsense.

Anonymous
They have indeed been trying hard to cover up things

@BalarkaSen I need to learn homotopy and K theory
help

Well, I don't hate them. I find them quite interesting and entertaining, actually.
I think they are not even hundredth of a threat than that of BJP
But that's where it's scary; BJP is bound to win the elections in '19.
@0celo7 Hatcher "VBKT"

What's the meaning of this statement in C: $ ./a.out <in.dat >out.dat? What does the $ symbol mean?

That's a command line prompt

Anonymous
@Slereah Oh, we should use it while executing from cmd?

Anonymous
I need to read about this

Anonymous
hmm

Anonymous
3:58 PM
@Slereah Do I have to enter $ ./a.out <in.dat >out.dat just after writing gcc -o <filename> <filename>.c (while running the C program from windows cmd)? I don't know how this thing works and can't find much reference online :/

Anonymous
in.dat is the file from which I'm taking input

Anonymous
And out.dat is the file where I want to write the output (say)

4:16 PM
@Blue < and > redirect stdin and stdout respectively.
<in.dat makes you app read from the file in.dat instead of reading what you type at the console.
Likewise >out.dat makes the program write its output to the file out.dat instead of writing to the console.

@Blue I see my chance to "vote to close this question because I'm not human" has already passed :P

Anonymous
@JohnRennie Oh! And what is a.out ? They are calling it executable file generated from .c file. I can't understand what that is....

With GNU C when you compile a program the default name for the executable file is a.out

But, yeah, I think concern even for a butterfly is not necessarily a bad trait. OP made a mistake to post it here, but they didn't deserve the scorn heaped upon them in the comments.

Anonymous
@JohnRennie What is an executable file in the first place, and where do I find it? Suppose I have a hello.c file stored on my "Desktop". I compile it from command prompt using gcc. Then what?

Anonymous
4:23 PM
The wikipedia article on "Executable file" is too vague...

@Blue Do you know what compilation is i.e. why we need to compile programs?

Anonymous
Not properly perhaps. It processes a .c file and produces an "object" file (?) I never noticed that "object" file. Is that called a.out? I never saw any .out file being created

Anonymous
Lemme compile a sample code and check now

@Blue Ah, don't think about files or C specifically. Why does there need to be a "compilation step" anyway? Why can't you just type code and have the computer do what you've told it to?

@ACuriousMind Damn, David and my monopoly on giving programming advice is under threat :-)

4:29 PM
@JohnRennie I think I've given C advice to Blue before, in tandem with dmckee, so your monopoly wasn't so strong to begin with ;)
(Or did you mean dmckee with "David"? It gets confusing :P)

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind While compiling, the source code (human-readable) code is translated to machine readable code

@Blue Aha, so there's your answer - the "executable" is that machine-readable code.

@ACuriousMind I did mean dmckee
@ACuriousMind just don't start learning colloid science! :-)

@JohnRennie Don't worry, your soap is safe...for now ;)

Anonymous
Oh, oh! The .out does get generated! Found it. Now, where/how do I enter the ./a.out <in.dat >out.dat in the command prompt?

4:36 PM
Just type it

Anonymous
@JohnRennie First I'd have to navigate to the folder those files are located, or no?

@JohnRennie I have input and output files in form as .txt files. I don't know what this .dat extension is all about? Is it necessary to change .txt to .dat before executing the command ./a.out <in.dat >out.dat

I'm running a simple code to sort integers from one .txt file and put it in another
