12:20 AM
Just got Kolmogorov's book on Real Analysis
let's see if it's any good

12:36 AM
@BernardoMeurer Get the book on Kolmogorov complexity while you're at it!

@G.Bergeron Too late now, what's that about? :)

@BernardoMeurer about Kolmogorov complexity
not by the guy, though

The springer one?

Maybe read about the topic before...
This character : \u{00A0} is evil!
Really, pure evil! An invisible character in most editors that causes problem with latex!

Bah, 74 bucks :/
I gotta save up for that
Seems super interesting though
I also gotta read the book my Algebra prof recommended

12:42 AM
@BernardoMeurer Yeah, buy it if you're really interested in the topic, but I suggest to look into the topic in any case

She said this book is what helped her the most throughout her PhD

Seems nice, but isn't that what doing math is supposed to bring you?

Almost bought that one a couple years ago!
Dover knows how to seduce me!

It was so cheap I couldn't let it pass
I've been wanting to read some topology anyway, want to know what it's about
Holy fuck, Kolmogorov complexity is awesome
must...not...buy...book

12:46 AM
Damn, at this time at work I'm always hungry and the only thing available near me is food from the machine -_-. I guess I'll go grab an energy bar

@G.Bergeron In the past 3 days all my meals were from a machine :)

@BernardoMeurer I agree, it will probably take a more central place in my research program... It enables an almost absolute definition of information. What's nice is that you can then reformulate stuff like statistical mechanics in that language, and then notions such as micro/macro states become almost obvious
@BernardoMeurer 8\

@G.Bergeron That's some really tremendous stuff, thanks for introducing me

@BernardoMeurer At least I bought a coffee machine for my office, so that's covered

@G.Bergeron Had a chem exam today, slept in school over the weekend, everything is closed
Learning electrochemistry by yourself with some slides and and a problem set with no answers takes time

12:50 AM
This might interest you scottaaronson.com/blog/?p=762
I don't agree with the whole of his approach, but the main use of Kolmogorov complexity is explained

I'm getting sadder and sadder for not having gone into Computer Science
@DanielSank I should've listened to you
Although I'm not sure I'd have yielded a good Computer Scientist
and maybe I'll be a good Engineer
Anyways, I'll read that

@BernardoMeurer I wouldn't have liked that at all myself! In a way, I think approaching deep questions like that with primarily a CS background is the basis of where I disagree with some points of Aaronson.

@G.Bergeron Engineering is a meme though
It's the biggest meme ever

@BernardoMeurer I love to thinker with stuff but I love to ponder stuff more! :P

@G.Bergeron I heard a kid in civil engineering start a sentence with "Screw that! Just set pi to 5 and it won't fall!"

12:58 AM
@BernardoMeurer I know, but it DOES ''not fall'' in the end, no?
@BernardoMeurer In the end if you do get into CS and later contribute to pondering on consciousness-related questions, PLEASE do not fall into the trap of ignoring/not understanding what David Chalmers means by the ''hard problem of consciousness''!

I don't think I care too much about consciousness to be honest
not yet at least
What bothers me is complexity
I think about what makes things complex every day
It's the one problem that makes me sleepless at times

@BernardoMeurer They all do, for me

@G.Bergeron All problems make you sleepless?

@BernardoMeurer Again, metaphorically

I got worried for a second, I was being literal :P

1:03 AM
But I do end up staying up until the sun because of those many problems...

@BernardoMeurer What makes things complex is clearly that they aren't simple :P

@ACuriousMind You and my mother would enjoy chatting it seems

It's just that at some point, if you don't sleep, you loose your sanity... not that productive

@BernardoMeurer That's...a weird sentence

@G.Bergeron I never had it, it's okay I guess
@ACuriousMind I slept 5 hours in the past 3 days, cut me some slack plox

1:05 AM
::picks up knife, starts chopping slack::

@BernardoMeurer I surprisingly can be really effective with very little sleep. After years of doing it chronically, you pay a price
Trust me

@G.Bergeron I already have grey hair
I'm 18
@ACuriousMind .-.

@BernardoMeurer That's just genetic and stress, I meant more internally.
@ACuriousMind Can you make a soup out of the left-over slack?

I'm literally nothing without my neighbor to make me food and take care of me
plz come back

@BernardoMeurer 0_0

1:09 AM
@G.Bergeron Probably, but slack is best enjoyed raw with a dash of lemon juice

@ACuriousMind And cilantro!
I feel young! I'm drinking energy drinks.
That makes me cool, right!

Red Bull doesn't work well for me
Monster does though
probably the dosage

''for trying to have their brain and eat it in precisely the above way'' from the article I linked
@BernardoMeurer We have this nice natural/hippy brand sold over here. Mostly just caffein and green tea extract for the L-theanine

@ACuriousMind University is driving me absolutely nuts
And I got invited to join a research group
I want to join, but I might also just die

@BernardoMeurer Isn't it fun! 8D
Join the madhouse!

1:16 AM
I have like one exam every week, so it's basically learn everything, do exam, forget everything, repeat
It's killing me

@BernardoMeurer Forget the forget thing

Well the forget part isn't mandatory, but ends up happening
Specially on subjects like Chem
At least next semester I have Programming
I think I'll rek that subject

Other point of wisdom: ''Conditional probabilities are not universally applicable!''

What do you mean by that?

@BernardoMeurer Exactly what the words say... The unbridled use of conditional probabilities is the source of much of the hocus-pocus from badly applied statistics

1:21 AM
We can discuss this further in 2 years when I have my probabilities and statistics course
I'm so angry about having passed chemistry
I didn't learn anything
I should've failed
this is the stupidest thing

@BernardoMeurer Only if you read up on your own about the interpretational issues in probability
@BernardoMeurer Yes, but GPA is God in the end. It is stupid, but yeah.

My GPA wasn't even good
I just passed
It was just such a waste of my time

@BernardoMeurer Better than the one for F surely

I did nothing the past 6 months
My kernel has no work on it
I couldn't implement Schonhage-Strassen as I wanted
I couldn't build a Collatz calculator

@BernardoMeurer Isn't this at least partly your fault?

1:24 AM
@G.Bergeron Not because I didn't want to, I had to study for all my subjects
and I'm fine with studying for Digital Systems, Analysis and Algebra

I was speaking of you not learning anything in chem

but Chemistry? I could've been doing things that actually matter
@G.Bergeron Well, I learned some things, all by myself though
I learned about the PN Junction and about semiconductors
But I had to learn how to draw molecular orbital diagrams, and memorize how to apply schrodinger, and things like that

Every topic matters. My unattainable goal is to be able to sit in any talk of any discipline and be able to somewhat follow along.

@G.Bergeron I couldn't care less about some topics

2:05 AM
That goal is somewhat attainable given a year's practice, I usually attend public lectures by my uni of different faculties, even outside science
Right now, besides my chemistry expertise, I know some stuff in physics, and a little in <insert pratically any subject conceived by humanity>

@Secret What if I insert bioinformatics there?

@Secret I am sorry but allow me to say: BS!
I'm not talking about public lectures... Go to any technical cutting-edge conference and tell me that

Well, you have a protein, you tried to feed it primary structure into a computer, and analyse for patterns in its sequence and predict its secondary and higher structures, how it binds with drugs or orther substrates etc.

@BernardoMeurer that's usually true ;-)

I have been to one environmental microbiology conference, one wolfram and one mathlab conference

2:08 AM
@DanielSank Indeed :/

Yes I know many things at that level, but with all the jargon, conventions and whatnot that I lack, how can I follow along?

For me, I just talk to people, and as they share their research you will slowly learn the jargon. Background reading of their research also helps. Cannot say I am very good at it, but enough to understand some of the stuff in their fields

I got a gift from GitHub today
an Activity book
like, a coloring book from GitHub featuring octocats everywhere

Most of the time I am more like can understand their language more than being able to speak it, my maths background is one example of that

@0celo7 I honestly love your sister

2:11 AM
I am not sure about other groups, but scientists in general (at least present in australian conferences) love to share their researches

@Secret I do this too... Maybe we meant something different by following along the talk... I can read papers in most discipline with time, but that is not the same thing as being aware of the issues a particular researcher is tackling and why he is doing what he does

That usually take much longer. For science it is easier, as you talk to more people in those fields, over time you start to see trends and patterns, and you will start to have some idea why he/she is doing the research
In my opinion, that is usuaully very hard for the theoretical physics and maths field, because a lot of the ideas that motivate their research is buried in nested jargons, and it took time to decipher those
other sciences such as chemistry, does not have that much jargons that are nested within other jargons
That's why for example, I have a hard time understanding the researches done by Danu, I believe when I have solidify my background on vector bundles and differential geoemtry, I might be able to start understood his

For some researchers, you can actually ask them why or what motivate their researches, and they will often happily told you some of the motivation and background behind it

@Secret Ok, maybe, but do understand the way you are phrasing that you are implying, first, that this is already done for you, second, that you basically can attain research level in all research disciplines in one year
@Secret The point was not being able to know but knowing already
I did say it was a totally unrealistic goal
To be honest, your first comment came out to me as extremely pedantic. I understand now we probably meant something different.

My major problem had always been: Text communication. I am actually better that presenting and illustrating than communicating ideas via text only. That is something I still working on

2:22 AM
@Secret Fair enough

As unrealistic as the goal sounds, I think if one is really interested in those other fields, try one's best to try to understood at least one. Given today's highly collaborative and multidiscipline research, having more than one field knowledge in stoke might promote some crossover of ideas tha might make one problem that seemed intractible in the field to be solved by some knowledge of another.
For me most of my studies are interest motivated. Hope I can still be able to said so when I do my first job after PhD...

@Secret For several fields, it is very much possible and encouraged, but I really meant ALL human endeavours

Indeed

@BernardoMeurer I'm envious

2:38 AM
@DanielSank Michelle said I was too stressed a few weeks ago, I guess this is her solution lol

@BernardoMeurer Michelle?

@G.Bergeron Friend

It's a cold December month here... Still below -10 C and we already had a few times below -20 C.

user116211
@G.Bergeron You in Siberia?

No
I didn't say -40 C

user116211
2:49 AM
okay

Just Canada, in the south-east

user116211
ohh

I swear to god, if I ever get a good job I'm strapping a model jet turbine to a bicycle and using it as my main transport

@BernardoMeurer Thought about that... but then I decided I liked living

@G.Bergeron I'm okay with dying like that

2:51 AM
And the exercise that comes from biking (which I can't do in winter :( )
@BernardoMeurer Really?

COLLEGE STUDENT DIES ON JET POWERED BICYCLE
Badass
@G.Bergeron Meh, I think so, yeah

Darwin award material

I think you mistyped Nobel

Anyway the plan will get policed into oblivion
But you know some people did that, right?

Yeah, but they:
1. Used a pulse jet (Colin Furze)
2. Only did it for a little while as a test (JetCat)

user116211
2:53 AM
@BernardoMeurer There are better daredevil-ways to die, i can assure.

I don't know of anyone who properly built one
Like, got a custom bike frame made
and so on

@BernardoMeurer Ok if you use a pulse jet in front of my house everyday, I swear I'll put a convenient bump in your way.

user116211
@BernardoMeurer I remember I saw sort of this thing in Discovery Channel.

@G.Bergeron By the time you come out to see what is that noise I'll be too far

@BernardoMeurer I'll just scheme for next day

Optically triggered bump

@Secret Pulse engine
As I had said, and that's Colin, exactly who I had mentioned

user116211
Anyway, @dmckee/ @DavidZ, could you lend me some mins for some private talk? I would very much appreciate that.

I'd rather have a hyperloop than jet powered bicycle!
@BernardoMeurer Or even better, virtual telepresence

What a beauty

2:59 AM
@BernardoMeurer On this, we agree

Only 11.000€ !
:P

You can build a shitty one with a diesel truck compressor
I'm sure with some proper gearing you could ride with that

A shitty one won't look badass though
I think the trick will be to use ceramic bearings
on the wheels

@BernardoMeurer Meh, depends who you ask

But then idk how the cube mechanism on the gearing will hold

3:02 AM
@BernardoMeurer In any case, I'm not a fan of big loud noises in general
cube?

Dunno the name in english
the mechanism that lets the wheel spin while the pedal is not moving (in one direction)

clutch
Ah no you mean the sprocket wheel
Nope, apparently I don't know the name either

Yeah lol :P
We call it a cube in portuguese

Ratchet

Exactly!

3:05 AM
I personally call that a ''tick tick tick'' wheel
As in clocks

user116211
@G.Bergeron ;)

@G.Bergeron Yeah, idk how that will handle higher speeds

@BernardoMeurer Ratchet straps are awesome!!! Once, to tighten a gas pipe screw connection that was leaking even when using 4 people to counter turn to giant wrenches, we ratcheted the wrenches together and it worked! (The gas was propane for a flame effect)

user116211
@BernardoMeurer We all know he is the Dark Knight.

3:13 AM
@BernardoMeurer I don't have adblock at work... Less punchy

Dammit :/

@BernardoMeurer I got to hear George Clooney talk about Nespresso

@G.Bergeron At least he's pretty

user116211
@vzn Is JD somehow involved in that?

vzn
3:29 AM
@MAFIA36790 JD+peanut gallery right? :P

@vzn Stupid title and presentation, but to be honest I was never fond of dark matter as a particle approach...
JD?

Well, you know every news outlet is going to use headlines like "Was Einstein wrong?" to get attention

@DavidZ The point is that he wasn't ''wrong'' as much as Newton's mechanics is not ''wrong''. I get your point but those claims are damaging to the general understanding of the epistemologic strength of science as a whole.

vzn
@G.Bergeron JD is a prior chat oldtimer that is currently under heavy block/ sentence. somewhat like 0----7 (4x) chat.stackexchange.com/users/147022/john-duffield

3:32 AM
Yeah, can I know why, that 0---7 guy is banned? I keep hearing it

vzn
@G.Bergeron what claims? that einstein was wrong?

@vzn yes

@G.Bergeron oh, I agree. Claims of Einstein being wrong are just clickbait - sure they might be true, but the fact that they have to be claimed at all makes them seem more important than they are.

vzn
@G.Bergeron we all wish we knew, its not allowed to question that :|

@0celo7 We miss you

3:33 AM
@vzn It's not allowed (well... strongly discouraged, albeit technically allowed) to speculate. That's different from questioning.

@G.Bergeron He got banned because he called @DavidZ a pickle
He also said the name of the lord in vain
I'm certain

lol

also, EINSTEIN IS WRONG

vzn
@DavidZ fine, we can question but there will be no forthcoming answers by repeatedly asserted policy. (got dinged on this myself by ACM for seemingly innocuous comment) ... whole thing is "can of worms"...

@vzn puts back the can of worm in a delicate manner

3:34 AM
Yep. The mods do not publicly comment on suspensions.

@DavidZ Obviously, but I thought it would be obvious

They have an anonymous twitter account where they talk crap about the people they ban instead

vzn
@G.Bergeron theres a lot in the transcripts. 0----7 is a "colorful" individual. just like JD. both sometimes "too colorful" o_O ... (part of the "charm" one might say)

It's @realDonaldTrump

whatever happened to the "Ask Me Anything" idea @vzn ?

3:36 AM
@Pissedofflayman Someone asked too much

@vzn Yeah well JD said weird stuff on GR

@vzn You can question all you want, in the sense that if you have concerns that a suspension is not legitimate, you can raise those concerns (privately) with the people who have the ability to do something about it: us (mods) and the SE team.

vzn
@Pissedofflayman hey thx for asking. its just on pause. did you notice it somehow? DS lined up a guest months ago but hasnt pulled trigger yet. feel free to suggest guests. its not easy to keep the ball rolling. coincidentally G. said he would consider it. try nudging ppl any way you can.

Thanks for replying :-)

Hi, @BernardoMeurer.

3:38 AM
@vzn I haven't forgot. I'm still looking at it

@vzn Just accept it, the mods are all AIs built by Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Mussolini, and that horrible picture of Beyoncé, I'm certain
@DanielSank Sup

In which country is it morning now?

@BernardoMeurer Nothin'.

vzn
@DavidZ ahem, have not really ever questioned moderator judgements myself in here in case anyone hadnt noticed, there are some tough calls to make, and its like sports referees, it seems the fans will end up hating them merely for making the calls. maybe do question the circumstances somewhat (which are inherently mysterious), but not the calls. but maybe its too close for there to be any difference.

This chat just came alive

3:39 AM
Oh yeah?

Probably 'cuz I'm here.

@DanielSank Can't sleep

Daniel "Life of the Hbar" Sank.

@DanielSank Was about to say that

3:40 AM
@DanielSank Oh knock it off :P

vzn
@DanielSank everywhere I go... people are like, we're so glad x

@BernardoMeurer Go talk to Nika.

She's in Slovenia :(
y u do dis man

@BernardoMeurer Go to Slovenia.

@BernardoMeurer Why bilingual?

3:41 AM
@G.Bergeron because you stink are a french canadian
@DanielSank I go to Brazil in like 2 days

@BernardoMeurer Nice.

Do you think this is crap : walmart.ca/en/ip/…

@G.Bergeron I would say it certainly looks like it
@DanielSank Still haven't gotten my Google Account back :/

And I miss Nika too, she got me to behave

3:43 AM
I want a wireless keyboard with integrated touchpad. I have been ruined by apple's touchpads

@BernardoMeurer wat?

@DanielSank Like get back home in reasonable hours, eat well, leave my room on weekends, things like that

oh
Yeah, you should do those things.

I've been wanting a good 60% mechanical keyboards
Did you go talk to Mike Moffatt?

I bought a shitty wired keyboard but wondering if other options would be better...
@BernardoMeurer Such a hipster

3:45 AM
@G.Bergeron Hm?

Mike Moffatt? No.

@BernardoMeurer '' mechanical keyboards''

@G.Bergeron I like the clicks, I have some issues with nerve ends on my fingertips
Being able to hear the activation through the music/headphones is very nice
stronger feedback too

Ok, ok

vzn
@G.Bergeron have you ever heard of a "kuhnian shift" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradigm_shift

3:48 AM
@vzn Somewhat, yeah

vzn
@G.Bergeron just think of the (pop science) media in terms of this game & it all becomes clear en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_whispers

user116211
@G.Bergeron India.

@vzn I think it's more than that, I criticize the use of wordings like :''XYZ theory is wrong''.
Science is iterative ideally

vzn
@G.Bergeron right/ agreed. kuhnian theory explains/ delves into at depth what youre pointing out. but also misses some of it. found a neat essay by asimov on this topic once.

user228700
3:54 AM
@JohnRennie@Kenshin: I finally finished the chapter and I have made about 60 pages of notes for it. Lookie here:

user116211
@BernardoMeurer We too.

By the way, should I buy .xyz domain name?

@G.Bergeron I have an xyz domain and I quite like it :)

user228700

3:56 AM
@BernardoMeurer I was wondering what to buy for a personal domain, yeah

@Kaumudi.H Your handwriting is cute

user228700
::Wipes off sweat from forehead::

user116211
@BernardoMeurer ;P

user228700
@BernardoMeurer Oh, hey, thanks! :-)

user116211
@DanielSank o/

3:57 AM
@G.Bergeron DO ET :)
It's easy to get good names
(for now)

vzn
@Kaumudi.H rather suggestive o_O

Eventually I'll purchase meuer.com
When I get a Turing award or a job at McDonald's

vzn
@BernardoMeurer the pays a lot different on those 2 things :P

user228700
@vzn Huh? O_o

@vzn My mother told me to stay real

3:58 AM
@vzn And more so, if you include precision and domain of relevance in the description of a theory, it kind of becomes just ''true''

vzn
@BernardoMeurer mcdonalds is plan B if you flunk out of QM/ calculus/ spherical integrals (saw all your angst on that) ... ps real students dont need any @#%& teachers :P
