7:00 PM
Pentanone in itself makes no sense

user253310
You should tell where the carbonyl lies @ArmaGeddON

@ArmaGeddON Why?

user253310
At which number carbon

@ArmaGeddON Never gave attention to MAT. Once I gave, it went to be one of the best :)

"carbonyl" plz class 10 standard, never even heard that
btw suppose its pentane with ketone functional group

7:02 PM
All chem is greek to me :P

user253310
Pentanone may refer to the following ketones containing five carbon atoms: 2-Pentanone (Methyl propyl ketone, MPK) 3-Methyl-2-butanone (Methyl isopropyl ketone, MIPK) 3-Pentanone (Diethyl ketone, DEK) == See also == Cyclopentanone...

user253310
@SwapnilDas Chemistry is the most important subject in JEE ...fyi....

Idc. I'll study from 11th.

Swapnil
Das
buddy

Bro don't consume so many sentences :P

7:04 PM
@BernardoMeurer There were things from my introductory chemistry class that didn't gel for me until I learned a bunch of atomic physics in a spectroscopy lab in grad school.

even revise IX and X class chemistry before proceeding to XI if u really don't find it interesting

Yes sure :)

But then I managed to spill strong acids on my skin five (5, damnit!) times in intro chem lab, too, so it's just as well I wasn't interested in continuing.

first Chemistry was like rubbish for me but since i started understanding it, it became quite interesting

I hate experiments :P

7:05 PM
btw i reffered to 2-Pentanone

@ArmaGeddON Yeah, it's all much more interesting since I understood why they were going on about all that tripe.

Swapnil are u preparing for FTRE too?

No bro.
I want a deep sleep on 25th dec, actually.
@dmckee I don't find a charm in it, actually.

user253310
@SwapnilDas Soon you will. Just wait till 11 th :) Mechanisms in organic chemistry need even more creativity than calculus :P

oh no i ran out of coffee

7:09 PM
I've been revising PCM from FA1 to till date non-stop, just get up to eat food, average sleeping time 3:00 am, asking problems on chatrooms, doing everything possible my life sucks, now ask me how m i still alive

@AccidentalFourierTransform RIP to Coffee. (Return if possible)

for my living? (guessing)

my neighbor has open 4G Jio and i am download games non-stop
downloading *

user253310
7:10 PM
@ArmaGeddON Be prepared to do that for the next two years :D

that scares me dora

@ArmaGeddON You should enjoy that.

enjoying B)
i've used 3 UBS extension chords to receive signals :p

dora?

user253310
7:12 PM
@ArmaGeddON yes?

what was your % in XII?

user253310
@ArmaGeddON I haven't given 12 th till now :P

user253310
Board exams are in March or April

Now don't ask me my 10th percentage lol

7:13 PM
i thought u have dropped for jee

user253310
@ArmaGeddON What made you think so?

No he's smart :)

yh, seems so :)
i wasted my life in 3 parts

Ready to listen how.

1st Programming
2nd Hacking
3rd Clash of Clas
Clans*

7:15 PM
Sad.
Difficult to get over addictions, actually.
I also have some.

but i learnt something for each
Programming - Learn how to wake till morning
Hacking - Keep Calm
Clash of clans - uhh never mind :p

Hmm.
Just kick out these stuff after 10th.
They'll kill your time like anything.

all kicked since a month :(

Oh!
Great then.
For waking till morning, try Irodov.

Irodov?

7:18 PM
Yes, just a book of physics problems.

user253310
@ArmaGeddON Ignore that suggestion :P

Resident Evil 6 downloading complete

@Doraemonドラえもん Lol. Why?

Elder scrolls 4 on downloading :p
just googled irodov, he looks scary
i would rather stay away :P

Man it is a good book.
Solve one question everyday you'll get fairer skin lol @Doraemonドラえもん

user253310
7:20 PM
@SwapnilDas Experience says that Irodov is simply a waste of time for 11th graders...in 11th anyway you have a lot of Physics to learn.

That's why recommending in 10th bhai :P

user253310
You guys will be 11th in a few months :)

3 months can be at least 3 sections of Irodov.
(If you solve like a snail)

user253310
Well, you can go ahead if you wish. I was just giving my suggestion :)

i was actually very confident about my trigonometry, fiitjee ke module khole, aukat pata lag gai :p suggest me how to prepare trig. for FTRE

7:22 PM
@Doraemonドラえもん Which is valuable :)
@ArmaGeddON You have reference books?

i wish i had R.D. but too expensive

A Das Gupta, Arihant, Loney, TMH, Cengage, etc.?

i usually do maths from ncert, r.s. and some question banks
i have arihant at least

Arihant Trig right?

not enough, fiijee's level is way too high

7:24 PM
They copy from RD Sharma.
Never noticed?
11th grade RD sharma I mean obviously.

i don't have R.D.

Buy.

i am sharma but doesn't give me for free

Or study from Arihant?
It is way better than RD.

i do
actually i did

7:26 PM
amazon.in/Plane-Trigonometry-Part-1-S-Loney/dp/… You can at least afford 89 rupees, no?
Best for basics.

m saying it now 57th time, i have that book, and i have completed it!
i took that book from my friend Nakul G

Then why fear trigo!

Nakul Gupta (or G***u)
cuz i think arihant isnt enough

Brilliant.org
Solve trigo from here, then.

user253310
@ArmaGeddON Did you solve all the problems in Arihant Trigonometry ?

7:29 PM
Exactly, he must have been a stalwart then.

user253310
I feel that Arihant is more than enough

i did

Questions are of JEE level, still?

but when i opened Fiitjee modules i got all twisted

user253310
@SwapnilDas They are above JEE level.

user253310
7:30 PM
@ArmaGeddON Can I test your trig?

@Doraemonドラえもん Ohk yes I agree.

neh

Let him pose one.

user253310
Since you said that you completed Arihant

my tuition teacher made us complete arihant in summer holidays

7:31 PM
Arihant completion is really a big thing, I can only dream of that.

i forgot most of it also :/

@ArmaGeddON Name of author?

SL LONI

Of that arihant book^^
Mar tu!!

user253310
@ArmaGeddON Then it is same as not doing it :P

7:31 PM
I suspected that.
We are referring AMA!
Amit M Agarwal Trigonometry.

lol what?

user253310
I have that red white book at hand

@Doraemonドラえもん Bhai see.

user253310
Trying to select a question for Arma

user253310
:P

7:33 PM
He was referring Loney.
Bhai Arihant trig means always by AMA.
Loney is old fashioned CBSE level.

user253310
@SwapnilDas Oh...I thought he meant the Amit M's one

u were referring to this 600 badly fat book

yes!
JEE guys sweat to complete it.

user253310

@SwapnilDas Same here :p

7:34 PM
Your words gave me and @Doraemonドラえもん a partial heart stroke.

user253310
@SwapnilDas Which words ? :P

user253310
Haha

That he completed AMA Trig.

user253310
Loney is wayyyyyyyyyyyy easier

happens happens
:p

7:35 PM
:P

user253310
I really got a stroke

m good with NCERT :p

user253310
A 10 th grader completing that book

it has nice questions

user253310
OMG

7:36 PM
@Doraemonドラえもん Exactly.
@ArmaGeddON what?

NCERT has nice questions i said
at least they don't scare me a bit

I want sleep now, lest I should faint.

Bhai leave NCERT do Arihant.
Gn @ArmaGeddON and @Doraemonドラえもん

user253310
Goodnight @SwapnilDas and @ArmaGeddON

7:37 PM
i'll get that book from my tuition teacher

user253310
:)

@Doraemonドラえもん i ain't sleeping that early

user253310
@ArmaGeddON I just said goodnight :P

user253310
I didn't say anything about sleep :P

user253310
Even I will wake tonight :D

7:39 PM
btw, can u suggest me where to study combinations of resistance from?
i'll have electricity module tomorrow
will do it too

user253310
@ArmaGeddON Any class 12 physics book...

class 12?

user253310
that might help

user253310
for the advanced problems

wont they screw me?

user253310
7:41 PM
i dont think so

user253310
its easy

user253310
btw it is best to do your modules first

Hi.

i'll ask my mother to take out my sis's book tomorrow, she's sleeping now

user253310
@ArmaGeddON okay...i have to go now

user253310
7:42 PM
bye

user253310
:)

@Mahmoud hi
@Doraemonドラえもん bye :)
m also going, i wasted much time

user253310
Oh and the Cengage book is the best for resistance problems

user253310
The electrostatics and current book

user253310
by bm sharma

user253310
7:45 PM

user253310
@ArmaGeddON

user253310
bye now :)

8:11 PM
Hi, everybody.

hi
what's crackin

In Boston.
Things eaten so far:
Pizza, pastrami, bagel.
All things I can't get in California.

now Im hungry
thanks

You're welcome.

@DanielSank what's with the octopus btw?
You've probably been asked this before many times

8:21 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform Octopuses are amazing, interesting animals and I like them very much.

They have three hearts.
Their blood uses copper instead of iron for oxygen-binding, so its blue-green.
They can change color.
They're smart.

but they do something weird with their genitalia to reproduce, IIRC

Well, in some cases the male gives the female one of his arms, which contains gametes.
And she can store the gametes for a while before using them.

"detachable penis" according to google

8:26 PM
yup

it surely sounds like fun :D

8:44 PM
@DanielSank ...you can't get pizza in California?

no, it is illegal bc of the drought

9:00 PM
@ACuriousMind It's hard to get good pizza.
You can get "bagels" too, but they're not bagels.
They're round bread.

9:28 PM
hello
@DanielSank, my dad gets annoyed at the pizza here- he's from NJ and so is used to the best pizza

9:46 PM
@heather I sympathize

I am done with Chemistry!

Congratulations!
no more oompa-loompa professor

May we never again cross paths
Screw you $K_{\text{whatever}}$

how do you think it went?
the final exam, i mean.

Very bad, but I think I got the 7 I needed to pass

9:54 PM
well, that's good, at least

Then I'll take the recovery exams in january to improve my grades
but since I already passed it's easier

Congrats, bro.

awesome!!

10:10 PM
whoops

Q: Are metric tensors (or even pseudo-metric tensors) really metrics?

user12262In some discussions of metric tensors $g : TM_p \times TM_p \rightarrow \mathbb R$ (and even of pseudo-metric tensors, for instance in this answer), and of the corresponding first fundamental forms ${\rm d}s^2$, these (mathematical) objects are referred to as "metric". Is this serious and corre...

^shouldn't this be migrated to math.SE?

cool!

@heather definitely, yes
(I mean, the migration)

does the array environment belong inside an equation environment in latex?

10:16 PM
@heather it works, yes, but as to "belong"...
what are you trying to do?
99% of the time you're better off with align, pmatrix, or cases

and split
I use it all the time

@EmilioPisanty, create a matrix without using the amsmath package.

@AccidentalFourierTransform split? what's it do?
@heather pmatrix

pmatrix, okay, i'll look into that

I use it to align several columns
it is very useful

10:18 PM
+1 for \align

@heather not much to look into. $\begin{pmatrix}1&0\\0&1\end{pmatrix}$ $\begin{pmatrix}1&0\\0&1\end{pmatrix}$
@DanielSank wait, \align?

How is that different from \array?

I was talking about \begin{align}

@EmilioPisanty that's what I meant.

@heather don't do anything without using amsmath

10:20 PM
@DanielSank mathematicians and phycisists saying one thing and writing another and meaning another, and all that?
@heather what david said

@DavidZ, it's not for me, it's for some documentation on SO

@heather oh, wait, you said without?

i thought that amsmath was the only option when I wrote it a couple months ago, but I found out about the other options inadvertently, and so I'm updating it.

why, oh, why?

@EmilioPisanty I've lost track now, where did without come from.

10:21 PM
@heather Oh, are you talking about MathJax? All the important amsmath environments are included in MathJax.

@DavidZ, no, LaTeX, not MathJax.

@heather why are you trying to LaTeX stuff without amsmath?

@EmilioPisanty er, just... you know... a mistake.

@DavidZ, ^

@heather Then don't do anything without amsmath

10:23 PM
@DavidZ, but you can do stuff without amsmath, and since it's documentation, I thought it best to include the information.

@heather why?
the use case is nonexistent

@heather No. It's not.

@DavidZ ?

@heather it makes the docs confusing and actively misleading
if your maths has matrices in it, you're well past the point where you should be using amsmath

@EmilioPisanty maybe some journals require that amsmath not be used?

10:25 PM
@heather Then nobody should publish in those journals.

I guess, as long as it is encouraged to use amsmath, why is it a problem to give the option of not using amsmath for those extreme rare cases?

@heather in which case they likely have very specific document classes, which means that any given solution, as likely as not, will also break

It encourages bad typesetting

and frankly, if a journal required me to submit in a latex class incompatible with amsmath, I would either go elsewhere or (if really, really necessary) submit with a 'wrong' file
as would most others, I think

wow

10:27 PM
@heather it's not "encouraged" to use it, it is "enormously discouraged" to not use it when you do need it

i didn't realize that this was such a big deal.

it's that basic a building block

okay.

it's just essentially impossible to do maths on tex without those tools
ask around on chat.tex.se before you write anything (about latex$\setminus$amsmath)
make sure you say something nice about ducks first

I had a good analogy here, but it's NSFW :/

10:28 PM
okay
will do

@heather why are there pulsating blue dots in that post?

@heather Please do some GR magic and become 18, thx

@Pissedofflayman, pulsating blue dots...what?
@BernardoMeurer why?

@Pissedofflayman did you try clicking on them?
@heather so he can post whatever inappropriate thoughts he's dying to voice

@heather So I don't need to contain my profanity as much :P

10:30 PM
er...do you want me to leave the chat room for a few minutes or something?

No, should I? @EmilioPisanty

@Pissedofflayman if you want to keep the mystery, don't click on them
if you want to know what they are, do

@heather That won't help, it was directed at you :P
Make a note, ask me in 5(?) years

@BernardoMeurer, then just say it, I won't be offended
I've heard plenty of profanity

@heather I can't, I have jesus in my heart

10:31 PM
@BernardoMeurer What you can post here does not depend on who is currently there. If you wouldn't post it while heather is here, don't post it when she's not either.
3

@EmilioPisanty they look too much like "click bait" :P

@BernardoMeurer ::head starts spinning:: confusion

@ACuriousMind That's not the point, the point is although I'll tell you to f**k off and lick a lolypop I wouldn't say that to her
Although what I wanted to say had nothing to do with those examples

just say it @BernardoMeurer, now I'm curious
=P

@heather We will go back to it in 5 years

10:34 PM
::sighs:: very well, master
::retracts lightsaber::

Which reminds me, I gotta watch rebel one
@G.Bergeron I told you Arrival was absolute utter shit!

Omg
that is glorious

A star :D I feel popular (see mother?)

Carolina is my one true love I goddamn swear

10:41 PM
@BernardoMeurer Yeah well, form the trailer, I expected something else... Also seeing that movie in a less than optimal format didn't help either :p

@G.Bergeron Have you watched Rick and Morty?

@BernardoMeurer That is the single MOST awesome tv show there is!!!
Especially when I discovered season 2 existed last January
@BernardoMeurer Not punchy enough

@G.Bergeron I have the meme of your life
Give me a second
@G.Bergeron Man, her contemporary and experimental work with the Theremin is amazing

@BernardoMeurer I listen almost uniquely to fast paced psychedelic trance... :P

10:45 PM
@BernardoMeurer LOL

This made me laugh so much I almost punctured a lung

SPOILERS (Maybe): But really that whole ''Learning a new language will let you think like them hence, with aliens, you will see time differently as they do'' was just too much!
@AccidentalFourierTransform XD And then Rick said something like: Yeah well welcome to the club, pal
@BernardoMeurer I am sorry to have doubted you on that movie

@G.Bergeron I told you it was some proper stupid crap

I finally bought a stand + keyboard for my laptop at home. I will stop developing carpal tunnel syndrome hopefully!

10:51 PM
@G.Bergeron that's what did it for me too

@G.Bergeron Carpal Tunnel Syndrome sounds far, far cooler than it really is

@DavidZ I have hope!

@DavidZ Why would they get a theoretical physicist to decipher a language?

@G.Bergeron I recently bought a mouse for my laptop, but I'd been using the mousepad for so long that now the mouse feels wrong
I dont use it

@BernardoMeurer don't ask me

10:52 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform Yeah I'd ideally ditch the mouse, I don't like them. Except when I do 3D modelling... Then a mouse is a gift from heaven

@DavidZ There was a phrase at the end that almost gave me a stroke too
Dec 9 at 1:24, by Bernard Meurer
And the line "I've had my head tilted at the stars ever since I can remember, but it wasn't meeting them [aliens] that amazed me the most ... it was meeting you"
^ Horrible

@G.Bergeron 3D modelling? cool! what for?

@BernardoMeurer I'm actually not sure it's the stupidest choice, since it probably has nothing to do with human language. Actually, I would bring NSA cryptanalysts!

@G.Bergeron I'd get mathematicians, logicians, linguists, cryptanalysts

@AccidentalFourierTransform When designing the hardware for the things I build, it really helps being sure all the tolerances are ok. It's functional not artistic.

10:56 PM
You can be functional and artistic at the same time ;-)

@BernardoMeurer Are you sure about linguists? I mean, yes why not, but it might increase the chance of introducing a bias for the human way of thinking/communicating. At beginning, it would be a massive data analysis task with the relation to language coming at the very end.
@AccidentalFourierTransform Not sure I can

@BernardoMeurer If you had access to a full library, you'd want some chemists and physicists as well as mathamaticians, linguists and what not. Because the physical science and math texts (from primary school on up) will give you unambiguous nouns and verbs (mostly of a technical nature but you have to start somewhere).

@dmckee I'm not sure I see your point, if I want to build a house I can call a physicist, a chemist, a civil engineer, a linguist, a biologist and a zookeeper, or I can call just the engineer and odds are the house will be just as good

@BernardoMeurer Because we (collectively) know what we're doing in that case.

I.e. why would having a physicist be better than adding another linguist or mathematician or someone who actually works in information/languages/logic

10:59 PM
I think he meant to talk about the universality of math
