3:00 PM

heheh
Some physics functions aren't even hypergeometric functions!

what ? I always thought that every function is a hypergeometric one ?

Nah
Plenty of functions aren't hypergeometric
Like the Mathieu function or the spheroidal wavefunction

yeah but i thought every which comes from something real

3:02 PM
Those are useful in physics!
Used in antenna stuff

as I mainly do set theoretic topology I have to handle lot of functions which surely aren't hypergeometric ^^

@KyleKanos: Don't you have to qualify against other opponents before getting to the main round of who wants to be a millionaire?

In the original American version, the competition was a "fastest finger" thing. A question along the lines of "order these 4 items by date/importance/whatever" was given and then whoever got the order correct in the shortest amount of time got the chance to be in the seat

3:05 PM
TIME TO WRITE THIS ESSAY
huh, I don't have Word on this PC?

@0celo7 LibreOffice is free

@0celo7 that's good because $\LaTeX$ will be the better choice

It's also kind of shit

There's also that

@KyleKanos I have Office 365
I just need to DL Office

3:06 PM
Use notepad, like a real man
Or nano

@Slereah If by shit you mean "not up to MS office standards" then I might agree, but if you mean something different, please clarify so I can agree or not

Well for the alternative to the evil and terrible Microsoft, it disappoints

Because my experience with LibreOffice the last ~3 years has been pretty good

It's fine, it's just nothing special

@Slereah Can you be less vague?

3:07 PM
Given the choice I'd rather use Word
Is my point

well maybe it is only me, but I wouldn't be able to define exactly what a thesaurus is

I just downloaded Office
365 makes it really easy

It's a book of synonyms

@Slereah Not really possible on Linux (and kinda counter to the point of FOSS standards of most Linux distros)
@DominicMichaelis Do you know it isn't a dinosaur?

But there might be a better Linux version of a text editor, though

3:09 PM
@KyleKanos yes I know it isn't a dinosaur as my $\TeX$ editor got an option called like it, and I know the other 3 are dinosaurs

Office runs at 60fps apparently

@Slereah Eclipse, Geany, Netbeans, Code::Blocks for IDEs, emacs & vim for terminal editors

They are not really appropriate for writing a paper, though
Tex is nice, but not very intuitive if you want a particular layout

@Slereah well but it really is worth learning it

Sure, but for a school paper, I wouldn't use it

3:13 PM
They are text editors though...so you're looking for a word processor

oh sure for school you really shouldn't use it, because teachers expect you to do everything which is bad for a layout

I need a new desktop wallpaper
any suggestions?
1800p pls

@0celo7 XxY resolution pls

@KyleKanos 2880x1800
@Slereah wrong aspect ratio

3:17 PM
But it is so very great

@KyleKanos I got ZSNES last night. Is that a good emu?

It helps to know that this was based on 1.media.dorkly.cvcdn.com/71/64/…

@0celo7 I think snes9x is better, but zsnes is what I use

also no watermark is appreciated
@KyleKanos why is that better?
I'm not invested yet so I can switch

It's more stable

3:19 PM
also what are some games you recommend?
@KyleKanos so why don't you use that one

Wasn't compiling on my Linux box for some reason
zsnes, because it's older, was in the repos, so I just installed it
One big issue w/ zsnes is actually softlocks

How can I get to a specific page on the "Newest" tab?

@KyleKanos softlocks?

After ~30 minutes of game play, the game just freezes
@HDE226868 http://physics.stackexchange.com/questions?page=5&sort=newest

@KyleKanos Thanks.

3:21 PM
NP

@KyleKanos this happens with my gamecube emu

I knew it was page=# but I forgot where it was placed

I figured it was just me cranking out ridiculous settings
16xAF, 3x resolution and texture upscaling, modern lighting

how should $ A \exp(i k x) + B \exp(-i k x) $ be a solution to schrödingers equation for a particle trapped between infinite potentials?

@DominicMichaelis you solve it for a finite potential and let it go to infinity
you obtain certain restrictions on $k$ IIRC

3:27 PM
@0celo7 but the solution isn't differentiable?

Why isn't that differentiable? Or am I misunderstanding what you're asking?

Well if the potential isn't continuous

I think he means at the endpoints

How do you expect the solution to be smooth

^this

3:28 PM
at the endpoints it isn't differentiable

neither is the potential
the step function is not differentiable either
and your potential is essentially $\lim_{\alpha\to\infty}\alpha\theta(x)$, right? (well two of these)

If you want a more realistic case, use a sigmoid function

$H'(x)=\delta(x)$

@KyleKanos I've found $\theta(x)$ to be more common.

Yeah for sure but for some finite potential the solution was assumed to be smooth to get something like the "penetration depth"

3:31 PM
I've only ever used H for the (Heaviside) step function

@KyleKanos Even in QM?

Step function in QM tends to be written as $\theta$

$H$ could be the Hamiltonian.

We may have used $\theta$ then, but I saw the step function far more in my ~6 astro classes than my 2 QM classes

If you do QFT you're gonna see a shitload of heaviside

3:33 PM
^^

I think there is a lot of cheating involved after all

I'm done learning, so I'm not going to see QFT ever
(except on site here, if I get interested enough to read a Q&A about it)

They don't define what they see as a solution of a PDE

You're never done learnin!
4
You learn every dayyy
I used to run a twitter where I posted random GR facts
Just so you could LEARN EVERY DAY
(It had 0 followers)

for some finite potential the solution is smooth even though I think my PDE prof would kill me for such a calculation

3:36 PM
Actually, I had been working on learning GR, but had to take a break for some other, more important projects

@KyleKanos you should have read Carroll
or even Wald

When I earn some real monies, I'll pick up Carroll

all these wallpapers have watermarks...

For instance, did you know that there is a quantity called
HYPERMOMENTUM

I'll probably take a brief look at Wald, but I probably would have to learn Diff Geom before opening it

3:39 PM
@KyleKanos it's pretty self-contained

It is used in GR if you have a non-metricity tensor!

but he says some stuff that would get you weird looks from @ACuriousMind

$g_{ab,c} = N_{abc}$
like what

Christoffel symbols are tensors

I don't see a problem with defining a variable to replace another; slightly fewer characters to type

3:40 PM
he never uses the word covariant derivative

does he actually say that

yes

seems like a pretty egregious mistake

you want the page?

I'm at work
I can't check

3:42 PM
I have this thing called imgur
and a PDF
mom

I am not your mom

What does he use instead of covariant derivative?

"derivative operator"

But there's at least 3 in GR!

3:43 PM
Hmm, seems odd. Does he avoid the use of "contravariant derivative"

what the heck is a contravariant derivative

Like a covariant derivative
But contravariant

@0celo7 Hmm, that is an odd choice. Franklin introduces $C{^\alpha}_{\beta\gamma}$ but only says it is a triply-indexed object we know nothing about and then later introduces it as the Christoffel connection.

If you read a geometry book you'll see it is more natural to first define the cov. derivative along a curve $\nabla_X$ and then the cov. derivative itself $\nabla_i$ by $\nabla_X:=X^i\nabla_i$

3:47 PM
But he also shows how it isn't a tensor by changing coordinates

@KyleKanos I'm not sure if Wald ever shows that tbh

(speaking of ${C^\alpha}_{\beta\gamma}$ there)

@KyleKanos I know what you're talking about
the better way to define the christoffel symbols (without getting into fiber bundle nonsense) is: let $\{e_i\}_{i=1,...,n}$ be a basis of $M$ and $\nabla$ an affine connection on $M$. Then $\nabla_{e_i}e_j=\Gamma^k{}_{ij}e_k$.
by choosing $e_i=\partial_i$ and changing variables, you recover the usual crazy transformation rule of the Christoffel symbols
@KyleKanos does that make sense at all?

Sorry stepped away from the cpu for a few minutes

4:06 PM
@KyleKanos call me crazy but snes9x doesn't look as...crisp as zsnes

@0celo7 As I understand it, it's a difference in interests of the two devs
zsnes devs wanted the system to be fast while snes9x wanted the system to be accurate
That is to say, the snes9x emu attempts to replicate the actual gameplay of SNES games on the SNES console

I can't screenshot for some reason in zsnes

Not even global screenshot?

hmm, that's what I seem to be getting

Open a paint program and cut+paste the wanted image itself

4:15 PM
@KyleKanos why do I have a 60/60 in the bottom left corner of zsnes

@0celo7 Wiki says this definition is the 'Christoffel symbol of the second kind' (though I cannot see a difference between the first & second kind definitions outside of the upper/lower index)
@0celo7 Frame-rate?

yeah but how do I make it go away
snes9x
zsnes + chrome

@KyleKanos thank you mr. wizard

the internet is his Land of Oz :-)

4:21 PM
@0celo7 I do see the difference, and I think that's the design of snes9x (cf the console title screen here)

@KyleKanos ok now I can't put in a path because the \ gives a backtick instead

Huy
@KyleKanos: Multiplication with the inverse of $g_{ij}$?

@Huy Well that's the upper/lower index difference I see. But why is it called "first" and "second" kind with respect to that index change

Huy
@KyleKanos: No idea, I've never used first kind.
At least not explicitely.

haha the SNES resolution images look like thumbnails on my screen
@KyleKanos uh
the reason snes9x looks shitty is because there is a shittyness filter installed

4:29 PM
Really?

uploading now
"bilinear filtering"

Hmm. Well blocky pixels are beautiful

I deleted zsnes
I like the UI better in snes9x
@KyleKanos snes9x has a bunch of post fx built in
it's all disabled by default
maybe I can can max this game out!

gamers gotta game

0% GPU usage aww yeah
@KyleKanos is there a way to speed up the emulation?

4:37 PM
Check if - or = will increase/decrease speed

@Huy It would appear this SNES emulator is more GPU intensive than GTA5...

Huy
@0celo7: :O
@0celo7: Maybe you can use it to play GTA5 on?

that's really strange...

Huy
^^

@KyleKanos I can slow it down but the speed up does nothing

4:41 PM
Hmm. Check the settings menu?

well it says it is speeding up
but it's not speeding up

Huy
@0celo7: Then go back to playing Pokemon Yellow on VBA.

@Huy I need those emus too
GBC, GBA, DS
oh all the wonderful things I can now do with a PC

obe
ahhh I have a lot to learn and little time.

you done with Shankar yet?

Huy
4:44 PM
@0celo7: When I was on vacation in London with some friends, I installed a GBA emulator on my iPhone and showed it to a friend. Needless to say he spend roughly 95% of our time in London playing Pokemon on my iPhone.

I did that too

obe
@0celo7 I need to finish entirety of shankar in 30 days.

@obe how much is that anyway
per day

obe
~<15 pages.

get on it then

4:48 PM
Physics rogue in the building

what does the rogue do again

runs away from trouble

I see
ooh I got a blue wallpaper and now everything is blue...very nice

daily show finale party tonight
woo

5:17 PM
never seen that either

It is crazy to think that Jon Stewart has almost single-handedly misled an entire generation with that show.

which generation and what did he do?

He's ran that show for the last 20 years, so whatever generation you want to call the last 20 years

how did he mislead people
I've never once watched his show

By lying. Only showing his ideological side of the aisle

5:29 PM
care to elaborate on that?
since everyone seems to love him he's probably pretty liberal
@KyleKanos yay got the emu to run at 407% speed

Yes, he is very liberal. One of the things he does is make fun of Repubs for the most mundane things, but when Big Dem says something that would've made Nightly News had Big Repub says it, it gets brushed under the carpet at the Daily Show

as someone who has worked in the Senate, the proper abbreviation is just Rep

I still say Reps = House Reps

they're "congressmen"
or "house members"
usually it's clear from context in any case

5:47 PM
@KyleKanos is it sad that I'm not shocked by that?

6:04 PM
@0celo7 No.

I remember when that song came out

boring song

do you like techno?

that's too broad of a genre to say decisively
are we talking more hard dance or trance or what?
@KyleKanos so how do I do this fiesta thing

6:15 PM
Tweet #reg to @FF5ForFutures to get started
Tweet #water, #fire and #earth to unlock your other jobs when you get those crystals!
Tweet #victory along with the picture of you beating the final boss to complete the challenge!

I now have SNES, GBA, NDS, GCN (unstable) capabilites

Now you can play some of the best games ever made
Because they were driven by story & not graphics

I need to look into N64 next.
Then PSX, then PS2.
I want to play MGS again but my PSP is so inconvenient
wow Word 2013 is amazing
I'm used to Word 2011

what's a good proof of the LSZ formula

@KyleKanos you should give me a quick list
@Slereah remind me what that is

6:23 PM
Like a paper or book with a good description of it
It's the formula linking the M matrix with the correlation function

Zee. Weinberg. Srednicki.
Like showing the S matrix is just a bunch of derivative operators on the correlation function?
Literally every QFT book has that...

sure
But a GOOD ONE

Weinberg will probably be the most general though.

Full of details
If I ask you for a place with a good hamburger, don't tell me "The supermarket"
"I would like good food!"

or McDonalds

6:26 PM
"Food is everywhere!"
"Just look at tree roots and worms!"

@Slereah calm down

I am calm.
I am just somewhat sardonic

I'll check Weinberg once I have some of this essay done
I need to get some words on paper

Just say that the book was a metaphore for death
Or love
Or the Spanish civil war
you can tell from the characters and the themes
v. deathy
The tree symbolizes inevitability

Huy
@0celo7: Send me the books you're leaving at home!

6:28 PM
The dog symbolizes dogs
The typo on page 37 symbolizes the imperfection inside us all

@Huy You want a copy of Shankar with hot sauce spilled all over?

Huy
OFC!

@0celo7 In no particular order: (SNES) Street Fighter II Turbo, Link to the Past, Super Mario World (obv), Super Mario Kart, FF5, Chrono Trigger, Mortal Kombat, Secret of Mana, Super Metroid

And a copy of Zee that got soaked in Sam Adams?

Huy
PLEASE!

6:29 PM
@Slereah what does the symbol symbolize?

I don't know anything about NDS, so I can't recommend that

@KyleKanos I've played Super Mario World and Kart on my Wii (Virtual Console)
Chrono Trigger is definitely on my list.

skill : nothing, it's just a symbol

Huy
I bought a 3DS just to play Pokemon X.

Chrono Trigger is probably the only decent JRPG around

6:30 PM
@Huy me too :D

@Slereah Tell that to Prince :P

Now I have X, OR and AS

@Slereah If you ignore the entire Final Fantasy series, possibly

Huy
@0celo7: It was way too easy though.

I need to beat OR

6:31 PM
Why isn't my answer getting any upvotes? physics.stackexchange.com/a/197752/65616

Huy
@0celo7: I cried when I caught Xerneas with my first pokeball.

@Huy try the battle maison

What is wrong with my question?

I think you mean the artist formerly known as Prince
@KyleKanos I'm not!
Damn rubbish!

@Huy the box art legs are always super easy

6:31 PM
@Slereah you are correct
Mr Nelson actually

In ORAS there are a dozen other legs that are crazy hard to catch

The best RPG of all time still remains Planescape Torment
Congrats, Planescape

Huy
@0celo7: Yeah, that's a lot more difficult. I was just really disappointed by the difficulty of the story line. I remember my first game was Pokemon Yellow, how I tried to kill Onix and the other rock pokemon with poor Pikachu.

lol

Huy
@0celo7: Well I thought in Yellow and Silver/Gold/Crystal the box art legs weren't THAT easy.

6:32 PM
@KyleKanos I got that to play Pokemon.
I never got around to BW2.

the pokemen

Huy
@0celo7: I stopped after Crystal because I didn't want to keep learning about new Pokemon and their attacks etc.

In fact, BW2 are the only Pokemon games I've never played.

Huy
@0celo7: I only picked up SS/HG again and then X.

It's HGSS

Huy
6:33 PM
@0celo7: When I have time I'll play some other non-remakes so I get to learn the new pokemon.

not the other way around -.-

Huy
SSHG
@0celo7: I only have SS, that's why I wrote SS first and then I'd add HG.

Huy
SSHG

Huy
6:35 PM
SSHG

SSHG?

Huy
:(
I'm tired.
Better finish with my laundry before I'm too tired. BRB.

cya

7:00 PM
sad trombone

7:20 PM
@TanMath Without knowing anything about the subject of the question there are two reasons I'm not surprised by the lack of response. (A) Your answer appears to by inexpert eyes to be similar to one that came before it. (B) Your answer was posted on a questions with relatively few views when it was already a day old.
It's a simple matter of not many people having seen it, even fewer who felt qualified to vote on it and probably some of those felt that Chris' answer covered the matter and that your didn't add much to it.

The title of this article proves your point @Slereah that Wolfram is really a Knob.

7:48 PM
@skillpatrol i d get it

@Slereah Best rpg of all time is KOTOR

@FenderLesPaul Not sure if serious

Huy
Dear lord, my pillow top's cover isn't dry yet. Now I hope it will become dry before I fall asleep.

@KyleKanos @FenderLesPaul is serious

Well your opinion is now worthless
KOTOR is a fine game, but to put it above FF7, CT and OOT is bordering insanity

7:53 PM
What are CT and OOT?

Chrono Trigger, Ocarina of Time

I don't consider Ocarina of Time an RPG
it's more of an action-adventure game
Chrono Trigger is certainly very nice
I've never been able to get into FF7 or any of the later ones

AFAIK, people consider OOT as RPG

I don't really see how it's an RPG
there are no skill trees or character customization
but these are just labels at the end of the day anyways

Er, aren't there abilities that Link gains through the game?
(of course, the game is so broken that these are usually skipped in many speed runs)

7:58 PM
@FenderLesPaul on my wishlist

I guess so
