12:10 AM
I have the strangest song stuck in my head right now:

@LoganM I'm so afraid to click that.

@Eric You should be afraid for your life.

I also see "One Direction". Now I'm more scared.

The full title is: "Infinite Stratos vs. PSY vs. Quad City DJs vs. Sonic vs. Maroon 5 vs. Nicki Minaj vs. Ke$ha vs. O..."
The description is also great:
> Peace ushered throughout Japan for many years after the Infinite Stratos was created. However, that all changed when Sonic, a 21-year-old hedgehog, finds out that he can pilot an IS. Seeing unlimited potential, the government drafts him into the Infinite Stratos Academy, where he is surrounded by musicians from all over the world who can pilot IS.

@LoganM This reminds me of The Ultimate Showdown.
(Which is still awesome, btw.)

12:17 AM
@Eric You mean that really old video from the early days of flash?

@LoganM I totally mean that really old video from the early days of Flash. :D
The one that made Chuck Norris bigger than the internet.

@Eric I don't think that one had IS. Or really any anime.

@LoganM Nah, not even close. But I just meant the "A vs B vs C vs D vs ..." setup.

@Eric Ah, the vs. is used in mashups for some reason.

I wonder if that's at all related to the "Epic Rap Battles of History" series.

12:21 AM
Here's another example:
iDOLM@STER vs. Bubba Sparxxx vs. Snoop Dogg vs. Dr. Dre vs. Jay-Z vs. DMX vs. Will Smith

12:35 AM
The stats for today show the highest traffic on Area51 since I've started collecting stats (402 V/D).

12:51 AM
@LoganM Awesome. That's good. If we can break 500 I feel like we'll start getting steadier content levels, too.

1:20 AM
@Eric we broke it yesterday :)

@Krazer :D
Next goal: 1000!

@Eric we passed that on 2/13
reddit happened

@Krazer lol, Guess we should aim for 10k then.

we don't have anything help vampires want

Yeah. I don't know if that's good or bad.

1:25 AM
@Krazer We should expand our scope to Anime, Manga, and anything help vampires want.

We should just expand our scope to include everything, and see if the SE mods notice.

@Eric Robert still reviews a ton of stuff here, so I suspect he'd notice eventually unless we managed to inform all of our users without making it obvious to anyone else.
Actually, he only reviews suggested edits, so nevermind. I think we could get away with it.

@LoganM Shog might pay us a visit. He's a sitewide mod, right?

Unless I accidentally... let it slip >:D
@Eric He's a busy man

@Krazer That's true.
It would be funny to start asking questions about Marvel and such.

1:35 AM
All the supermods hare having a meeting in NY office so they are gonna be sparce

@Eric I see Shog in chat here occasionally, but I don't think I've seen him on the main site. Although his profile does indicate that he's upvoted 1 question and downvoted 1. He also has some meta activity.

Muahahahahahah~

(́◉◞౪◟◉)

1:55 AM
@LoganM So, Poyo's not fat. They just explicitly said so in episode 43. :|

@Eric What did they say?

Hide: "Fat cats seem popular lately"
Moe: "That's because everyone desires the healing and warmth of soft, round objects"
Hide: "If that's the case, Poyo doesn't fit that fetish. He's packed with muscle" (and pulls at his skin to prove it)

@Eric That's in like chapter 2 or 3 of the manga

Odd. Well, regardless, it's not that, then.

2:14 AM
ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

@Krazer omg, That looks just like Poyo. xD

2:29 AM
Yikes, no questions in the last 24 hours. I think I need to ask something.

@Eric Ask why no one is asking anything

Totally should.
"Why aren't there enough questions about anime and manga?"
I could revive my trap one, but that doesn't even count as a new question unless I post it anew.

Or you could ask about that "lolicons are diseased" thing that I posted a while back and you said you would ask about on loli day but didn't.

Hmm.. I don't remember that. I'll look for it.

@Eric I think it should for the purpose of stats, but only for 2 weeks from the date it was first posted.

2:32 AM
@LoganM Yeah, exactly.
@LoganM I can't find it. Do you remember any keyword from the conversation? loli, diseased, and ask are getting me nothing.

Ohhhhh, you found it! Now I just need a question... hmm... :D

You could ask what it's from. I'll tell you right away.

Sure. We could use an answered question. :D

2:48 AM

@Krazer Uh oh, will you beat Logan to answer? xD

@Eric no wai

@Krazer With how spotty my internet connection is right now, you might be able to.
or not

Nope, Logan won.
You answered it in 58 seconds. Well done.

no one can out gun @LoganM when it comes to VN

2:53 AM
@Eric I answered it within 5 seconds of finding the question. The main issue was the lag in actually finding it.

@LoganM I didn't know if you were actively looking or waiting for Sakamoto.
I wonder if Sakamoto will show it properly if I accept an answer before he comes.

BTW I had that answer written from when I first posted the image on April 22 just in case.

... nfw
Are you serious?
Logan, you are never allowed to leave this site. Ever.

@Eric This one is easy enough that if I know it's coming it would be irresponsible to not be looking for it. Cross Channel has recognizable uniforms and it's rather famous due to the spinoff flash game Nanaca Crash.
@Eric I thought there was a small chance someone would ask when I first posted the image, so I precomposed that answer before posting it. No one did, but I figured that I could get someone to do so eventually anyway.

@LoganM Victory is yours, then. :P

2:58 AM
@Eric how one-sided

lol
:)

The serial voting script just subtracted 30 rep, but I got 40 rep worth of upvotes in 1 minute. That's a bit silly. It seems like it should cancel all of them.

One might've been someone else.
It'd be an odd coincidence, but possible.

@Eric Would have to have been 2, since they were all question votes. And it would be really odd, since the votes came consistently in 3 second intervals.

Krazer lost rep due to serial upvoting as well. What the hell?
Do we have some serial upvoting troll?

3:06 AM
@Eric Look at his upvotes 1:43-1:49. That's 40 rep of upvotes, of which 35 was cancelled.

@LoganM That must be a bug, then.
lol, this person serial upvoted me too, but mine didn't get reversed.
Even though they voted for me 5 times. They were just more spread out.

Anyway mods should be able to tell who the serial voter is and can deal with it appropriately. I happen to know also because I've been keeping track of stats, but I won't post it here.

I don't feel right keeping this rep. Any suggestions on other people's questions I can bounty?

@Eric anything by that LoganM guy

@LoganM Does the Tonnura question have an answer? I'd rather bounty something that will actually get one or more answers.

3:12 AM
@Eric I'd just keep it for now. There are bountiable questions, but many of the questions probably aren't answerable easily, if at all.

Darn. D:

@Eric Yes, but it's rather easy actually. You could get it in an hour or two if you wanted to.

I also know the Kud Wafter question has a solution, but I'm halfway finished an answer to that one so it doesn't feel right, lol.

In fact I could tell you exactly where the answer is for the Tonnura one, but the point of asking the question is that it forces someone to read a nontrivial amount of this great manga fairly carefully to find the answer.

I'd rather read the manga, tbh.
It looks fun.

3:16 AM
I can guarantee that you will find at least a partial answer if you just read up to date what's translated in English. The full answer might not yet be revealed, but you should at least be able to tell how many siblings Tonnura has.

I might be able to suffer through the raws for what isn't in English to find something like that, too.

Anyway I don't think you should worry so much about rep from serial upvoting. It's just like all other rep: it doesn't really mean anything. Lots of other users probably got some too from the same person, and I suspect most of them didn't even notice it.

Q: From what series is this odd lolicon poster?

EricI recently saw this image of an approximately high-school-aged boy with a young girl under his arm, pointing up at the stars with the text "lolicons are diseased!" (Note: No offense intended from the image.) Are the characters found in this image from an actual anime or manga, or are they just...

Probably so. I don't like the idea of feeling like I'm too far ahead, though. Regardless, I'm past the last milestone (unless we suddenly graduate), so I'm not worried about bountying.
Yay, Sakamoto displayed it correctly!

@Sakamoto Yeah I already answered that one.
It does seem like the number is sort of greener than usual, so I think he's able to pick up on whether it has an accepted answer or not.

3:25 AM
Yeah. I know standard copy-and-paste of questions does that also, I just didn't know if Sakamoto's feed would let him.

BTW Cross Channel is a pretty good eroge IMO. The translation isn't so great (it's hard to translate because the protagonist's internal dialogues are very strange) but it's still very enjoyable even in English. Plus it's literally never been adapted to any other medium apart from console (AFAIK). However, you have to go in prepared to hate the protagonist, because he's not really a good guy.

@LoganM Not good how?

@Eric It's hard to explain fully without any spoilers. For one thing, he sexually harasses pretty much every female character in the series. He's also really annoying at times, and lies, cheats, cuts classes, etc.

@LoganM That's an interesting protagonist, all right

@Eric He's very interesting, but not very likable. If you want someone like Okabe from S;G he's going to disappoint you more often than not.

3:37 AM
@LoganM Okabe is awesome. I don't know, Okabe isn't my typical preferred protagonist. But as long as there's a good, common secondary character, I can manage a terrible protagonist.

@Eric It's a really strange game overall, and I wouldn't characterize many of the characters as likable. There are a couple who I liked, but most of them are sort of difficult to deal with. Anyway you might enjoy it, or you might hate it.
Also, just FYI, it's not supposed to entirely make sense what's going on the first time you go through the loop. It gradually starts to make more sense, and by the halfway point you should mostly get the gist of what's going on.

It likes to leave its viewer behind? :P

@Eric No. It just doesn't reveal too much at the beginning. You can perfectly follow the individual scenes it shows you, but how they fit into a broader story is not obvious until you get through at least a couple of routes.

@LoganM That's okay, I guess. It is nice to be able to put things together earlier on though.

@Eric In this case it would be boring if they told you everything right away, since you have to play through more-or-less the same story several times. But each time it reveals more info, so it doesn't really get old.

3:53 AM
@LoganM That is my least favorite part of VNs, though. Redoing parts of the story.

@Eric You're supposed to autoskip the text you've already read.

@LoganM Autoskip is so slow! >_<

@Eric Not really. It skips through like an hour of dialogue in a minute or so.
Also, at least in my experience, you rarely need to use it very much. Sure, if you have a late-branching plot with lots of choices it can get annoying, but most VNs worth reading have early branchpoints (or don't branch at all). Cross Channel is a bit unique in that regard since it's not even correct to say that it has branchpoints. In one playthrough you complete every route.

So you don't have to redo the common route each time?

@Eric Depends. Most of the time you can just set autoskip on and only watch the scenes you haven't seen before. In some cases though the common route itself has early branch points (like Clannad, for example). But in general you don't need to reread anything you've already read.
The only game that actually annoyed me with the amount of autoskip required was Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo. That's because there's really only one storyline, and the individual character routes are just a few scenes tacked on for that particular character. Since I wanted all the CG I had to do all of them, so I autoskipped through the game about 5 times, which took a bit of time. But for most games it's fast enough that you don't need to worry about it.
Even that one took less than an hour, so I shouldn't really be complaining about it.

4:11 AM
Less than an hour? Did you rush it?

@Eric Less than an hour total autoskip time. The gameplay time is probably around 30 hours.

Oh, lol. Yeah, that's better.
Do you ever play any with RPG components in them?

@Eric Yeah, occasionally

@LoganM Heard of Battle Moon Wars?

@Eric Yeah, but I haven't played it.

4:17 AM
What about Ib? :D :D :D

@LoganM There's apparently fan translations, but I haven't played it either.
Ib?

The only ones I usually play are the ones with a big VN component to them, like Kamidori, Rance, Baldr, etc. I did manage to make it through Melty Blood, but I had my friend do most of the fights.

@Krazer Looks interesting, at the very least. I'll check it out more tomorrow :D
@LoganM Aww, not doing the fun part? T_T

the necoarc parts are the best!

4:23 AM
I'm going to bed~ good night, guys!

@Eric I tend to use anime, VNs, etc as a way to relax. If there's any significant difficulty associated to them then they aren't very good for that.
@Eric night

@LoganM I shall rebut tomorrow. Unless it's too much work.
Also, I leave you with this, enjoy:

Q: Why does Ruriko get angry when she's called as "Rurippe?"

xjshiyaWhy does Ruriko get angry whenever Shun calls her as "Rurippe" when according to this, 'Rurippe' holds no real meaning except that Shun relates it to her childhood appearance as a sniveler (or one who always has a runny nose). How does Shun relates this nickname to Ruriko as a sniveler...

Q: How should I distinguish between SciFi.SE and Anime.SE?

RetrosaurI'm asking this, because I thought of a question, but I'm afraid to ask because I"m not sure if it's the right fit. I was planning to ask a question about Devil May Cry, which is not only a video game, but used to be a manga as well, but was related to something specific to the characters within...

Q: How real were the dreams in Paprika?

DanalogI really loved Paprika, but I ended up sort of confused by it. During the course of the film, My question is, was it just a mass hallucination, or was it actually truly real?

Thanks, Sakamoto!
Hopefully I picked the right amount of stuff to put in spoiler tags

@Danalog I don't know if spoiler tags are necessary here, since it's a movie. Anyone clicking on the question without seeing the movie should know that there might be spoilers, and anyone who has seen the movie doesn't need any spoiler tags. But the amount you've put in the tags is minimal, so it's probably okay.

4:45 PM
Oh, that's a really good point.
For movies, you've seen it or you haven't, but for series you can be partway through. I guess my main thing was I didn't want a movie spoiler in the short description on the question list page.

5:06 PM
Huh, a favorite on that one already. That's only my fourth favorite.
er, fifth

@Mysticial Have you been following the drama that's going on on MSE?
Anyway, if you haven't, it's pretty crazy right now.
There was a proposal to ban all verbatim copied questions which generated a ridiculous number of answers and comments:
47
Q: Proposal: ban verbatim homework questions which have no accompanying text

Qiaochu YuanEdit: Clarification: I think we should start closing questions which are obviously copied verbatim from a homework assignment and which consist of no other text. Questions about homework with other text, e.g. "I tried X and it doesn't seem to work," are fine. Many people are asking 1. how we sh...

The followup post trying to actually implement the policy doesn't have as much activity, but it still has nearly 100 comments total between the post and answers:
48
Q: Proposal: Discourage questions that are nothing besides a problem statement

mixedmathThis is a very clear followup to Qiaochu's question: Proposal: ban verbatim homework questions The reason that I create a new post is because I want to remove the issue from a homework-related issue to a minimum-quality-standard issue. There have also been 3 moderator resignations in the past 24 hours:

Qiaochu YuanI don't want to give a big speech about this. In short, moderating is draining my emotional energy and I'm much less convinced of its value than I used to be. 5:21 PM
" I no longer feel comfortable recommending Math Stack Exchange to friends, " -- harsh

@LoganM There won't be any mods left at the election if they continue to resign at this rate

@Krazer 3 out of 7 is pretty bad. They are already planning a new mod election (7 mods really wasn't enough anyway with how many questions MSE was getting anyway). I think there was some other drama also where another user's mod powers were removed by SE in the past day or so, but I can't find any documentation supporting that.

I heard Qiaochu lost it temporarily but another mod lost it permanently

@Krazer Yeah that's what I heard too.

apparently Bil Dubuque made a stink about it and loss it permanently
number of moderators vs. time for math.SE

5:30 PM
@Krazer Bill hasn't been a mod for a while. Partly because he didn't believe in moderating.
However, he did delete his account over this affair. Previously he just had his username listed as "Gone" and was in a long suspension, but starting today his profile page is deleted.

Who knew that math was so drama filled?

@Danalog I found the behavior to be expected... Both math and physics rely on confrontation to work... but unfortunately many ppl don't get the diff between constructive crit and personal attacks D:

Ah, yeah. Same thing in software development, telling somebody that their code is terrible and they get all offended.
I didn't say you were terrible, just your software!

lol
Only one person has Fanatic on meta. And it's someone with 103 rep.

I almost had fanatic but then I went on a business trip and forgot to check in one day =(

5:40 PM
lol, That happened to my friend on SO.
He got to 97, then missed a day.

Over halfway there again!

@LoganM holy shit
I gotta read this

Mystical loves a good dorama

@Krazer But Dorami doesn't like cockroaches.

@Eric and we don't know why!!!

@Krazer Nope! D: It appears irrational. But I haz no citationz.

@Eric I have to read though all 50+ volumes of doraemon now!

@Krazer :)
Have fun!

IOW, Math.SE has grown large enough to have the same problems as SO.

It looks like the last time Skeet was under the rep cap was in June 2010

5:48 PM
@Krazer Can't. I'm in Canada.

@Krazer LOL xD

6:04 PM
damn... Math.SE has had quite a bit of moderator problems...

Somebody divided by zero....
All the moderators went under!

Woah... one of the math.SE mods was removed...
That can't be good...

@Mysticial He may have requested it.

@Eric That would be a resignation.

@Mysticial It wasn't one of the ones that resigned?

6:08 PM
"Removed" implies, the moderator was kicked out against his/her will.

Q: When/Why did Nagi move out of her mansion and into the apartments?

atlantizaIn the first episode of the 4th season (Hayate no Gotoku! Cuties), Nagi is shown living in the apartment building with all of her friends. (You can't really tell this is the apartments from the screenshot, but note the rather plain looking Japanese-style room compared to her Western-style room ...

Wow... the Math.SE community really hates Jeff...

@Mysticial ?

I'm reading all the moderator resignation statements...
and holy shit...

Hates Jeff?

Jeff Atwood: co-founder of StackExchange

> To determine whether programmers get better or worse with age, the researchers looked at the top ranked programmers on StackOverflow, a site where coders can ask and answer questions about programming. Users rate answers from fellow developers, and then the site uses those rating to generate a reputation score for each developer. Comparing these reputation scores to the age of each developer, the researchers found that these ratings tended to increase as developers moved into their 50s.

Ahhh
Some developers get better with age. Some don't.

@Krazer Awesome. AWESOME.

I think I found the moderator who was removed from Math.SE.
At least a name, not a profile.

@Krazer awesome

6:36 PM
@JNat você é ótimo!

@Krazer why thank you. But anyway, ótimo is Brazilian Portuguese. Here it is óptimo
well, I (and most Portuguese people) still write like that, but there's this new thing that is supposed to be in use that makes your spelling correct

@JNat TIL I've been using the wrong Portugese O_O

6:57 PM
@Mysticial That's old stuff. Math.SE doesn't really care about Jeff anymore. They only really disliked him about 2 years ago.
@Mysticial Bill was removed a while ago as a mod. He remained a user until some time today, but he had a long suspension and he changed his username to "Gone" and his profile had something about protesting injustice.

So it was Bill. I guess right.

I think another mod dispute is what caused the drama this time. Since Bill hasn't been a mod for a while, he wasn't a part of this one AFAICT.

@Mysticial how so?

@Krazer It was clearly a suspension notification email. Only moderators can send those.
Unless it's some normal guy just making it up.
I guess that's the case here.

@Mysticial I agree

@Krazer lol, furthermore, you'll probably be interested in knowing that the way you wrote that is the way a Brazilian would write. In Portugal we'd say: informally "tu és óptimo" and formally something like "o senhor/a senhora é óptimo/a" or something like "o/a [name] é óptimo/a"

I also don't know why I have 108 rep on Math.SE. I've never asked nor answered a question there.

Q: Modular Arithmetic order of operations

EricIn an assignment, I am given $E_K(M) = M + K \pmod {26}$. This formula is to be applied twice in a formal proof, so that we have $E_a(E_b(M)) =\ ...$. What I'm wondering is; is the original given formula equal to $(M + K)\pmod{26}$, or $M + (K \mod{26})$? This will obviously make a big difference...

the other ones are weak, yes

@JNat Definitely the best answer on that question.

@Mysticial It's also the longest and the shortest.
It also has the most votes, and the least votes, of all the answers.

@Eric my answer has it all

It's also the only one that's accepted.

Oddly, though...
Every answer in that thread is accepted.
Isn't that weird?

Yeah... didn't even notice that.

7:32 PM
@Eric clearly the first one was the best one

@Krazer Really? I think the most recent one is the best one.

No, the last one is the best.

@Mysticial don't you mean the latest one?

@Krazer No, I mean the fastest slowest one.

The roundest one.
The bluest one.
One answer, two answer, red answer, blue answer.

The rudest one.

Poyopoyo, hya~

@Eric the JNat-est one!

all of those are mine
I win

@JNat Except the ones that aren't.

@Eric there aren't any of those
the only one that is not mine is the nonexistent one

7:38 PM
@JNat Except for the ones that are.

It's also the only answer that mentions Anime.SE.

Argh, reading handwritten kana is the most painful thing ever. Except perhaps handwritten kanji.

@Eric need help?

@JNat Nah, I think I got it... for now. ^^'

7:53 PM
Yay, one sentence done! lol
Halp? xD
ぴと? I'm not sure.

@Eric I think so

Does that mean anything?

@Eric I don't know :P

Google Translate just translates at as "Pito". <<'
@Krazer, do you know?

@Eric can I get the context?
as is it sounds like a name

8:11 PM
@Krazer A couple of shota playing "doctor". Neither is named "Pito", nor is that part of their names. I thought it might be a sound effect but that'd probably be katakana, wouldn't it?

@Eric sound effects can be both
ぴ is generally a touch sound effect

And と?

using katakana give it more emphasis
like boom vs bang

と is hiragana, though...

@Eric probably hitting something
or contact with something (physically)
so it can probably be inferred as tap or light tough if it were a sound effect

8:17 PM
That makes sense, then.

google can't do onomatopoeia at all

Nor can romajidesu... :(

@Eric why are these shota playing "doctor?"

@Krazer Who knows? It's just fan art, lol

lol

@Mysticial That was during beta. It doesn't seem like he was a pro temp mod, but he had a lot of meta activity during beta (far more than his main site activity). It's hard for me to tell if he had any sort of official role, but at the very least I don't understand what it is he's posting.
@Eric That Cross Channel ID request might get to +10.

@LoganM I know, I can't believe it.

@Eric Yeah, ID requests are an easy way to get lots of rep. Anyone can verify that they are correct, they're interesting to people who haven't heard of the series, and they tend to be easy to answer.
If we start getting too many of them it might have problematic effects.
Overall I think rep inflation on this site is pretty bad for easy questions, but it's especially so for ID questions.

I tend to be upvote-happy. I do it largely because it's in beta, and encouraging users is helpful. I don't expect everyone to do it, nor should they, but it's really a good way to get users to post more stuff. Once we grad there's less of a possibility I'll do it so much.

I know that I vote too much. I've upvoted questions that could be answered by a simple Google search for the title.

8:43 PM
I'm upvote-happy thanks to it being in beta. I try not to do identify questions though, unless it's something that's really bugging me and I failed to figure it out.

@LoganM Really? I try not to upvote those.

we have a serial upboater on the loose. they are believed to be fast and extremely click-happy

@Eric The trouble is that in some cases, those questions are actually good for bringing in search traffic. Also, most of our answerable questions (certainly more than half) are of that type that can be searched for relatively easily IMO.

@LoganM Voting it up won't necessarily bring in more traffic to it, though. So I don't worry much on that.

@Krazer Can't you see who it is from the mod-tools? Don't tell us of course. But you could notify the user (via private chat), that serial upvoting doesn't work.
The aggregate voting data should probably show if someone is voting heavily for one user. Unless of course the user is doing it to everybody equally.

8:54 PM
Serial upvoting doesn't work in what way?

@Danalog The site's scripts reverse it.

Maybe serial upvoting means something more specific than I thought. Do you mean spam upvoting that gets you banned?

Any idea? I thought it was おぃしやごん but that doesn't make any sense.

@Danalog No, it's when a disproportionally large portion of your votes are for one person. And/or they are done in quick successions (as if you were running down the user's profile and up/downvoting everything.)

Ahh
yeah, that's no good =P

8:58 PM
AFAIK, mods can look up a user and see who has voted on the user the most times. As well as who the user has voted on the most.
They can't see specific data, but they see aggregates. Enough to bust up voting-rings.
For instance: If a mod sees that 90% of my upvotes are for Logan, then I might be a sockpuppet.
