Q: What flavors would you like to see for our weekly flavor days?

KrazerCurrently we have a weekly event on Saturdays in order to encourage users to come and as question of a specific flavor. It's easier to participate when you have a topic to narrow things down. So far we've done the following flavors: "Cats" (and cat-related things) "Small" and "cute" "Games" an...

Q: What flavors have already been featured in "Flavor Day"?

JNatWe've been promoting an event that takes place every Saturday: "Flavor Day". In each Flavor Day, one or two flavors are picked and questions about them are encouraged (for further info and suggestions for flavors you'd like to see featured, see this post). This post's purpose is to keep track of...

@HellButterfly ...

I wonder if it's intentional

12:45 AM
I present to you... Fartoise

@Krazer It's carrying a leek ._.

1:06 AM

I like the leek

How is Krabby + Seel "Krabeler"? Somehow it's the same as Graveler.

@Eric Hypno + Hypno = Hypfalse
Seel + Seel = Seeeler

Vulpix + Gengar = Vulgar

Onix + Hypno = truefalse
Hypno + Cloyster = Hypster

1:17 AM
"Onix + Hypno = truefalse"? wtf?
That seems like a bug or something, lol.

Mankey + Kadabra = Manbra

... lol
Wartortle + Grimer = Warmer
Butterfree + Primeape = Butterape... <_<'

1:41 AM
Poliwrath + Grimer = Polimer
Machamp + Meowth = Math

@LoganM It also looks like it has Stewie's head.

@Eric Who is Stewie?

@LoganM You've never watched Family Guy?

@Eric I don't think so. I haven't watched TV in about 10 years, and even before that I rarely did.

Crazy.

1:52 AM
I thought you were talking about an anime character, but I don't think there are any anime characters named Stewie.

Probably not.
It would surprise me if there was, it's not a common name, especially spelled that way.

It's not common in Japanese either.

Not surprising.

The closest I could find was a "Dr. Stewart" in F-Zero and "Stewart Vanguard" from Inazuma 11

Yeah, Stewart isn't terribly uncommon. But the shortening of it is rare.

2:02 AM
BTW I think the reason Hypno -> false and Onix -> true is because it's taking "no" and "on" and then converting them to booleans for some reason.

I think you're right. But it's just weird.
Hmm....

I agree that it's weird, and I don't know why it does it that way, but I'm pretty sure that's what is happening.
The glitch only seems to happen if you start at the above one and switch to Onix and Hypno. If you start from the main page there's no problem: pokemon.alexonsager.net/95/97
Actually nevermind, it seems to be totally fixed now. That's very strange.

@LoganM Yeah, he must have just fixed it.

He just added Kingler, though it doesn't work yet.

I'm looking at his code now, and reusing it, and it's fine.
I figured out why. Well, kinda. It's part of the backend (not the frontend). Hence, me using his code was producing correct results, because I don't have access to the backend.
However, why his backend was producing true and false, I can only guess. My guess is that he loads it from an INI file, which would allow yes -> true and so on.

2:23 AM
lol Eveyuu's new website is probably the best fansub website on the internet

Why's that?

WEEBL!
@LoganM Have you seen any of that guy's other songs?

@Eric Yeah a few of them

I love 'em. I still hum some of them while I'm in the kitchen, lol.
We used to watch these in Junior High when it took like 4-5 minutes to buffer each one. Now it's like 5 seconds. weebls-stuff.com/songs/badgers

2:42 AM
Do we have these? I haven't seen any.

Q: Why no honeypot suggested edits?

Sha Wiz Dow ArdWhile the review audits are great and much needed, as far as I can tell they do not apply for the suggested edits queue. Robo reviewers can still approve crap and smile all the way to their badges. Is there a reason behind this? Constructing dummy suggested edits which are obviously bad shouldn...

@LoganM These are on the same sites as the review audits we talked about a few days ago, I think.

@Eric The post doesn't specify that, though I could believe it.

@LoganM I'd assume all audit technologies are bundled.

3:10 AM
@LoganM Ro-Kyu-Bu just keeps getting better. This is one of the most awesome series I've seen in a while.
A+ on your recommendation skills.

4:07 AM
@LoganM Those are pretty funny on SO.
They have a bot that inserts random sentences with random technical terms into posts as suggested edits.

@Mysticial It's awesome seeing some of them, lol. Especially the ones that almost make sense.
Or have better grammar than the original post.

"Or have better grammar than the original post." - sad but true...

Yup. :|
Bedtime now, goodnight! :D

Q: Threatening emails from Jeff Atwood

Mr Atwood starts with a greeting "Hi Robin". His bogus familiarity is neither deserved nor welcome. He accuses me of leaving mu...

3:00 PM
@Krazer I saw that. I think Jeff's emails were right, even if a little condescending.

2 hours later…
5:03 PM
@Eric What else did you see?

@Krazer A saw.
I saw a saw, so that I could see the sea. But I got a C when I saw the sea, because I didn't see the saw. :(

@Eric sounds like you were looking for a seesaw

@Krazer I was, but if I saw the seesaw, I couldn't see the sea. There wasn't enough time for me to see the sea, saw, and seesaw.

@Eric Wonderful. Go buy yourself a nice t-shirt: shirtpunch.com/designs/details/alchemy-academy

@Krazer .. OMG. You have no idea how much I want that.

5:08 PM

$10... hard to pass up.

@Eric but I did.

@Krazer What's the timer for? Does it stop being sold at that point?

I have returned!

@Eric time remaining for the sale
@Neko_Kun how was your journey?

5:11 PM
@Krazer Nil... xD androiddissected.com/… <--- I did that while I was gone though!

@Neko_Kun you made a galge?

@Krazer no, I wrote the review of it xD

@Neko_Kun I would've been semi-jelly if you did >:P

@JonLin Yup~

@Eric Certain Buddhists believe in a concept of Reincarnation where every soul has to be born 7 times in this earthly world as any living being (it can be a human being, an animal or even trees and bushes). This birth and rebirth is called the 'Cycle of Life'. If you do good in this life, you will be born to a better environment in the next incarnation. After the seven incarnations, the soul attains what is known as 'Nirvana' or 'Moksha' which is the liberation from the 'Cycle of Life'
that might help with your 7 incarnations answer

@Krazer What's the source?

@Eric Blavatsky, H.P., The Voice of the Silence, Theosophical University Press, Pasadena, 1946, p. 69
> Calm and unmoved the Pilgrim glideth up the stream that to Nirvana leads. He knoweth that the more his feet will bleed, the whiter will himself be washed. He knoweth well that after seven short and fleeting births Nirvana will be his....

@Krazer Do you own the book? I never found that D:

Oh, nice. Google Books search clearly sucks for me. xD

6:10 PM
@Eric I'm looking for something more substantial connecting the character and phrase, so if you can provide a solid link I'll accept it

@Krazer I'll take a look...
The problem is that none of his bios are very thorough. It's hard to find out if he even follows a religion.

@Eric connect yakuza with Buddhism and I'll call it your win

6:31 PM
It's a rather long story, and I wasn't active on the site at the time so I'm not too knowledgeable about it. But you have to consider how MSE was formed for some context. Basically, the original group of users existed even before MSE. They had a usenet group or something (actually, I think they still do). Essentially all they wanted was a software upgrade. Given the success of MO, they liked the SE engine, but really all they wanted was a stable platform for asking and answering math questions which was more advanced than Usenet.

@LoganM How did you fit that into one message.

@Mysticial Magic

Lossless compression.

7 messages moved to /anime/bin

7:00 PM
Actually, to be perfectly honest, I used the LHC for that one.

7:22 PM
Spoilers: This will be on the multicollider shortly: stackoverflow.com/q/16324831/1438733

@Eric How can you tell?

@LoganM Just a hunch. It got 10 upvotes in less than 5 minutes.

what does the number next to the question indicate on the multicollider?

@Krazer I think that's the result of the multicollider equation.
@Mysticial might know.

If it gets answered well within the next hour then it'll make it.
@Krazer The "hotness" score.

7:29 PM
oic

@Mysticial There's an answer at +4 already (2mins old). I'm guessing it will be accepted also.

@Mysticial 2 answers currently

It's on it already at 21.

@Mysticial Oh, not for me. Oh, well. My spoilers were right! :D
Back later.

@Eric 21 isn't very high at all.
Too early to call it though. The initial votes seem to have stopped.

7:35 PM
I just said it'd be there. I didn't say it'd reach the top.

From what I've seen, getting on the multicollider doesn't do much unless you're in the top without scrolling.
On the other hand, it's atop the regular hot list: stackoverflow.com/?tab=hot

@Mysticial Nothing else there looks very hot to me

@LoganM Yeah, that's cause there's nothing else hot on SO right now.
Most questions on SO don't last more than a few minutes on that list.
Anything that stays at the top of that list for more than an hour will have a lot of votes already.

Wow this question is at 0 but has 8 answers

Q: Need for loop to check 2 conditions before continuing

Craig ThomsonI'm currently developing a "Sokoban" game at a very basic level. I'm trying to make this for loop but cannot seem to complete it. My aim is to carry out an example of the movement code below, I feel my syntax is wrong in regards to adding another condition where it says "(diamondlist.Count) & (Pl...

Typical FGITW with a "meh" question.
Anything that stays atop that regular hot-list for SO for more than 6 hours will have hundreds of votes and/or a crazy shit-ton of answers.
Those are rare.

7:46 PM
I bet a question like this could be kept on the hot list for a while just by adding lots of moderately useful answers from different accounts.

@LoganM Yes. It could easily be gamed that way. But I have yet to see anybody actually do that.
Mostly because most people don't understand the multicollider or the hotness formulas enough to do so. Nor do most people care.

BTW the "interesting" tab seems to have mostly questions which I would not classify as interesting.

But it's easier to game the multicollider by simply dropping the question on Reddit than to actually post a bunch of "moderately useful" answers. (the former is allowed, btw)
@LoganM It's bad naming. It's actually just all the questions in order of last activity, with downvoted questions removed and bias towards your tags.
For SO, it's just a random subset of all the questions with activity.
Since there's too much traffic otherwise.

@Mysticial Yeah, I wasn't seeing any significant difference from the active questions tab, so I figured it was just bad naming.
I don't think other sites have an interesting tab. Most of them have "active" instead

Right, the "interesting" and "active" tabs look the same because you're not logged in. So it doesn't have any user-info to bias them towards.
Doesn't look like that java question is gonna take off.

1 hour later…
9:27 PM
That question has only made it to about halfway up the list, and seems to be losing steam. It might not even break +25 for good question, and it certainly isn't likely to pass most of the top questions on the multicollider right now.

I've noticed that the # of SO questions that top the multicollider are a lot less then they were this time last year.
I wonder if it's really a change in attitude of the userbase.
It used to be that 80% of the stuff from SO on the multicollider were crap.
Now most of the things I see up there are genuinely good.

I don't think it represents a significant change in the algorithm, as the SO stuff that was getting on was heavily upvoted. It could be that many more questions which could be interesting to people are duplicates, or it could be a change in overall user voting/answering trends.

Last year, stuff like this would top the multicollider all the time.
At least once a month.
Now, I rarely ever see anything from SO up there.

In any case, the formula probably still deserves some tweaking IMO. It's not uncommon for me to find 5-10 Math questions up there, and many of them aren't even very heavily upvoted.

Math is up there a LOT. A lot more than SO nowadays.
The formula has other (big) problems with it.
But it's harder to see it now that hardly anything from SO or programers.SE tops that list anymore.
Either the SO user-base has been holding back votes on heavily upvoted posts, or the formula has been tweaked to put more handicap on SO.

9:40 PM
@Mysticial I think it's the former. A year ago, most of the stuff I saw from SO was in the triple digits, or at least fairly high in the double digits.

I'm gonna fork one of my old queries so see if there's a trend.

If penalties are being applied based on the site, they should probably be recalibrated. Most of the time it's the same sites dominating, which is probably indicative of their voting cultures.
On math, everything gets upvoted, even the bad stuff. If someone bothers to ask a remotely interesting question that the average user can understand, it gets highly upvoted and lots of answers.

# of posts that reached 100 within 7 days.
Monthly breakdown.

It's up to 37. My guess is that's as high as it's going.

Lemme tighten the query down to 3 days. That should limit it to posts that got their votes from the multicollider (or external linking if it was early as well)
Still looks the same at 3 days.
Here it is at 1 day only:
No significant difference between now and this time last year.

9:52 PM
Maybe instead of 100, try 20. That should be more representative of the minimum needed to get on the multicollider
Running with 20 is taking a while

lol, flat all the way through...
all the years

I guess that's not it then

20 a bit lot though.
Many posts get to 20 without multicollider help.
I'll try 50
slightly upwards trend at 50
I just tried 200 at 1 day. Too few data points. lol

If I run it on Math w/ 20 after 1 day I see a big upward trend:

nice free-hands

10:00 PM
That's a much bigger trend than I saw on SO

yeah
And also note that SO is still growing.
The fact that the graph is relatively level means that it's harder and harder to put anything on the multicollider.
I'm gonna fork the query again to list the actual posts as well.
Which is okay for higher vote-counts and few data points.

It could also be that the penalties were hardwired in a year or two ago. The result today would be a huge number of Math questions making it to the multicollider, which seems to be what we're seeing.

goddamit...
lol

Third question in a row that I get to create a tag and the associated wiki for. I think I only like obscure things =P

Programmers is really freaky when I run the query with +20/1:

10:07 PM
wow
lol

I reiterate Logan's handwriting: lolwut?

Actually those "flat" posts seem to be migrated from SO
"lolwut" is when the site started, and since then it's gone down.

Here's the +200/1 broken down by posts. (no graph)
It happens about once a month. And usually come in pairs for question + top answer.

Private beta started on Sept 1, 2010 for programmers.

Too small of an N to draw any conclusions.

10:16 PM
I also seem to see a lot of TeX questions up there, so I ran it. +20/1 turned out to be useless because the numbers were too small, but +10/1 gives an interesting distribution:

I just did +10/1 on SO. The trend is slightly downwards, lol.

There's pretty clearly a transition in mid-to-late 2011, where the number of such questions jumped by roughly a factor of 4

10:28 PM
@Mysticial Is this query looking at both questions and answers or just questions?

@LoganM Both
So a single question could produce multiple posts.
Usually it's just two: itself and the top answer.

Okay, then I understand the results.

A/day went up like crazy?

@Mysticial No, I was using it with votes as -50 to try to get the total number of questions for the month, but it was giving me something off by roughly a factor of 3.

ah

Q: How can Hermes and Riku talk?

DanalogI don't think they ever explain in the anime how Hermes (the motorcycle) and Riku (the dog) can talk. There are plenty of talking robots, but they're clearly mechanical entities, while Hermes acts more like a person. Also, electronic speech does not explain Riku. Is it ever explained how Herme...

hai gaiz! summer animu list here:

@Krazer Ro-Kyu-Bu! SS will be the best one

@LoganM I can't effen' wait for that.
Hyped.

I say that, but there's also High School DxD New, which should be great too. Milky Holmes S3 is another sequel I'll probably watch.

Hyperdimension Neptunia I think was one of the most boring games I've ever played

Also Tamayura was good, so I'll probably watch the second season.

11:01 PM
@Krazer Which will you be watching?

@Eric @Krazer is actually a raging fujoshi, so he's only going to watch Free.

@LoganM If those premises are true, certainly they will lead to the conclusion that he will greatly enjoy it.

@LoganM Also any TYPEMOON series. I'm raging HARD!

@Eric It's going to be terrible. Not because it's objectively going to be bad, but because Kyoani is wasting their time with this yaoi garbage when they should be giving me delicious moe.

@LoganM But for anyone into pure yaoi, they will surely love it.

11:06 PM
@Danalog still doesn't beat superman 64

@Eric Yeah. I can almost guarantee you [sage] will be subbing it. My friend is their leader and head translator, and she's also a huge yaoi fan. That tends to be the only reason they do about half of the shows they pick up.

@Krazer How about "It was one of the most boring games I ever expected to enjoy"

I expected to enjoy Street Cleaning Simulator. It seemed like the most original idea for a game in a long time. Sadly, it was terrible.

@LoganM That game had so much promise.

@Eric I heard lots of good things about it. Looking back, they were probably trolling me.

11:14 PM
@Danalog ( ̄ε ̄〃)b

@Eric how far are you in Ro-kyu-bu?

@LoganM Finished episode 8 this morning. Though I was disappointed after 6 that they didn't play up Subaru in the vault.

@Eric 8 is the pool episode right?
Anyway I think 7-10 or so are the best episodes. I don't really remember the ending very well, but I remember that the pool and beach episodes were probably my favorites.
lol MAL has the best descriptions for Ro-Kyu-Bu characters:
> Pink haired girl is Kevin Durant.

11:35 PM
@LoganM Yeah, it's the one that ends with Aoi and her friends playing the girls.
I wish there was more of Takenaka, 5 and 6 were my favorite episodes because he caused so much awesome conflict (like with the pantsu fiasco).

11:59 PM
Aw, we got a sports/gaming question prior to the weekend. :( Sad
