@Gao I believe the question is wiki-locked, so I don't think it's possible to post a new answer. I'm okay with making a big edit since it's the purpose of wiki-lock.
Gao
Gao
01:00
oh i didn't even notice that i couldn't add an answer lol
will test it out in the preview and see how it looks after thinking through what should go in the columns
@Gao Side topic. I mostly use MAL for my anime database... and having DotA and Avatar be excluded is kinda annoying. As a non-anime user I would welcome you being inclusive to such a change.
Also, hopefully, obvious /mod cause each site should sustain a curated culture
Gao
Gao
01:16
@Peilonrayz Wow, I thought MAL has the most comprehensive anime database, but excluding good "anime" like DotA is a no-no in my book. Anime-Planet includes DotA, but they responded to my query that there won't likely be another anime like DotA added in the future, unless it's a new season for an existing entry in their DB.
Well the argument is basically racist "DotA and Avatar weren't made in Japan/SEA so are not anime because anime is Japanese at best SEA at worse" but IMO (as a dirty Westerner) the two basically are anime... I kinda get the racism because then Disney is anime but idk.
Gao
Gao
This is a shame. Almost all anime listing sites have some policy that will exclude some fine anime. Am I supposed to go find an excluded anime on IMDB now?
That is just dumb. Most anime are outsourced these days, there are no longer clear boundaries of what's made in Japan/SEA, and the inclusion of some countries besides Japan that could be considered anime is arbitrary.
Ofc I agree I believe DotA and Avatar (more prominently) are anime. But as an annoying rules laywer I can understand the simplistic distinction.
Gao
Gao
My current view is that American anime is still a bit better than Chinese anime, though the gap is not huge anymore. They each have their own strengths.
I can't imagine there being a license issue, so why not just allow the community to create and maintain their own unofficial database on their sites?
As a Westerner I can see why many cartoons would not be included in 'anime'. I wouldn't class Western cartoons as anime, but I would include Western animes...
Gao
Gao
01:23
An official MAL DB, plus a community-maintained DB of anime that might not meet the official guidelines.
Then users can fine-tune their searches to include/exclude entries from the unofficial DBs. Problem solved.
Eh, as a mod, some mods like to be overjealous in power. (not accusing Anime.SE) Life is s***... :/
Gao
Gao
I mean, there will always be work for the mods to do, just choose work that is better time spent for themselves and for the community.
Technically MAL is community driven... or at least the community added and approved the DotA/Avatar listing... then the 'community' removed the two :///
So a community and a community driven database is... eh... kinda odd
Gao
Gao
There could be more than one community DBs, and what I had in mind is that the users could pick any anime from any DB.
Or even make their own.
Totally agree... I probably am going to try merge multiple DBs into one for my personal site which tracks Anime I am watching :)
I probably won't put to the public... because cba with proper security and stuff. Too much effort ;_;
Gao
Gao
01:37
@Peilonrayz there are already a number of services that do that, though I can't vouch for how well they work in practice as I don't use them.
On anime/cartoon: I'm no longer sure the distinction of anime/cartoon is as useful anymore. I think it just comes down to the culture/values presented or inherent in these animations that is the distinction. It just happens that Japanese anime has a longer history than most other kinds of animations and I personally find them to have produced the best implementations and explored the widest range of themes.
But they're usually so damn formulaic and sometimes retarded that it's harmful to just copy Japanese anime. Chinese donghua kind of let me down because it does more copying than trying to find its own styles, and the copying are usually the bad stuff in anime anyway.
The odd thing is the music never lets me down. Good anime/donghua music is plentiful, but good story/implementation/themes are rare.
@Peilonrayz I use AniList. Great UI, portability between MAL if I ever need it, maintained by a single dev, airing times, big community, lets you favourite anime, manga, characters, VAs, staff, custom lists, and has an app.
Not to get too political... but hopefully the distinction is lessened in the coming years. ATM cartoons have a clear woke formula which IMO is over done and boring. With a clear lack of design or animation interests for the viewer. Interesting you have the similar ideas for 'Chinese anime'. The Chinese anime I've watched have all been good, but I'll admit I've not watched/seen many.
Also says where anime is being streamed.
Oh, doesn't include Western anime though.
OMG I just saw the The King's Avatar has an anime (Chinese show about an eSports legend for a non-existent game), so now I have to go watch that.
@Otaku ty, the portability between MAL is probably important for me. I made a simple site with all the anime features I need and just scrape MAL... (I'm probably breaking some TOS) :(
In somewhat tangential news I've just finished watching Solo Levelling S2:E6 for like the 6th time. OMG sooooooo goood.
Gao
Gao
@Peilonrayz OK, to not get too political I'll make this short: I also haven't seen that many Chinese anime, but their biggest problem is the themes explored is limited to basically 1. student life/mundane happy life, 2. xiangxia. 3. multiverse convoluted shit.
01:48
@Peilonrayz Well, animation wise. The story is fine. But the animation is so good.
Gao
Gao
Probably the most formulaic out of western and eastern animation
@Otaku +++ :)
@Peilonrayz >probably breaking some TOS
yeah, probably ;)
Gao
Gao
the unfamiliar culture is probably why you find chinese donghua refreshing/interesting, while i like DotA becauses they're new, and find The Apothecary Diaries meh
If you decide to switch though (didn't realise I was apparently convincing you or something), the app is called MyAniList for some reason. So yeah, definitely a bit of confusion there.
01:51
@Gao Interesting. I'm totally new to the entire of China's culture so the problems you see I don't even understand. Even with your eloquent explanation.
@Gao To be fair, there's way too many isekai with the same base plot.
Gao
Gao
@Otaku you mean like journey of the west? xiangxia is basically always isekai
@Peilonrayz It doesn't have to be a problem for everyone. It's just too escapist for my taste. But the best Chinese donghua I have watched is probably I'm Joybo.
@Gao Somewhat. I feel like isekai is more of a LitRPG style (with a system, unlockable skills, and leveling), and xiangxia is similar but without the "game" elements.
I read way too much LitRPG, wuxia, and xiangxia, now that I think about it...
Gao
Gao
@Otaku Oh, I was thinking of The Legend of Sword and Fairy where I think there are systems, unlockable skills and leveling too, just not well known outside of Asia.
Vaguely related, but I've been listening to so much Japanese and Chinese it almost feels more familiar than english at this point.
02:03
@Otaku lol, I was watching Momentary Lilly Ep2 and was like "I feel like I'm on the boundry of understanding what's going on here"
Gao
Gao
@Otaku "maintained by a single dev" - is that a plus? "portability between MAL" - basically all anime listing sites support importing from MAL, but without the accompanying export option (not too sure of AniList as it has an API, so it might be exportable, but Anime-Planet has neither)
(without subs)
@Gao For sure. Not trying to say you're wrong or anything :)
Gao
Gao
@Otaku Where does it list that info? could you give an example? and does it mean e.g. it's streamed in australia, or it's streaming on netflix (but unsure of the region)?

Q: Do Pokémon nonverbally lie in the Pokémon anime?

Poke TeenI am sorry for the last question I posted. I just want to know the answer to this question from a trusted forum. Favorite Pokemon include Scorbunny, Minun, Sobble (maybe) and Cyndaquill.

@Gao "is that a plus" I like supporting a single dev over a company, especially if the product is good.
Gao
Gao
02:10
@Otaku i was thinking more of the bus factor, but AniList's UI is sleek no doubt about that
@Otaku (Many dislike me for asking the following question so not trying to be abrasive) Why is a single dev better than a company in your eyes? (I have by own opinion but I always like to learn from others)
@Gao Bus factor?
@Peilonrayz Sure, no worries. To me, a single dev working on a project has more passion and cares more about what they're doing than a company doing something for profit.
Might as well reward them for it.
@Otaku Reading the wiki is probably easiest: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_factor
Gao
Gao
@Otaku Just a word for what happens if the person got hit by a bus/retired/etc and the maintainership goes to...?
^ what Peilonrayz posted.
@Otaku Thanks
02:13
@Gao Oh yeah, that's a good point. Uh... might have to find something else in that case then (assuming they're deceased)...
@Gao :O You got my name 100% right. Thanks! (Not many can)
Gao
Gao
But it's incredible how Josh (?) achieved so much in so short a time compared to competitors which are companies with bigger teams
@Gao It's not an outright feature, but people have written scripts that export to MAL. No idea if that exists for other platforms, but it definitely does for AniList.
Gao
Gao
@Peilonrayz I just use the @ reply for autocomplete and deleted the @
@Gao So many can do the same... but somehow can't ;) (legit I have a like 30% correct name rate)
02:16
Going off of pure efficiency, it might be faster to hit @, start typing the name, click, then ctr + left arrow to delete the at, then hit enter than it is to type the whole thing.
Gao

This is one such cross-site exporter: malscraper.azurewebsites.net
A-P is either added manually or web scrapped.
> There's now a scraper for AnimePlanet.
there it's said scrapped because no API :(
@Otaku It is not in fact, more efficient (mostly because hitting enter when the auto-completed name pops up doesn't fill it in, it sends the message)
@Peilonrayz What's your opinion about it?
@Otaku I largely agree with you. Maybe some differences in nuance but nothing to cry about IMO.
The site is beautiful and stuff so better than a team obviously.
(ehhh, my answer my seem suspect. I ask without giving my input first because I've recognized people tend to just (lie) and agree with me on things. Mostly because if I hone in on asking whys some people struggle to answer without losing face. I prefer the truth... so my answer my look like capitulating to you. Just like others do to me. To be clear my answer is my truth.)
02:42
@Peilonrayz Don't worry, it's fine. Besides, I'd rather debate than have someone pointlessly agree with me in the moment.
@Otaku Thank you. Agreed. :)
03:08
@Otaku Oh I forgot you're an INTJ where I'm an INTP... XD
(I'd have to retake the test to get the sub-type again :/)
03:30
Anime spin-off from Western cartoons do make it seems unfair/complicated though. PPG is a cartoon, but PPGZ is an anime. Same to Marvel cartoons, and then there are Marvel Anime
@AndrewT. some (hopefully unneeded) mod thing here ^
No worry, I trust everyone here to self-moderate the chat (I'm mostly lurking here, only online so that I can be pinged when needed)
Great :)

@Peilonrayz Hey, you read my profile :D
^.^ I tend to open people's profiles; the more I interact with you the higher the chance :)
(I'm a nosy son of a gun -- as the saying goes)
@Peilonrayz On a scale of 1 - 10, how weird am I? :)
@Otaku I'm pretty autistic so... IDK normal to me XD
If I had to say you're querky so maybe a 5 but eh I'm not counting

haven't watched anything recently because I've been traveling for an extended period of time. what are folks excited for in the upcoming season? ^_^
09:47
@Gao and they both suggest To Love Ru to Urusei Yatsura fans (see here and here ). I say we burn them down with extreme prejudice.
Alas, more seriously....
The issue isn't about the lack of listing sites.
The main issue is the utter lack of legal ways to watch anime. Sometime even in Japan.
Western streaming sites most of the time lack anything not mainstream/viral enough. And they keep popping out everyday, what do they expect? Even if paying for all of them wasn't already an issue... I have more issues with having to manage 10 accounts for different service.
Then you have the pathetic ones like the incompetent clowns behind Crunchyroll. They got their servers HACKED TO SERVE MALWARE once... but adding 2FA isn't their priority. IN 2025!
Want to turn to Blu Ray sets? First, this is only possible for "short" series (go ahead, buy disks for all One Piece episodes, I dare you). Second the disk often are simply missing.
The Great Jahy got exactly ONE disk, with a grant total of FOUR episodes on it.
and it is Japan only still.
... and then they cry about piracy.
They are the ones who carefully add hops so you CAN'T BUY THEIR STUFF (seriously, CAN REGION LOCK FRIGGING DIE? WE ARE WELL PAST THE MIDDLE AGE) but then they are surprised to see that those untapped customers turn to unofficial channels and pirate their shows
and then there I am, shooting myself in the foot as I still refuse to do the same.
Perhaps I am the bigger idiot.
10:17
Yeah, I can't watch many Japanese anime that I want due to licensing (and thus geoblocking). But I can buy and read Japanese digital manga directly on Japanese sites...
10:44
@AndrewT. Which qualifies you in a 0.01% of the potential market -_-'

@UnrelatedString This seems a good time to tell you a story. It is about some TV channel airing Popolocrois, and then forgetting to air the very last episode....
Gao

Popolocrois my childhood favorite
Gao

yea shuu is like misty
a more spoiled, tsundere misty
bad girl gets all the love
Are we talking about the same anime?
Because I could get the Tsundere part but as for spoiled...
Gao
Gao
17:07
wasn't she kind of a brat, at least at first?
she has some attitude issue iirc, at least compared to the mc prince
@SPArcheon-onstrike the sequel looks bad though so i didn't watch
@Gao Hyuu had nothing her whole life. The main "defect" she has would be pride since she lives a lie for almost the whole show.
And imho that lie while not visually horrific is still psychological nightmare fuel
Gao
Gao
thx for the correction. i honestly don't remember her name as i watched it in chinese
The "wind people" are so free that such freedom is the only way the can live.
Never settle. Never have friends. Never love.
What a good "freedom" is that.
Gao
Gao
at what age did you watch the anime? i was primary school and watched it on and off, so i don't have much impression of the plot, but i do remember a few scenes of her "reuniting?" with her wind people
@Gao that is mostly the ending, that doesn't solve every issue.
Gao
Gao
17:13
and it was a video game originally i think
@SPArcheon-onstrike wait, so did Hyuu just disappear from the story like misty?
@Gao There's a game of it, but I don't know if it was originally a game.
@Gao Replying to Gao, but addressed to all - what was the first anime you remember watching? For me, it was either Yu Gi Oh, one of the many Pokemon shows, or Digimon.
Gao
Gao
Honestsly don't remember, could be one in your list, YuYu Hakusho, Slam Dunk, Detective Conan, Chibi Maruko-chan, Doraemon, or some anime that was airing at the time.
I did watch some relatively obscure anime early in my anime watching career though.
@Otaku Yu Gi Oh The Abridged Series is gold you should watch it. It's better than the original version.
It's by LittleKuriboh I think.
@Gao Hyuu goes away with her people at the end of the show, just after basically demonstrating it was NOT needed and a different solution MUST exist.
that way, the usual status-quo is kept safe and she can be missing from the PS game without need for any explanation.
Gao
Gao
@SPArcheon-onstrike Must have dropped the show when that happened, just like when Misty left Ash and his team.
you know, the "filler content" curse.
so many adorable character disappear every year to that curse.
Gao
Gao
17:26
she's too complex for a side character. the mc's childhood friend would have no spotlight if hyuu continues in the story
One Piece had Apis...
gone with the filler arc
Gao
Gao
Bleach had Senna and that green haired girl with a male doppelganger (?), also gone with the filler arc
oh and Yoshino from the bount arc
@Gao she makes a short comeback later.
just in time to meet Naruto mustaches Ash.
Gao
Gao
@SPArcheon-onstrike By that time the art is already too different, though still a welcome change. There were a few interesting heroines in some movies, but I didn't watch them.
One was a pokemon iirc?
@SPArcheon-onstrike Do you know why he gets drawn with a "mustache"?
17:41
For a brief time after the Ash ark ended...
Gao
Gao
@Otaku Ash reached puberty and grew a mustache lol
@Gao It's the one with really condensed episodes, right?
@Gao ...huh.
Gao
Gao
@Otaku Yes, they're a fun watch.
Just googled what it is, apparently it points out plot holes and is satirical. Sounds interesting, but my backlog is too big as it is...
Liko was though to be Ash daughter.
depending on who you asked that would be Misty daughter...
Serena's...
Dawn...
Gao
Gao
17:48
The WHO's daughter?
Yea her design fits this new age better. Much better than the new Ash.
even HER.
Yes, some said that Liko was Ash and... LATIAS daughter.
Then came Nintendo, and Liko isn't related to any previous show.
what a waste
Gao
Gao
@SPArcheon-onstrike awww
is this the last movie before the transition to new art?
@SPArcheon-onstrike That would be interesting...
I lol'd hard when finding out about the conspiracy theory of Ash's mother and Professor Oak and Mimey
I wonder if these kids' show are intended for the adult audience from the start as well
It's not easy to pull off something that could be enjoyed by all kinds of people, like Shakespeares' plays mean different things to different classes of people, each not understanding what the other has read from the play
@Gao remember: in the Pokemon Gold game you find the now older Misty with someone that dashes away as you approach.
for years before the remake tried to make the guy more "different" that was thought to be Red (so basically Ash)
18:05
Highly recommend Make a Girl. Animation is by a YouTuber that does cool animations, and this is their first big project.
It’s a movie that came out a couple weeks ago.
Gao
Gao
> Mad respect for Pikachu.
Misty jealous
Brock jealous.
Only Pikachu happy for his best friend.
Damn Ash is popular with girls. Serena also kissed him, but Misty... she's too good for Ash.
@Otaku Though only in Japan…
18:21
@Gao In the anime, Ash canonically carries the "Misty Bait" with him during all seasons
it is also worth noticing that he DOESN'T use it, with the excuse that the other one "catches more pokemon"
yet the REAL reason he never uses it is that he almost lost it in DP
and after going crazy at the idea, he suddenly became overprotective with that bait...
also, there is the "Nintendo said that was not Misty and has also tried to remove any version of this trailer from the web in a totally not suspicious way"
> Not Misty, Ash journey was never going to end with the first season and have a different protagonist like the game do.
Source: pleaseTrustMeNintendoWouldNeverLie
Gao
Gao
@SPArcheon-onstrike Who are the 3 of them?
Source coincidentally almost the same as "FF7 totally started as a detective story, Tifa wasn't a last minute addition and Aerith death was not a revenge from the same guy that wanted Chrono dead for good and killed the entire first game cast off screen as soon as he managed to get hold of the sequel"
@Gao one is Miranda, from the same movie. The other two have no official identity. But consider this:
the scene in this trailer is nowhere in the final movie. It simply does not exist.
While this is common for anime it may also indicate this was some early cut of the plot that was scrapped very early.
Now... look at Miranda...
isn't that face familiar?
doesn't that look suspiciously like an aged up Violet, one of Misty's three sisters?
Gao
Gao
18:45
@SPArcheon-onstrike Looking up Miranda, she appeared in Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back and the 3D remake - god awful 3D
@Gao So, basically you have a woman looking like Misty sister, a woman looking like an older Misty and a kid that look like she could be Misty daughter. Then the kid runs toward a Pikachu and hugs them.
Easy to see that as "Dad is away filling the pokedex, left Misty and his pikachu at home with their daughter"
@SPArcheon-onstrike lol, probably not the best recommendation...
Gao
Gao
@SPArcheon-onstrike yea but it just looks like a yuri couple with their kid (ping YuriMaster)
@SPArcheon-onstrike hair is still different though, so don't think she's misty's sister. the trailer showed team rocket right before this scene, so i thought the kid is jessie when she was young lol
@Gao IIRC having tasteful adult content in children's shows is normal. As you would want the adult to somewhat enjoy the movie and increases the chance of bringing kids to watch.
@Gao There is also the "Ash is in a coma" one
Basically Ash would be hallucinating all the show after he got struck by the lighting in the first episodes.
The reasoning is that after that scene, many characters are suddenly more friendly towards him.
also, cursed image of the day.
Gao
Gao
19:04
lmao at suddenly more friendly towards him
