Anime CG breakdown reel

The thing I dislike about CG in anime is how it's often really choppy

this past season it seemed really evident to me in Parasyte, where background walking characters were CG animated and seemed to move abnormally slow

in high budget productions like the Evangelion Rebuild movies or the Fate/Stay Night UBW series, although very well hidden, but CG choppiness is still present (e.g., eva crowds and fate skeletons)

I have a theory... while I know nothing about the process, it's possible that the CG look choppy because anime is animated at 8/12fps (which is enough for the medium), and blending 8/12fps animation and 24fps CG (the minimum for fluidity) is difficult, thus maybe forcing CG to be at a lower than ideal framerate?

perhaps it's not just the frame rate and models too... since those CG models probably can't go off-model, so they look rigid and clunky when moving

this might explain why those in-between frames look really weird when you pause at the right time, since they're deliberately deforming the drawings to make it feel a lot more dynamic and "real"

@ʞɹɐzǝɹ I've seen 12fps (or so) anime with 30fps (or so) smooth CG and the video file obviously had the higher framerate, so I think the studios that mess up CG are just noobs

they look choppy because there is no squash and stretch. each frame is an absolutely still moment in time. if you did the same with real life recorded footage it would look choppy too but real life footage typically has the motion blur in every frame of movement

for smooth animation you need to simulate this motion blur with squash and stretch, take this shot from Nichijou and now watch it slowed down

@ʞɹɐzǝɹ The lack of motion blur is definitely a major factor, but I feel like the bigger issue is that Japanese animation studios just haven't mastered CG character animation in the same way that Disney/Pixar have.
