12:00 AM
the path simulator

You want to know more about it? Or what?

yes or else I'm going back to hacking the Cisco NAC Appliance server

... lol
First, have a read here:
Clicking on the first link in the main text of a Wikipedia article, and then repeating the process for subsequent articles, usually eventually gets you to the Philosophy article. As of May 26, 2011, 94.52% of all articles in Wikipedia lead eventually to the article Philosophy. The rest lead to an article with no wikilinks or with links to pages that do not exist, or get stuck in loops. There have been some theories on this phenomenon, with the most prevalent being the tendency for Wikipedia pages to move up a "classification chain." According to this theory, the recommend that the articl...

I got there in 1

After Logan read that, he wondered if the 94% statistic was due to random chance (i.e. would a random set of pages and links also generate 94%?).

12:02 AM
just clicked thge link that says Philosophy

... Yeah, nice try @user58512. lol

oh hmm interesting

So, I wrote a simulator to generate 4.1 million bogus pages and see how it ended up.
It's currently parsing the 5,900th one.

12:15 AM
wait you're creating 4.1 million fake wikipedia pages to make an extremely long chain away from philosophy??

No, creating 4.1 million random first links of Wikipedia pages to see whether the links to Philosophy are an anomaly, or are a likely outcome.

well just think about it
hmm

I can rationalize it either way, actually.
(Logistically speaking.)

Type in some terms in the search bar and see where those topics lead to.
I was curious how it they were connected
using JSONP requests made asynchronously to Wikipedia would probably be more efficient than generating bogus pages imo

12:31 AM
@Krazer But I don't want to use legitimate pages.
Plus, then I need an internet connection for it, which would be taxing in and of itself.
I don't think this website is wholly accurate.
I have "water" and "liquid" not connected.
Still fun to play with, though.
Ugh, I'm going to optimize this code tomorrow. This is stupid, it's going to take way too long unless I steal Mysticial's pi-generating work horses.

@Eric I believe it's taking the closest link and running with it. The reason they those two aren't connected is because there are to links to states of matter on the water page and viceversa

@Eric lol

@Krazer That could be. It just seems to be taking a longer path than necessary.
@Mysticial What, am I wrong? :P

lol

yeah the point of it is to take the first text link and run with that

12:42 AM
Gotcha. So, same concept.

yup
I thoroughly enjoyed this:

@Krazer Very soothing. This will be nice to listen to while working on frustrating code.

12:57 AM
@Eric Nah... OP2 for Death Note is MUCH better.

@Mysticial Sharing is caring. Link?

gimme a sec

Nope. Intense music only makes coding woe worse. :P

I want an alt death note ending where light wins
wins what you ask? the whole thing

@Krazer I'd prefer if he accidentally the whole thing.
Off for now. ttyl

1:04 AM
cya

bye

1:46 AM
@Eric I'm teaching lab right now
Oh he's not even here
What a waste

1:59 AM
xD

lol

2:09 AM
Anyone who wants the answer to this question for free should read dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Animal and also dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/King_Furry. I'd post it myself but I don't want to get any more upvotes in .

I'll pass this time. I haven't seen enough dragon ball to fairly answer that. And I think I've been hand-fed enough already. :P

I'm trying to limit my activity in so that I can get it off my top 3 on my user page. People need to ask more questions in , , and .

@LoganM If you wait a bit (as in maybe a few days) I'll probably ask,
"Why do villains never attack during a hero's long transformation sequence?"
a bit busy right now
I need to find some examples.

ah fuck... so much for that...

2:24 AM
Ask what the difference between tsundere and yandere is or something stupid like that. It'll probably get 10 upvotes and bring in Google traffic and all kinds of good stuff.

Nanoha is the one I remember the most for having ridiculous transformations. But I've seen a snippet of Heartcatch Precure and I think it's even worse.
@LoganM That hasn't been already asked yet?
^^ lol
Tsundere = Kugimiya Rie
Yandere = Yuno from Mirai Nikki

@Mysticial Clannad has the most ridiculous transformation:

oh that one. lol
Oh here it is:
The Heartcatch Precure Transformation:

@Mysticial You mean to tell me that girls don't transform like that in real life?

AHAHAHA
Good one.

2:32 AM
There's always Panty & Stocking:

fuck, I don't have an account

@Mysticial Does this work: youtube.googleapis.com/v/nEpy0znKHWs

hang on, watching another video atm
ah
It's not a very elaborate transformation though.

Did we want elaborate or ridiculous?

both?

2:51 AM
@LoganM Bah. :P

@Mysticial Can't find the one I was looking for. It probably got removed.

Damn... I did not expect Bungaku Shoujo to be such a serious show/movie...

@Mysticial really? I expected exactly that

@Krazer Well, I didn't read any of the commentary before watching it.
Goddamn... how the hell you fail at two suicides in the row?

2:57 AM
@Mysticial cut the wrong way obviously

I picked it up because I found it on Doki's homepage and Kana Hanazawa voiced the main character. So I was like... oh what the hell...

@Mysticial did you finish?

@Krazer I watched the two OVAs already, and I'm about 1:12 into the movie. (3/4 of the way through)

@Mysticial She also voiced the main character of Kuragehime, which is a great show. It even has tequila.

oooh...
maybe I should watch that
Yes, I will watch shows for the people who voice them. That's even worse than Type B... ahahahaha

3:05 AM
@Mysticial Seiyuu otaku are terrible people

@LoganM I know, shut up. :P

@Mysticial ... This whacked-out world.

Well shit... Now you all know my dark side....
At least I'm not the type who plasters my wall with seiyu posters or celebrates their birthdays.

Ooooh, burn.

@Mysticial At least you're not a densha otaku. They are the worst of the worst.

3:10 AM
densha otaku?

@Mysticial densha = train

oh

A train otaku?

@Eric Imagine a seiyuu otaku. Now replace all the creepy gravure photos with equally creepy train photos.

@LoganM ... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

3:14 AM
@LoganM shiny!

It's thanks to people like them that we have monstrosities like this:

@LoganM oh god...

私はゆっくりと死んでいる。

If you look at the related vids, there are like a dozen other train MADs with the exact same song.

ugh that white space

3:21 AM
Dat whitespace.
@LoganM WHY!?

I enjoyed these train parodies more.

@Krazer LOL!

I used to have a chart showing just how bad train otaku were compared to other kinds, but I can't find it.

@Krazer wow

@LoganM Did it get lost in your 10k Mikis?

3:29 AM
@LoganM the one from 2ch?

Suffice it to say that any time a new train line opens in Tokyo (especially if it's anime-themed), there are delays at every station. Recently there have been quite a few of cases of people jumping onto the rails en masse just to get better pictures.
@Krazer yeah

@LoganM wut

@Eric No, my Miki pictures are neatly organized. Nothing ever gets lost there.

@LoganM but that leaves the family responsible to the clean up bill afterwards... and that's such a dishonor nowadays

3:34 AM
@LoganM That's a relief. Rolls eyes

@Krazer In all the cases I know of, no one was run over, though plenty of trains have been delayed substantially.
So, as you can see @Mysticial, you can at least take comfort in the fact that both Politics and Train otaku are even worse than you are.

I guess that makes it a bit better. No amount of upvotes on SO would have redeemed me from the depths otherwise...

I'm not an otaku yet, I don't think. Let's see if any on this scale fit me...
PC otaku?

I'd say I'm halfway between Anime and Seiyu.
Since I don't exclusively following one person.
And I won't watch an obviously shit show just because someone voices it.

If I had to put myself in a category, it'd be eroge.

3:41 AM
That was pretty blunt.

Psst, what's eroge?

@Mysticial Ranks better than both anime and seiyuu in terms of harmlessness and normalness.

@LoganM Yeah, I saw... which has me wondering...

An or Ero-ga is a Japanese video or computer game that features erotic content, usually in the form of anime-style artwork. History Japanese eroge, also known as H-games or hentai games, have their origins in the early 1980's, when Japanese companies introduced their own brands of microcomputer to compete with those of the United States. Competing systems included the Sharp X1, Fujitsu FM-7, MSX, and NEC PC-8801. NEC was behind its competitors in terms of hardware (with only 16 colors and no sound support) and needed a way to regain control of the market. Thus came the erotic g...
I'd rather call it galge than eroge, but that isn't on the chart.

I see. I never realized you were in that category.

3:53 AM
@Eric Yup. 2 years ago I would have been anime, but now I spend probably 10 times as much time playing VNs and galge as I do watching anime.

Oooh, I like the ED for the movie...
@LoganM I've never dared to get into VNs.
I have an addiction habit for games.

I never knew one could be addicted to VNs. Now I'm dually proved wrong.

@Mysticial It's a far bigger time commitment, but it really helps for Japanese since you also get the written aspect (assuming it's not translated).

@LoganM I can barely understand 5-10% of the spoken Japanese in Anime... let alone the written part.
I might know a Kanji here and there from my Chinese background. But that's just about it.

@Mysticial You have a Chinese background?

4:00 AM
Not to mention that I never studied traditional. It was all simplified.
@Eric I'm ethnically Cantonese.

I should have known. I realized how stupid that question was after I asked it.

nah... nothing is obvious online

I've seen your (real) name, though.
Eh, still, I guess.
My last name is Swedish.

And my last name isn't even Cantonese.

It's not?
Ha. Shows what I know.

4:02 AM
It's Taishan. If it was in Cantonese, it's be "Yue" or "Yu".
The character being: 余
Pronounced "Yee" in Taishanese, "Yue" or "Yu" in Cantonese in Mandarin (albeit with completely different tones)

did you hear about the Lucky Star Spin off? miyakawahungry.com it's gonna be ustreamed ustream.tv/channel/…

@Mysticial Don't you get confused between Cantonese/Mandarin/Taishan a lot?

@Eric I'm jelly

@Krazer yup, I heard

@Krazer Why?
When pronounced, the first syllable is a dirty word. It's nothing to envy, lol.

4:05 AM
haven't decided what to think about it yet

@Eric exotic flair xD

@Eric No. Not at all. I understand 95% of spoken Cantonese, probably 5 - 10% Taishanese, and about 5 - 30% of Mandarin depending on the speed at which it is spoken.
So I can easily tell them apart.

@Krazer What, are you "Smith" or something?
@Mysticial That's awesome. respect++;

@Eric nah
@Mysticial mianese?

@Krazer ?

4:07 AM
@Mysticial He combined "Cantonese", "Taishin" and "Mandarin", I think.

lol, I'm not aware of anyone that mixes all 3.
My relatives sometimes mix Taishanese and Cantonese.
And I have some friends who mix Mandarin and Cantonese.
And of course my entire immediate family (including myself) mix Cantonese and English to a quite extreme extent. It's not even funny.

@Mysticial I've heard of Spanglish... but... really?

I often find myself starting a sentence in Cantonese, and ending it in English.

@Mysticial I sometimes mix Japanese and ghetto English

Or the whole sentence in Cantonese, but with all nouns or verbs in English.

4:09 AM
@Mysticial I meant the Minanese dialect (Taiwan, Fujian)

I do it habitually... Because that's what I grew up with.
To some extent, it actually takes me effort to speak 100% Cantonese.
And until about age, I dunno, 6 or 7? I had trouble speaking 100% English.

@Mysticial I'm guessing your childhood leading up to age 7 was exposed to people outside your family, right?

@Krazer That I don't know.

Generally, people who speak Minanese can also speak good Mandarin, but many people who speak Cantonese usually can't speak good Mandarin

@Eric not really, I went to school and all. But thinking back, I think I was probably well into Elementary school before I finally developed "language-modes".

4:12 AM
Language-modes?

Subconscious language modes.
I'm either in English mode, or Cantonese mode.

@Mysticial I have trouble initializing my input modules

I have extreme difficulty listening to two conversations, one in each language, at the same time.

@Mysticial of the same content?

@Krazer I dunno. I never tried to study myself that much.
I'm not exactly a linguistic either.

4:15 AM
I took French, but I never got much use out of it
Japanese so I can read raws

Although at this point, I think I'm starting to develop a 3rd mode, that absorbs spoken Japanese and English text...

Chinese because they are taking over the world
and English cuz that what everyone uses here in the states

But yeah... I grew up natively bilingual.
I knew no English when I started Preschool.

Neither did I. Because I never went to preschool. :)

When I tried to learn Mandarin in college, I found that my Cantonese was a double-edged sword.
In that it both helped me connect to basic things. But at the same time, got in the way of me actually learning the language...

4:21 AM
How so?

A lot of the grammar is the same. So that helps with the basics.
But...
Because I'm not a kid anymore, and I'm past my childhood "prime", you subconsciously try to connect things with what you already know.
That's how accents form.
The fact that Cantonese and Mandarin have so many similarities, only made it worse.
Not only was it affecting how well I could speak it, but it also got in the way of learning all the grammar and such.

hmm we've been getting a lot of google traffic this month

Yikes. So, did you give up on it, or what?
@Krazer A "lot"? Like, up 25% from last month? 50%?

@Eric kinda... I had more urgent things to do during my last year in College.

Yeah, no doubt.
I'm taking languages because I need non-science non-art courses.
And apparently, Psychology is an art.

4:24 AM
I'm pretty sure if somebody dumped me in mainland China by myself, I can pick it up in a few months.
But... oh well...

@Eric a bit over 70% this month is search traffic

@Krazer woah...

@Krazer That's AWESOME!
I thought we'd be around 40%. Or less.

Unrelated question: what happened to that Mi Yodeya chat room? Does it still exist?

Let's find out...

4:27 AM
It's dead I think

forked, but still frozen

too much controversy

Not deleted.

We're talking about 7700 right?

yeah
frozen, but not deleted

4:30 AM
yeah

Frozen rooms have that brownish shade.
Deleted rooms are faded out.

overall search traffic is still less than 1/5 of the traffic since the past month
SO is still the clear #1 referrer
traffic is starting to flat out again

@Krazer How bad?
'Cuz currently I've still got visits/day going up quite steadily.

@Eric I doubt he can give any specifics

@Eric not too bad, new visits are down slightly
overall visits are steady

4:36 AM
@Eric If you're using my data, that's on average ~1 week old.

@LoganM Yeah, I know. But it's not a terrible indicator.
@Krazer That's good news, I guess.

Oh they're adapting Mirai Fukuin for theaters for this year

What does the word "Haruka" mean? (besides being a name)

@Mysticial just hiragana?

Haruka, meaning "spring flower" OR "DISTANT" in Japanese, may refer to: *Haruka (given name), a Japanese commonly feminine given name **Haruka, any of various characters with the given name *Haruka (train) *Haruka or HALCA, a Japanese satellite *"Haruka" (Melody song), a single by Melody *"Haruka" (Tokio song), a single by Tokio *Haruka 17, a Japanese media franchise See also *Harukanaru Toki no Naka de *Harukanaru Toki no Naka de Hachiyō Shō

4:41 AM
@Mysticial distant or remote

@Eric ah... I should've googled.

@Mysticial Yeah. But I ask stuff here that I could Google, too. Sometimes hearing from people is better, lol.

@LoganM also spring breeze

I'm hearing it right now in the ED for Bungaku Shoujo.
So I knew it was an actual word, and not just a name.

Google-sensei sure is knowlegable
typically 遥か and 春風

4:44 AM
@Krazer Never heard that one. I'd assume 春風 would be harukaze.

@LoganM it is I keep forgetting the ze for some reason

Oh shit... I should've recognized that first character as being in 香港.

@Mysticial wat?

香港 = Hong Kong

the 香 is the ka is the name haruka (2nd kanji)

4:47 AM
oh wait...
It's not the same...
wtf...

春香

香 means fragrant
Oh, I got confused by 春香 on wikipedia.
The small font didn't help.
They looked the same from far away.

@Mysticial doesn't it also mean incense?

@Krazer I'm not sure. But 香港 (Hong Kong), literally means "fragrant harbor".

@Mysticial such irony in the name xD

4:50 AM
香, is fragrant in the positive sense. (as in smells good)
@Krazer yeah...
I'm not sure about 港. It means harbor. But it's written Cantonese, so I don't know what else it implies.

"Xianggang" is Mainland China's romanization of "Hong Kong" using Mandarin pronounciation

correct

originally it was Heung Kong I believe

@Krazer It's actually pronounced "Heung gong".

so close

4:51 AM
With a high-steady tone for "Heung", and a mid-rising tone for "Gong".

<- Only has Mandarin Module installed

Nobody actually writes with Cantonese romanizations.
You translate what you need to say from spoken Cantonese to Mandarin. Then you write it.

They do, but they are trivialized by the mainland

Translate word-for-word, not a "real" translation. Because you want the word, not the translation.

嗨 你好

4:55 AM
damn, I don't know that first character.
Is 嗨 already simplified?

嗨海每母
@Mysticial 是的

k, then I don't think I've studied it.

@Mysticial the first is more of a loanword, notice the 口 radical

Loan word from?

english, it's pronounced like "hi"

4:59 AM
oh
