12:00 AM
So $170 ea. Still not bad.

dual-slot enclosure with support for USB3 and 3TB. They are hard to find.
I have two of them. One has proper 3TB support, but unstable USB3. The other has stable USB3, but not complete 3TB support.

I use esata on the unstable USB3 enclosure.
And I found a work-around for the one without full 3TB support.
Mine are actually enclosures. Not docks.
Although I do have docks as well.

Yeah, this was in the enclosures section. Saw the thumbnail and loved it, lol.
@Mysticial You tell no lies, I can't find a single one.

It only has partial 3TB support.
But it's good enough if you're careful.

12:05 AM
Define "careful".

They don't use the correct 3TB format.

Oh, yikes...

So you try to plug in a preformatted 3TB with data into it, it's recognized as not-formatted.

You have to reformat them before use, then?

Likewise, if you format a 3TB from inside it and move it outside to another device, it's also not-formatted.
So as long as you keep the drives inside, you're good.

12:07 AM
I should first figure out if ExHDD or HDD+Enclosure is cheaper.

Budget computer accessory shopping sucks.

The USB3 is defective, both before and after RMA with a new one.
It's a design flaw.

Aw, that's complete garbage...
False advertising!

But the esata is fine - as long as you have mobo support for it.

12:08 AM
Hm. I think I do, but not worth the risk.

@Eric It's even worse than that.
It works fine for a few minutes. Then it just disconnects and goes unstable.
You can find my 1-star review down there somewhere.
I gave a 2-star first. Then after I RMA'ed and got a new one with the same problem, I gave a second review with 1-star.

Yeah, found the 1-star.

"Update on the defective USB3 Review"
^^ That one is mine.

Seems others are not having the same problem, tho.
Wonder why...

They are actually.

12:11 AM
Well, I was looking at the "helpful" counts.

This 2-star one has the same problem: "None on first. second one worked okay."
Those helpful counts don't mean much unless they are double-digit. For all we know, they are the manufacturers trying to screw it in their favor.

lol
Good point.

The top review on the silver stone one is my review. 4/5: newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256078
"Solid. But 3TB support is indeed only "partial"."

BTW is this going to happen anytime soon? And if so, is there some catch? One 60TB hard drive could fit everything I've ever downloaded and still be about 50% free.

@LoganM It will probably cost a heap and take another 3-5 years to hit production.

12:15 AM
@LoganM Even if the tech was ready, they won't push it out so fast. They'll try to farm as much money as possible.

Sad. I could actually use that.

I'm waiting for the new Li-ion tech to come out.
They discovered it in like 2010, and still not even a second bit of news on it.
A battery of the same size as conventional ones lasted 30+ days and charged in under an hour. :(

It's called an RTG. :)

Just reading the other candidates for the election, I'm wondering why mattytommo thinks his 101 rep accounts on other SE sites with most recent activity months ago matters at all.
IMO accounts on other sites shouldn't matter anyway, but if you're going to use that as an argument at least go answer some questions on that site.

12:33 AM
@Mysticial ... Cute, but no. lol
@LoganM He may have high upvote counts on those sites (giving votes). But I agree, it's irrelevant.

The joke about the Mars Curiosity Rover is that NASA got tired of sand-storms so they went with an RTG instead.

Oh, lol.

@Eric Nope. 2 of the sites he created the account 10 months ago and hasn't showed up since, and hasn't cast any votes. The third he's showed up as recently as 1 month ago, and casted a grand total of 1 vote.

I figured that was appropriate.

I think the only thing worth mentioning about other sites is if you're a moderator there.

12:38 AM
@Mysticial I dunno, if you have 3k+ rep, it's not a bad idea. It shows that you understand multiple sites' rules and are willing to learn to branch out.

I bet by the next election, half the candidates will have 10k flags.

@Mysticial This is the technology I was referring to.
And yes, they most likely will.

> Northwestern University research team sandwiched clusters of silicon with graphene sheets, which would avoid battery fragmentation.
Hey, that's my school.

Go talk to them.
Ask them what the F is taking so long.

Where I used to be .

12:40 AM
Oh. I thought you were there til May.

I'm at UIUC until May.

Oh. :(

@Eric 3k means different things on different sites. On Chemistry it's pretty notable. On Math it means you spent a few months answering basic calculus questions.

@LoganM Well, same thing on SO. But it means you get access to basic moderator tools.
I'm not using it as an indicator of veterancy, but instead one of available tools.

Tools are going to be basically the same on SO as any other site. I think it's a bit notable if you're an experienced user on a migration target site, but probably not for other sites.

12:49 AM
But likely, if you have them, you've at least used them once. So you probably know the rules there.

I don't know about that. I've used the moderation tools here, but not to actually do any sort of moderation. Mostly just for lulz. Also on graduated sites mod tools are at 10k IIRC.

But someone applying to be a mod would probably have the right mindset to do so. Plus, we can still check their profiles.
And yeah, some tools are at 10k
Lesse...

It's 2k on betas right?

Ah yeah, 3k for closing/reopening.
On graduated.

Damn, I still have a long way to go to 2k on Anime.SE.
And an even longer way on meta.SO.

12:54 AM
I'm beating you on Anime.SE. :)

shuddup

Tee hee.

Although 10k on meta.SO is probably more interesting than 2k on Anime.SE.
As far as I can see, Anime.SE doesn't need much moderation.

Meta SO is boring. :(
All business. No fun.

1:10 AM
@Eric Is Meta ever fun? I don't think I've seen any Meta.X.SE sites which looked riveting enough that I wanted to make an account just to participate there.

@LoganM Same here. I made one on SO only because of my OCD.

@LoganM meta.SO is hilarious when people post rants.

Q: Rename the [occurences] tag

EricCan we have the occurences tag renamed (and synonymized) to occurrence? The latter is how the word is actually spelled in English.[1][2][3] A note: I'm not totally convinced we need this tag in general, but if kept, it should be changed as above.

^ That is all I needed it for. lol

There was one case where somebody from our C++ room called the OP a bitch and got 20 upvotes and a reversal badge for it.
It was amazing.

That, and upvoting helpful things.
@Mysticial ... LOL?

1:12 AM
@Eric It's deleted now.

Sadface. No screenshot?

But I have a link handy for when one of us gets to 10k.
No screenie. :(

:(
Do we know anyone who has 10k there?

nope. But if Madara wins, then yeah. Although I don't think he'd be allowed to share it.

Madara has only 6,261...

1:13 AM
Since a moderator can see additional things that 10ks can't see.

@Mysticial Meta.Math gets those all the time, as does MO. The MO ones are really fun to read if you can before they get deleted.
Are SO mods also Meta.SO mods? It seems like the latter requires some different skills from the former (knowledge of SE-wide policy for one), but I didn't see anyone in the election discussions talking about this.

@LoganM yes they are
For the same reason as the normal sites.
And they are trusted not to mess with bug-reports and feature-requests that are normally handled only by devs.

I really feel like it would be worthwhile to split Meta.SO into Meta.SO and Meta.SE, with the latter servicing all SE sites. It's pretty hard to browse Meta.SO because I can't tell what's SO-specific and what's across the whole network.

@LoganM They're trying to. But that "6-8 weeks" have become more than a year now.

@Mysticial I see. Then it'll probably never happen.

1:27 AM
I think one of the big problems right now is how to deal with the mass migrations.

Just FYI Andro Selva dropped out of the race. He was in 25th place. Madara's 10th place position seems to have solidified as well, with larger gaps on both sides.

@LoganM Bhuro, Neal, and kiamlaluno remain! Who will drop out next!? xD

@Eric I'm surprised they're all positive. Maybe people didn't feel any need to downvote them since they're already effectively out of the running.

Yeah. Like they're trying to give each of them a carrot or a consolation prize.
Also, Logan, if you enjoy people being idiots about Astrophysics, this is for you:
I'm currently watching the second video, and it's just... ugh, lol.

1:45 AM
Video 1: incredibly stupid. No one would pass our introductory physics class here believing that sort of stuff.

Yeah, sadly the second video isn't as wrong. But it's still really stupid.

lol
The vortex movement isn't wrong actually. If you actually compare the sun's velocity relative to the galaxy center and compare it with the orbital speeds of the planets, it's actually does look like a slow rotating vortex.

I think you accidentally a verb.

And plot on a reference frame that static to the center of the galaxy.
non-rotating
Our moon's orbit is never convex to the sun.
Simply because it orbits the Earth so slowly.

If the Sun was constantly moving at 60 degrees relative to the galactic plane, then yeah, it would be helical. But it's not always doing that. It does bob up and down a small bit (there's a diagram down on the page).

1:52 AM
@Eric Well, only at two points in the sun's orbit would the ecliptic be parallel with the orbital motion.
At those points, you'd get a Frisbee instead of a vortex.
Everywhere else, you'll get a slanted vortex.
Up to 60 degrees slanted since that's what the inclination between the ecliptic and the galactic plane is.

@Mysticial What's wrong is that in the picture the sun is shown ahead of the planets on the trajectory. If you shift to the sun's frame of reference, they'd be orbiting points quite a bit displaced from the sun.

@LoganM That part is definitely wrong.
The sun is not ahead.

@Mysticial Two? Why not five?

As for video 2, it's not as factually wrong simply because there aren't enough words given to describe what he's showing. I have no idea what he's trying to depict for a lot of it. And it's still stupid.

@Eric How fast does the inclination of the ecliptic precess? If it's less than the orbital period of the sun, it's can't be more than 2.

1:57 AM
@LoganM I think he's trying to say that the Sun is also moving in a giant helix, curved around the center of the galaxy. That's all I got, it wasn't as descriptive as the first.

It's kinda like how we only have two equinoxes per year.

@Mysticial Oh, sorry, I misread "ecliptic".
My bad.

But what's all that stuff with random fiery gas falling off into the center of the galaxy? I don't even know what that's supposed to be.

@LoganM I think they were trying to show it like a shuttle reentering the atmosphere.
Which is just 100% dead wrong.

I'm actually not sure if there's any precession of the ecliptic. The precession of the equinoxes and the axes tilt of the Earth is caused by tidal effect (I think) from the sun. But in a galaxy...

1:59 AM
@Mysticial It would slightly, I guess, due to the axis of the Earth's rotation. But really not very much.

*correction, precession of the equinoxes is just Apsidal precession from the other planets. (and general relativity)

Okay, that I didn't know. :P

Actually wait... no
there's two things.

@Mysticial That's correct. GR is much less significant for the Earth, but for Mercury it's very important.

Apsidal precession is the rotation of the elliptical orbit. That's caused by GR and the other planets.
Precession of the Equinoxes is rotation of the Earth's axis tilt. (currently pointed at the North Star)
That's caused by tidal effects, and has a 20k year cycle.

2:04 AM
Are we still talking about the Earth? Axial precession is a really small effect for all practical purposes.

Axial precession is the change in the axis tilt? That's another independent factor that I didn't even touch on.
I'm aware of 4 types of precession with the Earth (that probably applies to all planets at varying degrees)

I thought that's what you meant by "Precession of the Equinoxes"

1. Precession of the equinox: The direction of rotation migrates on a 20k year cycle
2. Apsidal precession: is the rotation of the elliptical orbit
3. Precession of the axis tilt: From low tilt to high tilt of the Earth's rotation
4. Precession of the inclination of the orbit. The Earth's orbit will vary periodically with the invariable plane (the weighted average of the planes of all the planets)
I read something about increased impact events when the Earth's inclination aligned with the invariable plane - since that's where the bulk of the leftover asteroids lie.
At other times, the Earth passes through the invariable plane twice per year 180 degrees apart.

I only know of two kinds, namely axial precession and perihelion precession.

perihelion precession is obviously the same as apsidal precession

2:11 AM
yes
Actually I think #4 is referring to nodal precession, which I did know about (but not that term)

I wasn't sure what the term was called anyway.
All I knew was that the inclination wobbled on a cycle.

I haven't studied orbit dynamics since high school physics. I got out of all the college-level courses where this would have come up, so it's not something I'm knowledgeable about.

I got all this wikipedia... so...

@Mysticial I was wondering where you got your Astrophysics degree from. ;)

Those endless hours you waste...
@Eric You start by reading about something like politics and presidents. And half an hour later you're on black holes and supernovas...

2:19 AM
OMG, did you ever have Wikipedia races?
So much fun.

I don't dare to do those. :)

They're pretty much impossible online.
No cheat detection. :(
They're fun to do in class, though.

In principle, we should be able to characterize all the different types of precession. The earth's motion is determined by 8 parameters (2 initial position, 3 initial velocity, and 3 angular momentum about axis). Hence, at most 8 different kinds of precession can exist if we account for everything. Though there might be multiple types of precession which affect the same parameters, but are caused by different physics, and so they would have different names.

You basically build a graph of all of wikipedia. Then you do Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm.

@Mysticial ... That's even more cheating than using the search bar. That's like, O(n log n) efficiency.

2:22 AM
2 initial position? Shouldn't it be 3?
Or are you normalizing one of the reference frames?

@Mysticial I'm equating any 2 points on the same 1-dimensional orbit.

@LoganM ah, so you are normalizing
to get rid of one dimension

Yes. I'd view it as a quotient map through some sort of a 1-dimensional fibration, but what you said is essentially the same thing.
@Mysticial Easier way to cheat: add the relevant link to a page you can easily get to, like the starting page.

@LoganM lol
Yeah, the basic rules are: No editing, no search bar, no URL bar, no leaving Wikipedia, and no categories.

@LoganM lol

2:29 AM
I also just noticed.
The video places Jupiter outside of Neptune's orbit.

@Eric I see. I didn't know that rule. I guess you'll have to do it without being easily traceable then. But that's what multiple computers are for.

(Between it and Pluto.)

@Eric wow

@LoganM Yup, lol. You really have to cheat, if you're going to at all. ;)

You basically run a script on the computer to do a breadth-first search.
Assuming you don't have the graph of wiki built up.

2:32 AM
@Mysticial Have you ever heard the thing about all pages linking to Philosophy?

nope

It's a big enough deal that there's a Wikipedia project page on it.
Clicking on the first link in the main text of a Wikipedia article, and then repeating the process for subsequent articles, usually eventually gets you to the Philosophy article. As of May 26, 2011, 94.52% of all articles in Wikipedia lead eventually to the article Philosophy. The rest lead to an article with no wikilinks or with links to pages that do not exist, or get stuck in loops. There have been some theories on this phenomenon, with the most prevalent being the tendency for Wikipedia pages to move up a "classification chain." According to this theory, the recommend that the articl...

wow
they take this shit seriously

It's quite cool, though.

The first paragraph isn't very informative. Any such link chains with finitely many entries must follow one of those patterns. Even philosophy does. It gets stuck in a 2-element loop Philosophy -> Reality -> Philosophy
Of course, that means that Reality also has the exact same statistics as Philosophy in that respect.

2:37 AM
Well, it's obviously not possible to have an infinite entries in the link.
Unless the pages are changing.

The point is that 94% of them lead to Philosophy (as part of the two-page loop). It's not like there's one for Philosophy, one for Physics, one for The Universe, one for Human Beings, etc.

Q: What is this historical question bullshit?

Erik ReppenEither a question is useful to the community or it is not. I get that the StackOverlords have ambitions but why are we locking beautiful questions with lots of interesting answers just because we want quick and tidy answers to problems that are sometimes complete and total disasters of complexity...

^^ oh yeah...

If 24% were Philosophy, it would be different.

Agreed, but if you did it's possible to have another case.

@Mysticial Look at Andrew's comment. lol

2:38 AM
It either does to Philosophy or it ends in a loop that doesn't touch it.

@LoganM What do you mean?

Since this is discrete, it's not possible to have any chaotic attractors.

@Eric While the 94% figure is impressive naively, without anything to compare it to I don't have any way to tell whether it's impressive or not.

@LoganM What else would it be compared to? It means that ~6% do not end in the Philosophy-Reality chain.

@Eric That one was replying to @Mysticial's comment that infinitely many pages are impossible.

2:41 AM
Oh, my bad.
@Mysticial I love how this guy says "I shouldn't use StackOverflow while drunk", then tells the community to have drinks while thinking about it.

@Eric You have to understand the statistics of this. Compare it to a random dynamical system on 4.1 million entries with a fixed number of dead links and pages without links. See what percentage of the system is encompassed by the largest cycle. I don't have any intuition for what it would be.

This is too good. :P
@LoganM That's a good question, actually. I'm going to write a simulator for that.

You're basically searching for the largest highly-connected component group in graph-theory.

I like that someone favorited it.

That was me
I need to start favoriting all of these meta rants so I can come back to them when I hit 10k.
no close votes yet. I'm impressed.

2:47 AM
@Mysticial Can you see favorited questions that are deleted when you hit 10k?

@Eric yeah
check my SO favorites list.
downvoted deleted stuff all over the place

And upvoted deleted stuff.
I wonder how much rep was lost from these.
... You favorited a question you answered? xD

@Eric I keep an eye on all the big ones that I've answered.
They have a tendency to attract tons of crap answers from people wanting to piggyback off of them for rep.
And if left unchecked, they'll eventually get to 30 answers and go auto-wiki.

Oh you see it now?

I know what you did.
Yeah.

How did you figure it so fast?

C'mon, give me some credit! :(
I forgot about the zero-width space. lol

yep :P

I realized it as soon as I inspected the element

3:12 AM
Can't see it, but I do like that SO courteously offers to perform a Google search for me for "poop poop poop poop poop poop poop poop"

@LoganM The OP basically rage-quite after his question got closed as NC.
Then he edited the question to include a picture of shit in a toilet.

@Krazer
I've had way too much fun in chat today. I feel like it should be against the rules.

Rules against fun?! Blasphemy!

@Krazer See, right there. You were having too much fun. You're suspended.

@Eric but I don't own any suspenders

3:17 AM
We are technically a "Recreation" site. Personally I'd rather be under Arts or Culture, but there are times when recreation is good too.

@LoganM I thought for sure we'd be Arts.
@Krazer Buy some. Do I look like a suspender salesman to you?

if we were a site about animation and drawing, we might be considered arts
@Eric make you have some under that vest

What categories are SciFi and Movies & TV?

@Eric Rec along with Gaming

@Krazer Scifi is classified as Arts, even though they aren't producing any. I think it's just whatever category the Area51 proposal was made in, so if we had been made as Arts originally we might be in that category.

3:21 AM
@Krazer Doubt they'd fit even if I did. I'm like 4 feet tall, you're... 2. Ish.
@LoganM Ah, so we can blame the proposer.

@Eric but they stretch!
@LoganM probably
TV is arts too

Yeah. We're odd man out.
NBD.

I don't think we'd fit in culture (most of those are about languages or broad aspects of culture, we're pretty narrow by comparison), but I think we could be in Arts. Not like it matters anyway though.

if we had more produation question then mapybe but as is rec is a good fit

I think we have more production questions than scifi as is, but w/e
Also, Politics just hit 90 days. They haven't been shut down yet. Any bets on what's going to happen?

3:28 AM
I think the community mods will at least warn us if they are gonna shut us down

@LoganM They will be. 91 visits/day and 2 q/day + major internal issues.
Hopefully it happens in the next 6 days so we're not even looked at.

@Krazer I don't think they will shut us down without good reason. Our stats are reasonable.

... This needs to go.
And yeah, our stats are still going up. I think as long as that happens, it's okay.

I think this one is worse.

both are very niche categories imo

3:32 AM
@Krazer They would need more q/d. We're still generating good content.

Yeah esp with the spring season coming

@LoganM Yeah. That's awful. I don't even know why it's there, it would be like having one for jQuery or Red Hat.
@Krazer Spring = more anime? :P

@Krazer To be fair, so are we. We have fewer users than either of them, and yet our traffic stats are quite a bit better in a couple of months than theirs are in a year.
@Eric Good idea: someone go read the manga for the big releases in spring and ask lots of questions about them

How do you reply and embed the image? Usually mine just replies and links.

3:37 AM
I just hit the reply link and then pasted the url

Hm. Weird.

@Krazer Sadly the only one I'm up-to-date enough to ask about is Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. Which is a very good series, but I don't think it'll be a high traffic one.

a lot of original series this season

Hey, it worked.

I kinda enjoyed hataraku maou-sama

3:39 AM
Do we have many people who watch A Certain Scientific Railgun?
Except Mysticial, of course. Who is conspicuously absent. :P

Devil survivor and suisei look interesting

@Eric I do. It's a pretty popular show so it wouldn't surprise me if we did.

@LoganM The second season is in that list, is why I ask. It's one of the few I recognize. If you plan to watch it as it comes out, that would be a good topic for some questions.

I wonder if we are going to see any ITEM action or daihasen side story action with the Queen

@Mysticial Whoa, that question was closed but not deleted.

3:43 AM
not yet at least

Shingeki no Kyojin looks good. I might try it, if I can find it with quick releases.

The manga is not bad alot of action
The Anime Mirai Shorts look cool too

Given that a mod closed it, why wouldn't he delete it right away?

@LoganM Someone else might. Like casperOne. Cough xD

It's usually the 20ks that delete it.
The mods are mostly hands-off on meta aside from closings.
And obvious off-topic stuff.

It's 5am and I'm on a caffeine rush grading lab reports. I also have to teach a lecture in 3 hours and I haven't slept at all yet. Other than that, everything's great.

What subject?

Introductory Physics. We're studying electrical circuits right now. Luckily it's something I can teach despite being practically asleep.
I haven't seen you much on the main site recently. Are things getting busier for you as well?

Drink one Italian Espresso. (Really little, it's a lot stronger than american coffee.) You'll be awake lol
@LoganM Yes.
Definitely.

I'm just about to get to the part of the semester where I have essentially no free time. I'm hoping I can at least check in on the site daily and read the new posts, but even that's looking difficult.
Anyway I need to get back to grading. See you later.

Eheh yeah, the academic year is almost over no? Where are you located?
Oh sure, see ya! :)

@Alenanno I'm in the US. Our 2nd semester started late January and ends in late May.

Same here! :P Finally something similar between our school systems lol
