Q: Should anime / manga names / tags be in English (international title) or romanized Japanese?

Many people only know a franchise by its English name, but some don't even have an official English name / title. What should be our policy on that? I'd personally prefer the romanized Japanese and a tag synonym from the English one.

Also even if a unlocalized series has a English name, doesn't mean that English will carry over... take Detective Conan for an example... Everywhere but in the US it's called that... in the US it's called... Case Closed.

The name was probably changed for SEO purposes...

When you try to migrate one, it doesn't let you do it. Because old questions don't add any value to the new site. They're old, after all.

Cross-site questions can be asked BUT there is a but. Asking the same exact question makes little sense: after all different site means different audience.

So you must reword it to fit the new site.

More or less. Let's make an example...

I ask a question and I think that I can have different perspective answers from two sites.

First I post on one.

And get answers and etc...

Then I re-word it to fit the new site's scope and topic, even linking the old one. If it fails in the old one, you can flag your question for migration so it gets moved to the new site.

@Alenanno It makes sense when the "copy" question is closed as duplicate (this is the only close reason which doesn't result in the question to be deleted after a while) and optionally locked. Then it uses very little space and leads to no moderator effort aside from the initial close/lock, but allows for a tag-search on just one site to find all the related questions, even those asked on another site.

@MartinSojka All 3 seems a bit excessive... and you really don't want to get into trying to snag SEO hits with Japanese.

The basic issue is that Japanese is massively variable in how something is spelled. In this case you're just copying titles, but that still leaves you with: official title (probably kanjified), kana version, romaji version, shortened version of official title, romaji version of that... and this is assuming all the fansubbers/official-release agreed on the spelling of the original (usually this only hits you with 'bylines')

I'm in favor of it. We had the discussion on meta, and it seems like we're keeping the questions, so it's probably worthwhile to organize them. The [japanese-language] doesn't indicate that it's only about the language, but that some knowledge of the language will be needed to answer the question.

There's a type of question which goes along the lines of "Character X says Y, but usually you'd use Z in that situation? What does it mean here?" - that's on topic on both JLU and anime

If you just use japanese-language, the problem is that people who are less familiar with the sites may misuse it.

Which is probably fine, questions can be migrated.

But I'm not sure how big of a can of worms it would be.

@jkerian I don't need to know how fansubbers think they should spell the title(s), I can just hear it for myself. :) Kana titles seem extraneous as well; search web sites are good enough to understand that. For example, searching for "こうかくきどうたい" on Google tells me "Showing results for 攻殻機動隊", as it should be.

Yahoo's search takes me to Bandai's web site for the same as the third result, even though it doesn't have the kana anywhere (just checked the HTML source for the page).

Bing does the same, but I think they're using the same data anyway.

@Krazer I checked with Baidu.jp. Guess what, the same search term still gave me "コレは？攻殻機動隊 " just below the search entry (clickable so I can change to it quickly).

Now, if Anime.SE gets indexed there or how well, that's outside of our power, but we can help along with tag wikis and including the right names into our questions and answers.

@Krazer Doesn't work for stuff like "おだのぶなのやぼう" (should link me to " 織田信奈の野望"), but that's just a few months old. It does work for "あおのエクソシスト" (suggesting 青の祓魔師, correctly), which is a year old. Good enough, I think.
